Can't install virtualbox

I am trying to finish installing the VirtualBox software and I get this error in the console
## Executing postinstall script.
Configuring VirtualBox kernel modules...
VirtualBox Host kernel module unloaded.
devfsadm: driver failed to attach: vboxdrv
Warning: Driver (vboxdrv) successfully added to system but failed to attach
can't load module: No such device or address
## Aborting due to attach failure.
## Configuration failed. Aborting installation.
pkgadd: ERROR: postinstall script did not complete successfully
Installation of <SUNWvbox> partially failed.

I have typically seen errors like that when previous versions of VirtualBox were still installed. Try removing it (./vb-install -u) and verify after that the following packages have been removed:
SUNWvbox
SUNWvboxkern
Reboot, then try the installation again.

You can install an older version of virtualbox-guest-utils.
You can wait for catalyst to support xorg-server 1.17 and install virtualbox-guest-utils only then.
You can change graphics drivers to the FLOSS ones and install xorg-server 1.17 and virtualbox-guest-utils.

h3. I FIGURED OUT THE ANSWER!
when i realized what the problem was, i slapped my forehead so hard that my brain felt a sharp pain, my adrenaline spiralled, and i was a hair-breadth away from a homicidal frenzy.
the answer will cause you gurus to laugh (i can just picture you chuckling!), but to a noob, this was a major obstacle and emotional experience: i was depressed for three days because i didn't know whom to ask these most rudimentary of questions.
the answer is this: Oracle's user's manual dictates, authoritatively,
    pkgadd -d VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg
being a noob, besotted by definition, i don't question, but rather i do as i'm told, so i entered verbatim pkgadd -d VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg . solaris rejected it and produced an error report. in the next 36 hours, every permutation of every reasonable, possible modification was likewise unceremoniously rejected.
on the third day, the gods took pity on me: They revealed that the name of the extracted file is not VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS.pkg , but rather +it is VirtualBox-4.1.8-SunOS -r75467 .pkg+ -- the "-r75467" was the gremlin!!
    it installed.

  • Linux restart after install VirtualBox 2.1.4 on OEL 5 Update 3 x86_64

We can´t install VirtualBox 2.1.4 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5 Update 3 x86_64, after download the rpm for RHEL 5 (AMD64 link) and installing it, the Server reboot and Linux just don´t start, it reboot and reboot again during the modding VirtualBox Kernel boot pass.
We had to enter in "single" RHEL mode and remove VirtualBox from the command line (rpm -e VirtualBox) to start OEL and run Linux in normal GUI mode.
OEL 5 Upd 3 is installed in a HP Proliant ML150 Server, it has Oracle Data Base, Firebird, Apache, Auscomp ItCommander and other 64 bit Software installed that works fine.
    What could be the problem?

    Thanks for reply.
    Well, I found some errors in the VirtualBox installation log. Some are related to a ERROR: Kernel configuration is invalid.";
I posted this log inside a ticket in VirtualBox.org. The link is: http://www.virtualbox.org/attachment/ticket/3496/vbox-install.log
However in the middle of the VirtualBox installation process the Server is hard booted and it doesn´t show any error.

The last time I looked, the iMac was an Apple product. When attempting to solve a problem, I assume that anything in the chain could be the cause of the problem. In this case the chain consisted of three items: 1) An iMac, 2) OSX, and 3) VM Box.
I hope I can be as useful in the future helping Templeton to solve any problem he may have.

  • Can I install Snow Leopard on MacBook Pro 2013

Can I install Snow Leopard on my new MacBook Pro 2013. I'm so tired of the UGLY grey icons. I keep thinking that the mail or iPhoto window is not the active one because everything is grey.  I use Snow Leopard on my 27inch iMac and love it. Nice RED delete button for mail, etc. Thanks

Firmware restrictions prevent directly loading any OSX earlier than what came with the system.
The *only* way around is to load SnowLeopard *Server* (not Client) into a virtual machine (Parallels, VMWare Fusion, VirtualBox).  But that costs $20+shipping/tax for the disk and is a learning curve into SL Server.  And you *still* need your host OSX to run it, and the VM will not most efficiently use the hardware resources.

For flight change. My luggage got lost and I had to leave for India. On reaching I waited for 6 days daily going to the Mumbai airport and enquiry but now I am stuck I can't work using windows software s for designing engg.
Can someone tell me a better way how can I install windows if I don't have the driver CDs?
Thanks in advance.  Sb sob sob
    Pl. help. Thanks

Reinstall OSX using the online recovery.
Then use Boot Camp Assistant. One of the Boot Camp Assistant menu items is download the Windows Support Software (drivers). Make sure you follow the Boot Camp instructions.
Or, Reinstall OSX using the online recovery.
Then install a virtual machine like Parallels, Fusion, or VirtualBox. Then install Windows in the virtual machine.
You can use either Boot Camp or a virtual machine to install Windows. Neither method requires any driver cds.

  • Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro?

Can I install Windows 7 (64 bit) on late 2013 edition of MacBook Pro using Bootcamp? Before today, I would have never even asked this question due to the large number of users who continue to use Windows 7 in the PC world!  However, there seems to be two conflicting links on the Apple site.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3986
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5634
From the first link, there is a statement as follows: Mac Pro (Late 2013) only supports Windows 8 (64-bit).
From the second link, the table (under MacBook Pro) clearly states that the Retina, 13 inch, late 2013 edition supports BOTH Windows 8 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit.
So the above information is conflicting; and as a result, I am confused!  Thanks for any responses.

As far as I am aware your computer supports Win 7 and Win 8 - 64-bit.
    Windows on Intel Macs
There are presently several alternatives for running Windows on Intel Macs.
         1. Install the Apple Boot Camp software.  Purchase Windows 7
or Windows 8.  For Boot Camp 4.0 and above you can only use
Windows 7 or later. Follow instructions in the Boot Camp documentation on
installation of Boot Camp, creating Driver CD, and
installing Windows.  Boot Camp enables you to boot the
computer into OS X or Windows.
         2. Parallels Desktop for Mac and Windows XP, Vista Business,
Vista Ultimate, or Windows 7.  Parallels is software
virtualization that enables running Windows concurrently
             with OS X.
         3. VM Fusion and Windows XP, Vista Business, Vista Ultimate,
or Windows 7.  VM Fusion is software virtualization that
enables running Windows concurrently with OS X.
         4. CrossOver which enables running many Windows
applications without having to install Windows.  The
Windows applications can run concurrently with OS X.
         5. VirtualBox is an Open Source freeware virtual machine such
as VM Fusion and Parallels that was developed by Solaris.
It is not as fully developed for the Mac as Parallels and VM
             Fusion.
Note that VirtualBox, Parallels, and VM Fusion can also run other operating systems such as Linux, Unix, OS/2, Solaris, etc.  There are performance differences between dual-boot systems and virtualization.  The latter tend to be a little slower (not much) and do not provide the video performance of the dual-boot system. See MacTech Labs- Virtualization Benchmarks, January 2013 | MacTech for comparisons of Boot Camp, Parallels, and VM Fusion. Benchmarks of all of the above except Crossover can be found in Benchmarking Parallels, Fusion, and VirtualBox Against Boot Camp - The Mac Observer. Boot Camp is only available with Leopard or later. Except for Crossover and a couple of similar alternatives like DarWine you must have a valid installer disc for Windows.
You must also have an internal optical drive for installing Windows. Windows cannot be installed from an external optical drive.

  • How can I install Apple BootCamp with Windows 8 32-bit then upgrade to 64-bit?

I am trying to install Apple Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro 13-inch, bought in early 2013. I have Windows 8 pro 32-bit install package and an install package for 64-bit upgrade.
I received my Windows licenses for free (because I work for a nonprofit). I only have the Windows 8 Pro 32-bit install package. However, I also have the install package to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro 64-bit. The problem is that I can't install the Windows 8 Pro 32-bit on BootCamp to start and then upgrade.
Is there a way to install Windows 8 Pro 32-bit on Apple BootCamp and then upgrade to 64-bit?
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

bootcamp don't have any drivers for 32bit win8 I believe
your best bet is to use virtualbox or another of the virtual machine software and install it there

    *Bootcamp on External Hard Drive?*
Can I install Bootcamp on an external Hard Drive? I don't see why it wouldn't work. Do I need to install the Mac OS on the external Hard Drive first, then Bootcamp?
By Microsofts Design no Windows can be installed and booted from external HDs. BootCamp just follows this.
However, according to this http://tubeshards.wordpress.com/2006/12/05/install-windows-to-a-macintosh-usb-dr ive/ it can be done.

Parallels is an OS X application which don't need a restart of your Mac to run Windows.
Therefor you can run OS X and Parallels Windows side-by-side.
Main drawback is, that Windows runs not native (on the real hardware) but in a virtualized environment.
While this is more than acceptable for 'standard' Office programs, any program that needs direct hardware access (especially games and 3D-programs) either do not run at all or run at noticeable slower speed.
Also you have to realize that the amount of RAM in your Mac is divided between OS X and Parallels Windows.
    *What Options are there...*

BootCamp is no option then, since it needs a reboot everytime you want to switch between OS X and Windows.
Parallels (and VMWare Fusion and VirtualBox, BTW) run alongside OSX.
    Thanks
    You're welcome. Hope it helps.
