Can't log in as guest

I've set up guest access in the "accounts" preference pane, and Guest now shows up as an option at login. But when I click it, the window shudders as if I had entered the wrong password, and I am not logged in.
I don't have parental controls switched on for Guest, and the other accounts work fine.
Anyone else having this problem? Any ideas of how to get it working?

I didn't have a guest folder to delete, so went to system preferences, disabled the guest account, restarted, then re-enabled the guest account. Everything working fine now. At least for the past 10 minutes

  • I can't log out of my guest account because DLconnectMonitor won't turn off.  How do I turn it off?

I am planning on lending one of my Mac products to a friend so she can watch our Easter service on FaceTime.  In preparation for this, I logged into the guest account and found the administrator had to give permission for the guest to use FaceTime and DLconnectMonitor.  It looked like this had to be done for the guest account to work at all, so I gave permission.  When I went to log out of the guest account, I couldn't becauseDLconnectMonitor would not turn off.  I can't even find it on my computer.  Does anybody know how I can turn it off and log out of my guest account?

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.
Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.
Here are some general guidelines. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickYourMac.” First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickyourmac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickYourMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickYourMac.” If not, open “BrickYourMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button.
You may have to log out or reboot in order to complete an uninstallation.
If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase your boot volume and perform a clean reinstallation of OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" that purport to remove software.

  • Can not log on after successfull installation - SAP Netweaver Trial JAVA

    Hello,
I have successfully downloaded and installed the NW Java trial. (NW_JAVA_700SP14_SR3.rar)
I can see in SAP MMC that all the services was started. At http://vjm:50000 I can see the default page.
Unfortunately I can not log on to any page that need SAP authentication (eg. User management, NW administrator),
but can log to pages which needs just basic browser authentication (eg: Web Service Navigator, UDDI client, System Information).
The portal also does not let me log on (http://vjm:50000/irj ).
When I get the standard SAP NW log on screen, after entering Administrator with the correct master password, simply the log on screen appears again (the password field is cleared). I also tried some incorrect user name / password just to check the difference. In that case I got the correct error message.
I installed the software with WMware, Windows 2003 server, allocated enough disk space and 1.6Gbyte RAM. The installation finished without errors. Prior, I installed the MS loopback too (tried without it too). In SAP MMC everything is green, only have an open alert in J2E 00 -> Services -> Security -> Aggregated Data -> Invalid session count "262 > 200 last reported value above treshold".
I am using the standard internet explorer coming with Win2003 server.
Tried the users: Administrator, SDM, Guest, ADSUSER. I know that the password is correct, because I don't get any error if I use it, just getting the log on screen back ...
Could anyone pls help me how can I log on to the system? Or is there any security trace file or log which could help me solve this problem?
I am desperately trying to install this trial, I completely reinstalled the software 5 times but still can not use it

    Hi,
    is your problem persisting?
CAVE: If you use a wrong user/pw combination > 3 times the account of the user may be locked!
try j2ee_admin instead of administrator or try adm together with your Masterpassword
Do you have to specify the users pw inside the installation procedure? In "normal" installations this has to be done.
If not the pw´s in the documentation of the previous answer`may fix your problem.
The sap mmc is irrelevant for user authentication.
Green means your system is running, nothing else.
    kind regards
    Tom

  • Why can I not disable the guest user in the 10.8.2 update? I have never enabled the guest user, but after the update, it was automatically enabled with a "managed" tag. It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options.

Why can I not disable the guest user in the 10.8.2 update? I have never enabled the guest user, but after the update, it was automatically enabled with a "managed" tag. It is not selectable even after entering my admin password to unlock the options. I was able to select the account under "parental controls", but again, could not delete it. Why Apple? Why?!!????

SOLVED Ok. I actually was able to disable it. I had to actually log in as the guest user to make it accessible in the preference window. Then I disabled it and logged out. Apologies if this was obvious for some people, but I have had some sort of issue with something every update since Snow Leopard.

  • Windows XP client needs to authenticate and not being logged on as guest

    Hello!
I've got a problem with Leopards File Sharing:
My father has a Windows XP notebook with installed Bonjour and when he connects to my MacBook Pro with OS X 10.5.3 he will be logged in as guest but my collegue has to type in a user name and a password. Why?
Guest Account for File Sharing is activated and AFP/SMB Sharing is activated.
    Where's the problem?

The only thing i can think of is make sure and port forwarding is still the same to allow remote connections, also check the firewall logs, maybe going to 10.4 server has added some extra security thats blocking connections..

  • Started with dock crash, now can't log in

This might be a little disjointed because I'm copying my 3 posts from another forum because I didn't get any answers.....
I installed Yosemite on my early 2013 iMac yesterday and have mostly been unable to use my account since the install.
The first clue that something was wrong was that it took literally 4 minutes to log on to my account. I would type in my password and it would spin and sit there until 4 minutes later when it let me in (I timed it).
Then the first time, my dock was flashing for awhile then went away (I do not have it hidden) and everything was painfully slow. Once I finally got my console open I could see the dock was crashing approximately every 40 second. There were some other error messages but they all seemed related to the dock.
I first tried to repair disk permissions but that was so slow it wasn't even useful. I tried it last night, then let it run overnight and when I got up it had fixed maybe 10 items (all related to the printer) and said I had 11 hours left.
I went to my library/preferences and deleted the dock.plist, then rebooted but that didn't have any effect.
But it only seems to be my account. I am now logged on to the guest account and everything seems to be working. I ran the repair disk permissions and it took 2 minutes, found a few things and fixed them.
I'm not sure how I can copy the error messages or access them from the guest account in order to paste them here. If I tried to post this message from my account the lag is so bad that it would literally take me at least 45 minutes just to open Safari, open the console, and post a message.
Well now I can't even log on anymore. Tried booting into safe mode to see if it still crashed. Rebooted, had the red "safe mode" on the top right of screen, but unable to log on. Put in my password and it sat there with the spinning rainbow for 15 minutes. Rebooted to get out of safe mode, tried to log on but same thing. I gave it 30 minutes then rebooted again. Now trying to log in to guest account but it's not letting me do that either. No clue what to do next.
I do have time machine set up on an external drive but not sure if the last backup was from Yosemite or Mavericks. But I don't even know how to get to it. Unfortunately I've only been on Macs for a year so all I really know is Windows.
And for what it's worth, I did buy the 3 year AppleCare Plus for it so it's still under warranty. I'm about to chuck it out the window then take it to the Apple Store. Ok, not really but this is frustrating.......I don't have time for this
This just keeps getting worse. I've done a nvram reset, no change. I was able to log in to my daughter's account so I deleted some programs that I never use and updated MS Office just for the fun of it. I also created another admin account in case I could simply switch accounts but now I'm not sure.
After doing all the changes I could think of in my daughter's account I rebooted the computer. And......now I can't get back in to hers either. The rainbow spins and it freezes (the clock in the top right never changes so I assume it's frozen).
So what seems to be happening is that I'm allowed to use accounts once, then something happens and I can't get back in. I've used my account, the guest account, and my daughter's, and now all of them freeze the computer.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

And in case ther is no solution, I do have a question.  I do have a Time Machine backup that I can restore that will put be back to Mavericks.  But if I do this, what will I lose?  I'm pretty sure I had it set up to backup everything (but no way to check) but I got a little paranoid when it said that restore will erase the disk so make sure I have my files backed up.  That's kind of what I thought Time Machine was supposed to do!
Then after I restore, should I wait for 10.10.1 to come out?  I don't want to find myself in the same boat but I don't even know what to look for to troubleshoot this.

  • Can't log into my main user acct! How can I fix this? Help, I'm stumped!

OK, here's the problem. While using my machine with VMware, I got the beachball of death. Nothing would respond and no keystrokes would bring up force quit. I finally had to press and hold start to shutdown.
When I restarted my machine first the grey screen came up and then a grey progress line was shown and finally completed. After that, the regular log in screen came up.
Here is where the problem begins. When I go to log in, (enter my password) it pauses briefly and then a blue screen comes up for a moment, and then it returns to the log in screen. This is a never ending cycle and the same thing happens if I shutdown and restart.
I can however log in into the guest account OK
Here's what I've done so far. Opened Disk Utility from guest acct and repaired permissions and reset PRAM. So far no luck,
If all attempts to log in fail, can I access my main user files from the guest account? I suppose if I have to reload everything I can restart in Target mode and get everything off to an external HD.
Please, if you have any suggestions, please let me know! Thanks!!!

  • Can't log into my account

I have a toshiba satellite L 305 laptop.I was working on it the yesterday and a window popped up for an update of adobe. I installed the update but after that my laptop switched off. Now when I start it and put my administrator password, it just gets hang up with a 'welcome' note on the screen. I have a guest account also on my system. I am able to log in it and I can go to desktop of guest account. There I can browse internet but for all other things, it hangs up. I dont know what to do. Please help me. I talready tried to start my system in safe mode. In safe mode, it does not even allow me to access guest account.
Someone told me to reformat whole of the system using recovery disc. If I do that, I will loose all my data. If this is the only thing, can anyone tell me how to take back up of the data using a external hard drive.
    Any help will be appreciated.

    Hi,
First, I hope it's working by now...
If not, I'd try to reset your password using the Install Disk.
If that doesn't work either (and I wonder why it wouldn't), then I believe you are left without an admin account (the Guest one has probably very limited privileges). I'd redo a setup and create a brand new admin account and try to troubleshoot from that account.
    To redo a setup
    Restart hold command+s
    type: /sbin/mount -uaw
    type: rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    type: reboot
When you recreate the account, make sure that you choose a login and shortname DIFFERENT than your current account.
Good luck. Let me know how it goes.

  • I have a problem in imessages I can not log on

I have a problem in imessages I can not log on and update through the application.Every time you logon work shows me a message saying "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later"

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.
Before proceeding, test on another network, if possible. That could be a public Wi-Fi hotspot, if your computer is portable, or a cellular network if you have a mobile device that can share its Internet connection. If you find that iMessage works on the other network, the problem is in your network or at your ISP, not in your computer.
    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Restart your broadband device and your router, if different. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 3
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ About This Mac
Below the "OS X" legend in the window that opens, the OS version appears. Click the version line twice to display the serial number. If the number is missing or obviously invalid, take the machine to an Apple Store or other authorized service center to have the problem corrected.
    Step 4
Back up all data, then take the steps suggested in this support article.
There are five steps in that article. Please take all of them. If you don't understand some of the steps or can't carry them out, ask for guidance.
    Step 5
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ System Preferences ▹ Network
If the preference pane is locked, click the lock icon in the lower left corner and enter your password to unlock it. Then click the Advanced button and select the Proxies tab. If any proxy options are selected, make a note of them and then deselect them. You don’t need to change the bypass or FTP settings. Click OK and then Apply. Test. The result may be that you can't connect to any web server. Restore the previous settings if that happens.
    Step 6
    Select from the menu bar
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 7
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
If iMessage worked in the guest account, stop here and post your results.
    Step 8
Boot in safe mode and log in. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including Wi-Fi on certain iMacs.  The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and test again.
If iMessage worked in safe mode, but didn't work when you booted out of safe mode, stop here and post your results.
    Step 9
    Reset the NVRAM.
    Step 10
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 11
If none of the above steps resolves the issue, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or contact Apple Support.

  • Why does 'Guest User' appear in a foreign language when logged in as guest?

Why does 'Guest User' appear in a foreign language when logged in as guest? It's not a major problem but it would be nice to be able to fix it, and to understand how it happened.
Everything else is in English (or set to English) as far as I can see, and my Macbook is only a couple of weeks old. All system updates have been performed and permissions have been repaired.
It displays it in Finnish (Suomi) as 'Vierastilin käyttäjä' only when logged in, in the System Preferencess user list and apple menu (where you would normally select 'Log Out Guest User'). I cant find anyone else with the same problem online. I am in the UK, purchased the Macbook on the UK Apple Store online, and I have never been to Finland or selected anything to do with Finland or its language. Everything else is in English.
I should add that 'Vierastilin' showed up instead of 'Guest User' on the OSX login screen on the first day I had the Macbook, but this seemed to fix itself somehow soon after.
A couple of photos to illustrate the problem that still exists are attached.

Thanks for the reply. I only have English - Primary but I guess I could add Finland and then delete it...
Okay, tried that, lots of variations including deleting all other languages and only using Finnish, and then using only British English etc - when guest is in Finnish the whole lot becomes Finnish/Suomi (see attached photos to compare with the ones above) - then when you delete Finnish and go back to English, everything is Englisg apart from 'Vierastilin käyttäjä' as above.
Any other ideas where it stores that info - is there a dodgy preference file somewhere which needs zapping?

  • "An error occurred during activation. Try again." Can't log into iMessage on Macbook for past two weeks.

iMessage worked fine on my Macbook until about two weeks ago.  I can use iMessage for gMail, but my iCloud account is inactive and I get the error message "An error occurred during activation. Try again." when I try to log in with any apple ID.  It works fine currently on my iMac and my iOS devices.
I have tried many suggestions, including checking the serial number, various time & date configurations, trying an alternate Apple ID, restarting, signing in and out of iCloud, and inspecting the keychain.

This could be a complicated problem to solve, as there are many possible causes for it. Test after taking each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Back up all data before making any changes.

    Step 1
Check the status of the service. If the service is down, wait tor it to come back up. There may be a localized outage, even if the status indicator is green.
    Step 2
Sign out of iMessage on all your Apple devices. Log out and log back in. Try again to sign in.
    Step 3
Restart your router and your broadband device, if they're separate. You may have to skip this step if you don't control those devices.
    Step 4
    From the menu bar, select
     ▹ About This Mac

The result may be that you can't connect to the Internet at all. Revert the change if that happens, or if iMessage still doesn't work. Remember that you must Apply any changes you make in the preference pane before they take effect.
    Step 7
    Select from the menu bar
     ▹ System Preferences… ▹ Flash Player ▹ Storage
    and click
Block all sites from storing information on this computer
    Close the preference pane.
    Step 8
Make sure you know the ID and password you use with iMessage. Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Keychain Access in the icon grid.
Use the search box in the toolbar of the Keychain Access window to find and delete all items with "iMessage" or "com.apple.idms" in the name. Log out and log back in.
    Step 9
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you start up, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

    Step 12
    Reinstall OS X.
    Step 13

  • I can't log into Muse

Jeff, I tried installing a muse trial and then logging in creates a loop where I accept terms, it asks for login, accept terms, asks for login. The only troubleshooting is to reset password ( which was working because it installed on my laptop ) but I reset and tried again with the same loop.
    Have tried:
         Install from web ( A12E5 error )
Manual install of AAM ( Login, download error, contact Customer Service )
Manual install of Akamai Netsession ( spawns when AAM is started then hangs )
Manual install of Muse ( Login / accept terms loop )
Adobe CS cleaner ( all )
Uninstall all of the above and delete directories
Reset Windows 7 IP and TCP stacks to factory defaults
Connect PC to Comcast instead of Uverse
         Uninstalled Antivirus
         Rebooted
Powered off for 3 days ( had guests )
Confirmed TEMP dirs are default windows ones
         Confirmed available disk space
Performed ancient ritual of unknown software error ( curse and shake fist )
Previously CS4 worked, CS6 Photoshop Beta worked, Lightroom 3.6 worked. It's something with this PC but I don't know what else to do except format and start OS from scratch.

I can easily install the program but can not log on to start the program

  • Logging in results in hang - can't log in!

When I start up my MBP, it gets to the user-picker ok, accepts my account password, but then hangs with just the 'nebula' desktop (not my user-preference desktop) and a (movable) cursor. I've tried restarting many times, but it never gets further than this.
Sometimes, once it's started hanging, it'll still accept a cmnd-alt-esc (though the 'force quit' window shows no programs - not even finder - running). Sometimes my spotlight shortcut produces a pile of error windows, the top one of which tells me that spotlight has unexpectedly quit. Although the 'ok' button pulses smoothly, it's unresponsive to clicks or key-presses. Also, while it's hanging, pressing some keys produces a standard 'system alert' beep, and the screen occasionally dims (as it would if it were working normally).
Once or twice it's let me log in as another user (or guest) (at which point it seems to work fine) but user switching to my 'normal' account results in a hang. Other times, though, it hangs on all users.
I restarted it in firewire target disk mode from another computer, and ran a Disk Utility check on it - no problems. Permissions repair is unavailable. The MBP's disks are perfectly accessible/navigable via target disk firewire.
After this it took a LONG time to get to the user-picker, (staying on the grey screen for, like, 3 minutes), but it did not fix the problem.
I just restarted in 'safe boot' mode, but now the user-picker screen is unresponsive to clicks (except the sleep/restart/shut down buttons, which work fine).
    This problem started today.
Also, I have finals next week, so speedy responses would be VERY appreciated!

More information which might help diagnose the problem:
    1. I turned my MBP on in an area with an encrypted wifi network and, over the 'hanging' desktop I got a "please log in to wifi network" dialogue box... so it has the capacity to detect and connect to a network...
    2. I have successfully logged in as other users several times now, but every time the system slowly gets less and less responsive, starting at things just taking a long time to load, and ending at total hang.
    3. I logged in as guest and managed to use my "broken" username and password to authenticate changing of login options to allow for a ">console" login.
Having used ">console", I tried to log in using my "broken" details, but it kicked me back out to the GUI window. I tried again and this time it seemed to work ok for about 3-4 seconds, then I got a message (which I stupidly didn't copy down) informing me that there'd been a crash, and that details had been recorded in:
    /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/coreservicesd2008-05-13-224634Cai-MBP.crash
    I went there and typed
    +cat coreservicesd2008-05-13-224634Cai-MBP.crash | more+
The file's big, and too long to transcribe, but I've photographed (lol) it and you can find it here:

I don't understand the contents of this file... but perhaps it will be of more use to someone who knows more about such things...?
