Can't re-install Tiger onto Tiger iMac?

I have an Intel iMac running Tiger 10.4.11. I want to do an archive/instal to freshen it up (Mail has lost its will to live or at least to follow rules and accurately select Junk plus other reasons) but when I go to instal from the original disks it tells me "This software cannot be installed on this computer" but in Windows fashion, can't be bothered to explain WHY?!
What have I missed? Anyone help?
Thanks in advance out there!
Cheers
Chris

It happened to me, too. In 2006 I installed 10.4.2 using Install Disk 1 of the DVDs that came with my refurbished Mini. I used the DVD subsequently for DU and Hardware Test.
When I started with the DVD six weeks ago, it had me choose a language. Then it said, "Alert! This software cannon be installed on this computer." Restarting was the only option.
I had never opened my Mini. As in the original installation, only a monitor, mouse, and keyboard were connected. The monitor and mouse were not what I used in 2006, but they worked fine when the DVD asked me to choose a language.
The DVD is gray and labeled for the Mini. It's 2Z691-5615-A. I don't own any Apple DVDs except the pair that came with the MIni. What could keep it from working?

You have already seen that you cannot load the new iTunes into your 10.5.8, so as Neil says, you need Snow Leopard (current cost £14).    And you'll probably need to update the disc you buy via the combo update, though that is free.
As far as the new iTunes is concerned, there's been a certain amount of grumbling so you may want to study the forums before you update.   The main problem has been with album artwork which does not transfer easily.

If you just did upgrade Lion, give it some time. I recall having similar problems and some articles mention heavy background work after install - such as re-indexing for Spotlight etc. I couldn't even copy from folder to folder or e.g. iphoto to folder on the same disk. Went away after a day or two though.
I do however still have a problem with AFP access to one of the lion machines - kills it's network adaptors rather quickly. No luck solving this so far :|

Boot from the original Install disc that came with the computer and then format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled) using the GUID partition. Then  you can re-install OS X. If you no longer have the original media call AppleCare with the serial number of the machine (look on the bottom of the stand) and for a nominal fee they will ship you replacement media.
The chances are very good you will have fan problems if you used an off-the-shelf HD, beginning in 2009 Apple began using HD's from vendors that incorporated heat sensors into the HD. If you did not buy the same type of HD your computer will think the HD is overheating causing the fans to run at full speed.

Sorry to barge in like this but is it because you found it to have it's own way of doing stuff without your control? As i was thinking of doing the same thing because i found Mountain Lion much more user friendly.I know you came for an answer just was searching and came accross your question.
Hope you find the answer. good luck.

  • Problems installing Tiger onto G3 Imac - please help!

    hi all.
i've tried to install tiger onto a g3 imac but i'm having some problems.
basically, once i've inserted the install dvd and restarted, the screen is either totally blank or it's very very dark and the desktop is sliding off to one side, plus the text and icons are blurred.
i checked that i didn't need to update the firmware first, and the computer said that i didn't need to.
does anyone have any idea what i can do? i don't have the original OS9 install disk any more and i'm starting to panic ...
    thanks in advance
    ibook g4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

    Jon,
Not to be silly but do you you have DVD capabilities? Not all G3s (mine included) have DVD drives. Is the firmware 4.1.9? What is your machines specs? Do you have enough ram, hard disk space?
I haven't read about these types of going ons, however on the Tiger OS X.4 discussion board Gulliver has an excellent check list/ decision tree.
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607363
You may want to check that out as well as reposting your topic on the Tiger board.
Sorry I couldn't help more than possibly pointing you in the right direction.
    Good luck,

  • Can I just install Leopard over Tiger?

I have an OS 10.4 Tiger MacBook Pro and I'm thinking about upgrading it to Leopard. What happens when you do that? Does the installer wipe out everything on your HD giving you a blank system where you have to reinstall all your apps and so on, or does it sort of upgrade the infrastructure, leaving your apps and files in place?
I haven't run into too many instances where I couldn't run something because I don't have the latest OS, but there have been a few. Would I be better off waiting a while and just buying a new machine when the time comes?
I have a lot of stuff like Photoshop and music software. I also have various development tools like XCode and Eclipse. I also have drivers for stuff like my scanner and digital camera and whatnot.
Thanks for any info on this topic.
    Thanks!

Absolutely! I did it that way on both my MBPs with perfect success.
Just be sure to backup Tiger onto an external drive for several reasons:
    1 Stuff happens
2 You may want to keep some old Tiger stuff, and if you use a cloner for the backup, you can always boot into it and use it.
On each of my two MBPs, I created a small partition for Tiger and cloned Tiger onto it. I use the larger partition for my TM backups.
I have been using both MBPs running Leopard since a short time after Leopard was released and have not experienced any of the issues others have had. Also both my systems are up-to-date with the exception of the latest Safari.

  • Issues While Attempting to Clean Install Yosemite onto 2010 iMac 27"

Having a number of issues trying to clean install Yosemite onto a 2010 iMac 27.
The original 1TB HDD was about to die so I upgraded the hard drive to a Crucial SSD, via an Apple Authorized shop
Memory was also upgraded to 16GB (from the original 4GB)
The install process won't finish, as I get a disk error message from the computer
Since there's no fan control cable attached to the HDD anymore, the fan is on constantly (but I know this is a known / common issue so I will be fixing it via an app like HDD Fan Control)
The installation process keeps starting over
What is causing this installation issue? How can I fix and move forward?
Thanks in advance for help anyone can provide.

I've also tried an alternate method of installing - installing Yosemite onto an external hard drive then cloning this drive onto the SSD installed on the iMac. The computer keeps rebooting. This is the message that pops up. Growing increasingly frustrated. Is this a hardware issue related to the new SSD?

  • Installing CS6 onto new imac from upgrades

    Hi
I am wanting to install CS6 onto a new imac via the cloud. The CS6 I have is in disc format and is an upgrade from CS65.5.
CS5.5 is also an upgrade from CS4.
How do I install CS6 onto a new imac when I cant get install the original due to no CD drive?  Going mad!!

    Hi DonnaOxon,
    Welcome to Adobe Forums!
Even if you have the CD version of CS6 you can  still download and install CS6 from the cloud. During the installation it will first ask you to enter the serial number for CS6 and on the next step it will automatically ask you to enter the serial number for CS5.5.
The product will be licensed and installed once you enter these serial numbers correctly.
    Thanks

  • How can I re-install ichat on my imac

I deleted ichat from my imac because ichat wouldn't let me log in. It kept telling me that I tried to sign in too many times so i had to wait a few minutes to re sign in.
I inserted the install dvd for my imac, when i go to optional installs and click on the applications folder Ichat is unable to be selected. I can check off all other applications except IChat.
Does anyone know what else I can do?

    Hi,
The Message from AIM about Logging in too many times can be waited out (there is little else that can be done)
If it is happening continually then you need to look at you Network and whether it is maintaining enough of a "Always On" presence.
Wifi Network can suffer micro breaks that cause Buffering in downloads but not complete loss of connection plus delay in going to new pages in a Browser or delays in fetching new mail.
However iChat and Messages in Mountain Lion require an "Always On" connection.
Your Process so far seems to be correct.
    Insert Appropriate DVD
    Select Optional Installs
    Launch the Optional Installs Package.
    Select iChat.
Your Specs say OS X 10.6.8 which is Snow Leopard.
This is the correct method and seems to tie up with what you are seeing.
Lion and Mountain Lion need you to do the Restore Process. (it is like Archive and Install was but uses Apple's On Line store to get the Software).
I can see that Lion (if this method was an option) might have issues if the Messages Beta had been installed but you are using Snow Leopard.
I cannot think why it might not allow iChat.
I would do PRAM reset as a first option.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down Apple/CMD ( or ⌘)+ALT( ⌥)+P+R Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.

  • Yet another ? about re-installing OS9x onto an iMac!

Hi Don Archibald and other OS9 gurus,
I inherited an iMac from work that a colleague messed up trying to convert to a Linux system. It was mothballed and I decided to try to coax my mom into using a Mac. She doesn't need anything fancy but I know she likes card games and all of mine are for OS9x.
A busy Mac-expert pal of mine wiped the Linux and re-installed Panther on this machine, but decided since he doesn't use Classic, I didn't need it. Well, all of my old game, language, and craft software does need it and I get a message that I don't have Classic and have tried to install it back unsuccessfully.
    The machine is:
    Machine Model: iMac
    CPU Type: PowerPC 750 (83.0)
    Number Of CPUs: 1
    CPU Speed: 350 MHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
    Memory: 320 MB
    Bus Speed: 100 MHz
    Boot ROM Version: 4.1.9f1
I wasn't sure which of others' answers might apply and I don't want to undo anything my friend spent hours installing.
I have original disks for installing SSW version 9.0 labeled Software Restore & two disks labeled Software Install.
We didn't set up partitions this time so the HD is a single partition and runs Panther 10.3.9.
I believe he set it up for Extended whatnot.
It won't be the end of the world if I can't do it but I'd like to try. If you don't mind repeating yourselves for the upteenth time I'd appreciate any knowledge imparted.
    Many thanx!

    Hi, Michael -
Use the disk named Software Install labelled with SSW OS 9.0 and iMac. Boot the iMac to that CD.
    • If the hard drive's icon is visible on the desktop, you can proceed to install OS 9. Run the app Mac OS Install, and do a Clean Install of OS 9. Note that a Clean Install will not remove anything -
Article #58176 - Mac OS 8, Mac OS 9: Performing a Clean Installation
    • If the hard drive's icon is not visible on the desktop when you boot to the OS 9 Install CD, then the drive was probably last reformatted using OSX's Disk Utility and the option to install OS 9 drivers was not selected.
Article #106849 - Disk Is Available in Mac OS X But Not in Mac OS 9
If this is the case, and re-installing the drivers via the Update Driver suggestion in that article does not work, you would need to re-initialize the drive in order to be able to install OS 9. You can do that using OS 9's Drive Setup while still booted to the OS 9 Install CD. Note that doing this will erase everything on the drive, so if you want to save anything be sure to back it up before redoing the drive.
    Using Drive Setup
You can also do the above using a retail OS 9.1 or later Install CD - the retail CDs have a white label with a large gold 9 on them.

  • Installing software onto an iMac from a G5 DVD

I've got the G5 harddrive showing up on my iMac desktop through Ethernet using an Ethernet Router which has an input for the cable modem. I can access whatever I want from the iMac based on the preferences set on the G5. With the DVD disk in the DVD drive of the G5, the iMac cannot see the DVD disk.
OS 9.2.1 on the iMac, OS 10.4.8 on the G5.
I have seen other posts where this is done by way of a Firewire connection between the two computers. Shouldn't Ethernet be able to do this as well?
How do I get the DVD disk to appear on my imac desktop using the G5's DVD drive?
    Thanks

No. You are referring to Firewire target disk mode where one Mac is operating as an external FireWire drive. This gives the other Mac complete access to the system.
