Can't RENAME a file like Windows can?

Real easy. I just need to rename a file from this:
A2Capital.jpg
to this:
a2capital.jpg
I do this in Windows and of course every OS I have used since the 1990s at least. Why can't this be done in OS X 10.4.9?
I am on a network drive of a Windows Server, if that makes a difference. The error I always get is
The name a2capital with extension ".jpg" is already taken. Please choose a different name.
Oh, come on. This is an easy one, right?
It happens whether I click the filename or if I Show Info.
Mac Pro Quad 3.0 Mac OS X (10.4.9) I usually run Windows XP

OS X's filesystem, HFS+, is case-preserving, meaning
it stores the upper and lowercase characters of
file/folder names, however it's not case-sensitive
(unless you specify it as such when formatting the
disk in Disk Utility). In a case-preserving
filesystem, MyFile, mYfILE, myfile, and MYFILE all
reference the same file. There is no need to be rude
to Kappy, he was just trying to help. Here's some
reading if you want to learn more:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HFS_Plus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparisonof_filesystem
s#fn_35
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Case-preserving
Note: HFSX in 10.3 added the ability to format a disk
as Case-Sensitive. If you didn't reformat your disk
when you got your Mac, it's Case-Preserving, not
Case-Sensitive.
I see what you mean by case sensitive. I think Macs and Windows are similar in this regard. All that means is that if I type in a command to run, or I type a filename to launch, the OS is forgiving if I say "BLaH.JpG" for a file that is really "blah.JPG" -- if it's on the hard drive like that already.
You bet. But in both Mac and Windows it seems, I can rename the file to whatever mixed case I want and get no errors.
I only have this problem on the network drive,
which like I said is a Windows 2003 Server share.
Because your question is in the context of renaming a
file on a remote Windows share, then all the talk of
whether HFS is case-sensitive or not doesn't matter.
I'm assuming the share you're connected to when
trying to do this rename is NTFS? Macs use Samba to
connect to Windows shares. I've never tried to do
what you're doing through a samba share. It could be
Samba, or it could be how you have your share set up.
It does look like a Samba idiosyncrasy. I have used Samba before in FreeBSD (a relative to Darwin/OS X) but I would have no idea if that was the case there.
Samba has traditionally had some oddities, bugs, and problems due to the nature of open-sourcing a Windows custom secret network system. But Macs do claim to be interoperable with other networks and systems. This can't be unusual. Lots of people need to connect to a Windows share.
Ha, to be honest, I don't think I would even try to setup a NFS share on the Windows server, and there aren't any UNIX servers at this location.
Who heads up the Samba stuff for Mac OS?

  • How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files?

How can I quickly view pdf files like I can do with Windows Picture and Fax viewer for jpg files? I need to look at several thousand PDF files. It takes too long to open each one individually. The only thing I could think of is combining them into large groups and then using the Navigation index. But I like the way windows Picture and Fax Viewer does it because you can keep the files separate. Combining PDFs causes loss of individual file names. That would be a problem since I do need to have the individual file names.

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is a DLL and is started via a rundll32.exe call and can't be set as an application to handle images in Firefox 3 and later versions.
Try to set Windows Picture and Fax Viewer as the default viewer in Windows, then it should be listed automatically in the Mozilla Firefox Browse dialog.

  • Can't open PDF files from Windows Explorer on Windows 8.1

    Hello,
after I've upgraded to Windows 8.1, I can't open PDF files from Windows Explorer (directly double clicking the file). The AcroRd32.exe runs in the background (2x !) as I see the processes in task manager, but there is no user interface visible. I have Acrobat
Reader 11.0.06, the desktop version (not Metro). I tried uninstalling the Acrobat reader and installing it again but this didn't help. The only way to open PDF files is to close the AcroRd32.exe from the task manager, open empty Acrobat Reader from the desktop
and then drag&drop the PDF file over that window. This is quite inconvenient. Is there a way to fix this issue so I can open PDF files directly from windows explorer?
    Many thanks!

I had to install adobe reader, but   PDF's used to display just fine with IE, any idea what happened ?

  • Can We rename BAD File name in SQL Loader

    Hi All,
Can we rename BAD File name in SQL loader?
    If yes, how?
    Thanks in Advance,
    S

    Hi,
You can rename the bad file before running SQL*Loader, or specify the name of the bad file using the BADFILE clause followed by a filename. If you do not specify a name for the bad file, the name defaults to the name of the datafile with an extension or file type of .bad

  • Can't rename MP4 files

I can't rename MP4 files. Warnings says that I don't have permission. I have no problem changing any of my other  files that I want to rename.

Thanks but I've tried all of the common methods of renaming a locked  file. Read/write permission doesn't unlock the file.  This is happening only a particular set of mp 4 files that I down loaded from my road warrior dash cam.
I' ll have to keep searching for solution.  Thanks again.

  • How to delete & rename Quicktime files in Windows?

    Hi all,
I am having a problem to remove(delete) and rename quicktime files in Windows XP pro because it says "*Cannot delete .... It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again.*". I saw the same post with this issue in Page 3 in this forum, but we don't get the answer yet. Please give us the answer for it with this quicktime issue in Windows.
Followings are some answers that I found in other websites, but none of them solves this problem.
You can't delete those Quicktime movies because they are being used/opened by Quicktime. Run your Quicktime and clear any playlists that you saved and then open a video (that is not in one of the videos you wanted to delete). Then exist the program. Now go delete the videos you wanted to delete earlier and see if you can delete them this time.
If you have quicktime running in the background, it will own it so you can't delete it.Rebooting may not help because quicktime usually starts with Windows. Go to C: Windows/system32 and scroll down to msconfig.exe. You can open it or right click, hold, drag it to you desktop, release right click, and create a shortcut to it. Open the shortcut (double click), go to the startup tab, and uncheck all instances of quicktime. Reboot and try to do what you want with the .mov file.
Thank you very much in advance.

I've been having the same issue here. I've searched high and low for a real solution and haven't found a thing. Any help would be much appreciated!

i've tried multiply times to update itunes 10.5 but it keeps saying that it can't find the file and i can't reinstall itunes because it will delete the 100 gigabites of info on it what can i do

I've had all kinds of trouble keeping my iTunes software current over the past year, but have found the easiest way to remedy the issue is to simply download the latest version of iTunes as though I am a first-time user and then just install it into the directory my current version of iTunes is using. Doing this has allowed me to update my software without losing any of my media/data. Hope this helps! Best of luck!!!

  • Help! Can't open .dmg files suddenly, and can't find stuffit expander application!

My iMac is currently running on Mac os x 10.5.8, **out of nowhere my computer can't open dmg files. I can't seem to find the stuffit expander application anywhere in my hard drive either, which usually opens these files. Is there another application that can open dmg files? Help Please! I need to open multiple dmg files tonight and can't figure out a way around this. Downloading/running a new stuffit expander application also happens to be a .dmg file. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it so much!

Do you mean DiskImageMounter was chosen or not?
No change on that .dmg or on on others?
If you want to apply DiskImageMounter to all you have to choose "Change All".
EDIT: Also, Repair Permissions from /Applications/Utilities/ Disk Utility.
Also, George Orville has some interesting advice in this thread
Note this advice is for 10.3 but much of it will apply here.

  • Can't rename a folder in Windows 7 - receive error message

When trying to rename a folder in Windows 7, I get a "Folder In Use" message saying that the folder or a file in it is open in another program.  This is untrue as I don't have any other programs open.  I even rebooted the computer and tried again
and it gave me the same message.  This has occurred more than once and it's beginning to drive me crazy.  Do you have any suggestions as to how to fix this problem?

    Hi,
    Please use the
Process Explorer to check which process keeps your file in use.
In addition, you can try to rename the folder in
Safe Mode to see the result.

  • Can't rename a file using File.renameTo(...)

    Hi,
I have a servlet, RenameFile, that receives audio file via HTTP Post and writes it to /tmp/recording.0002002B-0C0022BB-0001.1.20050622.073208.wav. Then it creates directories under /alert_messages directory based on the timing parameters that it get. Finally, it renames /tmp/recording.0002002B-0C0022BB-0001.1.20050622.073208.wav to /alert_messages/2005/06/22/22/00/79_0_200506222200_001.WAV. RenameFile runs fine when it runs by itself (ONLY one Tomcat, jakarta-tomcat-4.1.30, is running). However, RenameFile fails to rename the /tmp/recording.0002002B-0C0022BB-0001.1.20050622.073208.wav to /alert_messages/2005/06/22/22/00/79_0_200506222200_001.WAV when it runs in a Linux box that jboss-3.2.1_tomcat-4.1.24 is also running. In this box, TWO versions of Tomcat are running at the same time. I set the /alert_messages directory with chmod R 777 and run jakarta-tomcat-4.1.30 as tomcat user. RenameFile fails the rename operation. But, it creates the /alert_messages/2005/06/22/22/00/ directories.
It seem like RenameFile can create directory but cant create file in the /alert_messages directory when both version of tomcats are running at the same time.
Can it be due to both the jakarta-tomcat-4.1.30 and the jboss-3.2.1_tomcat-4.1.24 versions are running at the same time in one Linux box?
Can this be Jboss prevented the operation?
I did not receive any io exception!!!
Any help in this issue is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Thank you for replying to my message. The servlet has been running for me for the last 12 months. However, it was running by itself without the Jboss-tomcat running on the same box. Can this be the catalina.policy file in the jboss-tomcat version restricted the rename operation. We are not allowed to write file under the umbrella of J2EE. But the servlet did not run within Jboss-tomcat. This really gets me thinking that something is not working correctly. Perhaps tomcat did not has the permission to write on the /alert_messages directory, again it did created the subdirectories under the /alert_messages.
Any idea of what is going on?

  • I can register an OCX file in Windows 7 x64 without incident but with Windows 7 x32 I get a p-up that says "DllRegisterServer failed with error code: 0x80004005. What gives???

Hey yeah.  not much else to say.  The title says it all.
I'm trying to register an OCX file that my video editing application requires to work properly.
I'm using a  Registry (Regsvr32 and Regsvr64) tool to Register DLL/OCX files.  Both bit Registry tools work fine. I can Register any DLL or OCX file with Windows 7 x64 and everything goes smoothly.
But, when in Windows 7 x32, again, no problem with merging the Regsvr32 tool, but when I go to register the OCX file message says it was loaded but the DllRegisterServer failed with error: 0x80004005.

My Video Editing software was working fine a few days ago in Windows 7 x64.  Tried using it this morning....couldn't load the .mpg video clip.  Just stood there looking stupid like it does in the 32-bit version of Windows 7.
I was hoping the x64 version of Windows 7 RC 7100 was going to make a decent run against my XP Pro SP3 setup. When I was able to register the required .ocx file for the video editing application, I thought "cool".  I made a TV recording then used the Video Editor to edit it and it worked fine.  Earlier this morinng I made another TV recording, went to go edit it and the video editing application couldn't load the .mpg file at all.  This problem just annihilated any chance of me ever purchasing Windows 7, 32 or 64-bit.GA P35 DQ6 Mb, Intel Wolfdale 8600 3.33Ghz C2D CPU., 4x2Gb Mushkin DDR2 1066 PC2 8500 Ascents Memory Mods., PNY-nVidia GE Force 8800 GTS (640MB), 4-Western Digital Caviar SATA(2) HDD's (internal), 1 EIDE-USB External; Hauppauge PVR 1600 TV tuner, Dual Monitor: (1) Standard up top, (1) WideScreen below; Altec Lansing Speakers. I have windows vista. last saturday a popup asked if I wanted to install Adobe9. I clicked OK but later the install failed. talked with adobe support on monday and they installed adobe9 on my pc. however, when emails are sent to me with an attachment that is a PDF file, I can not open the attachment...it loads Acrobat.com instead.
I think there is a incompatiblity between mail and this new adobe.

any help would be greatly appreciated since these attachments are info for my home business.

this procedure does work and I appreciate your help. I just wish that the

I plan on re-contacting adobe and see if they can un-install 9 and then I

  • Can't rename important file!

    Hi everybody
well, I have quite an extraordinary situation here.
Today morning I created an iStopMotion file (.mov) and renamed it, to my misfortune, with a VERY long name. The file's only copy is on my external drive (unfortunately FAT 32). If I now want to select the file, it simply just disappears (and only reappears if I restart the Finder). Hence, I can not rename it and therefor use it. It's a very important school file and I can not reproduce the file, I HAVE to rename it and be able to use it/convert it. How can I do that without losing the file or anything similar to that? I don't mind if the solution is very long, as long as it works I'm fine with it.
    Please help me!
    Thank you in advance.

Can you open the file using the application's menu open command, then save it with a different name?
Open the application with which you created the file. In the application menu go to File > Open and try opening the file. Then save it with a different name.
You can also try the move (mv) command in Terminal:
Open Terminal in your applications > utilities folder.
Type in mv with a space after it. Do not press return yet.
Drag the problem file to the Terminal window. This should result in the file with the directory path being entered in the window after the mv+space. Do not press return yet.
Enter another space. Now type a new name for the file. In order to make things easy we are going to have the file go to your Home folder on your main drive.
Now press return. This should move the file from the old place to the new place with a new name.
If you do not want to risk erasing the first file while creating the second in case something goes wrong, use the copy "cp" command instead of the move "mv".

  • [SOLVED] A File Manager That Can Group Folders and Files like Fences

I want to create a custom desktop environment in Arch Linux and I'm looking for a file manager that is similar to Windows Explorer in terms of features and functionality and can group files and folders into fences like Stardock Fences does for the desktop in Windows.
If such a feature isn't available then I, at least, want to group both files and folders into individual groups based on custom parameters and not just Date or Size.
Is there any File Manager in Linux that can fulfill my requirements? If not, is there any file manager which can be extended (by scripting or programming) easily to include the features that I'm looking for?

ANOKNUSA wrote:The important thing to keep in mind here is that Windows Explorer is the foundation for the entire Windows interface. If you've ever seen the exploere.exe process die for any reason, you know what I mean. That's the reason it's able to utilize functionality like Fences. In order to get the same kind of functionality in Linux, you'd need a very similar setup. KDE + Konqueror are what come closest from my experience, since the Plasma interface actually has widgets built in that do what you want, but if you use KDE then you use KDE. Full stop. KDE is highly customizable, but only if you use its environment and parts.
Nah. I don't wanna use KDE. I've heard that it's the most resource hungry DE out there.
OK, maybe not something like fences in a file manager but I, at least, want to be able to group files AND folders (within a folder or a directory) under a single parameter and that parameter can be custom and not just pre defined like Date and Size.
Huh. I'm down to Konquerer, like you suggested, and Dolphin. Can I use either as a stand alone file manager in a custom DE in Arch without using KDE?
