Can't share internet with iPhone4 via Airport with MacBook Pro on Ethernet

I'm in Iraq being abused by a criminal ISP offering 256K (yes, kilobytes per second!) connectivity via a cat IV ethernet cable to my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.5.9). I have a first-gen iPhone4 (16G, version 4.2.1), it will not connect to the internet via airport to my MacBook.  I'm getting a good wi-fi symbol on my iPhone, the Airport is correctly finding my MacBook's network, and it properly demands/accepts my WEP password.  But I cannot get mail, go on line or use any apps.
Under the DHCP tab on my MacBook's network on the iPhone's Settings/Wi-Fi page...I have a good IP Address and Subnet Mask.  Previously I've also had numbers show up on the Router and DNS lines as well...but they are now blank.  I have never had numbers on the Search Domains or Client ID lines.
Can anyone tell me what's missing to get my internet sharing working?
Thanks!

OK, on your iPhone you have four fields that need to completed for any type of WiFi networking to operate.  The fields are (in order) the IP address of your device, the subnet mask for your network, the "router" IP address, and finally the DNS addresses.
I'm not sure what these numbers look like on an ad hoc network, but a typical router based network would look like:
Device IP:  192.168.1.x with x being between 2 and 255
Subnet mask:  255.255.255.0
"Router IP":  192.168.1.1
DNS:  usually a pair of IP address separated by a comma.  Sometimes this is supplied by the network you are conneccted to, other times you specify an address (like OpenDNS or Google's DNS service)
If your phone has an IP address of 169.x.x.x, it means that your ad hoc network is not supplying it with an IP address.  Make sure that the DHCP box is checked (the ad hoc network will assign an IP address) or manually assign IP address.
To be honest with you, I'd go out and buy a basic N router (about $40 US), plug it in to your ethernet connection, and connect your devices to that.  You get far better security as the router has a firewall and you can use WPA2-AES encryption on the wireless side - and it is easier to set up.

  • Can't share Internet from Mac to AirPort Extreme via Thunderbolt Ethernet

    Hey there!
I'm trying to essentially use a 2013 AirPort Extreme as an AP for the network. It's connected via WAN to a Mac via a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter.
I'm having a hard time telling OS X (10.10)/ OS X Server that I want it to take the Internet from "iPhone USB" and share it with "Thunderbolt Ethernet". With or without OS X Server's DHCP/DNS "help". I've been experiencing issues with Internet Sharing for years on OS X, so the fact that I'm having an issue today is no surprise, I'm just hoping someone out there has a solution.
If I go back to Internet Sharing in System Preferences, the "share Internet connection from" combo box is blank, rather than showing "iPhone USB".
Also, I'm unsure as to whether I should be using OS X Server... I know it's not necessary for simple Internet connection sharing, but I'd like to use DHCP and DNS services with this setup at least eventually.... Obviously just getting Internet to the AirPort is first-priority.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Kevin,
Let me try to get this straight, it seems like you want to bridge the fee-based wifi network and your home wireless network using your MB.
I don't know if you have done the following steps already on your MB:
    1) Choose Apple > System Preferences, and then click Sharing.
    2) Select Internet Sharing.
    3) Choose a network service from the “Share your connection from” pop-up menu, AirPort in your case.
    4) Select a networking service to share your Internet connection from the “To computers using” list, ethernet in your case.
Sorry, yes indeed it is straight from Mac Help titled "Sharing your Internet connection." and it sounds like you have done the sharing part already. You wrote about something wrong with your MB. It might be helpful to write what is wrong with your MB, AirPort Extreme, or your "other computers." Preciseness can definably help us help you.
    May you solve the problem.

  • HP 1200 Laserjet is no longer working via Airport express &MacBook pro

Connection has been working just fine for 2 years and suddenly It gives me just one line of little symbols when trying to print. If I connect printer directly via USB works fine. I have made no changes that can explain what happened. What I have done already: restart everything, computer, the printer and also the Airport express connection. I downloaded the latest driver version as well.
When checking via printer utilities the connection it says there are problems connecting the printer and the server.
    Any lights on this?
    Thanks!

I just got my airport express tonight and had the same problem with my HP 1200 all in one deskjet. After a couple hours of searching and installing the gimpdrivers that did not work I ran across another post that linked me to: http://www.linuxfoundation.org/en/OpenPrinting/MacOSX/hpijs
    It worked!
    Install all 3 dmg files
    gplgs-8.64so-ub.dmg
    Foomatic-RIP 4.0.1
    hpijs-3.9.2-ub.dmg
Install in that order. They won't install unless you do. One of them does say it is for 10.3 or newer but that did not effect me on 10.4.
Once installed, Add a new printer (delete old ones) then select HP from drop down and scroll and select : HP PSC foomatic/hpijs.
After that you should be go to go.

  • Can I run Internet explorer 8 on a new MacBook Pro

Guys (and gals), I'm stuck!  I love everything about my iPhone and iPad and the way I can run my business through them...but!!!
The company I do most of my work for has their website stuck on the past.  In order to get my orders and arrange work for my subs, I have to use Internet explorer and it requires active x controls.  Am I going to be able to make this set up work on a MacBook?  I wish I could do it from the iPad but all the remote viewers and ie importers fail to let me do the work that the active x allows me access to.  Ideas?

  • Sharing internet connection with Windows via Airport

    Happy New Year, all!
I have an iMac Intel Core Duo connected to an ADSL modem via ethernet. I'd like to share my internet connection via Airport with a Windows laptop (which is running XP with SP2). I've read that this is possible and I've tried setting it up but the laptop isn't seeing the Airport network at all.
I've created a network with security off, from the Airport drop-down menu in the iMac menu bar, turned Internet Sharing on (Share from: ethernet - to computers using: Airport). I have Windows Sharing and Personal Web Sharing turned on, and my firewall is off. But the Airport network still doesn't show up on the laptop.
Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong, or at least point me in the right direction.
    Many thanks in advance.

i am having the same problem. i have the mac connected but when i go to windows i can't get the page open that says to connect. when i run the mouse over the icons at the bottom of the page it shows the airport signal being excellent. but i just can't get to a page to enter the "key to connect". it is greyed out and shows that it is limited or not connectivity.
    please someone help!

  • IPhone 3GS can't share internet connection with a windows 7 64 bit version?

I have an iPhone 3GS with the latest iOS installed, then the personal hotspot option is ON and it shares internet connection to a laptop with Windows 7, 32 bit version and with the latest version of itunes installled (10.6.1.7).
But when I connect this same iPhone to another laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit version with the latest version of itunes 64 bit, there is no internet sharing, no error, no signal of fails, it is just as if the hotspot option were OFF.
Its is posible to share internet from iPhone 3GS to a PC with Windows 7, 64 bit version?

Hey there @slee , welcome back
I would suggest trying the steps in this guide for the installation troubles you are having on your one specific Windows 7 computer.
Windows 7: The Progress Bar on the Software Installation Stops or Stalls
You can also try disabling your firewall while you run the installation to see if that helps.
    Let me know the results!

  • Can i share iTunes music between my kids with different apple id's?

Can i share iTunes music between my kids with different apple id's?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Yes, even though they have their own IDs for the iTunes Store, if everyone uses the same ID for home sharing, you can share the content.

  • I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extrem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptops hard drive??

I can not store all my Music on my internal Macbook pro hard drive so I am storing it on a large external drive connected to my airport extreme (2 TB drive plugged into the USB port).  I see the drive on my laptop and I can add and delete files no problem.  How do I get Itunes to search for the music here with out trying to copy it to my laptop's hard drive?  I don't have enough space to do that.

How did you move the music to the external drive?  What exactly is on the drive?  The entire iTunes folder or only music?  If it is the entire iTunes folder you can do the option+start suggestion earlier.  If you copied only music and did so by dragging it there then you need to delete it again and consolidate/organize it there instead so iTunes tracks the move.  iTunes 12 for Mac: Change where your iTunes files are stored - http://support.apple.com/kb/PH19507

  • Can I share the books I have purchased with my wife even if she is not on the same account?

Can I share the books I have purchased with my wife if she is not on the same account as I am?

Then the answer is that each of you purchases and syncs from your respective iTunes accounts and Apple IDs, therefore to transfer any purchased item from one iPad to the other would require syncing that iPad with the other person's account, and that will mess up all your respective synced data.
Of course you can swap iPads for bookreading, I suppose.

  • HT4557 can I share music on my itunes account with my wife's iphone?

Can I share music on my itunes account with my wife's iphone?

I have a similar problem, and have followed your suggestions with great success.
We both have seperate itunes accounts and both share the same login on our computer (although I could create a login for her if it would be better).
As I said, setting up her phone worked great, I could add all of my music, and select the apps I already had to put on her phone, etc.  However, now I cannot log back into my account from itunes on our computer, I just get an error saying iTunes is not available at this time.
My phone also started asking for her itunes details each time I went to the App store / itunes on my phone, but I've changed this back to me.
So, my question is, how do I get back into itunes on my computer?  Should it be possible to keep swapping accounts?

  • Can i play internet radio through my airport to my stereo?

Can i play internet radio through my airport to my stereo? ps I am not very technical so easy answers would be appreciated.
    Thanks

For the block party we just had I was doing just that. I already had a wireless network in my house so what I did was connected an Airport Express to my wireless network in my garage. The Airport Express has an audio jack on it. To this jack, I connected my amp and speakers down in the garage. I was then able to connect iTunes to the speakers over the wireless network.
One additional benefit was that using the Remote app on my iPhone I was able to control my iTunes remotely from the garage to change music from downstairs.
It all worked like a charm.

  • Beginner question: Can I create a hybrid home network between an ethernet-connected iMac and an airport connected Macbook Pro using a hybrid router?

I recently acquired an friend's used iMac, I don't know anything about networks and all I can find is how to create a Wi-Fi home network but nothing about hybrid Ethernet/Wi-Fi networks.
I have the iMac connected via Ethernet to the wireless router.
I connect via Airport with my MacBook Pro
I would appreciate if anyone has any pointers as to how I can start setting up a network between my ethernet-connected iMac and WiFi connected Macbook.
    Thanks!

ethernet and airport/WiFi are just transmission media for the same network. If you can get internet on both computers, they are networked. Using the same router = same network.
So now, what is it you want to do? Share files between them?
