  • How to connect to Xbox Live with the Actiontek GT704-WGB wireless router

If the title got you here, then you are probably a Verizon DSL customer who is trying to connect your Xbox to Xbox Live with the Actiontek GT704-WGB wireless router and are getting nothing but errors saying, "your NAT is set too high", or, "Your MTU setting is too low", etc.  Well, after many calls to Xbox support, Actiontek support, and Verizon support, I finally came up with the solution myself.
All that is needed is a little techie know-how about router settings and you'll do just fine!  However, if you are uncomfortable with doing it yourself (and it is really really easy to do!) then you can call Verizon support and have a tech support rep remotely conntect to your PC and make the changes for you: however, you have to speak with someone in advanced tech support and to do that you have to agree to a 1 year support contract to the tune of $14.95 per month in order for them to do it!  Scam???  You be the judge!
So, here are the steps to take to get it working and by the way, YOU CAN NOT GET THE XBOX TO CONNECT TO THIS ROUTER WIRELESSLY!!  YOU MUST CONNECT YOUR XBOX TO THE ROUTER WITH AN ETHERNET CABLE IN ORDER FOR THIS TO WORK!!!  If you don't heed this warning, you will unfortunatly go through all the steps below, only to find that you get the same errors but, ethernet is faster than wireless so it's better!....right?.....right?   (hears crickets chirping)....right?  Oh well, I tried!  Also, you must have your Xbox on in order to change the router settings (which you'll see why later) Anyway, here's the steps:
    1) On your PC, open a browser window and type in the address bar:  192.168.1.1 and press enter.
    2) You will then see the interface on which you will make changes to the router's settings.  If at any time you are prompted for a username and password (which should happen right after you press enter) the defaults are: username: admin password: password.  If you have changed these, enter what you changed them to.
3)Click on the icon on the top labelled "Advanced Setup"
4)In the left section, click "WAN IP Address"
5)At the warning screen, click "yes"
6)Scroll down until you see "MTU setting" and enter 1370.  NOTElease don't be tempted to either enter 1500 or leaving it at 1500 (which is the default) because you might know that 1500 is the maximum at which this can be set which is TOO HIGH AND WILL NOT WORK!  Trust me and enter 1370 and then click on "apply"
7)Click on the top icon labelled "Security"
8)In the left column, click on "applications".  This is where we are going to open the 3 ports that Xbox Live uses to communicate with your Xbox.
9)In the drop down box labelled "PC Name" select "Xbox 360". This is why you had to have your console on and connected cuz if you didn't, it would not show up on the drop down list!
10)Under "category" click on the bubble next to "user"
11)Click on "New" which is one of the blue buttons near the bottom.
12)As for the rule name, I entered "Xbox" but you can put whatever you want but I'd use that so you know it's the ports you opened for the console.
13)For protocol, select TCP. (Yes you will also open the same ports for UDP but for some reason if you select TCP.UDP instead of doing them seperatly it doesn't work.....I dunno why!?
14)For all 3 "Port start", "Port End", and "Port Map Start" put the # 80.
    15)Click "apply"
16)Now, select UDP and put the same port # 80 and again click "apply"
17)Repeat steps 13 through 16 except with the numbers 3074 and 53, clicking apply after each one.  What you should have now on the bottom are a list of all the ports you opened, one TCP and one UDP for each number totalling 6 entries.
18)Click "back" to return to the Applications screen.
19)If you have to, select Xbox 360 for PC name, and click the bubble next to "user" and you'll now see the entry called "Xbox" or whatever you called it.
20)Click that entry to highlight it and then click the blue "add" button to the left and then click "apply" at the bottom.
21)Close the browser screen and turn off your PC and Xbox and any other hardware connected to the router.
22)Turn the router off and unplug it and wait about 5 minutes.  It can take this long for any residual current in the router to dissapate and for the NAT table to clear itself.
23)Turn on the router and wait for the internet light to come on green meaning the router has booted and has an internet connection.
24)Turn on the Xbox AND ONLY THE XBOX!
25)There is no need to go into network setting as when the Xbox is connected by ethernet, it automatically configures and connects intself.  You can, however go into network settings and perform a connection test but this to is not necessary.
You now should be able to connect to Xbox Live!  If not, you've done something wrong and must either go through all the steps again or let Verizon do it for you (for a fee that is).

I followed jtktlw's instructions to the letter.  Problem was I had already enabled UPnP before doing so.  Afterward I disabled UPnP and rebooted....no change.  I reset the MTU to 1500...boom, it works.  Seems for me all I needed was to open the right ports to get it to work.

  • I need to limit the range of my wireless router WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.

I need to limit the range of my wireless router   WRT54G - Any ideas are appreciated.  I don't want to put on a password if I can avoid it.   Thanks for you advice in advance.  Milwaukie

Trying to confine a wireless signal to your home is not a practical solution to security concerns.  The distance that a wireless signal will travel is mainly limited by the receiving antena and sensitivity of the receiver.  An ordinary wireless receiver can probably pick up your signal for 200 to 1000 feet.  A great receiver could probably pick up your signal from a mile or more.  The best alternatives are:
    a) convert your system to a wired system, or,
    b) encrypt your wireless using a good encryption method (WPA or preferably WPA2) and use a strong password.

  • How do I find the IP of my wireless router??

I know this a bit off-topic, but it seemed the only place to post this. . .
I've bought a belkin wireless router so i can use my laptop round the house (the airport extreme in my G5 is too weak to get through our walls). The laptop (and my PSP ) finds the belkin and connects to the internet/network through it, but I cannot access the admin page of the router to set up a password. I'e entered the IP address listed in its manual, but it doesn't connect to anything. I've tried other obvious numbers with no success.
There's nothing about this on the belkin site, and I've searched Versiontracker to see if i can find anything that will scan my network for it - does anyone have any suggestions
    Cheers
    Steve

First, I would reiterate what previous posters have suggested, using a browser besides Safari. I know first hand that Safari does not play well with Belkin gear.
    If not, try this:
    1. Finder>applications>Utilities>network Utilities.app
    2. Use the "traceroute" function and use something like www.google.com. Most likely the first IP returned is your gateway.
    3. Use the "port scan" function to scan all ports using the IP above (leave the field blank) and check the returned ports. Almost all routers use port 80 but some may be configured to use 8080, 443 or some user defined port.
    4. Try connecting to the router by typing http://192.168.1.1:8080 for example using the ip address of the gateway and the ports retuned by the tools separated by a colon. Also try https://x.x.x.x The router may have been set to only connect using ssl/tls via port 443
    5. If none of this works you could try doing a factory restore which will be outlined in the manual for the router. Just be advised that any configuration currently in the router will be lost for good.
Good luck. If any of this doesn't work post back for more ideas.

  • Can you use a time capsule's wireless hard drive capabilities without plugging it into a wireless router?

I recently used it as a bridge router from another router but then turn that function off. But now if I just have the time capsule set up on its own I can't even find it on airport utility. It seems funny as it itself is a wireless router...
    Thanks for your help

A "hard reset" will not erase the Time Capsule's hard disk. That would require a separate procedure. Your backup data will not be affected.
You can connect it to a router if you wish, but a "hard reset" is more likely to result in less confusion.

  • What is the best Mac Compatible wireless router?

    Hi,
I currently use a D-Link Dsl 300T Modem plugged directly into the computer. I used to use it with the airport express, but that went pop and stopped working a few months ago. I'm moving house and will need to set up a wireless network that several computers will be running off. (I used to have problems with the D-link modem when I ran several computers off it before) So could I just by a wireless router with a modem combined instead of buying a new modem and an airport express again? What are the best non Apple wireless routers out there?
    Many Thanks
    Rob

  • What is the best long range wireless router, airport extreme or time capsule? Or?

I need a wireless router that will reach 350--400 feet with a strong enough signal to use Netflix. This will be line of site in a rural area reaching from one trailer to another. Both trailers run on 12volt solar systems but trailer A has an inverter to convert to 120volts for a wireless router. Trailer B only has 12volt power so the Internet signal must come exclusively from the wireless router in Trailer A. There is no electricity available for booster wireless routers in between the two trailers.
We don't need all of the bells and whistles like being able to connect to printers etc. This is just about sending out a strong enough signal to watch Netflix. Which is more powerful for this purpose? Airport Extreme or Time Capsule? If neither of those is strong enough, what is?
    Thanks,
    SV

The issue you are really facing is the long distance (at the WiFi frequencies) you have to travel.  The Extreme has a radiated power of 23 dBm, nominal, which can reach 50-150 feet depending on you you are talking to...and that is measured in a closed test chamber at ideal air temperature and humidity, no obstructions.  In the real world that signal will be attenuated significantly just by the air alone, assuming completely obstacle free path, and subject to interference from other sources in the area, such as cell phones and cordless phones, and microwave ovens.
The AirPort units have enclosed antennas that cannot be connected with an external gain antenna.  So you are stuck with what is in the box.
Other products, commercial, do use external antennas so you may want to do some research in that area.
Keep in mind that the 802.11n protocol uses two frequency bands, 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz.  Signal attenuation increases rapidly as a function of frequency.  You will get much less distance if you use the 5 GHz band, so it would be best to restrict operation to 2.4 GHz.
Now, another aspect, at 2.4 GHz you are in the Ultra High Frequency portion of the spectrum...exposure to radio frequency energy at high power should not be considered a safe or desirable thing in the UHF range.  Most communication specialialists try to minimize exposure at these frequencies.  The reason for saying this is you will need significantly greater radiated power than the Extreme can deliver to reach 400 feet.  You might want to do some searches on health effects of the RF energy you will be transmitting.
So, bottom-line, I have difficulty encouraging using wireless tranmission at the WiFi frequencies for the distance you need.

  • TS1819 Mac OS X 10.7.4. How do I configure my network settings so I don't have to enter the password to my wireless router every time I start up or come back from sleep mode?

When I first got my MacBook Pro my wireless network at home (Linksys Wireless Router) popped right up and I entered the password and had no problems automatically connected after that. I went to a friends house this weekend who also has a wireless router named Linksys, obviously with a different password. Ever since I connected to her network I have to enter my network password at home everytime I start my computer up or wake it up from sleep mode.
My questions is what caused this to happen and how do I reconfigure my network settings so that I don't have to re-enter my password all the time?

  • Does the extreme take the place of my wireless router?

    Hi,
Does the Airport Extreme replace my wireless router or does it work off my existing wireless system? Will my Mac Mini also recognise it and allow my Mac Mini to be accessed on the wireless network?

  • Can I replace the FiOS D-Link Wireless Router with an AEBS?

I have FiOS and the Verizon supplied D-Link Wireless a/g router that came with the service. I've been happy as a clam with the service but I just bought my first Mac (a 15" MBP) and an AEBS. Ideally it would be nice to replace the D-Link with the AEBS. I tried to do this and everything worked except for FiOS Video On Demand (VOD). It complained about some router issue. So my current setup includes using both the D-Link and the AEBS whereby I have wireless turned off on the D-Link and my AEBS bridged to the D-Link. This seems to be working fine in that wirless to the AEBS is working and my FiOS TV functions are working as expected.
Again, ideally, I'd like to just have AEBS in the mix and take out the D-Link router. Can this be done? It seems the Verizon supplied NIM box likes to only be plugged into the D-Link and not the AEBS.
BTW, I haven't found any definitive posts about how to do this. I've seen posts on the bridging aspect and when an ActionTec router is in the mix but not a D-Link.
    Thanks in advance.

Having similar problem - not clear from your post...did you put the Actiontec in bridge mode and the AEBS Connection Sharing to distribute IP addresses? Or is the AEBS in bridge mode? I thought the Actiontec had to handle NAT, DHCP, etc. and the AEBS had to be in bridge mode. If you have the Actiontec in bridge mode and the AEBS doing the DHCP, NAT, etc., can you describe how you have it wired and the settings in more detail? I am trying to extend my network with an Airport Express using my AEBS as the base station, but can't seem to establish the WDS with the AEBS in bridge mode...am stuck right now with the AEBS in bridge mode and dead spots in the farther reaches of my house. Any ideas or help you could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
