- From a physical data model point of view, yes.
- From a logical data model point of view, not.
To resume, you can but one of the fact must be in the business model layer of the repository designed as a dimension of the other fact table.

You can join any two table which has some relationship but ideally you don't join Fact to Fact because its not a good practice and degrades performance..

how do i join fact tables with higher dimension levels with discoverer?

is there a way to get correct values for X without creating a dimension like

another way of asking this is whether you can create a summary table in Discoverer at a higher level than a dimension's fundamental grain. In other words - the summary examples in the documentation all describe leaving out one or more of your dimensions... they are either left in or completely taken out. But, some of the most effective summarization occurs when you summarize daily data to a monthly level. Assuming that I have a sales table (at a daily level, and a key value sales_date), and a table date_dim (primary key sales_date), I would like to create a summary sales_month_summary where the sales are grouped on month_year (which is a field in the sales_date table).
How is this done? I suspect that we can't use the date_dim table with the summary (due to the problems noted by the poster above). Do we have to create another table "month_dim"? Do we have to fold all of the desired date attributes (month, quarter, year) into the summary? Obviously we'd like to re-use all of the pertinent already existing date items (quarter, month, year, etc.), not recreate them over again, which would result in essentially two sets of items in the EUL. [One used for this month summary, and another used for the detail.]
I searched the forum - someone asked this same question back in 2000 - there was no answer provided.
The only other thought I have is to "snowflake" the date_dim into two tables and two folders, one at a date level, another at the month level. Then the detail tables can connect to date_dim (which is linked to month_dim), while the summary data can connect directly to month_dim.

Join fact with another fact like a dimension

Does it work if I join fact table with another fact table as a dimention(created the dummy hierarchy and add the sum() to the measure existed in the table)?
If I pick the measure value in the fact table(which is configured like a dim), I will get the correct number? Or multiplied number?
If there is any good way of work around please let me know

Hi,
You can create an Alias Table in the Physical Layer for the Fact table which you want to use as a Dimension Table. And start using the Dimension Table. And if you want any measure values to be used from the Fact, then you can extract that too.
This should simplify your work too.

Joining Facts With Different Grains to NonConfirming Dimensions - Mystery

Taxonomy Used is - CD stands for Confirmed Dimension && NCD stands for Non Confirmed Dimension.
I have 3 Dimensions (CD1,NCD2,NCD3) and 2 facts (F1 & F2).
==> Fact F1 can be joined to only CD1 and NCD2 dimensions. Grain of Fact F1 is same as CD1 i.e., Nbr of records matches 1 to 1 between CD1 and F1F2
==> Fact F2 can be joined to only CD1 and NCD3 dimensions. Grain of Fact F2 is CD1 & NCD3. There could be multiple records for same value of CD1 within Fact F2, and similarly there could be multiple records for same value of NCD3. But there will always be just 1 and only 1 record for combination of CD1 and NCD3.
Report Requirements:-
1) Get few Metrics from F2 and few from F1 while applying a filter on NCD2. so below columns are needed :-
Dimension Column from NCD2 || Metric from Fact1 || Metric from Fact2
So need to understand how to enforce the relationship between Fact F2 and Dimension NCD2
2) Get few Metrics from F2 and few from F1 while applying a filter on NCD2 and also Display NCD3. so below columns are needed :-
Dimension Column from NCD2 || Dimension Column from NCD3 ||Metric from Fact1 || Metric from Fact2
==> In above case it is perfectly acceptable if Metric from Fact 1 repeats again as Fact1 is at higher Grain as compare to Fact2.

Drill across (joining facts) using Discoverer

Hi,
I've read a few books and article on DW talking about drilling across. It seems a good idea to build multiple star schemas with "conforming" dimensions and then join fact tables (drill across) when needed.
I have tried this solution, and afer a few tests, got to the conclusion that it is preferable to UNION ALL the related facts using a view or a custom folder. Of course this solution is less flexible because we need to find all the required combinations of facts.
Any comments?

I have 3 dimensions : D1, D2, D3 and 2 facts : F1, F2.
Dimensions D1, D2 are related to fact F1.
Dimensions D1, D2, D2 are related to fact F2.
I want to query on fact F2 based on values of dimensions D1 and D2, and then join F1 to get corresponding measures.
When running the query I get the following error:
Invalid combination of joins using different join keys - query cannot be resolved.
I use Oracle Discoverer 9.0.2.53.12.
What would be the best way to work around this restriction?

Hi,
You can make a fact table through any number of ways viz:
- CREATE TABLE syntax , your table design would correspond to the dimensional model (Star Schema / Snowflake Schema) specifications
- You can alternately use an ETL Tool like OWB to design your star schema
As far as I know i dont think Analytical Workspace Manager comes by default with an Oracle DB Installation
- Read any book you find on Dimensional Modeling to get a hang on building Star Schemas and OLAP Concepts. You would definitely find one such book in "The Oracle documentation library"

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off. How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??

I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

Have you verified that your Windows 8.1 is a Pro or Enterprise edition? The Basic edition cannot join a domain.
