CanI copy an encryoted or protected DVD

Is there way to copy my actual encrypted protected movies from the actual disc onto my hard drive?
I have a bunch of retail dvd's I have been collecting and would like to back them up by copying onto my external hard drive. Is there a way?
Thanks,

What is an "actual encrypted protected disc" and an "actual disc?"
FWIW, with the passage of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, is is illegal to assist or offer advice on circumventing copy protection (in the U.S.). It is also against the terms of use for this forum.

Optical discs are prone to read errors, particularly when finger prints, fluff, etc. get on the reading surface, so redundant information is added in such a way that minor errors can be corrected. If the disc is damaged sufficiently seriously, e.g. a deep scratch running around a track, the error correction system fails to correct the error, and you will be unable to read that file on a computer by normal means. Note that only the last .VOB file that was scratched would be unreadable.
I bought a cheap commercial DVD that had a serious pressing error, causing the movie to jump. Windows explorer failed to read the DVD but I did find a program (forgotten which) which made 10 attempts to read the faulty sector before carrying on. The copied movie then played perfectly (well there must have been a minor glitch where the error was, but I couldn't see it).

  • Is there a way to include material in a DVD that some CAN copy?

Is there a way to include material in a DVD that some CAN copy?
I have a 30min project that I am going to burn that is copyrighted. But I’d like to add some stills or maybe a screensaver that the purchaser could copy from the disk and use.
    Thanks!

Copyright is not the same thing as copy protect. Your material may very well be copyrighted, but it won't be copy protected if you are burning the DVD in your Superdrive. You must use a replication house to get copy protection. If you do this, you can include copyable stuff on the disc. I've seen commercial disks with PDF files, etc that you can freely use. I have no experience on how to do it though.
But, don't fool yourself. There really is no copy protection anymore on DVDs. Anyone with an internet connection can figure out how to defeat it using software available free on the internet. All you can do is make it a hassle to copy it.

Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?
I'm about to start encoding to MPEG2 a very important project that I've edited in Final Cut Pro.
It is vital that it cannot be copied by the client or I could lose a lot of money.
In the past this has never been a concern, but in this case it is very important.
What is the best way to prevent a client/people from copying your DVDs?
Is there anything I can do within DVD Studio Pro or is there anything the Replication house can do at the Glass-Mastering stage?
I'm sure this topic has been covered, but a quick search found nothing.
    Thanks guys.

Common problem but no easy answer. It's simply too easy to get around.
If you want to prevent finished master disks being copied in the same way commercial disks are then you will need to get them made at a duplication facility. Not cheap. You can't do it in DVD studio, it's to do with the disk burner.
On a feature film it is very important to prevent copies of work in progress. What a lot of cutting rooms do is make dvd's with the name of the person burnt in and a copy number. Often a large X with 30% opacity is put in the middle of frame.
This can't stop copies being made but at least you will know where they came from. It also seems to make the person who's name is burnt in take more care.
Sorry but thats the best I can offer.

Thanks for your reply, but you might have misunderstood it a bit. I'm NOT trying to buy a movie. ****, I'm not even in the actual Apple Store, when this happens I'm in the library not the Store part of iTunes.
To clarify - I have purchased a physical copy of a movie which came with another physical copy which contains the digital copy. The digital copy is on the DVD, all I need is just to transfer this file to my iPod Touch, for example, I'm not trying to download it from the store or repurchase it and it's not any gift code that I've received, the digital copy is on the disc. This is the first time ever that I've purchased something on a disc and I'm not allowed to access it because the disc hasn't been purchased within my country.
So again - I'm not attempting any purchase or download any purchased digital copy - it's on a DVD I own physically so... why is even the region of my Store relevant, the code I enter is (as I assume) just supposed to check if it's a legal genuine copy (which it is, as I've said - there are 6 discs in the pack: 3 movies on 3 Blu-rays and 3 DVD containing these digital copies of them). If I own it, I think that's proof enough that I have the right to use it. I just don't get it. I fully agree with you and understand your point if there was any purchase going on here, but it's not, it's just - I put a disc into my computer and I can't access it

Great hearing for you all! I thought I was all alone this past weekend. I did learn a lot this weekend. I really like the InDesign product.(half-the-battle) But to be helped by the prestigious “Sandee Cohen” was an honor indeed.”  I ordered the InDesign CC today.  Peter, I appreciate all the feedback on Lynda too. They are loaded with lots of good videos. Derek too honed in on one of the most important aspects!  Since I have been working with Word for most of the first portion of the book this will be a big help. I looked at the comments big help ! Thanks a ton ALL!  Have a wonder day or evening whenever you read this reply.

  • How to convert a Video TS to a format I can copy to DVD

I have a DVD from a friend that he used Video TS format.
I was able to copy an image to a new DVD using Disk Utilites. It started to play the DVD but seconds later it said the DVD has a scratch or something else wrong. I then copied it using another DVD but again as I was test running, it errored out after a few seconds of running the video TS files.
I am not sure if there is a different way I can make an exact copy of this DVD.
It plays well when I insert it to my DVD Read Writer in my eMac. I can even run it straight from DVD Player, I can open the folder and runs fine.
But it stops and errors out only when doing an disk image in Disk Utility.
Anyone knows what I can do ?

    Hi Jose
You will certainly get lots of advices on programs to use here but I will share
a more brute and in my opinion higher quality way.
Use Your miniDV Camera. Connect it to a stand-alone DVD-player and copy
to a new miniDV tape. Use this in iMovie or FCE/P.
This way gives highest quality to my knowledg BUT DON'T be tempted to set
Your Camera into LP-mode. This will result with:
    - jittery and jumpy clips
    - 12-bit sound and because of this severe audio sync problems.
alt. Use a 90 min tape instead of 60 if You need to. They exist at least from
    SONY (premium).

  • How can I copy my slideshow to a dvd?

How can I copy my slideshow on a dvd?

There are many ways to produce slide shows using iPhoto, iMovie or iDVD and some limit the number of photos you can use (iDVD has a 99 chapter (slide) limitation).
If what you want is what I want, namely to be able to use high resolution photos (even 300 dpi tiff files), to pan and zoom individual photos, use a variety of transitions, to add and edit music or commentary, place text exactly where you want it, and to end up with a DVD that looks good on both your Mac and a TV - in other words end up with and end result that does not look like an old fashioned slide show from a projector - you may be interested in how I do it. You don't have to do it my way, but the following may be food for thought!
Firstly you need proper software to assemble the photos, decide on the duration of each, the transitions you want to use, and how to pan and zoom individual photos where required, and add proper titles. For this I use Photo to Movie. You can read about what it can do on their website:
    http://www.lqgraphics.com/software/phototomovie.php
(Other users here use the alternative FotoMagico:  http://www.boinx.com/fotomagico/homevspro/ which you may prefer - I have no experience with it.)
Neither of these are freeware, but are worth the investment if you are going to do a lot of slide shows. Read about them in detail, then decide which one you feel is best suited to your needs.
Once you have timed and arranged and manipulated the photos to your liking in Photo to Movie, it exports the file to iMovie  as a DV stream. You can add music in Photo to Movie, but I prefer doing this in iMovie where it is easier to edit. You can now further edit the slide show in iMovie just as you would a movie, including adding other video clips, then send it to iDVD 7, or Toast,  for burning.
You will be pleasantly surprised at how professional the results can be!
To simply create a slide show in iDVD 7 onwards from images in iPhoto or stored in other places on your hard disk or a connected server, look here:

  • Error code -36.  Two MACs: One mac can copy DVD data, one can't.

On the G5 that appears in the profile below, I cannot copy VOB files without getting error code -36 in which the copy operation times out. Another older 1.6G G5 can copy. The problem computer has a Pioneer 115D burner. Older computer has a Sony U10A.
I believe the problem has come with the new (4 months) Pioneer drive, cause I definitely used to be able to copy off the DVD drive, just don't remember how recently. Doggoneit!
    Thanks.

I just determined that the same function thru the network was a problem which pointed to the target fw800 G-drive. Then I started copying thru the network and off a DVD to a fw800 G-RAID drive, and the copy was a success.
So now the performance of this G-Drive (non-journaled). Why would this drive behave this way?

  • Can't copy photos from iPhoto backup DVD - Privileges Problem

I have created several DVD backups of photos from iPhoto, but when I open the DVDs and try to copy and paste photos it says that I can't because I don't have sufficient privileges. I know about the possibility of clicking on the "sharing and permissions" and "Ignoring ownership on this volume" tabs from the get info section, but it is not possible for me as the DVD's info comes up with that area translucent, thus I can see those options but have no possibility of choosing any of them in "sharing and permissions".
Does anyone know a way to overcome this?
Does this mean I have to do something like use SUDO commands or something else complicated just to copy and paste photos from DVDs???
Is there not an option to make backup DVDs on iPhoto which are copyable?
Why would anyone backup photos so that they can't be accessed to copy and paste?
    Thank you

If you made the Back Ups with iPhoto's Share -> Burn command then when you insert the Disk into the Mac it will appear in the iPhoto Window. Drag the Events from the Disk to the Library heading in the iPhoto Window to restore them.

  • Can I copy the contents of a dvd to the hard drive?

How can I copy the contents of my dvd to the hard drive? It is from a home movie that was transferred onto a DVD. I would like to send it via e-mail. is this possible?
    thanks

You need to convert it first to a smaller file.  You can't typically send several gigabytes of video via email.  You could copy the contents of the DVD to your mobile me account by making a Disk Image of the DVD using the Disk Utility.  A typical DVD is 4.7 gigabytes, so the coping will take over night.  If you just want people to view the DVD movie, you might want to rip it from the DVD and put it on Youtube as a private video.  I would recommend doing this with DVDxDV.  It can break up a long video into multiple parts and upload it to Youtube.

  • Can I copy from VHS/TV to DVD?

I have some recordings on VHS tape that I would like to get put onto a DVD. How can I get this into my computer so I can copy it to a DVD? I have a VCR connected with my TV - Sony 60" Wega rear projection High Definition TV. What kind of connections do I need to copy it from the VHS tape to my computer????? I'm illiterate at this type of thing so need some simple directions. Is there a program I can edit it in? Like iDVD or iMovie??? Any and all help is greatly appreciated! THANKS! Gary

I have copied over VHS and DVD material into my computer for editing, and it isn't hard. What IS required is a digital recorder/camcorder (now less than $300, and anybody playing with video editing really ought to have one). First, record your old material onto a DV tape (I use Digital8, but any format will work), using whatever inputs exist on the recording device (I've used both the S-Video and composite connections). The reason for doing this is digitize the video (and audio). Once you've done this intermediate step, you can import your material via firewire into iMovie or Final Cut, or whatever editing software you use.
The VHS and DVD footage I've used is all home movie material. There are copyright issues involved in most commercial video out there, but that's another topic. I haven't noted any major degradation to the original video quality.

  • Can't play CSS Protected DVDs T410

    Hello,
I recently reinstalled my OS on my T410.  I've got the Optiarc DVD RW AD-7930H optical drive for it.  After installing all the drivers: chipset, video, audio, etc... to where everything functions nicely, except for the DVD RW drive.
The drive reads/writes CDs/DVDs and can even play non CSS (Content Scrambling System) DVDs that are burned from a different machine.
    What occurs exactly is this:
    1) I insert a CSS protected DVD and then the drive spins up and detects the disc.
    2) The OS (Windows 7 x64) detects that there is a disc by displaying the disc mouse icon
    3) Nothing shows up in "My Computer"
    4) Windows Media Player can't read the disc
    5) VLC Media player can't read the disc,
    6) etc...
So I'm not really sure other than that the computer is missing a piece of software, that is proprietary I imagine, and most likely came with the machine when I originally bought it many years ago.  I've done vanilla installs before and managed to get it to work, I just don't remember what I did.
The technical support folks on the phone didn't quite get my question until I explained it several times and my machine is out of warranty anyway.  They suggested calling sales and getting discs for my custom made T410, which I never received anyway when I got it, originally.
    Any ideas?
    thx,
    Chris

I had a similar issue before and had to choose a region for the drive to make it work. Like you said it can only be changed 5 times and a reinstall of the OS won't reset the counter.
There are software available that will accept DVD's with any region no matter what region you have choosen for the drive. One example is Slysoft AnyDVD that will run in the background so don't need to rip the DVD before playback. It will work fine with the Optiarc. Software like AnyDVD is fully legal in many countries, but not sure about USA. Using such software and won't need to ever change the region for the drive so make it region-free.
