Cannot connect to SMB server if the name contains a dash (-)

Hi,
maybe someone has a workaround this: When the name of a server contains a dash "-" then one cannot connect to the share, even by using the IP address instead of the name.
I would like to access the file system in the company I'm working for from home. The company uses MS-Win. The server names are like "xyz-asd". The easy way (for me) would be that my company changes the naming convention for the servers. But the IT guru rightly says that he is standard conform and don't see a reason to change for the personal needs of one user. By searching the Internet I could confirm that it is a bug in the Mac implementation, but could not find anything about to fix it or work around it.
Anybody here has a clue?

Oops, I missed that part of your post but I see it now...
Why are you sure it's the dash character in the name? Can you post the link that made you think that? There was a problem when Tiger first came out that was something like this, but it was related to password encryption.
I did a search with your log error and found a thread here at the Apple Discussions that might help. MacNN's forums have another thread with possible help.
Sorry I wasn't more help. But maybe something in one of those threads will help.

    I'm installing SCCM 2012. i have a 2 server boxes. 1x sccm and 1x dedicated SQL. sccm installation is stuck @ connecting to DB.
    SQL server is 2012 with SP2, static 1433 port used.installation account used is already sysadmin, sccm computer account also added into SQL local admins. ports 1433, 4022, 445 are already FW open in between SCCM box and SQL Box?

    The docs are "proper". They give you all the technical details needed. They assume however that you know how to translate the stated requirements, like the ports necessary (as documented at
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh427328.aspx ), into the environment you are working in. They cannot give you a click by click guide because that would only be applicable to
    generic lab environments.

    I have tried from so many forms. This is so frustrating. Thank for everyone/anyone who wants to help. So this is what happened: I had to uninstall my previous sqlserver 2012(which worked great) for some reason, and I uninstalled everything from that download.
    Then I installed the trial edition of sql server 2012 (64 Bit) and It wouldn't connect to the database. (Error mentioned above.) My local DB is COWBOYS. (COWBOYS is also my computer name.) After this, I have tried downloading sqlexpress and sqlserver 64bit
    many times and cannot connect to my local DB. 
    How do I connect to my Local DB? 
    Also, I think this might help: (When I run sqlserve.exe, which I was able to find in C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\LocalDB\Binn, I get an error: Your SQL server installation is either corrupt or has been tampered with(Error getting
    instance ID from name). Please uninstall then re-run setup to correct this problem.
    I would happily re install it, if it wasn't my 20th time.
    I don't have any remote connections, I don't use username/password, only window authentication. I work mostly on visual studio, but without able to store /retrieve data, I don't know how to survive.
    May be the solution is very simple, but I am too frustrated. 
    Some of the things I have tried:
    From a command prompt, enter one of the following commands:

    It sounds like there are a couple things going on here.  First check if you have a successful install of SQL Server, then we'll figure out the connection issues.
    Can you launch SQL Server Configuration Manager and check for SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) if default instance or SQL Server (other name) if you've configured your instance as a named instance.  Once you find this, make sure the service is started. 
    If not started, try to start it and see if it throws an error.  If you get an error, post the error message your hitting.  If the service starts, you can then launch SSMS and try to connect.  If you have a default instance, you can use the machine
    name in the connection dialog.  Ex:  "COWBOYS" where Cowboys is the machine name.  However, if you named the SQL Server instance during install, you'll need to connect using the machine\instance format.  Ex:  COWBOYS\Romo (where Romo
    is the instance name you set during install).
    You can also look at the summary.txt file in the SQL Server setup error logs to see what happened on the most recent install.  Past install history is archived in the log folder if you need to dig those up to help troubleshoot, but the most
    recent one may help get to the bottom of it if there is an issue with setup detecting a prior instance that needs to be repaired.

  • Users cannot connect over SMB 10.10.1 server.app 4.0 and 4.0.3

    Hello,
    I have an issue where users cannot connect to a server for files sharing over SMB.
    Info:
    All users on 10.10.1
    2 Servers on 10.10.1
    Server.app 4.0.3 but issue was also present using 4.0
    SMB connection works when connecting to the OD Master
    SMB does not work when connecting to the OD Replica ServerBut AFP works fine when connecting to the OD Replica Server.
    I have destroyed and re-added the OD replica but that did not seem to help

    I suspect the problem is to do with Kerberos and in relation to this server being an OD Replica.

    I have the same problem although I upgraded from Lion Server to Mountain Lion Server. The error appears to go hand in hand with this error.
    userInit: CFPreferences: user home directory for user kCFPreferencesCurrentUser at /Network/Servers/fullyqualifieddomainname/Users/user is unavailable. User domains will be volatile.
    I've read a number of things to try. A lot of people point to DNS being a problem, but I'm confident this is correct in my environment.

    How Can i solve this?

    1. Make sure SQL Server Service is running
    2. If a named instance, make sure SQL Server browser service is running
    3. Make sure SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections
    4. Examine the SQL Server error log for messages confirming that SQL is listening on the expected network interfaces and ports
    5. Test server connectivity with PING from the client machine
    6. Test port connectivity using TELNET or PowerShell to the server and port (from step 4) from the client machine.  For example
    a. TELNET <server-name> 1433
    b. PowerShell: 1433 | % { echo ((new-object Net.Sockets.TcpClient).Connect("YourServerName",$_)) "server listening on TCP port $_" }
    7. Check firewall settings if step 5 or 6 connectivity test fails

    The version is 8.1.0.
    This next window is the point where I select activation by phone.
    This final window shows that the "response code" is not returned.  I get an

  • Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct

    Everyday I use Command + K to bring up the "Connect to Server" dialog, select the server from "Favorite Servers", click the Connect button, receive a prompt to provide my credentials to access the network share, then the share mounts and I access the files on it.
    Starting yesterday I no longer get the prompt asking me to provide the domain, username and password, it just tries to connect to the server then reports the following error:
    "Could not connect to the server because the name or password is not correct."
    I've restarted my Mac but still does the same thing. I'm able to connect to other server shares just fine, prompts me for the username and password, but this one particular server just will not prompt me for the username and password.
    I've done the following to try and resolve it but without any success in doing so:
    I've restarted the server
    I ran Repair Disk Permissions in Disk Utility
    Ran Keychain Access --> First Aid --> Repair
    Tried to find an entry in Keychain to remove, none listed
    Able to connect to share within Fusion running XP
    Anything I missing?

    It surely is starting to look like it's some kind of security setting on the Win-Server...something that's different from the other server you just patched.
    If you've looked at local and domain policies that do not 'require' digital signing, then I'm a a loss. (I don't have the exact settings, but it's been discussed here ad nauseum over the past two years)
    Has something to do with disabling digital signing of communications "always", and enabling "when possible"... other than that, I've forgotten the exact policies...Look in security policies, and you'll probably see what I'm trying to describe.
    (Glad I got my daily brain-hiccup out of the way early today!)

    I haven't updated yet. Apple's download servers have been too busy. Did you know you can update via wifi instead of connection to your computer?

  • Cannot connect to Mavericks server via AFP

    Yesterday we had our server rebuilt. I have added a couple of users and a group with read/write access.
    I can only connect to volumes via SMB://10.XXX.XXX.XX
    When I try AFP://10.XXX.XXX.XX
    I get the following error:
    ‘There was a problem connecting to the
    server "10.108.172.134".
    Check the server name or IP address, and then try
    again. If you contintJe to have problems. contact your
    system administrator.'
    With SMB connection I am getting errors trying to copy files to the server.
    The error is:
    ‘The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “e.g File” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)’
    Any ideas guys?
    I can’t get hold of our IT guy today.

    I am facing the same issue and I am using Oracle system user credentials to connect Oracle server and I have also installed extension pack for the SQL Server instance which i am using for migration. Still I am getting the following error in last step (Migrate
    data).
    Cannot connect to Oracle server via SQL Server tester extensions.
    Oracle
    10.2.0.4 verion
    SQL Server 2012 SP1
    SSMA 6.0
    Please help me if you have gone through the same problem.

  • Connecting to SMB server

    Hi, Im running 10.4.8 trying to connect to a server using the Go>connect to server thing. Ive typed in the server nname and protocol correctly which is smb:\\192.xxx.xxx.xxx and the machine tries to connect. Except it THEN puts AFP:\\ in front of what Ive typed in so you get AFP:\\SMB:\\192. etc which is not going to work obviously.
    How do I stop it doing this. I can connect just using AFP no problem, but I am then restricted to short file names etc.

    I can connect to a local server using SMB, but I am not sure why! Two things to try:
    use / instead of \
    make sure the SMB port (TCP 445) is open

  • I updated to mountain lion and now mail cannot connect to my server

    I updated to mountain lion and now mail cannot connect to my server.  It says check your user name and password are correct.  Well they are, and were.  Nothing has changed except the mac OS. 
    Has anyone else suffered this and knows a way around it?  Too annoying to log into my mail every 15mins via a web page anymore.
    Efforts tried to resolve this so far:
    retyped user name and password, removed account and created a new account, restarted computer, software update, searched forums.  so far all have proved unsuccessful.
    I have also written to my mail provider and am waiting for feed back from them, but if anyone has any advice it would be gratefully received.

    Many users upgrading to Mountain Lion have run into this problem, myself included.  You likely have corrupted settings for your  "Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)" for each of the failed Accounts.  Open Mail>go to Mail's Preferences>Accounts>select an Account in the left column to work on>then set up your Outgoing Mail Server which will INCLUDE resetting up your Password, as its asking you to.  Click on "SMTP Outgoing Mail Server" near the bottom of the Accounts window while your mail account is highlighted in the left hand column.  When you click on SMTP... you will see a drop down box icon offered at the right side of the line.  Click it and then select at the bottom of the the list "Edit SMTP Mail Server".  Fill in the required settings for your ISP mail account using their recommended settings.
