Cannot copy files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1

I'm having an issue copying files from my work Mac to my PowerBook at home using ARD 3.1. Both machines are running OS 10.4.10 and have all of the available updates have been applied. When I connect to the Mac at work using ARD, I can see everything without any problems. However, when I attempt to copy a file onto my PowerBook desktop, I lose my connection to it and ARD tries to re-establish a connection and just keep looping. I'm stumped as to why this keeps happening. When I try the above from work using my PowerBook, there are no problems. Could this problem be related to my DSL Carrier (Verizon). Anyone have any ideas? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Jeff thanks for that, the only problem is I cant update any of the system software at work
And I cant just copy the folders over and use my iPod as a hard drive to take them home and put them on my iTunes as the file names on some tracks are to long

Hi All, I received this error while I was installing the last CPU on a 10.2.0.4 Oracle Instance running on a HP-UX Itanium System:
    Patch 8568398:
Copy Action: Desctination File "/u02/app/oracle/product/10.2/Db_1/lib/libjox10.so" is not writeable.

I checked metalink' site with no similar results found.
    Could anybody help me?
Should I run /usr/sbin/slibclean and remove the last patch (Patch 8568398) and then try again?

You were right. It was a permissions issue:
    hostname:/root# ls -ltr /u02/app/oracle/product/10.2/Db_1/lib/libjox10.so
    -r-xr-xr-x 1 ora10g oinstall 20041728 Apr 23 2008 /u02/app/oracle/product/10.2/Db_1/lib/libjox10.so
    Thanks.

"is not writeable." means one of two things.
    1. It does not exist.
    2. Permissions are not set correctly.
Determining which it is ... that is the first step.

Use the Migration Assistant, or the Setup Assistant, or use a network, Target Disk mode, or an external drive to move them manually.

  • Cannot copy files from CD or DVD using Finder.

    Hi,
I cannot copy files and folders from a CD or DVD to my home folder or any folder therein using Finder. I just get the "Not Permitted" symbol next to the mouse pointer when I try to drag a folder out of the CD (or DVD) to my home folder.
I have checked that I have sufficient permissions to perform this operation and when I copy files from the CD or DVD using the command line, it works without any hassles.
This is extremely strange and I cannot think of why it should happen.
A solution would be most welcome as I would prefer not to have to drop into a command line when I have to copy files from CDs or DVDs.
    Regards,

    Apple iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

I am experiencing the same problem: after undoing a copy in the Finder from my CD-drive to my Seagate 200GB FW-drive, I am no longer able to copy single files in the Finder from other drives than my harddisk. I can copy from my hard disk to my external harddisk, I can move and copy files within the harddisk, but I cannot copy from my external hard drive or my CD/DVD-drive to my harddisk or from my CD/DVD-drive to my external hard drive or the internal harddisk.
What is increasingly weird, is that I can easily copy two or more files using drag and drop! I also get a nice green + sometimes when trying to move the files, but there is just no response.
    I have tried the following:
    0) rebooted.
    1) rm com.apple.finder.plist + killall -9 Finder
    2) done that in the finder using cmd-alt-esc to kill the finder.
    3) removed cache files using Yasu from http://jimmitchelldesigns.com/yasu.html, including rebooting
    4) Doublechecked permissions, including locked bits
    5) run periodic everything from the Terminal
    6) repaired permissions
    7) checked the hard disk using disk utility
    8) Logged in as another admin user to no avail.
I can use the Terminal to copy the files without any problems, and I can open files in other applications and save them where ever from there, but the Finder refuses to let me.
May Gods wrath kill the Finder for good! I certainly hope 10.5 will show a new Finder!

  • Cannot copy files from my network using finder

If I try to copy files from my NAS or my PC to my Macmini running Leopard, I cannot copy files that are larger than 64kb. Otherwise I get an error message. Interestingly, if I use the cp command in the console instead, he can copy the file, but the file is corrupt in the sense that it is smaller than the original and not working. Weirdest thing is that I can access the same files from itunes or iphoto or vlc or whatever. Any ideas?

After the update I cannot connect to my router anymore

  • I cannot copy files from CD's and DVD's to the hard drive

I am running a G5 with OS X 10.4.8. I cannor copy files from the CD's and DVD's in the DVD-ROM drive to the hard drive. However, I can copy files from the USB floppy drive to the hard drive with no problem. What happened? Is this just a glitch? Will the problem be fixed if I just restart my computer?

I just formatted my G5 tower, installed the 10.4.8 combo updater, and now my DVD drive will not let me copy files from a CD or DVD to my computer. I can read the files for the disk, I can choose "archive" and get them onto my computer that way (very time consuming - I have to copy ALL of my files back onto my HD), and I can burn disks. All I cannot do is drag files from the disks to my HD. When I try, I get a grey circle with a line through it, not the green + I should be getting.
I have tried: updating my DVD drivers, reinstalling the system (I'm on 10.4.0 now and it still doesn't work), and clearing the PRAM.
Judging by you having the same problem, this has to do with the 10.4.8 update. %#$&!
    HELP!!!

  • Cannot copy file (From external HD, DVD, server) - iTunes 6

Yesterday I've updated iTune to 6 and de facto Quicktime to 7.0.3.
Just after this upgrade, I remark that I cannot copy files, using the finder, from external hard disk, dvd drive and network drive. During the drag, I've got the circle indicating that I can't copy.
I can copy files only from my main hard disk to this one or others.
(Note: With terminal applications I can copy theses files).
Anyone else have this problems... or a explanation/solution.
    Thanks

I reinstall iTune 6 and now everything is ok

  • I cannot copy files from Pages or Adobe Reader to or from iTunes 11

How do I copy files from iTunes to my iPad or vice versa?

    thanks
Yes, actually it does. Many people haven't yet figured out the new default interface in iTunes 11. To get to the iPad information so you can sync, click the iPad button in the header bar at the upper-right:
Or go to the View menu and select "Show Sidebar" and the interface will then look substantially like it did in earlier versions. If you don't see the menus, go to the small icon with the arrow at the extreme upper left and select "Show Menu Bar":

  • Cannot copy files from mac via smb

I have a very strange effect since I went from 10.6 to 10.7. (I am on 10.7.2 now).
My Windows 7 PC can no longer copy files via SMB from the Mac to Windows.
I first thought this has to do with McAfee Endpoint Encryption, since the error message is
"Catastrophic Failure" (nothing else) in a small popup window which says McAfee Endpoint
    Encryption in the title bar.
But then I discovered I can also not copy files to my Ubuntu system. The error message I get on
Ubuntu (11.10) is: "Operation not supported".
Both systems (the windows and the ubuntu system) however can copy via SMB from other systems
or among each other. It's actually from the Mac with which I have problems.
Nothing has changed for my Sharing Settings, but the only way currently to get files from my Mac
to the other systems is through an external harddisk, not over the network.
I see messages in other forums talking about that SMB in 10.7 is broken and Apple changed
to an unstable code base, but I can't find real helpful information on what the source of this
    problem could be.
    Any ideas?

The guy who controls the GPL licensing created a new scheme to prevent hardware manufacturers from limiting users to what the manufacturer wanted the users to be able to do (see Tivoisation). Samba, the code that Apple used for SMB took up that licensing scheme. So, Apple had to find another method in Lion.
Try turning on the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP) in your windows boxes and use that instead
I don't have much need for smb file sharing, so I don't have many details. I have seen hints that certain passwords don't work, but I don't know why.
Some useful sites for possibly finding a solution are MacWindows and MacInTouch.

  • See and copy files from a Power Mac without keyboard and monitor

A friend gave me his G4 Power Mac. I think it is a Quicksilver. (I will post some pics of both the front and back on Flickr if anyone wants to see it.) I didn't get the keyboard or monitor cuz I forgot I would need the keyboard to use Firewire Target Disc mode on it. I just need to see what files are on it (and probably copy whatever ones I need onto my newer Powerbook.)
I have a 17" Powerbook G4 DL and a Powerbook Firewire (500mhz, running OS 9.2.2), and another G4 Power Mac ADP set up to always start up in Firewire Target Mode so I can use it like an external drive (which I never do...) and a bunch of older Macs (LC 580, SE...)
How can I get onto this new machine? I need to see what files are on there. I do not have access to another monitor but I might be able to borrow a USB keyboard so I can start it up in Target Mode. Is there anything I can do before I scrounge for a USB keyboard?
I have tried connecting by Firewire and ethernet with both Powerbooks. The Power Mac isn't showing up either way. I am pretty sure it has a CD drive but pushing on the door (one of two on the front) doesn't open it up.
I am assuming the Power Mac is running OSX.
    Many thanks.
    Cheers,

I think it is a Quicksilver
It may be easier to look at the rear panel for some labeling. It may be silk-screened on with white paint and a bit hard to see.A four-digit model number with "M" as a leader will pretty much nail down the model without taking photos that may not show much.Quicksilvers can have models number M8360, M8493, or M8493 depending on the config.
For snopping the drive, it may be easier to pull the drive from the G4 and use one of these extremely handy gadgets:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Newer%20Technology/U2NV2SPATA/
to mount the bare G4 drive on your working PowerBook with OSX. It will show up on the PB as an external drive and you can see what's there. The adaptor will be serviceable for more than just checking this hard drive. Anyone with multiple Macs will get a lot of use from it.
Remember that some third-party keyboards do not recognize Mac start-up key combos, and that some current Aluminum Apple boards may not work correctly with older Macs. The Al board with numeric keypad (here) says it will work with Tiger. The wireless ones and the short "non-keypad" version require Leopard or higher.

  • Cannot copy files from Time Machine

    Hi,
I wanted to trash all my Time Machine Files yesterday but when I tried to empty the trash, my Mac started to count all the files on the trash for so long that I decided to undo that. So, I opened the trash and decided to move back again all my Time Machine back up files into the original disk where they where. My Mac started to count all the files and it did not stopped since then? What can I do to resolve this issue, since my Mac has been counting files since very late last night and it's been doing this ever since: it's been counting for at least one day?
Can I stop the process and do something else, I would not like to damage my disk or something else. I know I should have taken a «reformat» option instead but right now I do not know if I can stop this process or should I let it run for I do not know how long???
    Please help!
    Thanks
    Robert

    Hi,
After consideration of all this precious time spent, I've decided finally to call at Apple support even if my Apple Care coverage had expired for so many years. The 35$ fee for a month services was largely worth the call and the service I received... So, with the help of a well trained expert, I got the job done very fast et efficiently! Mind you, I had to insist to be in the hand of a good expert before doing anything, this was a "must" in my case...
After explaining my problem to this expert I realized that I was in good hands: he knew what was the problem and he really made my call worth all the money. I agreed to share my screen with him and we started with Terminal.
    First:
I emptied the trash by typing the proper command in Terminal. I tried it before but it wasn't working since all my backup files from Time Machine where not on my local disk, they where on another internal disk. With his help, I identified the proper disk and when Terminal executed the command, it was done in no time. Sweet, no more counting! But my files where still on the trash, no one could tell how long this would take to trash everything. I had a zillion files in my Backup from Time Machine!
    Second:
So, I asked my expert: "since we don't know how long will this process will take, will reformatting the disk, be better and will this save time? Is it possible since all my files on this disk are in the trash? He said: "Yes it will work even if your files are in the trash". Ok, let's do it! So, I've stopped the process after a few minutes and started Disk Utility. I then identified the volume and hit the "erase" button.
Voilà, the job was done perfectly after 2 minutes, my disk was clean.
    Conclusion:
Is it both actions that did the job, I cannot say. But in my case, it worked perfectly. I know, I should have reformat my disk first, it would have save me so much time.
May my mistake serve other users in the futur! If anyone would like the command codes I used in Terminal, feel free to ask.
Live long and prosper Mr. Technician!
    Robert M.

  • Cannot copy file from backup DVD to HD folder

Whenever I finish a project, I had burn the various files (movie, text, pictures, pages, etc.) onto DVDs to free up hard disk space for present projects. Usually, I would use a disk image to burn those DVDs. Recently, I needed material from those DVDs and I found that I could not copy them from the DVD to my work folders on my hard disk by dragging them from the DVD window to another open window. I could only do it the roundabout way of opening those files individually using the programmes (like pages, iPhoto, etc) and then use the 'Save As ...' option in the File Menu. It was a huge hassle. I then looked into my other DVDs and found that they were the same way. I find DVDs easier to manage. Is it because I am using disk images or is there something wrong in the way I burn the DVDs. Please advise

When I try to move the files from the Finder Window with the files on the DVD, I do not get the plus sign when I try to drag it to the desktop or any other window. Even when I try with the option key pressed, there is no plus sign with the mouse arrow. Someone suggested to use the terminal and I did. It was a hassle, though.

  • Cannot copy file from desktop to media card

Whenever I try to copy a file from my desktop to my media card I get an error. When I use the desktop manager software I get the message 'one or more files cannot be copied: FILE_NAME'. When I use Windows Explorer to try the same thing I get the message 'Cannot copy FILE_NAME: parameter is incorrect'.
I do have a proper connection from the desktop to the blackberry because I can open files on the media card and update them. I just have the problem copying the files.
I have been able to copy the files from the desktop to the device memory. Then move it from the device memory to the media card. But there should be no difference between the device memory and the media card.
Note: The file I am trying to copy is a data file (.PDF). While I was having the same problem with music files, I found if I went into advanced parameters from desktop manager and specified the audio file type & bitrate I was able to copy the music file without errors.
    I have a blackberry curve 8300
    16GB media card

When I try to move the files from the Finder Window with the files on the DVD, I do not get the plus sign when I try to drag it to the desktop or any other window. Even when I try with the option key pressed, there is no plus sign with the mouse arrow. Someone suggested to use the terminal and I did. It was a hassle, though.

  • I cannot copy files from Macbook to Iomega hard drive

I wanted to use my Iomega hard drive on my macbook for the first time but I cannot copy any files.
Can anybody provide me with the steps I have to do to configure the Iomega (formerly used on a PC)
    for the Macbook?
    Thanks

If you want to use the drive exclusively on your Mac - and not a Mac and PC - open Disk Utility (Applications>Utilities folder), click on the drive to be erase, and format it as "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" with a single GUID partition and give it a new name. It should only take a minute or so (depending on the size of the drive) to format.
Call back if you have any problems.

  • Cannot copy files from external hard disks

This is happening often enough to be really painful:
I insert a hard disk. I browse the files on it. I open a new window of Finder and drag some files from the external hard disk into my own machine (OSX Leopard 10.5.5). It croaks, telling me some "permissions" are wrong (Error -36).
Browsing Google and Macosxhints and all of that, the suggestions indicate that I should "repair permissions", "repair disk", and reboot. All done. Still doesnt work.
What now? I never had this problem with Windows. What's with this permissions drivel on OSX and how can I fix it once and for all? I only use my machine to browse on Firefox/Safari, talk with Skype, edit with Coda/Transmit, and then Office documents. Which of these tools changes these mysterious permissions so that I have to keep "repairing" again and again???
Thanks for any pointers or advice!

I am on shaky ground here because I am totally ignorant about about Windoze and MS-DOS. What I can tell you, though, is that the Unix underpinning of Mac OS X is heavily reliant on the concept of "ownership" which, apart from other factors, has security implications. FAT32 has absolutely no concept of file ownership. (That's why Microsoft encourages everyone to use NTFS instead - mainly for the security implications).
You need advice - Sorry! - from someone more knowledgeable than me as to how to change both the format (to Mac OS Extended, Journaled) and the Partition Scheme (to GUID) *+while preserving your data+*. I presume that you would need to find a temporary home for that data, after which altering the drive's structures would take only a moment - but as to how to then correctly replace the data onto that drive I would prefer not to say. I would guess that simply transferring the data back onto the drive now with a 'Mac-appropriate' structure would suffice - but PLEASE do not entrust your data to my 'guess'.
Wait patiently for someone who knows how to advise you to respond in this thread, or post again with a possibly more descriptive/pertinent title.
Sorry not to have been of any help.
    Andreas
