Cannot import as widescreen

I must be doing something wrong, but I cannot figure out what it is.
When importing 720 x 480 widescreen video (.mov files) into iMovie HD 6.0.4, it automatically converts it to 4:3 with black bars around the sides AND the top, and it distorts the picture something awful! I have tried every import setting - DV widescreen, HD 720, HD 1080, but it still imports incorrectly.
When importing the same clips into iMovie 08, they import fine as Widescreen. Also, when double clicking on the clips in Finder, they open as widescreen in Quicktime. The clips were filmed in widescreen format on my hard drive digital camcorder, and like I said, they work everywhere except in this program.
In "Preferences", the following boxes are NOT checked:
- Automatically resize window to fit project
- Automatic DV Pillarboxing & Letterboxing
Also, the Quality is set to "Highest."
I have tried changing all these settings but to no avail. Any help would be appreciated as I am working on a project that needs to be done like yesterday, and I prefer using iMovie HD for the supposed better video quality when exporting to iDVD and for the ease of marking chapters, which I understand if using iMovie 08, has to be done in Garage Band???
Thanks.

Mish,
Thank you for the workaround - when I copied the clip directly to the media folder of my iMovie project, and then opened iMovie HD, I was able to move them from the trash to my timeline and they displayed correctly as widescreen. YEY!!!! I then shared to iDVD and it worked properly. Double YEY!!!!
Incidentally, when looking in that folder I see that iMovie HD had converted the files that weren't working properly from .mov files to .dv files. I suspect that the conversion of the files corrupted the dimensions.
Using the QT inspector, here is the information it displayed:
Source: /Users/paul/Movies/iMovie Events.localized/Wedding9/clip-2008-08-25 01;03;18.mov
Format: Apple MPEG-2 SD Camcorder Video, 720 x 480 (853 x 480), Millions
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Left, 48.000 kHz
16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Right, 48.000 kHz
FPS: 29.97
Playing FPS: 30
Data Size: 25.01 MB
Data Rate: 10.23 mbits/s
Normal Size: 853 x 480 pixels
Current Size: 853 x 480 pixels (Actual)
It is interesting that the actual size is 853 x 480, rather than the 720 x 480 that I thought it was.
But as John Cogdell said, "But clearly, something is causing the problem!" Seems like there may be a compatibility issue or a bug in iMovie HD that causes this to happen not only to me, but to other folks. I found about 5 posts last night of others with the same problem (luckily, I was the first to get and answer that works!!!) Thanks John for researching this, too.
Great answer - thanks for taking the time to help me out!!!

You need to transfer the iTunes Library from the most recent backup you made before the hard drive was replaced.
You can't transfer the full iTunes Library from the iPad back to iTunes.
There are third-party Windows applications that will transfer data from an iOS device, but they don't re-create the iTunes Library exactly as it was before.

The vCard must not be a compatible format.  (Unfortunately, there are multiple formats.)
Often your carrier can transfer contacts between devices from different manufacturers.  Try visiting your carrier's retail outlet and see if they can do this for you.

  • I have upgraded to Mavericks and I now cannot import DV into FCP through the capture presets.

Since upgrading to Mavericks, I cannot import DV vision through my Sony FX-1E. I have tried various connections - DV to Firewire 400 + 800 with no success. I now have to get the vision ingested at another facility and exported to a hard drive in order to edit.
Is there a way I can get vision into FCP?

FCP (not FCPX) is legacy software, now EOL and not designed or guaranteed to work with Mavericks, some people report no problems others do, it depends on your setup. I'd suggest using iMovie to capture your footage then transfer to FCP to save using (or paying) another facility. An alternative (and my own solution) is a second boot drive with 10.8.5 and FCP 7 which still works OK.

  • I've just upgraded to Iphoto v9.4.1 and cannot import photos from my hard drive

I've just upgraded to Iphoto v9.4.1 and cannot import photos from my hard drive. no matter what method I use, either click and drag or through the File menu. All I get is a message 'Preparing to import' - file size is less than 300 kb

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

  • Is it really true that Final Cut Express cannot import full HD footage?

I have seen a comment on the Apple store website for Final Cut Express saying that FCE cannot import 1940 1080/ 60i/24p/30p frame rates, converting them to a degraded 1440 1080 14p instead!
I have bought a Canon HF100 on Ebay, and it is shipping from Canada to Britain by surface mail, so I have a few weeks to sort out my editing software. I was planning to buy FCE, but when I saw that comment I was surprised to think Apple haven't got a leading edge program for editing HD footage, which is the coming thing. I have trawled through all the posts in this forum, but with my head spinning I am still not sure what FCE can do.
So in desperation I am asking for a simple answer from someone: can I import the best quality footage I will shoot on this camera and retain that quality in FCE, or do I have to look for another program? And what would that program be? Please help me!

Hi Ian, thanks for getting involved with my potential fiasco to help me out! I have just been on ebay and saw a british person selling a vixia camera, so I messaged him to ask about this issue, and this is what he has replied:
"A good question! You are quite right, UK frame rates are 25p and 50i. This used to be an issue with analogue cameras with NTSC vs PAL, but with HD, it is no detriment at all, in fact it is an advantage. Firstly, it means you get more frames per second, so you get less blurring with fast moving objects and have more raw material to work with; secondly, HD TV's will automatically recognise the format and play the footage with no issue; finally, if you do need to output at 25p or 50i, any decent editing package will convert the frame rate. A quick bit of maths shows that a long GOP under 25/50 is 0.6s long, whereas under 30/60, it is only 0.5s. I import the clips into the PC, edit them, render into a single file, then use Nero 9 (the only software currently able to do this) to create an AVCHD folder back on the camera, so that the finished film can be played out in glorious full HD using the HDMI port. Hope this helps! "
I'm not really clear on what he is saying with regards to showing the footage... can only play it via the camera? Means cannot burn DVD? Uploading to Facebook not an issue?
He says editing software can convert the frame rate, so can that be done in FCE? What do you say, Tom?

  • Importing DV Widescreen from Sony HD Camcorder doesn't work

I bought iLife 06 yesterday. Today I started a new iMovie project and specified it was to be in DV Widescreen PAL. When I connected the camcorder (a Sony HDR-HC1E - the very same as the one that Steve Jobs used to demonstrate iMovie 06 at Macworld) it refused to import in widescreen and instead imported in normal (narrowscreen) DV. Consequently the picture is of course all squashed up. This process worked impeccably in the previous version of iMovie with the same camcorder.
When I spoke to Apple Care, after considerable research they said that this was an incompatibility problem. The camera is incompatible with iMovie 06. (I wonder how this can be when it was compatible with the previous iMovie AND is being demonstrated by Jobs himself.)
I should make clear that although the camcorder is HD-capable, I was actually recording in DV Widescreen (because the resulting file would otherwise be too big to put onto a DVD.)
I find it astonishing that Apple can release an upgrade which does not have the ability to do what its previous version did. Apple Care's advice was to uninstall iMovie 06, revert to the previous version and hope that an upgrade to iMovie 06 "might" solve the problem. What kind of help is this?

Well, I'm here in the US, using the NTSC version of the HC1. I don't have the problem you describe, in iMovie 5 or 6. But the settings on the camera are quite complex, so it could be a setting was wrong when you recorded, or when you capturing into iMovie. Using the english menus, you need to go like this on the camera, while in camera mode:
    P-Menu > Menu > Standard Set > DV Set > Wide Select
and make sure that's in 16:9 before you start taping anything.
Then to get it into iMovie, you have to force the iLink port to DV quality.
    P-Menu > Menu > Standard Set > VCR HDV/DV
    and chose DV.
I am able to capture 4:3 and 16:9 clips into either DV or DV Widescreen projects, and iMovie 6 correctly letterboxes/pillarboxes as needed.
You are using a "DV Widescreen" project, right?

If they are the same nef files that you were importing into your PC, see if the reason is an error message like the thread above this one. Permissions issue.
