Cannot import from Canon Digital Camera

I've recently bought a Canon SX20IS and it has HD video recording capability.
I've recorded several videos and I cannot import the videos. I've tried importing it manually (from wherever I've saved it, be it: iPhoto, my documents, etc). The videos are saved as .mov files and can play easily in Quicktime. They also save into the iPhoto library easily enough.
iMovie begins to imports. Starting (everytime) importing fast, 3 minutes...2 minutes... then it slows down when it reaches the 1/4 done mark and starts going up (i.e.) 3 minutes... 4 minutes... 7 minutes...30 minutes... 47 minutes... about an hour... 2 hours... and I've left in on several occasions for more than an hour and yet it's still in the same place. When I force quit the application, there seems to be no "not responding" message correlating to iMovie. So I do not understand why it can't import it.
An example of what I've been trying to import is a 2minute 45 second long clip, 485.3MB
PLEASE help, it's driving me INSANE!

I was directly connecting the camera via cable. My work around was to download with Canon Utilities, then I imported the RAW files from the hard disk into AP. Temporary solution as best!
I don't believe this to be a "temporary solution" at all. I do this routinely, except that I use Bridge for doing the download/import. I then import the files to Aperture. The up side, in my mind, is that I now have 2 copies of each image, in two different places and I always know where the original is.
Come on APPLE!
I think there are lots of other issues Apple could improve. For instance, making it easy to re-save an image once edited in Photoshop back to Aperture.

  • Does "RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded" MATTER??

Need to buy new camera to use with my G5 and iPHoto 5. I desire (1) affordability, (2) more optical zoom than what I've had in past (want to move from 4x to 6x), and (3) compatible with my G5.
I've had 2 canon powershost (my last, the 570, but a kid dropped it). Easy to use. So maybe simliar, or something nicer.
Been studying the Canon web site about their various cameras. For the above reasons I like thePowerShot SX100 IS, about $240. 6x optical zoom.
HOWEVER, in the MAC OSX compatibility section at Canon it has this quote:
    * Mac OS X 10.1 and newer come with Image Capture drivers that support most of Canon's digital cameras with USB interfaces. When a compatible camera is connected to a compatible Mac computer running OS X 10.1 and newer, the computer detects the camera and automatically launches Image Capture. This Apple program allows JPEG images in the camera to be downloaded to the Macintosh. NOTE: RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded in OS X via Image Capture. We suggest the use of File Viewer Utility or an external card reader. Also, movie files shot with PowerShot cameras cannot be downloaded in OS X via Image Capture or iPhoto. We suggest the use of ImageBrowser or an external card reader.
Additionally, Image Capture can access JPEG images directly from a CompactFlash card using an OS X-compatible card reader or using a PC Card Adapter in the PC Card slot of an Apple PowerBook.**
This line caught me confused: *RAW files from Canon digital cameras cannot be downloaded*
In the past, I just plugged in the Canon Camera, and iPhoto 5 opened, and I h appily downloaded the picts and off and away I was.
Will this still happen??? And if I'm not getting the "RAW" picts (whatever that is), but just the JPEGS I'm used to, am I not getting "all" the picts, or the best that my camera could be given me for eventually printing?
    Am I worrying about nothing?
Finally, any camera suggestions? Under $300 , super picts, 5-10x zoom, and friendly with my Mac
    Thanks
    JON

You know, because you ask the question, I'll guess that it won't really matter to you...
Every camera shoots RAW - that's the total information that the sensor on the camera sees, but mid- and lower end cameras process this RAW data into an easy to use format such as jpegs.
Many (but not all) Pros demand that the camera provide all the data to the computer, so that the photographer can process the images him/her self. For most casual and family users this is not an issue. For the serious hobbyist and the Pro it might well be.
For more on Raw have a look at this:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rawimageformat
Btw, later versions of iPhoto do work with Some Raw formats.
    As to cameras:
I used a Canon S2 IS for a couple of years and found it really good. There's and S3 and an S5 now too. Currently I'm using a Panasonic FZ8. I really like it.

  • While importing from my digital camera (Olympus XZ-2), iMovies quits, WHile importgin from my digital camera (Olympus XZ-2), iMovies quits

While importing from my digital camera (Olympus XZ-2), it "unexpectedly quits" - seems to happen on slightly larger clips (over 90 seconds) - not sure if it is related to the model camera or iMovie 11'. Any advice?

Lion is 10.7, Snow Lepoard is 10.6, Leopard is 10.5.
I woul strongly recomend you update to 10.6.8 (the last snow lepoard update) for a number of reasons. First 10.6.8. is a solid OS at this point you won't have to many (or any) gotcha's. Second Leopard (10.5.x) is going away. Pretty sure there will be no more updates for it at this point. If not it won't be long before that happens. Also you will need to have 10.6.8 installed in the event you want to at some point upgrade to Lion.
But finally perhaps the most important point if you don't have 10.6.8 you can't acess the App Store and if you can;t acess the App Store you will need to get the boxed version of Aperture 3. The differerence in price between the boxed version and the App Store version will more then pay for the upgrade to Snow Leopard. In fact you should have  a fair bit of change left over.
    good luck

  • Cant find the pictures I imported from my digital camera using iphoto

    Hi,
I have a macbook pro and imported part of some photos from my digital camera using Iphoto. When it prompted me whether the photos should be deleted from the camera, I chose 'yes'. It deleted the pictures from the camera, but I cant find them anywhere on iphotos. I have tried searching for the pics on my mac using the 'finder', but had no luck.
I repeated the same thing.. took some more pictures and tried to import part of them and then delete the same pics from the camera. Iphotos did the same thing..
I usually import all (and not part) of the pictures from my camera and then use the same option to delete the pictures from the camera after importing them to iphotos. This has always worked.
    Please help. Thanks,
    Kanchan

In the Event mode make sure the sort order is By Date ➙ Descending.  That will put the newer Events at the top of the window.  Check there to see if they are there or not.
The safest method to get photos from a camera to the library is to upload them to a folder on the Desktop first.  That makes sure they are safely on the hard drive.  From there you can import the folder into the library and when you've confirmed they are in the library you can delete the folder from the Desktop and have the camera reformat the memory card.

  • Images imported from a digital camera were viewable and editable at first but later disappeared! They cannot be re-imported from either the camera or the iCloud as iPhoto indicates that they already exist, but cannot locate them. Please help!

On holiday I have been uploading my photos to iphoto on my macbook pro every few days, the latest batch appeared and I was able to edit them, flag, merge events etc. However, later that day when I went back to the images they could not be found in my library. They had been removed from 'latest import', however were viewable on the icloud photo stream. I have attempted to re-import the images from both the digital camera and my photostream but iphoto indicates that the images had already been imported and would not import them again. I was able to locate the master images using finder, but Iphoto tells me that these files are unreadable (they are .jpg) when I try to re-add them this way. I have also tried to 'unhide' all images in case I had accidentally hidden them but this didn't work either.
    Any other suggestions?

a best practice to is to never have any computer program (including iPhoto) delete the photos from the card but to import the photos and keep them and then after at least one successful backup cycle has completed and then reformat the card --  I use three very large (32 GB) cards in rotation so I do not reformat for typically a year or more giving me one more long term backup of my photos
Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - rebuild your iPhoto library database

  • Photo Importing from my digital camera

First off, I LOVE MY MACBOOK - haven't had the mooing and other problems - but I do have a concern - when I download photos from my Canon SuperShot Camera - the MacBook is greatly reducing the size once imported - making it hard to use the photos for picture books, photos, etc. How can I adjust the resolution to a larger photo import?

Are you using iPhoto to import your photo's?
I find it easier to do a manual download from the camera. All I do is plug my camera in and it shows up as a "drive" on my desktop. Click on that and all your camera's folders are in there.
You can directly export the whole folder to your desktop. When you do this ALL the original data is placed on your desktop. This will fix any problem you seem to be having with automatic downsizing.

  • Cannot import from Canon Powershot pro1

I've always imported my photos with iPhoto simply connecting my Canon Powershot Pro1 to the Mac with a USB cable.
About an year ago I started to have problems: I had to shut down the Mac, connect the camera and then start the Mac again. Connecting the camera to a "turned on" Mac didn't work: I could only see the thumbnails but after clicking "Import all" I got an error message.
Now, switching from iPhoto to Photos, this trick doesn't work anymore and there's no way to import the photos. When the camera is connected, the thumbnails appear successfully in Photo, but I'm unable to complete the import as the following error always occurs:

  • How can I view and choose photos before importing from a digital camera?

    Hey,
I am using a Canon PowerShot A40 and I want to be able to (after I connect the camera and open iPhoto of course) view the pictures on the camera in iPhoto and choose individual images to import. I have 560 images, but I only want to import 3 (groan) and there seems to be no way to preview the pics before importing. So now I am importing 557 useless pics that I already have in my library just to get 3 more pictures! There has got to be a way to preview! C'mon Apple...
Anyway, someone please help me with this.
    Cheers,
    Josh

Oh, thanks Dave. I did not think Image Capture had even a useful function. heh.
Well, I used the "coffee" method (actually it was tea) and just deleted what photos I did not need afterward. It worked out, but I will use Image Capture next time.
No offence to Apple, but why the heck has Apple not included such a feature in iPhoto? I mean that is just common sense to include previews before you import God knows what, unless it takes a lot of work to make that happen for iPhoto. Windows makes it simple to preview and view images. O well, I am sure Apple will get it done eventually, but I shouldn't have to wait for iLife '08!
    Cheers,
    Josh

Check the box at 'Constrain' and select '6 x 4'
    Crop.

  • I cannot download photos from my digital camera to Iphoto (version '09). I have been able to successfully do this up to 4 days ago but not yesterday. My camera/device is recognized in the Source List but photos won't download for me to import to library.

I cannot download photos from my digital camera (via a cable) to Iphoto (version '09). I have been able to do this successfully up til 4 days ago but not yesterday (Dec. 25th). My camera/device is recognized in the Source List, but when it tries to download the photos, all I get are the words "Loading Photos" in the area where the thumbnail pictures usually display. The little "gear" symbol next to the words but it just goes round and round. Nothing ever downloads, and instead of showing me how many pictures there are to import it just says "No photos". So therefore I cannot import the photos to my library since they won't even download.
I was getting an error message a few days ago that my Iphoto library was getting full, so I emptied my trash in both Iphoto and on my computer. I had this same problem back in October and emptying the trash and getting rid of some photos did help (can I really be using that much storage space for the pictures?). But it didn't help this time.
Any suggestions as to what to do to solve the problem? I would try taking the SD card out and inserting that into the slot on the computer to see if I could load pictures that way; but the last time I did that, they wouldn't load. Not sure if I lost pics from the disc or not.
    Thank you,
    Novice50

    1. You did not get an error message telling you that your iPhoto library was getting full. You got a message telling you that your HD was getting full, right?
OS X needs about 10 gigs of hard drive space for normal OS operations - things like virtual memory, temporary files and so on.
Without this space your Mac will slow down as the OS hunts for space on the disk, files will be fragmented, also slowing things down, apps will crash and the risk of data corruption - that is damage to your files, photos, music - increases exponentially.
Your first priority is to make more space on that HD. Nothing else can be done until you do.
Purchase an external HD and move your Photos and Music to it. Both iPhoto and iTunes can run perfectly well with the Library on an external disk.
Your Library has been damaged from being run on an overfull disk.
How much free space on it now?

  • IPhoto: Pictures will not open/cannot import from Digital Camera

    hey guys!
I'm just recently having problems with iPhoto. I can open pictures on my iMac when clicking on them through folders itself, but when I go into iPhoto and try to double-click on the thumbnail images which show up to make them full size, they do not open..the wheel just spins to show its loading but the pictures do not load.
Also, when i click IMPORT to import pictures from my digital camera, the wheel also just spins and it does nothing again, and says it couldnt import the pictures as they are an unrecognized file, which is weird as this had all worked before.
    thanks!

  • TS1315 when trying to download photos  from my digital cameras I keep getting the message that pics can't be downloaded because of an unrecognizable format. It shows that they are all jpeg files. One camera is a Canon, the other a Panasonic.

when trying to download photos  from my digital cameras I keep getting the message that pics can't be downloaded because of an "unrecognizable format". It shows that they are all jpeg files. One camera is a Canon, the other a Panasonic. I have had these cameras for a few years and have never had a problem downloading.

I am having the same problem which has happened very infrequently before. Generally it's one photo and happened when my battery died.
However today I tried to download six photos.
None would download including several others for a total of 21 that would not download.
Since I had just installed a new powered hub and added three new external 4T hard drives, I got concerned that it was the hub. Then got really worried that I'd have problems with the data I have been backing up.
However following this sequence of events, I've determined it's not the hub, but still don't know what is causing the problem.
    (1) Put a fresh battery in the camera - same results
(1.5) Used a different port in the new hub - same results
    (2) Put the card in the card slot in the back of my iMac - no problems except that one image I knew about last week. The six new images imported.
    (3) Tried again using the cable - still same error
    (4) Changed cables - my husband has the same camera - still same error
    (4) Put the card in his camera with his cable - still same error
    (5) Put the card in a card reader and used the same slot in the new hub - no problems - same one wouldn't import but message that there are no new photos to import.
    (6) Moved the offending one image to the Trash while the card was in the card reader
    (7) Put the card back into my camera and used my cable. iPhoto had no error and displayed the message there are no new photos.
    Conclusion:
    Not the camera
    Not the cable
    Not the hub
Must remove bad photo from the card
However, I have not had to do that before. I went through several imports on vacation when there was one bad image and just ignored it each time.
Any idea why this is happening now?
    Thank you

  • When I import photos from my digital camera in iPhoto 7.1.5 all i get is empty squares. Used to work great

Just recently, I went to import some photos from my digital camera into my iPhoto 7.1.5 version on my Mac. All I am getsting is the amount of pictures on the camera in the shape of blank picture holders on the screen.  I hooked up the same camera to our son's mac and it has no problem importing pictures. I had some on a USB stick and am having the same problem.

    As a Test:
Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'
Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

I have the same problem and apple needs to fix this - but in the mean time you can manually select the vertical photos then "import - import selected" and you can get your verticals. We need a better fix. THIS IS A BUG!
