Cannot move mail to IMAP folder

At some point recently after a Mail.app update, the following has changed:
I can no longer move messages into my ISPs IMAP folder. Mail.app gives me a dialog saying: The destination mailbox "<name>" does not allow messages to be moved to it.
The ISP says this is not true, and Windows and UNIX clients can move messages into the mailbox just fine.
Only Mail.app cannot.
This seems possibly related to another post I made about recent IMAP/Mail.app issues.
Ideas appreciated.

Mail.app and Dovecot IMAP server... for some reason the combination ended up leaving a process running that locked the mailbox permanently.
This issue seems to be fixed on the server and Mail.app is happy now.
No idea why it happened on the day Mail.app got updated.

  • Is there a way to automatically move mail from one folder to another?

Is there a way to periodically, automatically, move mail from one folder to another?
For example, I'd like to move mail from one of my IMAP/Archives folders to my MyMac/Archive folder and I'd like this to happen without intervention.
    Can this be done?

I'll try to be more specific.
When I'm done with an email, I archive it.
Because I have multiple email accounts, this results in emails in multiple Archive folders (one per account).
I'd like to have these automatically all moved into one (on my Mac).

  • Cannot move mail to the mail trash

I cannot move mail to the mail trash without a message that says:  65530.emix couldn't be copied to 'messages'because an item with the same name already exists.  The mail is transferred to the trash but still remains in the inbox.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Intermittent "Cannot move Mail to mailbox" Errors.

Has anyone else experienced intermittent "Cannot move Mail to mailbox" error messages?
I've done everything I can think of to track this problem down: packet sniffing, reviewing the IIS logs, looking at the event viewer to see if anything is dieing around the time of the request, switching from AT&T Edge (3G isn't reliable here) to WI-FI and back again, etc.
I have noticed while packet sniffing that when the error occurs there is a [RST, ACK] returned instead of [FIN, ACK].
This is an intermittent problem that has been plaguing us for a few weeks now.
Our setup includes: windows server 2008, IIS 7, and exchange 2007 with all patches and roll-ups applied.
Thanks in advance, and any advice is appreciated.

What argues FOR a server problem is that millions of users don't have the problem. I see it occasionally when the cell signal is very weak.
I had a problem a couple of months ago where the push stopped working. My SA looked at it and fixed it. This is not the same problem you have, but it could be related. Here is his explanation:
+We ran windows updates on Promail a weekend or so before this problem on the 28th. One of the updates was a DNS fix that expanded the dynamic port range dns is using. Problem was, in it’s infinite wisdom, MS allowed this range change to include 2883, the AUTD or active sync port. So we had to do a registry change to exclude the port for Active sync only. Here’s the KB article:+
    +http://support.microsoft.com/kb/956189+
+Jason said that he recalled making this change before. But the updates on the weekend, must have reverted the registry change he did because the exception wasn’t there anymore.+

  • Why can't I delete mail or move mail to a folder. This started after mail host microsoft update to their exchange server

We recently moved our mail from an in-house server to an outside hosting service. It was working well until we returned after Christmas. The mail host explained that they had received a Microsoft update to their hosting servers. Now we get an "ERROR 12" code and cannot delete mail or move mail on any of the IMAP folders. I tested the theory on Outlook and the mail deleted fine and was able to move to folders and it synchronized without issue. How can we fix this on Thunderbird?

Outlook connects to the server using emapi Thunderbird uses imap. So a comparison is nothing more than a waste, or did you explicitly set up an imap account in Outlook?
Please create an IMAP log https://wiki.mozilla.org/MailNews:Logging
I did find an [https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=741374 old bug] that indicates fasthost had incorrectly configured servers (is that your provider?) with a workaround.
It is difficult to diagnose exchange imap issues because they do not use any of the standard error codes or messages. But a log should at least provide information on the command the server does not like and that makes a good starting point.

  • Why does email have cannot move mail?

My IPhone occassionally will not allow me to delete email and shows a message that I cannot move the mail (to trash). The settings seem the same on my IPad which works fine and I can delete from my computer, but not the IPhone. This is frequent and annoying.

What did your email provider say when you contacted them about their server issue?

  • I cannot move mail to folders, even ones created with icloud

I tried the usual drag and drop. It looks like mail is cooperating. It shows mail moving as I drag it. But when I open that folder/mailbox (on icloud) message is not there.
I tried using the menu: highlight message, select move to, select mailbox/folder, click.  Nothing happens.

here the same: the mails are moved but after revisiting the folder they are in their old place. Problem is only with mail.app, in iPhone Mail there´s no problem.

Did you change the Incoming server to...
    Incoming Mail Server: imap.telus.net
    Instead of the old...
    Incoming Mail Server: pop.telus.net
Is there 2 entries for telus incoming server?
    The receiving email ports are:
    IMAP is port 143
    IMAP-SSL is port 993
    POP is port 110
    POP-SSL is port 995

  • Cannot move mail to mailbox on my computer

Suddenly my Mail program will not move messages from the institutional server I use to my own "On My Mac" folder. The message I receive is "304 messages could not be moved to the mailbox “Incoming mail 2006 — On My Mac”. This does not vary no matter the number of messages, or to which mailbox on my computer, old or newly created.
I cannot find any answer to this in "Mail Help." Any suggestions welcome.

Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move the “IMAP-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.

  • Nokia E72 - Cannot move mail from local "sent" fol...

    I've recently received my E72.
The built-in mail application is missing one major function: It cannot automatically place sent mail in the "sent" folder on the IMAP-server, only in the LOCAL sent folder. Absolutely no options for changing this exists. If I try to move a message (Actions -> Move message) from the local sent folder to the IMAP sent folder, all I get in the maplisting for the destination folder is "(no data)". If I try to move a message from the inbox, I can see the full IMAP map listing, and move the message anywhere without a problem.
The only workaround is putting the sending account as bcc, and then move the message afterwards from the inbox to the IMAP sent folder. This is a really big hassle when you send a lot of mails.
I've tried to upgrade the phone software, remove the account and recreate it, rebooted the phone a million times, reset the phone to factory settings, tried with other IMAP accounts, and so on.
This is seriously annoying. The whole point of IMAP is to synchronize everything with the server. Please Nokia, can someone fix this?
    Regards,
    Mogu

that's what I meant: the server's sent folder is correctly subscribed? You can see it among  the "other folders" of your account? When you enter your account , on top left of the windows you'd see a little window as default with  "inbox" selected. If you explode it by clicking, you'd see the  "other folders" choice, clicking on it you should explode all the subscribed servers, and amond them the "sent" server's folder? That should be the clue that it has been correctly subscribed and , hence, you'd see it as a destination folder too when copyng/moving your messages..
If you don't seei it, you have not subscribed the folder and it's normal you don't see it when chosing where to move messages either
If you see it among the subscribed folders, instead, but not in the "move  to" as a choice well...it's a bug...and couldn't suggest anything.

  • Cannot delete mail from Archive Folder

I am in the porcess of tryign Mail again, and i must admitt it is a bit of a challenge.
The following problem for example seems so simple but i cannot get it to work.
I have a very large Archive folder that was created i believe from the archive folder from the icloud mail.
I have decided to caopy the Archive folder that Mail created on a seperate hard drive, to increase available storage on my system disk.
Now i want to delete the messages in the Archive folder, but when i select all the messages and then select Delete the messages are cleared from the Archive folder and all seems fine, however within  minutes they are back in the Archive folder, what am i doing wrong?
    thx
    John

Well Kelley, that photo did not come with the system so it had to come from you or someone else putting in the Shared folder.
Choose the file and "get info" (command- i) turn the dislclosure triangle on "Ownership & Permissions" make sure you can "read & write" and make yourself the "owner"(open the lock and enter your admin password).
Then check under General, turn the disclosure triangle and be sure the "locked" box in NOT checked.
    Let us know.

  • Cannot get mail via IMAP after security update 2015-002

Since installing security update 2015-002 I cannot now receive emails via IMAP on my MacBook air running Yosemite. I am told that the username or password is incorrect, but I have not changed these. The mail server is working fine and I can receive via my iPAD. I can also send from my MacBook - just receiving that fails.
Has anyone else had a problem?

  • Cannot move mail with attachments

I was helping a friend prepare to eventually delete her hotmail account from Mail on her iPad. She did not want to lose any mails, so we were moving messages from her hotmail inbox to her gmail inbox. Moving the messages was uneventful until we came to messages with attachments. Any mails with attachments will not move. When trying to do so, we get an error message that simply says the mails cannot be moved...but gave no reason why (really helpful). They're simply stuck in the hotmail Inbox and cannot be moved out. Anybody have a clue what's happening here?
In a worse case scenario I told her we could forward those messages to her new account and then just delete them from her hotmail account. By doing so we'll save the messages, but the messages won't appear in the new inbox according to when they were originally sent, but rather by when they were forwarded. Being able to move them would be the proper solution, but it simply won't work.

Perhaps the mail server has a size limit that it allows. Might try a free web service and see if that will work for those attachments.
