Cannot open facebook website in OSX 10.5

I'm having trouble with my wifes iMac running OSX 10.5.3.
She cannot visit facebook. I know there are a lot of posts about this around but I haven't been able to find an answer.
I have a macbook pro (10.6.6) and two pc's and none of them have any trouble visiting facebook on the same network. I have tried cat5 and wifi connections but it doesn't seem to change.
So far I have repaired disk permissions, several times. cleared cache and reset safari and traulled through all the posts I can find on the subject.
My labour hasn't been fruitless though, there was several websites that were unavailable but some of the above actions seem to have cleared up those problems. In fact the other night I did get her computer past the login page of facebook.com but then it locked up again.
The last action I did before that was reseting safari. If I reset it again I can get to facebook.com and login, but then it locks up. I can reset it again and get up to the same spot before it locks up.
We don't run peer gaurdian or any parental control software or anything like that. She doesn't use her computer for anything other than mail and safari and in 2 years has only used 30GB on the hard drive!
Can you help me with this? This is my first post here, I just converted from PC to MAC and I'm loving it, no going back! No way!
Cheers,
Nick

Have you checked the hosts file? The hosts file always overrides DNS and every OS has some sort of hosts file. In a mac the hosts file is located in /private/etc/hosts. Check the hosts file and see if there is an entry for facebook pointing to some sort of an ip address. There really should not be anything in the hosts file except for entries pointing to localhost, broadcasthosts or static entries that you purposely put there. If there are any other entries that you did not put there then delete them. After you have done, that you will want to flush dns entries with this command: dscacheutil -flushcache
This site give more details on the hosts file:

I cannot open facebook in safari it is coming up with cannot connect to server. I can open all other websites though. I have reset cookies & history and hard reset a number of times. I can open other websites no problems.
    Any help appreciated.

You cleared cookies and data in Settings>Safari? Did you close Safari as well before you reset the iPad? Double tap the home button and drag the Safari thumbnail up to the top of the screen to close it.

Rename secmod.db (secmod.db.old) in the Firefox Profile Folder in case there is a problem with the file.<br />
You may have to rename cert8.db (cert8.db.old) as well.
    Firefox will create new files.

  • Cannot Open Facebook in Safari 6.0.1

I cannot open Facebook in my Macbook Air. My browser is Safari 6.0.1 It says that Safari cannot open facebook page because it cannot establish a secure connection to the server. I've already deleted the cookies and removed proxies. What do I do?

Go to Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click Software Update, OR, open the App Store then select Updates from the menu top of that window. Then follow the instructions for updating OS X.
When you're done, launch Safari then try Facebook.
If you still have problems, troubleshoot Safari extensions and third party plugins.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test. If that helped, turn one extension on then quit and relaunch Safari to test until you find the incompatible extension then click uninstall.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

  • Problem in Firefox 4 while opening facebook website

I opened facebook website and was searching for newly added friends in my friend's list search bar and i could not find the names of them , but they exists in the friend list. Moreover i tried the sam on Internet Explorer and it works. So request you to please take immediate action to deal with it.

Symantec need to update their Firefox add-ons so that they are compatible with Firefox 4. They have released an update for Norton 360 to make it compatible with Firefox 4, for details see http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100720113635EN&ln=en_US
I do not know about other Norton products, but if you run Norton LiveUpdate it should inform you if there are updates available. If no updates are available, you can downgrade to Firefox 3.6 if you want to use the Norton add-ons.
To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

    Thank you

If you're using a 3G, you can't run any apps which require iOS 4.3 or newer.
If you're using a 3GS or newer, you need to update its OS from iTunes on a computer first.

    See:

The Firefox 12.0 version that you currently run is no longer supported with security updates

I cannot open a website that I could open yesterday. I used a different computer to access the same website, and it worked. How do I fix my computer?

What happens when you try to access the site? Can you access it from a different computer on the same network? Your profile says you have a Mac Pro, but you posted in the MacBook Pro area. If you have a MacBook Pro, can you access the site from another network, such as a public hotspot?

    Hi,
If you are accessing Facebook with the Safari browser, from the Safari Menu Bar click Safari/Preferences then select the Autofill tab. Click the Edit button next to: Other forms. Delete .facebook.com.
Now from the same Menu Bar click the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies. Delete ALL Facebook related cookies.
Relaunch Safari. Navigate to Facebook and try accessing your messages now.

  • I suddenly cannot open facebook on my macbook pro running OSX 10.8.4. I am traveling in Vietnam, if that means anything. . .

Hi. I've been traveling, using facbook on iphone and my macbook. Suddenly I cannot access Facebook. I prefer to use Safari as my broser, but I downloaded Mozilla tonight to just see if it was a browser issue. The problem carries over into Mozilla Firefox. Both say they can't find the server. However, I can access facebook through my iPhone.
Can anyone help me so I can use facebook through my computer--I'd like to use it on my computer. I use Macbook Pro running OSX 10.8.4. iPhone is iPhone 5 running 6.1.4.
    Thanks,
    EST

Try enabling the Personal Hotspot on the iPhone and connecting the Mac to the Internet thru it. If Facebook works ok then, that would mean the ISP is either blocking or having connection problems whereas the phone carrier is not.
Be mindful that carrier data charges can be outrageous so use this as a test first.

  • Safari cannot open facebook, cannot find server.. why ?

When I try to go to the facebook page, Safari cannot open it, says "Safari cannot find server"..."Safari cannot conect to server".. etc etc

Double-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, then copy it to the Clipboard (command-C):
    www.facebook.com
Launch the Network Utility application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Network Utility in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Select the Lookup tab and paste into the address field (command-V). Press return. Post the output that appears below – the text, please, not a screenshot.
    Step 2
Select the Ping tab and do the same. Please enter the same input as you did in Step 1. Don't use the output of Step 1 as input to Step 2.
    Important Note
Some web browsers and mail clients will automatically convert a domain name such as "www.example.com" to a clickable URL, such as http://www.example.com. That will interfere with the test. If necessary, edit the input in the Network Utility window to remove any added characters.
