Cannot recover database in 1.5.3

I got the 'aperture has detected a discrepancy in your database' message one day - and since I get this notice from time to time, I puit and restarted with the option-command keys held down. But this time, the database doesn't seem to be restoring properly. I think it might be a problem in 1.5.3 since this is the first time that I've tried to restore since that update (the restore process has changed a bit).
I choose 'Rebuild Now'
It loads Aperture properly, but just displays the 'Recovering 1 of 166 projects' forever - until I finally just have to force quit.
if I choose 'Rebuild Later' then it will let me choose the projects to restore. The only ones that will restore properly are the ones where all files are managed. So the problem is with AProjects that have references masters. I keep almost all of my photos on a external firewire 800 drive because I work from a macbook pro and have 20,000+ photos.
So I can restore 1 of 166 projects - not very helpfull.
I do use the library in iTunes and sync all 20,000 photos to my AppleTV - not sure if this could be causing problems.
I've tried creating a fresh library, and then copying in a .approject from my main library - and it sees it and tries to recover but naver can.
If I create a new project in the new library and name it the same as a project from my main library and then replace that .approject file, then Aperture will recover the media files (if they are managed) but discard all edits, etc.
I don't have a vault because my vault system mysteriously died quit a while ago.
I get this message in the console.log when I try to recover a project:

I'm thinking '[<RKVolume 0x111c8380> valueForUndefinedKey:]: this class is not key value coding-compliant for the key diskUuid.' is the key line, but we'll see...
If anyone has any ideas, I'd really appreciate it. My next step is to dig into the sqllite database and try to make sense of it.

One thing to try in these situations - start a new Library and import old Projects manually one-by-one.
You can get at the old Projects without loading up the old Library:
1. Select the old Library in the Finder.
2. Get Info
3. In the Name and Extension pane of the info window, remove the file extension of '.aplibrary'.
4. This turns the Library into a regular Finder folder and you can grab the Projects listed there.
As each project is imported into the new Library, that part of the database will be re-created from scratch.
At a minimum, this should pinpoint exactly which Project is causing the problems.

CANNOT RECOVER DATABASE INSTANCE

Hello,
I have read various topics on the web on hot to startup my database with the following error:
ORA-01033: ORACLE initialization or shutdown in progress (DBD ERROR: OCISessionBegin)
I am trying to execute SQL code at the command prompt but keep getting the message below:

Hi,
This indicates the database is either starting up or shutting down already and so is in an inconsistent state as Lajos pointed out you will need to have a look in your alert log and see what is actually happening. This should be located in the bdump directory assuming this is the background_dump_dest for your DB if you post the tail end of the file into the forum then we can see what is happening and try to sort out what the issue actually is

ORA-01124: cannot recover data file 1 - file is in use or recovery

I am trying to recover standby database, but it is giving the below error.
ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors
ORA-01124: cannot recover data file 1 - file is in use or recovery, recovery is already stated

when i checked in the alert log the recovery is not started. and later i hae given "alter database recover cancel' and the command end up with the below line
"media recovery not started".
it seems that the recovery has stuck in between.
please advise me how to kill the recovery session that's stuck. because i dont want to bounce the standby database.

Without dataguard and MRP, you are running a scripted standby.
In a scripted standby, a RECOVER DATABASE session would have an UNTIL clause (most likely UNTIL SEQUENCE). At the end of the recovery to that point (SEQUENCE#), it exits and shuts down the database.
Also, the scripting is such that when one RECOVER session is active, another session is not allowed to start. It may loop in wait state or exit and retry at the next scheduled interval.
Apparently your standby scripting is not robust enough to prevent another RECOVER session from starting off even as the first is active (and/or it doesn't have a proper UNTIL clause and stop, exit, shutdown actions)
What you have is a custom implementation of a standby database. Without complete details of the script, the "locking" between sessions (to prevent a second RECOVER from starting when one is already running) etc .... we really cannot do much to help you.
Your scripts should be maintaing status information . It should be possible for you to discover the "other" sqlplus session that has issued a RECOVER DATABASE but not yet exited (e.g. ... how about a simple "ps -ef |grep sql" and "ps -ef | grep ora" combination ??)

Recover Database Failed..

I am trying to recover my Oracle 9i v9.2.0.4 database running on Solaris 9 (sparc). Database is in archived log mode and RMAN is also used to perform incremental and full backups.

I also tried to restore and recover to 08-Apr-04, the day before it crashed. This can be done successfully but I still cannot open the database.
The error says I need to used RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS. I followed but the database still refused to open.
What should I do to get the database back online? I am not DBA trained and hence kindly list me the steps to follow.
Is it possible to start without the undotsb01.dbf and then rebuild it? What would I lose by doing this? Any alternatives?

Bad news.. I forgot to turn off my cron jobs last night and it seems that my backups were overwritten. I cannot restore back to 08-APR-04 as it reported RMAN-06023: no backup or copy of datafile found to restore.
Any way to resolve the undotsb01.dbf problem so that I can startup my database again?

Recover database without controlfile and redo logs

Hi guys,
I am doing a testing with an Oracle Database 11.1.0.7.0, I want recover a database in this scenario without using RMAN:
-All controlfiles are missing
-All redo logs are missing
-I have a Backup Controlfile To Trace Resetlogs (bkp_controlfile.sql)
-The database is in archivelog mode
-The database was created with OMF (Oracle Managed Files)
So I have done this steps:
1) When the database was opened I rename all controlfiles and all redo logs
2) Shutdown Abort
3) I run the bkp_controlfile.sql, here I have a problem...
The database put in NOMOUNT, the controlfile was created and started the RECOVER DATABASE USING BACKUP CONTROLFILE, but when run ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS; appear this:

In conclusion...
- If we have all redo logs availables we can recreate the control file and recover the database without any problems using backup controlfile to trace noresetlogs*.
- if we haven´t all redo logs availables, there are 2 situations:
1) If the database shutdown properly:_ We will be able to open the database using recover database using backup controlfile until cancel*.
2) If the database doesn´t shutdown properly:_ We won´t be able to open the database with only a backup controlfile to trace.
With all this I close this thread. Was very good experience.

I wish add the results of one of my tests: if I did all the steps in only one session of sqlplus I can shutdown properly the database, but if do the shutdown immediate* in a new session I can´t shutdown properly the database. Here I post the output:

DB:9.2.0.8
OS: AIX 5.3
I am restoring DB with until time(12/06/2012) for needed tablespaces.
I restored the 12th date controlfile ,which is backed up with archivedlogs. I also have one more controlfile which backed up with full DB..
Restore of tablespaces are completed..
When recovery is going , failed with following error..

I read your post and here's the thoughts that came to mind : ( my largest concern is you might restore something that damages your current system )
1. So you want to restore the whole DB back to 12/06/2012 to get some tablespaces from then right?
2. Are you restoring to a different system?
3. How did you start the database ( NOMOUNT, MOUNT )
4. If you are restoring the whole DB back to 12/06/2012 how did you restore the control file?
5. Your command shows :
restore tablespace SYSTEM,UNDO_GEN01,UNDO_GEN02,TAB_80K_GENCON,TAB_25M_GENCON;
COMMENT : Generally I use recover tablespace for point in time recovery and use an auxilary destination.
Meaning I don't use restore at all, in fact using restore may cause an issue.
SUMMARY : I don't see how this will work as is.
It seems you want data from five tablespaces from about six months ago including the SYSTEM tablespace.
This is an Incomplete Recovery. I believe I would rethink this completely.
Give the time that has past I would consider restoring the whole database to a different server where cannot damage anything.
Once this is done I would decide how to get the data I need.
Or I would check for a daily export file and recover the tablespace data that way.
So you have some good details on your question but it seems the plan is either missing something or you need to add a few more details.
Example
I'm recovering old tablespaces into a test system.
Here's how I'm not damaging my current production system.
I don't have an export from that date.
So take a step back and either rethink or give a few more details on how this is safe.

RMAN Recover database error..

Hi All,
We were trying to restore and recover one of our databases. The restore went well but the recover is erroring out. Can someone please let us know what we should do to remedy this and carry on with the recovery.
We got an error when we were trying to restore the controlfile at the begining (details below), but as you can see, it did manage to restore a copy of the controlfile successfully..

Recover database from cold backup and add ol archivelogs....

Scenarion : I have create in 1 january cold backup of my database. I have from 1 to 4 January all archive logs generated by my database. My database gone in 4 January.
Solution question : How can i restore database using cold backup a than add info from archivelogs to recovered database to do database consist from disaster day.

1. Kill current instance with SHUTDOWN ABORT.
2. Copy all control files and data files from your cold backup to original destination.
3. Make sure all archived redo logs from 01-JAN to 04-JAN are available in the database archive destination (LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST or LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_x).
4. Run as SYSDBA:
startup mount
recover database using backup controlfile until cancel;When prompted for something like

Recover database but don't have archive log file

I use old backup set in tape and restore all datafile completed but I cannot recover that show below errror in RMAN

Have you made backup of all archived redo log files? If so, why this one was disappeared?
Have you applied all archived redo log files before that required archived redo log file?
Please try to recover the database using the following command:
RMAN> RESTORE DATABASE;
RMAN> RECOVER DATABASE UNTIL SEQUENCE 29166;
RMAN>ALTER DATABASE OPEN RESETLOGS;

How to recover database SYSTEM datafile get corrupt ?

Database is in ARCHIVELOG mode, and the datafile belonging to SYSTEM tablespace gets corrupted. Up to what point can I recover the database ?
A. Until last commit.
B. Until the time you perform recovery.
C. Until the time the datafile got corrupted.
D. You cannot recover the SYSTEM tablespace and you must be re-create the database.
and 1 more doubt :
If redologfiles are not multiplexed and redolog blocks get corrupt in group 2, and archiving stops. All redolog files are filled and database activity is halted.
DBWR has written everything to disk. What command can be used to proceed further ?
A. recover logfile block group 2;
B. alter database drop logfile group 2;
C. alter database clear logfile group 2;
D. alter database recover logfile group 2;
E. alter database clear unarchived lofile group 2;

1. A. Since the DB is in archivelog mode, so you can always restore and recover the whole DB including system tablespace datafile till last SCN generated provided the redo record is available in archive/online logfiles.
2. E. Since only redolog is corrupted so archiver won't proceed and hence a db hang is obvious, So, in order to proceed further you need to clear online (un archived log file) and then db will work as usual. Care should be taken that you must take a full backkup of DB(cold backup wherever feasible) as soon as possible after issuing this command. As now you don't have redo info in archivelog files to recover the db in case of a crash.
Please go through Oracle 10g DB Administrators guide (available on OTN) for more details.

I got this error when I tried to restore from my backup with create new control file.Are you sure your backup is consistent cold backup.
Cause: An incomplete recovery session was started, but an insufficient number of logs were applied to make the file consistent. The reported file was not closed cleanly when it was last opened by the database. It must be recovered to a time when it was not being updated. The most likely cause of this error is forgetting to restore the file from a backup before doing incomplete recovery.
Action: Either apply more logs until the file is consistent or restore the file from an older backup and repeat recovery.

R3trans finished 0012 / cannot recover data file 1 file is in use or recove

After a system Cloning from PRD to SandBox, SAP doesn't start any more :
/usr/sap/SID/SYS/exe/run/startdb: Terminating with error code 12
DB startup failed
On the other hand, I can start the database manually, but SAP still doesn't connect to the DB.
The R3trans -d returns the following :
2EETW169 no connect possible: "maybe someone set invalid values for DIR_LIBRARY ('/usr/sap/SID/SYS/exe/run') or dbms_type ('ORA')"
R3trans finished (0012).
DIR_LIBRARY is correctly set.
I tought may be the databse is inconsistent, so I tried to recover the it.
The recover command doesn't work too :
ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors
ORA-01124: cannot recover data file 1 - file is in use or recovery
ORA-01110: data file 1: '/oracle/SID/sapdata1/system_1/system.data1'
I shall be very grateful to you for any help !

More than one "RECOVER DATABASE" session possible ?

Can two separate rman sessions try to execute the "recover database" command at the same time or will the database forbid it ? (hopefully).
Sorry but I am not in a position to test this currently.
