Cannot restart SQL Server Agent - SQL Server 2008 Express
Hi
I don't know if this affected it but we had a auto notification to change our work passwords the other day, I then couldn't get my local SQL express to logon using domain login.
I then went into SQL Server Config Mgr. and both SQL Server Express and SQL Server Agent were stopped. I tried to restart but no luck, so went into properties of SQL Server Express and remapped my domain name (domain\name) and new password and it started,
but agent will not start.I also checked log paths in registry match my log paths in system and went to:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.SQLEXPRESS\MSSQL
Where a few of the folders I didn't have permission but it asked me to confirm I want permission when I dbl clicked on them.
When I try to start agent I get error:
the request failed or the service did not respond in a timely fashion
Whatever that means I don't really know.
Here is contents of SQL Agent file from log:

SQL Server Express and SQL Server Agent were stopped
Hello Andrew,
With SQL Server 2008 Express the "SQL Server Agent" is installed as well, but it's not a supported Feature of the Express Edition, therefore you can't start / use the Agent.

Hi All,
I have a simple SSIS package that reads a flat file and copies it into a SQL Server table.
When the flat fiel is on the C drive I have no problem runnign this package from SQL Server Agent, but as soon as I update the path to a network location the package only works when I run it manually, but fails when is executed via the SQL Server agent job.
The error says "cannot open the datafile", while the datafile location is valid.
Is this a kind of limitation of a SQL Server Agent that only local files are allowed to be processed?
Thanks,
Andrei
SSIS questionHi All,
Thanks for your responses.
I configured the SQL agent service to use my domain account with which I have no porblems accessing the folder. However the issue persisted.
Thanks,
Andrei

CSA 6.0 Server Agent & Windows Server 2008
Does CSA 6 Server Agent support Windows Server 2008?
If not, any idea when?
It would be nice to be able to deploy current server operating systems with CSA.No, here is the supported os list :

SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service is failing to start
Hi All,
I am using SQL Server 2008 R2 Express edition. When i start SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service it is failing to start and gives the below error.
On analyzing the Event logs i found the below event.
The SQL Server Agent (MSSQLSERVER) service terminated unexpectedly. It has done this 14 time(s).
Event id 7034
Event source: Service Control Manager.
I opened the SQL server configuration manager to change the service account and start the service, But that is also failing and it is giving the below error.
Can any one help in this issue ?
Gautam.75801Like Olaf said SQL Server Agent is available in express but cannot be enabled. This is restriction from MS. The reason is that(why its available and disabled) when you upgrade express to enterprise/standard it just uses this disabled SQL Server agent and
enables it. If this feature was not present SQL Server upgrade process would have to write whole code for SQL agent Which I am sure it does not do while upgrading to standard/enterprise.
Please mark this reply as answer if it solved your issue or vote as helpful if it helped so that other forum members can benefit from it

Received an error in SQL Server Agent and none of the Job executed as per schedules and attaching a screen shot of the Error Message while expanding the Job Folder under SQL Server Agent. Additionally, need to find the RCA for this issue to avoid the re-occurrence.
Pls share your experience if any such issue which you have faced earlier.
As usual, after re-starting the Windows Server the issue got fixed and no RCA captured. Please let me know how to drill down and find out the RCA for this issue.Hi,
the exact issue what i had is as in below URL.
https://connect.microsoft.com/SQLServer/feedback/details/243790/sql-server-agent-exception-in-the-tsql-subsystem-agent-hangs-unresponsive
And in the another reference URL i can feel that could be the solution but not able to identify the exact Root Cause.
http://mssqlwiki.com/sqlwiki/sql-server-agent/sql-agent-maxworkerthreads-and-agent-subsystem/
Additionally, attaching the Application Log event details for further Analysis in HTML format.

Credential problem while running with SQL job agent
Hi,
SQL job agent fails to run when I change my computer login (Password) credentials information often.
How I can run the SQL job agent with Database login credentials.
Regards
Venkatesh SHi Venkatesh,
If I understand correctly, you are using a proxy account has your login credential to run a step of SQL Agent Job. So when you change the login’s password, the credential of the proxy account has an expired password, then the proxy account doesn’t work in
your job.
As per my understanding, we can only use SQL Server Agent Service Account or Proxy Account to run the SQL Server Integration Services Package steps in SQL Agent Job. Since the SQL Server Agent Service Account may not have required permissions to access the
resources in the packages, we recommend use Proxy Account. To create Proxy Account, we should create a credential first. To create a credential, we should specify a Windows user account. So we cannot use a SQL Server authentication login to run the job.
A good workaround is use a windows user account with a password that never expire or changes rarely or update the password of credential followed by your login.

Or do EXPRESS-VERSION of sql server does not allow us to do so. ?
I find both 'yes' and 'no' answers when i google this question. Please i am in need of specific answer.

Cannot kill a session that is running a query on a linked server in SQL Server 2008 R2
Hi,
Cannot kill a session that is running a query on a linked server in SQL Server 2008 R2.
When I try to kill, it status shown as "KILLED/ROLLBACK"
I have facing the issue from long back. I searched many and none of them worked for me
Any help is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Jaison
CarverI guess its stuck, can you see some blocking or any other process blocking the rollback.
can you check rollback status using below command. Or you can use sp_who2 and check status column
select percent_complete,estimated_completion_time from sys.dm_exec_requests
where spid=xxx

I want to give a user to read only rights on sql server agent 2008
I want to give a user to read only rights on sql server agent 2008.When I giving SQLAgentuser Role then user is only able to view SQL Server agent as Green but no job visible in job activity monitor.Currently he has db_reader rights on one user database.
What rights should I give?
ThanksThere are 3 SQL server Agent fixed database roles in sql server.
1.SQL AgentUSerRole:- To create and manage jobs
2.SQLAgentReaderRole: To grant read acces.
3.SQLAgentOperatorRole : to run and delete jobs.
For you question you can create a user and grant him SQLAgentReaderRole.
Example:
Create LOGIN test with Password='abc'
Use msdb;
GO
Create User test for login test
use msdb;
EXECUTE sp_addrolemember @rolename='SQLAgentReaderRole',@membername='test'
Hope this solves your problem!!! -
Logs for sql server agent restart
Hi,
Can I get log on the sql server agent restart history of week. I mean the sql server agent has been restarted several times in last week I want to know the date and time when the sql server agent restarted in that week. Is it possible to get
the info?
Thanks in advance,
Pavan
PavanIn addition to Uri's post, here is some more information that might help you:
SQLAGENT.OUT, the log file for SQL Agent. SQL Server Agent can maintain up to 10 Error Logs files. The currently used SQL Server Agent Error Log will be named SQLAGENT.OUT
where is the SQLAGENT.OUT file?
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL11.SQL2012\MSSQL\Log\
What will be when a new file create?
The old file should get a name like SQLAGENT.X and the new file get the name SQLAGENT.OUT (X is numbers 1-9)
This can help you to get more information on sql agent properties (like the location of the log file, the user that start the service and more):
EXEC msdb..sp_get_sqlagent_properties

Below message makes me think you might as well need to repair your installation
>SQLServer Error: 27, Registry information is corrupt or missing. Make sure the provider is installed and registered correctly. [SQLSTATE 08001]

Without errorlog it would be difficult to say why this happened but as errorlog says it has found registry inconsistent so repairing installation would help

Service Account for SQL Server Agent on SQL Server 2008 R2
This SQL Server instance is SQL Server 2008 R2 (10.50.4000). We had Active Domain Service accounts created to run the service accounts for SQL Server and SQL Server Agent.
It has become company policy to alter the service accounts that run SQL Server and SQL Server Agent. Currently, both were running under the Local System Accounts. We have altered the SQL Server but we are having issues with the SQL Server Agent.
I am told by another DBA that
"The agent is requiring elevated rights. It will startup if it has local admin rights, but not with domain accounts without admin rights."
So I was wondering if anyone has come across this issue and how did they resolve it.
lcerni"The agent is requiring elevated rights. It will startup if it has local admin rights, but not with domain accounts without admin rights."
This is completely not true. It is indeed possible to run agent as a domain account without giving it local admin. Chances are you'll need to update the local acls by adding the account to the local security groups. Please see this article for more information:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143504(v=sql.105).aspx
Edit: In addition, it'll need rights to SQL server for that account to connect and do its work. It will need to be given sysadmin:

Here is I am going to do:
Using SQL Server Management Studio
To resize the job history log based on raw size
In Object Explorer, connect to an instance of the SQL Server Database Engine, and then expand that instance.
Right-click SQL Server Agent, and then click Properties.
Select the History page, and then confirm that Limit size of job history logis checked.
In the Maximum job history log size box, enter the maximum number of rows the job history log should allow.
In the Maximum job history rows per job box, enter the maximum number of job history rows to allow for a job.this change does not require SQL agent restart

Why would a SQL 2008 R2 SP2 server agent only see 40 processors when the server has 80?
The SQL Server iteslf see's 80 but the agent only 40? I thought that R2 didn't have this limitation?
Hello,
How you determined that SQL Server Agent or jobs are not seeing all cores? Please explain the issue more in detail.
Thank you in advance.

Cannot connect to SQL Server 2008 Express
I install SQL Server 2008 Express on Windows 7 and make sure SQL Server(SQLEXPRESS) service is running. Then I write a program via Visual C++ & ADO, and try to connect to the local SQL Service instance by using the following SQL connection string:
“Provider=sqloledb;Data Source=(local);Integrated Security=SSPI;”
But the connection fails. I try the same code on a computer with SQL Server 2008 Professional installed and it works without problems.
Please advise. Thanks.Hi chcw,
Are you got any error message/information while connect to SQL Server express instance faild via VC++ & ADO? If so, please post them for further investigation.
Please also check the windows firewall. Firewall systems help prevent unauthorized access to computer resources. If a firewall is turned on but not correctly configured, attempts to connect to SQL Server might be blocked. For more information, please see:
