Canon 1DS Mark III

Does Aperture support the newly released Canon 1DS Mark III (which is different from the 1D Mark III)?

welcome to the forum ...
unfortunately no one will/can tell you when it will come ... you will have to be patient or as you say change to Lightroom ...
it will come when it comes ... and as you can see in the D3/D300 thread (as well as the 40D threads of past months) no amount of clamouring in this forum will change the way apple communicates about aperture ...
please use the feedback to request support ...

I've been working for 2 years with Lightroom and importing pictures from my canon 1ds mark III
Suddenly it doesn't work. Can somebody explain this or help me to change something
so I can import my photos???

As DJ suggests, that's probably not the exact wording. Can we have that, please?
Still need your OS and Lightroom version too.

  • Canon 1Ds Mark III and Aperture - MJK

Just starting using new Canon 1Ds Mark III with Aperture. I am a new APerture and new Apple user.
Photos import fine into Project. When I do any adjustments the photo gets completely distorted in the viewer. It is mostly white with pieces of the photo. Completely jumbled with mostly white space. Photo still emails fine, can't get my Epson 2400 working yet, so not sure about print. Anyone have any answers?
    THANKS!!!

    Hello:
Today I experienced same problem with the pictures. Happened right after I downloaded pictures (RAW) I took today. I used a Canon 20D. The problem went away when I shut down Aperture and re-started it. Hope it works for you.

P.S. In my case, Aperture keeps getting buggier and buggier.

  • Canon 1DS Mark III tethered shooting confusion

The Aperture 2.0 manual says it supports the 1DS Mark III: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1085
The Apple website doesn't include it in supported cameras: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1085
Does anyone know which is correct?

  • IPhone and  Canon 1DS Mark III and Nikon D3

Neither Apple's iPhoto or Aperture recognize the top of the line Canon Mark III 1DS, or the Nikon D3. I have tried to import RAW images from both cameras to no avail. What is the delay?
    Thanks, Norm

I believe that RAW support for the Canon Mark III AND the Nikon D3 was just added in OS 10.5.2 release

  • 1ds mark III raw files

    Hi folks,
I use to work with Canons 1Ds Mark III raw files (all about 21MP or more).
Using Quick Preview mode everything runs fine in terms of speed.
But as soon as adjustment mode is used it takes up to 10secs to laod the raw files. (Loading...)
Comparing this to the latest DPP Version or Capture One 4.1 this seems to be an incredible long time as the other apps take 2 to 3 secs to show the raw file.
What's going on here? I suppose this to be a raw decoding issue rather than a hardware issue???
    Anyone else similar experiences ?
    kind regards Frank

i work the same files on my G5 and usually wait a few seconds to load ... soon i will upgrade to a new MacPro, but this old beast has been great for me, and i am not sure how to break it to her that i want to "trade" her in for a newer model ...
i've also heard the the ati is better .. there has been talk of it here on this board, also check out barefeats.com to see what tests they have done ...

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III and Aperture 2?

I was wondering if anyone using a Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III can confirm if they're able to shoot tethered using Aperture 2? Though it's listed under the RAW support page, this model of camera is not supported in the knowledge base article called: Tips on tethered shooting.
I tried the demo and though it registered my camera, it wouldn't allow me to capture. Not sure if it's a limitation of the demo, or ignorance on my part. If you know for certain one way or another, please share.
    Thanks.

To the best of my knowledge the tethered shooting does not work with any of the newer Canon DSLRs. A workaround that may be good for you is the Aperture hot folder script that I used with Aperture 1.5. If you can't find t just hit the thread back.

  • SRaw support for Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III

I just shot some images in sRaw and was suprised to find the "unsupported image format" message...
I'm using Ap2, 10.5.2 and the latest graphics libraries...
Is this not supported or am I experiencing a unique problem?
I realize the convert to DNG is a workaround - but I'd rather not...

When the 1D Mark III came out (first with sRaw), I saw someone at dpreview (a sports photographer) saying that for the sort of work he did, the resolution wasn't important, but that it would be valuable to be able to send a smaller file wirelessly (using the WFT-1 or whatever it is called) to his editor. The smaller file size would speed up transfers.
On a 1Ds Mark III, the 5MP sRaw seems more useful to me, as it is more than enough for casual shooting. Though, why you would bring a 1DsIII for casual shooting is beyond me.

  • Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III RAW support PLEASE!

Seriously, the camera was announced in August 2007. 6 months have passed and Apple has failed to provide a RAW support update for this camera!
Why is this program targeted towards professionals if RAW support takes longer than a half a year?
If this goes on much longer, I might have to make the dreaded switch to Lightroom. And i truly do not want to do that.
    Sorry, I am upset.

Large Photographic software developers (of which I'd consider Apple, with its iPhoto and Aperture applications, to be part of the group) can get early access to preproduction copies these high end cameras so their RAW definitions can be nearly complete at camera rollout time.
This is a process problem that Apple has (batching RAW definition creation and distribution for all cameras, mostly all those digicams, with OS updates). Apple needs to see this (time delay) is a problem for their Pro application users and set up a new process to to fast-track DSLR RAW definitions (creation/distribution).
The E-3 has been waiting since its release in October as well.
Word is that the new Nikon Defs are in the OS X 10.5.2 update (according to beta testers), so the E-3 and Cannon EOS 1Ds Mark III is probably in there too. Couple of weeks now...would be the expectation...no word on what you'd do if you're running 10.4.

  • I tested my new Canon 5D Mark iii with my 85 1.2 L lens. The images look terrible! What gives?

I just purchased a new Canon 5D Mark iii body. It is replacing my 1Ds Mark ii. I tested it with my 85 1.2 L series lens. I took the RAW images into Capture One 7 to look at them. I was highly disturbed at what I saw. The quality was no where near my Canon 1Ds Mark ii. The images seemed somewhat soft even after applying a consderable amount of sharpening. They also looked flat and lifeless, even after pumping the contrast and adding Clarity. All in all they looked terrible! I must have something wrong, as I have read countless times that the new chip gives incredible results.
When first attempting to set up my camera I set it to Adobe RGB and for RAW images only. I noticed that you seemed forced into deciding on a specific "Picture Style". I left it on the default settting of "Standard". Should that effect my RAW files, or is that bypassed altogether when shooting RAW? I noticed that in "Standard" mode that some in camera sharpening was applied to the files. Is that my problem? Should that be turned down to zero, as I would normally do all my sharpening afterward either in Capture One 7 or other software. I shot all my test images with fast shutter speeds so that is not the issue. This lens is in perfect condition and has always produced incredibly sharp contrasty images. What on earth could be wrong? Any suggestions? I am a professional shooter for the last 20 years, so this is really perplexing me! Help!!!

    Hi Corey,
Picture styles are ONLY applied to JPEG images or video.  They are never applied to RAW.  Canon will "tag" the meta-data of the image indicating picture style choices so that desktop processing software that understands those choices can apply it after-the-fact.  But the point of "RAW" is that the camera will not perform any change to the image which would result in a loss of original data.
As for the soft focus... the good news there is probably nothing wrong with your camera or your lens.  It probably just needs a slight focus calibration adjustment (you don't even need to send it in for this.)
The camera sensor is analogous to a movie screen.  If the image is blurry... it's not the movie screen... it's the movie projector (or the focus).  However... keeping with that analogy... suppose we focused the image perfectly... but then moved the project a foot closer to the screen.  The result would be a slightly out-of-focus image even though there is actually nothing wrong with the projector.
The phase detect focus sensors are on the floor of your camera.  When the reflex mirror is down, some light is bounced down into those sensors to focus the image.  The distance to the AF sensors vs. the distance to the real sensor is supposed to be calibrated to match... but it's actually possible for the AF sensors to think the image is focused when it's really slightly out of focus on the sensor.  For this reason, your camera has auto-focus micro-adjustment capability -- in other words this is something you can test and tune yourself.  The REASON you might do it yourself is because it turns out it can be different for every lens (even two EF 85mm f/1.2L lenses in a row might have slightly different focus).  This adjustment is only available on the mid-range and pro bodies -- it's part of the reason you buy a premium body.  The camera can actually remember the AF adjustment for each lens uniquely.
    See this article:  http://www.lensrentals.com/blog/2008/12/this-lens-is-soft-and-other-myths
    Or this article:  http://www.luminous-landscape.com/essays/are_your_pictures_out_of_focus.shtml
BTW, to test the lens, I'd suggest getting a focus calibration target.  You want controlled conditions when you do this -- don't shoot typical everday subjects because it wont be precise enough.
I use a DataColor Spyder "LensCal".   The LensAlign products are also popular.

  • 1Ds Mark III + Teathered + EOS Utility + Lightroom = CRASH

I picked up my 1Ds Mark III on Monday got it home test it out and everything seemed to work just fine including teathering the camera to the MacBook Pro. Tonight I wanted to test out a couple other features and really check the files out. However I ran into some problems.
First thing I noticed was as soon as the shutter was fired and the image transfers to the computer you get a new window Quick Preview and its just that a quick preview of the image. If you close the quick preview it does not come back the next time you fire the camera.
However if you have Lightroom running and set up to watch a folder and then automatically move the images to another folder (which is required in LR) and the Canon Quick Preview comes up, it will lock the camera up and the blue download status bar stays blue. The next time you fire the shutter you see a Busy symbol with a yellow triangle and an explanation mark in the camera software window. You will no longer be able to download or teather more images.
If this does happen Ive either had to quit or force quit all applications, disconnect the camera and then restart EOS Utility (Leaving lightroom closed) fire the shutter with EOS utility and let the Quick Preview come up then close the quick preview and finally restart Lightroom.
In my opinion its that Quick Preview and Lightroom that are conflicting. Quick Preview is trying to show you the file and Lightroom is trying to move the file to a new folder. The EOS Utility does have preferences for Linked Software I even changed that to None and still the same problem.
Im going to call Canon again tomorrow to go over this in more detail now that Ive found out exactly what causes it and how to work around it, but in my opinion this is a bug and we should be able to turn that Quick Preview Off.
    Thanks
    Mark

To answer a couple questions I received:
    Question:
What computer are you using ? what Mac OS ? did you use the software that came with the 1ds Mark III or did you download/install the latest updates on Canon web site ? Are you using a USB extension cord ?
    Answer:
I'm using a 15inch MacBook Pro 2.1 GHz processor with 2 gigs of memory Mac OSX 10.4.11. I'm using the software that came with the camera and since it was just released in the past week and half the software should be current and I did not see anything new updates on the Canon website. The only way to teather the camera is with USB.
    Question:
Make sure that you've linked software turned off in EOS Utility.
    Answer:
Linked software was turned off. I even tried turning it on and then off. I even tried linking Lightroom, but that just brought up the import dialog box and wanted to import every time I fired the shutter instead of just auto importing.
I still really feel that the conflict is with the Quick Preview and Lightroom trying to move that file while Quick Preview is up.
Either Canon should give us the ability to permanently turn Quick Preview off or Lightroom needs not to move those images in the watch folder ( I never really understood why lightroom requires that after auto import that it has to move the images from the watch folder).

  • Tethering for Canon 1D mark III

    Hello,
Is there any chance, that we will get the Tethering Function in Aperture for the Canon 1D mark III series added during one of the next Aperture updates, soon?
    Regards,
    JO

There haven't been any announcements by Apple so who knows.
The issue isn't a trivial one, though -- the "standard" tethering protocol used by Aperture for tethering to older cameras does not exist on Canon's newest cameras. So Apple would have to do a lot of work specific to the 1D* Mark III cameras to support tethering.
I'd love to see it personally (I can tether with my 1D Mark II, but not my 1Ds Mark III), but don't know if/when it will happen.
Definitely submit feedback via Aperture. The more the merrier!

  • Does PSE11 show HDR exif data for a Canon 5D Mark III?

I have taken some pictures with the HDR feature on my Canon 5D Mark III. The HDR image that the camera creates does not show that it was created using the camera's HDR feature when viewed with PSE11. The Canon Software that came with my camera is ImageBrowserEX 1.4.0 and it shows these data: HDR Shooting Enable, Adjust dynamic range +-2, HDR Effect Natural, Auto Image Align Enable. Is there a way to show the HDR exif in PSE11? Thanks, Anne

Thanks -- I should have mentioned in my original question that I had already looked at File>Info. The usual stuff is there but nothing about the image being created from the HDR camera function, or at least that I could see. I went through all the tabs including Advanced and just don't see it. I will try to figure out how to ask Adobe Technical Support and how to request that they get that info included if it's not there. Anne

  • When will finder show a thumbnail or preview of the raw file images from the Canon 5d mark iii?

I am wondering if anyone has an update on when finder will show a thumbnail for the raw files from the Canon 5d mark III? I've done all the updates possible and nothing has changed, I can't do a quick preview either, it just shows the extension image, not the actual image taken. (The symbol for crw).

I had the same problem for a Canon EOS-1D X and finally got around it by viewing the images in Adobe Bridge. Worked beautifully!

  • Camera Raw 7 does not recognize Canon 5D Mark III RAW files

    Hello,
I have Adobe Creative Cloud installed and I use Adobe Photoshop CS6 with Camera Raw 7. Photoshop nur Bridge CS6 do not recognize the RAW files from the Canon 5D Mark III, though it says on the Adobe support site that the camera is supported since Camera Raw 6.7
When I try to open the .cr2-File I get the message "Photoshop cannot open the file".
    I use Win7 (64 Bit).
    Any help?
    Thanks in advance,
    Robert

    Hi Robert,
Its a known issue as the PS CS 6 was launched with ACR 7 however the support in Photoshop CS 6 would come with ACR 7.1 update which will be live soon.
You are completely right in saying that Canon 5D Mark III was supported in ACR 6.7 but it was only intended for >PS CS 5 & 5.1.
In the meanwhile if you want you can download the RC version of ACR 7.1 from labs.adobe.com.
    Thanks
    Mandhir
