Canon 5/7D to prores - convert with compressor or log/capture?

I have a multi-cam shoot (2x 7D's 2x 5D's) and am wondering which method of converting the footage to Prores 422..
1 - Like Shane Ross' tutorial on tapeless media in FCP7 - using the log and capture function?
(complicating factor is only some of my cards were successfully transferred with card file structure intact, for whatever reason some cards wouldn't transfer using shotput pro [in demo mode] or at finder level - kept getting error 36)
2 - converting the individual files with compressor?
Cheers

Thanks Shane
I think I will buy it, but up until the last minute I thought I'd be doing a straight finder copy. After being recommended it (by your tutorial) I wanted it quickly (don't have a credit card) and assumed the demo version would work fully (albeit with a limited amount of times use). Given the problems I've had with error 36 it's going to be a must-have piece of software. I hope it runs better with the full version!
I will use log and transfer for the cards that came over complete, and compressor for the individual files I had to copy at finder level.
A related question if you don't mind - the tutorial mentioned an adjustment to make the same workflow work with a Canon 550D (T2 i think they're called over there) and I have one arriving tomorrow. However I don't think it was mentioned in the tutorial - can you point me in the right direction?
Cheers

  • Boris title crawl missing after converting with Compressor

Not sure where to put this, since it involves two applications, FCP and Compressor.
I have my credits done as a Boris title crawl (roll). They roll up just like credits in the average movie. They're quite long, spanning almost 4 minutes. Some videos are also included in the open space during this title crawl.
When I convert the files for use with DVD Studio, I used the DVD Best quality 90 minutes presets. It performed that conversion without a hitch.
Looking at the video, everything looks great (it's interlaced, of course). No apparent problems, until the end, where the credits should be scrolling: there's nothing. The videos show up, but only one small section of the credits actually show, and it's cut-off.
I checked the credits again in FCP, and they all fit 100% within the inner title-safe overlays. I've never had any trouble with these rolling credits, except for this problem now.
Any ideas what could cause them to almost completely disappear? most of the time the screen is pure black with absolutely NO text whatsoever. Only three lines show up, and they are cut off on both sides (they extend beyond the view of the screen on both the right and the left).
Many thanks to whoever can assist me.

So you're saying I should just export one as a test? Or, what I was thinking is, export the title crawl as a self-contained movie, then import it back into FCP and then send it to Compressor; can't mess it up like it does if it's a strait-up video, right?
Still can't figure out why Compressor would mess it up like that though. Looks perfect when I export the whole movie as a self-contained movie, which I already did twice. I then burned a sample DVD Using iDVD as a test to see how my video looked on the TV screen. Everything was perfect, except a small amount of flickering in some text (but it wasn't enough to bother me).
Yet, sending it to Compressor completely destroys the title crawl, leaving the intermixed videos untouched. Just plain weird...

  • Problem Converting With Compressor FC6

    Hi Gang
It's my understanding that sites like Vimeo and U Tube utilize some type of compression to help maximize the 'playable options' on the viewer side, depending on the size of the original file. I will not be using either site. Rather, I'd like to employ my own compression and upload to my own site.  I carefully followed a Ken Stone tutorial, (which BTW is geared toward an HD conversion). Still don't know why I can't get compressor to do anything with my test. The resulting outputted file has nothing on it. I should at least have a file to open in QT? It won't open because there's nothing there, it's only 4kb. I must be doing something wrong. I'm using FC6, and I work strickly in Standard Def. The file I'm trying to convert is 2-4 GB's, (a self contained QT file).
    Screen Shots:

Is there another tutorial for FC6 that can walk you through a conversion using a Standard Def. file? This is the tutorial I followed:  http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/vimeo_hd_compressor_douglas.html
    Thanx
    Mike

    Any ideas?

  • Deinterlacing with compressor

I've shot some footage with 2 different cameras and didn't realise that one was 25i and one was 25p. When I put them both in finalcut pro x it needs to render everytime I do an edit. I'm trying to deinterlace with compressor but just wanted to check the best settings to use. The original footage is from a Sony camcorder (HDR-CX6) 1440 x 1080, h.264, 10,235 bit rate, and 25i. In compressor I made this setting:
    Name: i to p
    Description: 25i to 25p
    File Extension: mov
    Estimated size: unknown
    Audio Encoder
              16-bit Integer (Big Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Video Encoder
              Width: (100% of source)
              Height: (100% of source)
                        Selected: 1440 x 1080
              Pixel aspect ratio: HD (1440x1080)
              Crop: None
              Padding: None
              Frame rate: (100% of source)
                        Selected: 25
              Frame Controls On:
                        Retiming: (Fast) Nearest Frame
                        Resize Filter: Linear Filter
                        Deinterlace Filter: Better (Motion Adaptive)
                        Adaptive Details: On
                        Antialias: 0
                        Detail Level: 0
                        Field Output: Progressive
              Codec Type: H.264
              Multi-pass: On, frame reorder: On
              Pixel depth: 24
              Spatial quality: 100
              Min. Spatial quality: 25
              Key frame interval: 24
              Temporal quality: 50
              Min. temporal quality: 25
Is that ok or is there a better way? The encoding seems to be getting longer and longer (already at 3+ hours) When I had it on apple codec the file was going to swell to about 84gig and take over 80 hours!
Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you tried jes deinterlacer ?
It's a free app and many people swear by it. I've even read where some folks have converted to ProRes and deinterlaced with Jes and had great results.
You really should convert to ProRes before deinterlacing. I know the file size is shocking at first but you really want a good stable codec if you want a smooth editing experience. Especially considering that you're working with mixed media. Make them all the same codec and you'll have a much better experience.
Another cool free app is MpegStreamclip, which does a fantastic job at file conversions.
I use compressor sometimes but find it sort of convoluted for simple tasks.
    Hope that helps.

  • Ingested videos not playing in stereo with Quicktime or after exporting with compressor

Why does it seem like every time I try to do something just mildly complex I'm stymied by some bug or problem with the software?
    Here's the deal:
    0) I have footage was shot with a stereo camcorder, a JVC GR-DV3000 (circa 2003), with built-in stereo mics.
    1) I ingest the footage from the Mini DV tape and save it to a camera archive using Final Cut Pro X (latest version).
    2) I use Final Cut Pro to pull the events out of archive.
    3) When the events are played from within Final Cut Pro X, I hear strereo and audio meters indicate the audio is in stereo (left and right channels have different volume levels).
    4) When the events are played with the open source software, VLC, I hear stereo, too.
    5) When I export the files for playing on an Apple device using Final Cut Pro, the audio is in stereo as you would expect.
    BUT:
    5) When I play the event clips with QuickTime from my hard drive after step 2 above, I get no audio from the right channel. Weird, right?
    But most annoying of all:
    6) When I use Compressor 4 (instead of Final Cut) to output the event clips to "SD for Apple Devices" using the default audio settings, I get no audio from the right channel, either.
    7) I've got hundreds, if not thousands, of clips. I'm not about to save each clip manually with FCPX. I need to batch convert these files with Compressor.
    8) I've tried various combinations of the audio import settings ("Analyze and fix audio problems," "Separate mono and group stereo audio," and "Remove silent channels." These options have not solved the issue for me. The clips still play in mono in QuickTime.
When I look at the properties of the file in QuickTime, here's what it shows:
    DV/DVCPRO - NTSC, 720 x 480 (640 x 480)
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Left
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Linear PCM, 16 bit little-endian signed integer, 32000 Hz, Unused
Why it's telling me the other 3 channels are unused, I have no idea. As I mentioned, the footage was shot in stereo and even Final Cut plays it in stereo.
Here's what VLC says about the very same file:
    Stream 0:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: Mono
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bits per sample: 16
    Stream 1:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 2:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 3:
    Type: Audio
    Codec:PCM S16 LE (sowt)
    Channels: 1
    Sample Rate: 32000 Hz
    Bitrate: 512 kb/s
    Stream 4:
    Type: Video
    Codec: (DV Video (dvc)
    Resolution: 720 x 480
    Frame Rate: 29.970030
    Decoded Format: Planar 4:1:1 YUV
If anyone can point in the right direction, I'd much appreciate it.

I ended up just using iMovie to capture video from the camera. The clips now play in stereo in QuickTime perfectly.
It's interesting to note that iMovie saves the clips as .dv file types, not .mov file types like FCPX does.
And it turns out the iMovie capture is *much* smoother. It actually "just works." Ingesting tapes with FCPX, I had to cross my fingers, spin on my head and pray three times to a statue of Steve Jobs before it would work (and even then it would do weird stuff).
The only downside of using iMovie is that it doesn't have the camera archive feature.
I really don't understand why, with $120 billion in the bank, Apple seems to be churning out software as an afterthought. No, software is not where they make their money, but they are ruining their reputation. Ah, well, first world problems.

  • What are some best practices to work with Compressor 3 droplets and new Compressor 4?

I have purchased Final Cut Pro X / Motion 5 and Compressor 4 from the App Store. My installation of Final Cut Studio 6.0.6 / Motion 3.0.2 / Compressor 3.0.5 has been moved to a new folder "Final Cut Studio". I have started the old version of Motion first as advised in this document.
I just tried to use my old Compressor 3 droplets and i am able to convert as before.
I am wondering what I should do now and what the best practices are
Use the old droplets and stick with Compressor 3?
Import the droplets to a new location to be able to use them in Compressor 4?
Recreate new droplets with similar settings within Compressor 4?
What are the changes I can expect from using Compressor 4?

I've found that it helps to meet with each person in your new org that you'll be supporting. Start with the Eloqua Admin(s) and ask for an overview of standard reports, naming conventions, folder structure, processes, etc. Make sure to do the same with sales operations, too. If you're moving into an admin role ask for the data dictionary so you can study it to understand how the data maps from front end CMS to MAP to CRM.
The next phase would be to meet with field marketing and campaign managers. Ask them about current projects, future projects and how you'll support their success with Eloqua.
And last but certainly not least - process documentation! Ask for all of those things and you'll be rocking and rolling in no time.
Good luck in your new role!

  • Exporting Sequence in fcp with compressor

When I try to export a finished sequence with Compressor to Mpeg2 and Aiff files so that I can author a DVD a window comes up in fcp stating
"File Error: a file of this name already exists" Compressor then begins to open and allows you to choose your exporting formats and then when you submit, it fails or crashes.
I have been using this process with success for a couple months and now out of nowhere this problem arises. Any ideas on what went wrong and how to fix it?

James M. has it right. Convert the MP3 and the WAV files to AIFF, 48khz, 16 bit and use those in your Sequence. You might even have to convert the existing AIFF file(s) if they aren't 48khz, 16 bit.
Once you've edited the new files into your Sequence, do an Audio Mixdown, then export.

  • How do I create an MPG2 with Compressor that is neither 16:9 or 4:3?

I have a quicktime movie, exported from FCP which is 1280X800. I need to create an MPG2 also at 1280X800.
    How do I do this?
Compressor only seems to create a 16:9 or 4:3 MPG2 regardless of the original source file.
    Thanks.

    A program Stream.
    It's for a BrightSign video player (HD210) http://www.brightsign.biz/products/hd210.php
The Program Stream MPG2s that I create with Compressor work fine with the player but I just can't find a way of changing the dimensions to 1280X800.
    Thanks.

  • I want to use my canon pixma ip4500 as my printer with my good ole G4.  I need a driver.  Is there an easy  way to get that or is my G4 too old?

I want to use my canon pixma ip4500 as my printer with my powerbook G4.  I need a driver but was very confused with how to get one.  Is it possible and could someone come down to my level and tell me step by step how to do it?  Many thanks.

Nope, your PB is not too old.
Here is the link to the PIXMA ip4500 drivers on Canon's site:
    Drivers & Software
The page has you first select your version of the Mac OS (10.4) from the pull-down "Chose Operating System" menu. Once selected, you'll see the available software, Click on the arrown next to "Drivers" and it should look like this:
(click image to enlarge if needed)
Click the word "Download " and you'll get the driver.
Note at the top of that image there are other links to other documents pertaining to this printer. If you click on "Brochures and Manuals," while you are on that web page, you'll have Canon's instructions, probably better done than by anyone here other than someone who has the same printer model on a Mac running OS 10.4.

i've just upgraded to os 10.8.4 and now i can't open canon raw files in photoshop cs5 with camera raw plug in 6.7 which worked perfectly prior to the upgrade....anyone else encountered this issue?

Adobe's software is a mess in terms of the fact that it's sprayed all over the place and may not survive an OS upgrade.  Try reinstalling Photoshop CS5.

    hi amit
i personally appreciate ur input, just a thought , i tried trunking between 2 cisco 2950s with a media converter in between , it didnt work out, i mean , is it a must to have a converter with trunk functionality for the links to work and have trnking , as a converter is just a passive device which connects two ports, the links come up, but no trunking, any specific config i need to make in order to achive trunking with a converter in between with no trunk features on the converter itself.

  • Rendering to ProRes 4444 with alpha channel

    Hello Everybody,
I have question? I have a green screen project finished. But when i render my footage to ProRes 4444 with aplha i got a mega file more then 5gb. In the specifications I found out that I have a bitrate of 203,57 Mbit/s. How can i lower the bitrate in the rendersettingd for this codec?
I hop to hear some of your suggestions.
    Kind regards,
    Gowan Genis

What Andrew said.... Production codecs are all going to have high data rates. That's why we use them in production. Storage is so cheap now that it shouldn't be a problem for anyone that is making a living making movies or for anyone with enough budget to support a movie making hobby. My first 4GB Ultra SCSI drive array cost nearly $20K, I just bought a 1.5TB drive for $89... It wasn't that long ago that I was paying $1 / foot to shoot, process, work print and sync 35MM film. (98 feet / minute @ 24 fps).
If you want a smaller file size you'll have to go to a delivery codec. Just be sure you know what to use when...

i set the printer to correct icc profile
print out comes out same with glazed colors and missing tones/colors
however when i use the same printer on windows and with light room, following same icc profile, colormunki calibrated profile, the print our are excellent.
i have also tried using printer manage profile using the Mac and Aperture and get same poor prints
can  you please assist and thanks

I've a Pro9000 and also use Colormunki successfully.
When I use Colormunki, I calibrate both of my monitors and the printer/paper combination. Colormunki saves the generated profiles to the correct places -- I don't load or change any profiles after that as that would mess-up what the Colormunki had just done for me, and this would likely mess-up the prints.
Though I double-check the settings in the print dialogue, the choice for the printer handling things is already grayed-out. Colorsync handles it all just fine.
