Canon MP620 Loses Connection

I have a Canon MP620 wirelessly connected to my Mac Mini, Leopard 10.5.8. I've had it for at least six months now with no problems, flawless printing and scanning. All of a sudden today I go to print, and nothing. I have changed no settings on the computer since the last print job a couple days ago and it's like the computer just doesn't "see" the printer. No error message, but when I open the print queue it says "Hold" and when I click on the Utility > Network it says "Communication Failed."
I did the usual: restarted the printer, rebooted the computer, several times, even restarted the wireless router, to no avail. So I started fresh, deleted all related files and broke out the install CD. Followed all directions to the letter and nothing.
I've repaired disk permissions, downloaded the latest drivers from the Canon site, still nothing. I've spent five hours on this now and and the frustration level is rising. (Naturally, when I was ready to call Canon Tech Support, it was a half hour after they closed and they're not open on weekends).
The other two devices that rely on the wireless router (iPod Touch and iPad) are working fine, FWIW.
When I run the Canon IJ Network Tool I get as far as testing the network performance. There are no bars at all and it says that it cannot test the performance, showing a question mark above the printer and router.
I don't know if this has any bearing on anything or not (if not, please don't laugh at a newbie's question), but earlier in the process of running the Network Tool, it shows a handful of area networks, mine being at the top of the list and having the strongest signal. It shows that my network is on Channel 6, and there is another network also on Channel 6. Could that be causing some sort of interference if, say, the other network is a new one or recently changed to Channel 6? I tried to see if there was a way that I could change the channel to an unused one, but couldn't find any documentation on how to do that.
Again, nothing has changed since I printed last. No setting changes and the printer and router are still about two feet from one another. Any suggestions?
TIA!
- Bob

On a lark, I tried printing from my Acer Windows XP netbook...and it worked!
So it's obviously not a problem with the printer itself, but for some reason, the Mac just isn't "seeing" the printer. The drivers are there, but when I go to print I get a "Communication Failed" message (from TextEdit). When I tried to print from Firefox, I got a 306 message, so they are presumably the same error.
On an aside, I don't know if this is related, but Safari isn't working. I don't use it too much anyway, but I launched it and when it tried to bring up the home page I got the following error:
Safari can’t open the page “http://www.apple.com/startpage/”. The error is: “Operation could not be completed. Operation not permitted” (NSPOSIXErrorDomain:1) Please choose Safari > Report Bugs to Apple, note the error number, and describe what you did before you saw this message.
I trashed the preferences, reset Safari, even trashed it altogether and downloaded it from the Apple site, all to no avail. I keep getting that error message when I try to navigate to a website.
After Safari wouldn't operate properly, and the ongoing printer communication errors, I ran a full virus scan with Intego's VirusBarrier X5 (all filters updated). No viruses (I didn't think there would be, but wanted to rule it out).
Any ideas...?

  • My Canon MP620 just stopped printing text: it can print photos etc but when I send a word document (with a picture) it only prints the picture. Any ideas?

    Hi Everyone:
I have a  Canon MP620 printer connected directly into my Airport base station. So far it has worked perfectly - I can print any type of document over the network from my MacBook Pro.
Yesterday something weird happened. I have a resumé (as a word document) I was always printing but this time all that was printed was a photo and no text. I did a print preview and it looked fine. I converted to PDF and nothing was printed. I then created a brand new word document and again nothing was printed. I have no problem with images but for some strange reason no text  can be printed. All that happens is that the paper goes through and comes out blank.
    Any ideas?????
    Thanks a lot in advace!

When I got my macbook air about a year ago, it automatically detected my Canon MP620 wireless printer.  Now I just tried to print, and it says the the computer is unable to connect to the printer.  I've installed the Canon software disk, and still nothing.  I go to Settings, select Printer, and still can't find my printer.  Any help would be appreciated.  Keep in mind, I'm highly tech-stupid.  M

I'm a recent switcher and have been reading with great interest the problems others are having connecting the canon mp620 wireless. I don't have a router..I just want to have the printer/copy/scanner(mp620)talk to my mac wireless. One of my specific problems is my lack of mac knowledge...pc user 15+ yrs...if someon, when explaining the steps, please tell me how and where to access certain information eg username/password etc. I will be very grateful...currently I am configured via usb cable...I intend only to have the 620 approx 5 feet from the mac...btw...my wireless keyboard and mouse were cinches to hook up this has been frustrating...many thanks to all in advance

  • How to get a canon mp620 to work with mac wifi on os 10.5.6

    Hi y'all
This is simply a summary of the steps outlined by PAHU and Kappy on the tiger print & fax page who are the big brains here that explained the steps that worked for me on Mac OS 10.5.6. Thanks and respect to those guys.
First thing to understand is the printer doesnt create its own wifi signal for the mac to pick up ( which is what I was expecting) it hooks up via your home wifi set up for which you need a wireless router. If you don't have that you are in a no go situation and will probably want to kill someone.
So here goes (this may take a while!!)
    1) Got to System Preferences>Internet&Network>Sharing
    check internet sharing
    2) Open Network Utilities in Applications when you are attached to your WiFi network, choose Info (the left most pane) and check what the IP address assigned to your wireless router for your home network. mine came up under Network Interface (en1) and was 192.168.0.1 for the router. You can also check this in System Preferences>Network>Airport>Advanced>TCP/IP. Check the subnet mask there too.
    3) Install the drivers for the Canon MP620 (i tried at first having used the Cd and then downloaded ones from he canon website. Now it works - this is probably relevant. PAHU says you need the Canon IJ Network tool v 2.66 to work!!
    4) Connect the switched on printer via USB.
    5) Go to System Preferences>Print & Fax
and if no Canon MP620 shows up add the printer (click +) and choose Canon MP620 and then click on Open Print Queue. Click Utility in the top right hand quadrant.
    6) Choose the USB pane and the printer should show up in the window. Click on it and click Network Settings button. Now you are in Canon IJ Network Tool - whether you realised it or not.
    7) It should ask you to set up the printer for the network. Choose your home wifi name (SSID) from options and enter the password you normally use. I have a WPA and used TKIP (Basic Encryption).
    8) Now you need to manually set the IP address for the router and the printer. In the TCP /IP section of Canon IJ Network Tool set the Router address to be the same as you found in Network Utility - in my case 192.168.0.1. Set the subnet mask to be 255.255.255.0 (you can double check this by looking in System Preferences>Network>Airport>Advanced>TCP/IP). Still in the TCP /IP section of Canon IJ Network Tool set IP Address to something that is the same as your router address except change the last digit eg I put 192.168.0.10 instead of 192.168.0.1. This will be the IP address allocated to your printer. Click OK and it will tell you it is sending these settings to your printer.
    9) If you have been struggling with this for a while you may need to enter the printer Settings section choose Device Settings and then LAN settings and choose reset LAN settings to start again.
    10) You know you are winning when you chooses Wireless LAN settings list and things look similar to what you entered on the mac. So unplug the USB and on the printer choose change wireless/wired to wireless.
    11) Now go back to System Preferences>Print & Fax and delete the Canon MP620 entry by pressing -. Then press + choose More Printers, wait a while and select MP620 in Canon IJ Network when it shows up or choose Canon IJ Network if you get the option . The printer should be there as MP620 with a numerical address next to it. Choose that. You should be off. (NB Repeat step 11 for any other macs on the network after downloading and installing the printer driver to that mac)
    12) Now when you chooses Wireless LAN settings list on the printer it should say active.
    Print away.
BTW Canon support had absolutely no idea at all to do this although endearingkly the guy admitted that the manual wasnt very helpful........they escalated me to a higher level enquiry and said someone should phone me back. When or if they do I will email them this post!!

    OK
    Scenario 1
    (assumes Mobile Me membership)
Set up Apple Mail in your Mac Pro, iMac, ... and set preferences in Mobile Me to include email stuff
Login to MacBook Pro, Air, ... other iMac, other Mac Pro > enter mobile me stuff there and Bongo! Apple Mail on the second machine synchronizes with stuff set in Apple Mail on first machine.
Turn on the iPhone > Bongo! iPhone Mail will show the same email accounts as on the other two machines described above.
One does not need to re-enter stuff for the sake of it. Mobile Me makes it easy.
On the second machine create a new email account or add an existing one to Apple Mail > Bongo! Details updated on the first machine and also on iPhone.
    Scenario 2
(assumes preferences set in Mobile Me for calendars and contacts)
Create new contacts in each of the three machines (that is the first machine, the second machine and the iPhone) > Bongo! Details will be synched across all three machines (okay, iPhone calls them contacts and the other machines call it Address Book but ... )
Create appointments in Calendar or iCal in ... well, they are synched as well.
    Scenario 3
On a PC, away from each of the three machines detailed above. Need contacts and calendars (yes, iCal and iPhone calendar support multiple calendars with an overview summary of all, yep, ALL calendars.
Fire up Safari on the PC (Safari 4 seems sweet) > go to www.me.com > enter username and password of Mobile Me account > Bongo!
I suppose it may also be a time thing in sense that many people, self included, might recall a time when every calendar needed every detail keying in (other computer operating systems running different applications). Sure there were import/export utilities or thunks bet these tended to be at variance with each other regarding ordering of data fields, field parameters and in my own experience a bad import though swift was less reliable than re-keying in the details.

  • Canon MP620 print driver does not work with Snow Leopard

Bought a Macbook & bundled Canon MP620 printer in Dec 08. Two days ago upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I can no longer print (the printer is not recognized), it only sees "Bonjour scanner" (the printer is a multi-function printer, copier, fax, scanner). Spent more than two hours with two different Apple tech support people over the phone; talked to Apple personnel in store. My printer is connected via Ethernet cable to a wireless modem, and I connect to the wireless modem via Airport. The phone tech person insisted that this printer is supported by Snow Leopard, but we reloaded the print driver from the Snow Leopard installation disk with no results. Finally my last resort, which worked, is to go to Radio Shack and get a cable that has a USB-A (printer) to USB-B (Mac) attachment. I was able to print. It is unacceptable for Apple to have this problem, as I went into the store four different times to discuss whether I should upgrade to Snow Leopard, and was told on every occasion that Snow Leopard will make everything run faster, more smoothy, etc. NOT! I want Apple to post a notice on their web site to a) confirm their print driver problems with Snow Leopard and b) to confirm WHEN new print drivers will be released.

Have a look at my last posting re Canon network printing.

  • Can't get Canon MP620 to work wirelessly with MacBook Pro or AirPort

I bought a Canon MP620 printer at the Apple Store. I specifically asked if it would work wirelessly with my MacBook Pro or AirPort Express since I read comments to the contrary on here. I was assured it would work without a problem and I wouldn't need to upgrade to AirPort Extreme. My Mac is not able to find my printer. Does anyone have any suggestions? I did all of the troubleshooting and nothing works. I have another printer plugged into my AirPort Express so I can't plug this one in (was told at Apple Store that I wouldn't need to).

    Hi magcat72,
As BDAqua has mentioned already, you need to configure the wireless network settings first. This is done by connecting the Mac directly to the printer via USB. But before you do this, stick the MP620 CD into your Mac and install the drivers and the Canon IJ Network utility. Once these have been added to the Mac, you can then connect the 620 to the Mac. This should automatically add the printer to your printer list (in Print & Fax). If it doesn't, then you can add the printer manually, by clicking the + and using the Default view.
Once you have the printer queue installed, you can open the queue and click the Utility icon. This will display the MP620 connected via USB. Select it and then click the Network button. This will now guide you through connecting the MP620 to your wireless network.
Once you have completed the network configuration for the printer, you can turn it off and unplug the USB cable from your Mac. You can then move the printer to where you want it to reside and turn it back on again.
Now you need to add the network printer queue, as the previous queue was for direct USB. In fact, to save you selecting the wrong printer, delete the current MP620 from your list by using the - (minus) button.
To add the network printer queue, select to Add a printer and then select More Printers. In the top menu you should see Canon IJ Network. Select this and after a short while the printer should appear with its MAC address (a series of numbers and letters separated by colons) in the lower pane. Select the 620 and click Add.
Now you should be ready to print. If any of the above doesn't work for you then please reply.

  • Canon MP620 simply wont go WiFi

    Hey
I've been googling like a mad and reading through all MP620 topics in the Apple Discussions forum without any luck. I'm beginning to wonder if my Canon MP620 is defect.
The printer works when plugged directly to my MacBook via USB. The printer does not work via WiFi after I've put in the info for my Airport Express (802.11n & WPA/WPA2 Personal security) via the print utility tool - I can enter the info but when I try to establish the connection afterwards via the Setup tool I get a "Could not connect to access point".
Since the printer is close to my Airport I figured that I'd give up on the wireless function and just plug it in to the USB on my Airport - but that doesn't work either!! The Airport registers it, I can find the printer when I search for it on my Macbook, but when I try to connect I get an unkown error (-XXXX).
The firewall is disabled on my MacBook and after running through several setup guides I'm getting close to just returning the printer. I haven't had this much trouble with any software or hardware since I was on PC
Any suggestions or guides are welcomened and I'm of course ready to feed you with any information about my system that you might need, please - help!
(btw, how come you make a printer that can't connect to WiFi through a guide on the printer itself, stupid!)

  • Canon MP620 printer scanner cannot be added as a device

I've been searching for and trying different solutions for over 5 hours now. I'm hoping someone can help me. This canon device should work similarly to the newer printer/scanners in this line. This device worked fine for me when connected directly to my iMac via USB. I recently upgraded to OS X 10.8 and connected the printer to an Airport Extreme so both PCs on our wireless network could access it. This worked fine, could print from both the Macbook Air and the iMac with no problems. Then I tried to scan something and went down the rabbit hole. Found that the printer was not properly connected to the wireless network, and I have been unable to re-run the wireless setup using the Canon IJ Network Tool. After numerous efforts of installing the original startup disk, restarting, restarting the printer, installing all new drivers and software from the Canon site, I'm now in a worse situation than when I started. Now the iMac doesn't see the printer at all.
I had cleared all devices in my efforts to reset and start over, but now I am unable to add the printer back to my printer queue. At this point it's connected directly from my printer to the PC, so there shouldn't be anything complicated here, but the PC doesn't see it. I'm completely stuck.
This thread had great information for my original problem, but by the time I found that thread, my efforts to fix it had made it worse and now I can't access the printer at all.
Please help! Best case scenario, I'd be able to use the printer/scanner on our wireless network. But at this point I'd be happy to just be able to use it with a direct USB connection to the PC. Right now it's an expensive door stop.

Okay. The first thing to check is what is currently set in the MP620. There is every chance that it is still correctly connected to your wirless network.
On the MP620, use the dial to select Settings then press OK.
Then rotate the dial to select Device Settings and press OK.
And then rotate the dial to select LAN settings and press OK.
One of the options in the list should be Confirm LAN settings. Select this and press OK.
The next thing you should see is wireless LAN setting list. Select this and press OK. This will show if the connection is active, the SSID (wireless network name) and the IP address it is using. Make a note of this IP address.
So is the MP620 still connected to the Extreme network?

  • Cannot see  Canon MP620 installed printer and Canon IJ Network

I try to install my new printer Canon MP620 on my iMac G5 (10.4.11).
The installation procedure seems ok according the documentation.
When I want to use the printer the "Canon IJ Network" is not available. This option should be present when I click on "More Printers" in the "Printer Browser" (others protocol like AppleTalk are listed).
The Canon MP620 driver is not visible in the driver list.
The printer can be use by other computers (XP, Vista) and is available on my LAN . I can see the printer with the "Canon Network tool" and the network scan function works fine.
I reinstalled, download the last version from Canon web site, repaired authorizations, ... without success.
Any idea and help are welcomed !

The printer is connected with a RJ45 cable 100 MBytes. I can ping it from the mac, the http service of the printer is reachable ... thus I guess this is not a network problem.

  • Canon MP620 won't print

I have a Canon MP620 printer that for some reason the drivers were missing one day and I was unable to find the discs for the printer. I was able to find them online again and it's able to scan but now it won't print anything.
I have it connected via USB to my MacBook Pro (running on 10.5.8) and when I try to print something, the printer queue appears and says that the job is processing and the same on the printer screen but nothing is being printed.
If anyone has some sort of solution, it would be much appreciated.

Solution Menu is just a front-end to the other Canon applications, such as MP Navigator and Easy Photo Print. Solution Menu does not do any of the printing. So, is it the Easy Photo Print application that you cannot print 4" x 6" photos with?
Canon released later versions of applications to be compatible with 10.6. If you are still using the Leopard versions of these applications from your upgrade then you will have download and install the later versions.
If you have the later versions but are still having problems, have you tried using iPhoto as an alternative to see if this will work printing 4" x 6" photos.

  • Just upgraded to snow leopard, downloader apple support drivers for canon mp620.  Why won't a printer list display in add printer window?

Just upgraded to snow leopard, downloader apple support drivers for canon mp620.  Why won't a printer list display in add printer window?

Assuming the MP620 is connected to your wireless network, then there are two components to this device - the printer and the scanner. The printer uses Canon proprietary software while the scanner is supported by Apple's Bonjour service. So in many cases, you will at least see the scanner, shown as Bonjour Scanner in the Kind column, while the printer can take longer to appear and is shown as canonijnetwork in the Kind column. If you cannot see either then you have a network issue. Try turning off the MP620 for a minute and then turning back on. Then see if the scanner / printer component appears in the Add Printer window. If you still don't see either, then confirm the MP and the Mac are using the same network. If you know the MP's IP address you can use Network Utility to Ping the address. You can also enable Bonjour Bookmarks in Safari preferences and when selected, the MP620 should appear.

  • Wired LAN for Canon MP620

I have had mixed success once I upgraded my MacBook Pro 17CoreDuo to Snow Leopard with my Canon MP620 in my office. In Leopard, it was set up as a wired LAN, with a cable running from my Airport Extreme Base Station to my printer. Scanning was nice and speedy.
All I can seem to do now is get it set up wirelessly, and the scanning is way too slow.
What is the proper way to set up a wired LAN with Airport Extreme?
I have gone so far as to get the printer on the same IP settings as my Mac.
Mac IP is 192.168.1.55 Printer IP is 192.168.1.70
Mac Subnet Mask is 255.255.255.0 Printer Subnet Mask is the same
Mac Router setting is 192.168.1.1 Printer Router Setting is the same
On the Printer, it is set to Wired LAN, and the wired LAN settings are all reading correctly.
I can print as long as I keep the USB connected to the printer. As soon as I try to remove it, it shows up as "offline".

When you have the printer connected via wired or wireless, you will have to add another print queue. The USB queue is purely for connecting from the Mac to the printer via USB, so this is why it will show offline when the USB is disconnected.
To add the network printer on 10.6, you don't use More Printer > Canon IJ Printer menu like you did with 10.5. Instead, you need to select the Default browser view and wait. The printer will eventually appear in the Default view with the Kind column showing 'canonijnetwork'. Note that you will probably see the scanner appear very quickly, because it uses a different protocol to advertise itself on the network.
Note that the printer will only advertise itself on the network if the v10.26 driver is installed. The version 10.19 driver included with 10.6 does not work across the network. If you open the Options & Supplies button for the USB printer queue, it will show which version you are using under the General tab.
Note also, if you have the Parallels VM application installed, this can stop the network printer from appearing in the Default browser view.
