Canopus ADVC-300 to monitor - still image only

When I play what's on the timeline, I expect to be able to see it on my analog monitor connected via composite video to the Canopus box.
All I get is a still image of one of the frames in the timeline.
Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!
MikeR

I now have video out on the monitor when I'm using the Viewer window. Should I also be able to see video out on the monitor from the timeline (e.g., when scrubbing) or using the controls in the canvas playback window?

  • Audio Drift when importing VHS Tapes-Do I need a Canopus ADVC 300

Embarking on the daunting task of importing/editting >100 2hr VHS tapes, and want to get the best results for my efforts.
I pop a tape into a VCR connected via S-Video (video) and RCA (audio) cables to a Sony DVMC-DA1 AD converter, and from there to my Mac Pro via Firewire. Use FCE "Capture Now" using NTSC DV Converter setup. Start capture, let it run unattended, and return at my leisure to do some rough editting.
Problem is the audio on the imported clip gradually loses sync, by about 2 seconds by the end of the clip. The sync problem is present on the clip when played with Quicktime as well.
    Questions:
    1. Is there a reasonable way to correct this in FCE?
    2. Since my Sony converter is nearing 10 years old, will use of a more recent AD converter such as the Canopus ADVC 300 result in a perfectly synced import?
    3. If so, can you comment on the Canopus's purported video noise reduction and image stabilization capabilities? Is it noticable/worthwhile?
    Thanks for your time.

    Hello,
The problem is the audio is not 'locked' to the video, and your old Sony DVMC-DA1 does not appear to support locked audio.
The only way you might deal with this in FCE itself would be to capture shorter clips (say, under 15 minutes each) which would minimize the degree to which the audio drifts out of sync in each clip. (The longer the clip, the greater the drift.)
Given the large amount of video you wish to digitize (some 200 hours), it will be far preferable to use a Canopus ADVC-100, 110 or higher model - +they all support DV locked audio+ - so the video & audio are sync'd without the need for manual intervention or capturing short clips.
I have used the Canopus 100 & 110 extensively and have been very happy with the results. Sometimes, depending on the VHS tape, there is some slight banding at the very bottom of the image but 1) this is +usually not visible+ in the finished movie because it is outside the 'image safe area' and 2) if necessary can be compensated via about a 2%-4% enlargement of the image in FCE (which is not enough to soften the image).
I have not used the Canopus 300 because I never felt the need, as I am happy with my results from the 100 & 110. Users of the 300 have been pretty positive about its built-in TBC and image cleaning capabilities.

  • What is the BEST cable connection from Canopus ADVC 300 to Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card?

I must connect an ADVC 300 to a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Capture Card.   For best quality, which cable should I use?
On the ADVC 300 there are outputs of firewire, S-VHS and RCA.
On BMPro it's a little confusing. On the breakout cable there are connectors that say:
    -5 B-Y OUT
    -4 Y OUT
    -3-R-Y OUT
    -7-R-Y IN
    -8-Y IN
    -9 B-Y IN
    -15 AUDIO IN RIGHT
    -10 AES/EBU OUT
    -12 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -14 AUDIO LEFT OUT
    -13 AUDIO RIGHT OUT
With the BMPro, there is also a separate, shorter cable.  On one end it looks like S-VHS and on the other there are two connectors, one black and one blue.
On the actual BMPro Express card strip instead of using the breakout cable, there is HDMI IN (and HDMI OUT).
How should I connect this?  Is there an adapter cable of FIREWIRE TO HDMI?
    Any help is much appreciated.

Well, when I researched how best to digitize VHS (into Final Cut Pro 7), I learned two of the best devices to use are BMPro and Canopus ADVC 300.  I’m using the ADVC 300 for the built-in time base corrector.  I definitely want to use that to stabilize the video.  I also read how well BMPro improves image quality.  So, I thought to use the two together must produce outstanding quality (well, as good as VHS can be).
Perhaps I got confused into thinking I can use both.  But the BMPro appears to have an S-VHS adapter.
I guess I’m wondering what is better quality:
Run the firewire from the Canopus ADVC 300 converter directly into the firewire port on the Mac Pro
Or, run an S-VHS cable from the Canopus ADVC 300 into the BMPro Capture card
(I should mention that I have purchased all these items and already have the BMPro Card installed so at this point it’s not a cost issue, but rather an issue of simply which works best?)

  • Issue with importing DV from Canopus ADVC-300

    My concern is this:
When I convert and import footage from VHS tapes through my Canopus ADVC-300 I have to babysit the import because whenever there is a spot on the tape without footage (blackness, snowy confetti screen) either the Canopus device stops sending the signal and iMovie stops importing because of this OR iMovie senses the same thing the Canopus does and stops the import.
Is there a fix for this? I would like to be able to just hit IMPORT and walk away for 2 hours, so I can do other things with my day and simply go back and edit out whatever frames are fuzzy or blacked-out.
    Please help... Thanks!

    Hi Roots and welcome!
I use the canopus ADVC110, presumably not a universe away from your Canopus, but I have only once got the problem you describe from VHS tapes, and that was a tape that had been stored too long without use.
Try fully winding the tape forward and then rewinding again. It can loosen 'sticky tape'. Cleaning the tape heads of the VCR is also beneficial.

  • MacPro, FCE 3.5 and Canopus ADVC 300

    Hi All,
I finally got the new beast setup! I started to do some work today then ran into a really weird issue I hope someone can help me resolve.
    Here's the new setup...
The Mac Pro has a SIIG PCIe FW card in it and that's attached to the same FW drive I've been using with the PB G4. The on board FW has the same Canopus ADVC 300 connected to it I had with the PB G4.
Now here's the interesting part... I set the video playback to Apple NTSC Firewire, no problem. I start playback, nothing. I click View/Video/Apple NTSC Firewire, then click play in the canvas and it plays back normally.
Hang on, it gets stranger now... I open another program, Safari for example. I do what I wanted then go back to FCE. I click play, nothing. If I go back to the open program, then back to FCE and hit play, it plays normally. I tested Finder and it does the same thing. I also found If I go back to View and choose Apple FireWire again, it will play.
    What am I missing here??
    Thanks for any suggestions!!!!!!
-John, currently the seriously confused one!

Problem still exists. Just closing the question.

  • Canopus advc 300 grass valley

Hi! Just before upgrading to Snow Leopard, I asked both Apple Assistance and Grass Valley Assistance in order to know if my *CANOPUS ADVC 300* comply with the new OS. Both of them answered that I had to ask the other one!
I searched the web for forums, but I found just that Canopus ADVC 100 isn't recognized by Snow Leopard (perhaps 'cause firewire connection).
Nothing about ADVC 300 (which is currently on sale on Apple Store!)...
Anyone have already tried this with Snow Leopard?
Or will I be compelled to make a partition with the old OS just to acquire video with canopus??
    Thanxxxx

Great. There's written that complies with 10.6. So we can dare to try?
Anyway this was the answer I got on October 15 from "Canopus TechSupport" <[email protected]>:
+Many ADVC users are complaining about their unit not being recognized on+
+their mac after upgrading to snow leopard. I recommend reading the mac+
+forums for more information on the lack of DV device connectivity (among+
+other issues) experienced by many users. Currently, we have not+
+certified snow leopard with any of our products.+

  • Export to Still Image only exports PICT. PICT not supported in 64-bit

Quicktime Player Pro 7 only exports still images as Quicktime compressed images in a PICT container. However, neither Preview nor Photoshop CS5 read PICT files anymore. (There don't seem to be any 64-bit PICT handlers)
So I can export a still image out of a movie?

Yes. Either use Leopard OS for QT 7 Pro export as a PICT and Preview to covert to another format or use MPEG Streamclip (free) to export the frame directly to JPEG, TIFFF, and/or PNG formats under Snow Leopard OS.

  • Imovie still images only stretched to 60seconds

    To all
quite new to imovie and using 08, but when i put music to a still image, the still image can only be stretched to 60 seconds.
it doesn't seem like its a problem to copy the image and make a second image for a second 60 second length, creating 2 still images with music, to 120 seconds length.
is that the correct way to do things?

There is a limit of 99 seconds in iMovie 08, but you can put multiple identical images back to back.
If you upgrade to iMovie 09 or iMovie 11, this limitation is no longer there.

  • FCE 4 for slideshows with still images only

I recently put together a slideshow in FCE 4 from my still photographs. The show looks great when I run the original file. But the DVD I created looks awful. Is there a special way to size the still images for better quality. I sized them the way we do at camera club for our digital projector (1024 X 768, resolution 100).
    Thanks.
    Barb

Unfortunately, Tom, the slideshow capabilities in iPhoto are not sophisticated enough. I need to be able to "choreograph" the images with a musical selection. I like the marker features in FCE so I can easily time out the musical selection and place the transitions where I need them before I even import my images. I also like the ability to play with the audio, for example, trimming and fading out a piece of music that may be a tad long; or starting a selection of music after a title slide has been on the screen. I kind of need the type of editing one does with film but using still images. If only Apple would combine some of the features of Final Cut Express with a program like iPhoto that handles the still image resolution. Any possibility of that happening?

  • Canopus ADVC 300 compatible with FCPX ?

    The title says it all.
Compatibility with FCPX would make my transition forward much easier as I still need to convert VHS from time to time.
    Thanks.

    Yes!!!
Soon after downloading FCPX, I hooked up the ADVC300 which appeared as a choice when clicking on Import From Camera.
Made a brief "Import " of a VHS tape.
I didn't bother installing the Picture Controller 300 software as I just replaced my MBP internal hdd and did a clean install of apps that don't require Rosetta.  In other words, I'm ready for Lion.  Apps that require Rosetta are on a small SL partition for a while longer.
i5 MBP, OSX 10.6.8 on a Lion-ready partition, 750 GB Seagate Momentus HDD, 8 GB RAM.

  • Working with still images only in FCP

    Hello:
I am an editor/musician  working on a very cool project will a wonderful illustrator.
The illustrations will be scanned and then imported into FCP for manipultion (panning, zooming, etc.) then adding narration and music.
Can somebody suggest the best timeline setting/pixel shape for doing this?
The images have been scanned at 150 dpi and have a size of 1920 x 1080
As I mentioned the images are still and I manipulate/move on them by using the size/motion tools in FCP
    Thanks for any advice.
    RIP Steve J
    A.S.

The images have been scanned at 150 dpi and have a size of 1920 x 1080
150 dpi doesn't really apply here (that's a print thang, directly related to inches), since you gave us the dimensions of 1920 x 1080, that's all we need. (technically you could have a file of 72 dpi be at 1920 x 1080, and it would still be the same save size in terms of pixels, though not in terms of inches)....
You mention zooming... what is the end use of the video? Strictly Internet? or Blu Ray? SD DVD? because as you probably know, HD video is 1920 x 1080, so zooming there may not be a good idea since you would start to show pixelation. So if you plan to have an HD sequence, your images should be scanned in a tad bit bigger (as much as you are zooming in, but not any bigger than FCP can actually handle).
And talking about panning/zooming, you'll end up with better results if you use Motion.
If you are doing something which is not meant for Broadcast, choose the Pro Res LT 1920 x 1080 30p preset. In the sequence settings you can change the fps to 30 exactly.

  • Canopus ADVC 300 & Tiger

After Installing Tiger on my G-5 I cannot get any video out through my Canops ADVC300. It worked fine with Panther. I am using Final Cut pro 5. with all the test I have tried it seems to be Tiger or Quiktime problem. I have posted on Final Cut forum with no luck. I have tried print to Video and Edit to Video. Capture is great just no export. Does anybody have a answer?

The Canopus unit may be toggled to analog-in mode; this would explain why you can capture but not print to video. Try toggling it to digital-in right before (or at the same time) as you initiate output to video from your G5.
I have often had to toggle my Canopus box by hitting its analog/digital button twice in succession to force it to change input modes (even when I thought it was already in digital input mode).

  • ADVC 300 and Final Cut Pro 7 Settings

I am capturing analog video into Final Cut Pro 7. Specifically, I am playing the S-VHS tapes in a JVC HR-S5902U vcr.  The vcr is connected to a Canopus ADVC 300.  The ADVC 300 which is connected via firewire to a Mac Pro equipped with a Black Magic Intensity Pro HDMI PCI Express Card.
My question is which of the following settings should I choose:
    1) Sequence Preset Setting?
    2) Capture Preset Setting?
    3) Device Control Preset?
    thanks

Also, are there any other suggestions or additional settings of which I should be aware in my converting situation?
    thanks again

  • Capturing Video 8 via Canopus SDVC-300

I am trying to capture some old Video 8 material. I'm using a Canopus ADVC-300 video converter to convert the analog video to DV. The have the Firewire output of the ADVC-300 connected to the Firewire input on my Mac. I have FCP set to: NTSC/DV 48 kHZ and Non-Controllable Device.
When I attempt to Capture Now, FCP says that there is no video.
I tested the output of the ADVC-300 by connecting it to a camcorder and there appears to be both video and audio.
The ADVC-300 was initially set to Unit. I set it to PC but then I believe I have to change device control to Firewire. I was able to begin capturing, again using Capture Now. But at one point FCP lost the time code and stopped capturing. I know the analog has no time code, but I'm not sure if the ADVC-300 is supplying time code?
If there is anyone who has used one of these successfully, please let me know what I'm doing wrong in my setup.

10,415 posts. Obviously not all bad.
    Thanks, it worked.
I'm not sure what the SW did, as I didn't change anything, simply installed it, ran it and quit. But it must have done something because it is working flawlessly now. (even handling the drop outs with no errors)
I didn't think there was timecode. But when I tried to capture the Firewire output of the analog source via the Sony GV-D200 not using non-controllable device, Capture Now would not capture anything, since it never saw any timecode.
With the ADVC-300 in place (and not their SW), it would not capture with non-controllable device with the unit's operation mode set to Unit. If I set it to PC, FCP Capture Now would work, but with a standard Firewire device setting. The source has some drop out, so it would stop capturing waiting on timecode. Which I thought was odd, since (as you stated) I didn't think there was any timecode. Unless the Canopus unit is attempting to create timecode? I wouldn't think so.
    Anyway, many thanks.

  • Still Images & Need to 'Scale to Sequence'-Vertical vs. Horizontal Picture

I make sequences from still images only. I need to start editing with all images at a Scale (in the Basic Motion section) of 100. When the original image is 720 width x 540 height (a picture taken horizontally), it appears in the timeline at a Basic Motion:Scale of 100 (this is what I want). However, when the original image is 405 width x 540 height (a picture taken vertically), it appears in the timeline at a Basic Motion:Scale of 112.5 and overflows the top and bottom of screen.
For these vertical images, I can then set the Scale manually, or use "Scale to Sequence" and get it to start at 100, but would like to avoid that extra step. Any ideas on how to have all imported images start at a Basic Motion:Scale of 100, whether taken vertically or horizontally?
Thanks, in advance, for giving this problem any thoughts.

I think that your best bet would be to
    1) make the images all the same size - adding black to the edges if necessary. You could add an alpha channel on the ones that you had to add black to the edges.
    or
    2) copy the motion settings from a still that is scaled correctly.
    or
    3) grin and bear it.
I created a file earlier this morning that FCP didn't scale, but now I can't duplicate it. All the files are getting scaled. According to the manual, FCP isn't supposed to scale past 100%, but they might have changed that with a revised version.
    Good luck!
