Cant manage to instal OSX to restored G5
I am currently in the middle of a G5 restoration project.
a little back story: I bought a non working G5 ppc of ebay and managed to bypass the issue of bad motherboard (three blinking led lights at startup) by swapping the whole motherboard out.
As the hard disk is new and formatted, i need to install OSX. The machine starts up without issues (chimes sound, loads up the apple logo) but im running on this error every time I try to install OSX (10.4.9 version).
any heads up on how to proceed?
additionally, i know I will have to run the fan calibration software, any ideas on where I can find that?

Then we can rule out HD directory damage as cause of the kernel panic, a common problem (Norton Disk Doctor and Speed Disk for the Mac are known to cause the kind of directory damage that can lead to kernel panics), and leaves us with either an incompatible DVD or, more likely, some serious hardware damage like a bad mother board, bad RAM, damaged HD, etc. An incompatible DVD would just not work but would not cause a Kernel Panic.
That will be hard to troubleshoot given the many variables and unknowns you're dealing with.

Unfortunately that is neither a serial number nor a Mac model number, so that doesn't help.
Even more unfortunately, the way to read the Mac's serial number reliably is through software, namely Apple's System Profiler, once you've booted up.

To upgrade to Mountain Lion you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Purchase and download Mountain Lion from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mountain Lion is $19.99 plus tax. The file is quite large, over 4 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.

To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
Open Disk Utility and verify the drive is partitioned using GUID and formatted Mac OS Extended, Journaled. If it is then do this:
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Now try installing Mountain Lion. -

Hi guys ive been trying all day to install osx 10 on my imac as i put a bigger hard drive in there and formated it useing the partition thing on the osx 10 disc after i do that i go to install but it wont pass the part where it asks where u want to install the software to but for some reason the hard drive is greyed out both my partitions are the same but i can instal mac os 9.2.1 with no problems any ideas as this is my first mac and i must say its a pain cause i cant use it at the moment

The problem you are experiencing is explained in the article Mac OS X: Disk Appears Dimmed (or "Grayed Out") in the Installer.
A couple of observations, if you don't mind. I note that you are trying to install OS X 10.0. I suggest that you don't even bother to install anything lesss than 10.2.2 or later. Earlier versions of OS X were essentially Beta versions, and will not perform as well. Your iMac will support up to Panther (10.3.9) natively, and with the help of XPostFacto you can install and run Tiger (10.4x). You can purchase universal installers from applerescue.
The 8 GB rule requires that you install OS X on the first 8 GB of the HDD. This can be a problem if you intend to use OS X for most of your computing needs, as you will have to have some things on a separate partition from your OS and Applications. Apparently there is a workaround that may enable you to install OS X on a larger partition. (Hold it, a minute guys!) Take a look at this thread to seek what I am talking about. Admittedly, the thread refers to a different computer, but if the WallStreet, why not an iMac?

My OS X 10.9 corrupted and i cleaned everything and installed ubuntu linux. I need clean install OSX again and i cant able to reach OS utility now. Please advise
You cannot use a Windows machine.
No idea if this will work because you have/had Ubuntu installed - hit Command + Option + R keys while restarting/booting up. Once in the Utilities, make sure the drive is formatted correctly and erase it, then reinstall the OS. -

Can't manage to install Windows using Bootcamp
For some reason I can't manage to install Windows 7 using bootcamp. It paritions the disk, pop in the Windows installation DVD and restart.
The Macbook Pro takes a while to startup (it stays on the grey screen for a while). After a while of waiting, it goes to a black screen with a white blinking thingy on the top left of the screen. Here is where it gets stuck... I've tried to leave it like that for 30 minutes or so, but it just keeps blinking.
I tried holding the option key at startup and boot into the disc, but it does the same thing. I'm using a original Windows 7 DVD. I tried a XP CD also, no go.
I'm using an early 2008 Macbook Pro (2.4Ghz) with Snow Leopard.
Anyone can help?Having this exact issue after getting my (Early 2008 24", 3.06GHz, 8800GS) iMac back from having it's stock drive replaced by Apple.
Prior to the drive replacement, it had a stock 500GB drive, and dual-booted 10.6/XP Pro flawlessly. Then the drive died. After running it off an external for a month, I brought it in for service.
Apple replaced it with a 640GB, as apparently they don't stock the 500GB disks anymore.
10.6 works fine.
Applied updates, restored my home directory and apps from the external, no problems.
Ran BootCamp Assistant, made a 120GB partition. Inserted the same XP CD I've used before. Reboot...black screen, flashing cursor. Waited 30 min for it to pick up, nada. Rebooted, held down Option, picked the disc - same deal.
Rebooted into 10.6, checked the disc was readable. No problem. Tried starting an install in VMware from the disc. No problem. Tried the disc in my MBP. No problem, boots like a charm. Highly skeptical the CD is the issue.
Re-ran BootCamp Assistant, merged the partition back into the 10.6 one. Rebooted from my 10.6 install disc, ran Disk Utility's Repair over the internal disc - no errors found. Repaired permissions to be safe (found a couple minor things in my home directory). Rebooted into 10.6 and ran BootCamp Assistant again, this time with a 32GB partition. Same problem.
Rebooted from the 10.6 install media, wiped out the partitions, laid a new, fresh OSX install on the internal. Booted, ran updates, then BootCamp Assistant (did not copy any of my data back this time, nor did I install anything other than the OS and updates). Same problem.
Shut down completely, unplugged for 5 min or so (reset SMC). Booted, clearing PRAM. Booted into 10.6, re-merged the partitions. Rebooted, clearing PRAM again. Booted into 10.6, ran BootCamp Assistant to create the partition. Rebooted, clearing PRAM yet again. Removed all peripherals save the keyboard/mouse. Tried to boot from the Windows CD - same problem.
Dug out my WIn7RC1 DVD for kicks. Same problem through similar iterations. This disc also boots fine on the MBP, and can start a VMware installation without issue.
As we speak, I'm booted from the 10.6 installation media once more, this time zeroing out the internal disc entirely. If this doesn't work, I'm not sure where to go next. -
Can't repair fusion drive/install OSX
I have an imac with apple installed fusion drive.
I was having problems so decided to wipe the drive and reinstall mavericks.
I booted into recovery mode and erased the drive, then chose install osx.
the download started and got to the end then an error message appeared saying could not install.
I tried same process again to no avail.
I went back into drive until and checked recovery partition and hd, both verified ok, but when I clicked on the top level (both drives joined) it said the drive needed repair. I ran the repair at this level but kept getting a repeated message to repair drive.
I did a restart into recovery again, but this time it took me to internet recovery?
I tried installing osx from this point but it wasn't offering mavericks, but mountain lion. This also failed.
I tried erasing the disk but this failed saying it couldn't unmount.
I also tried to restore from time machine, which also failed!
So I'm big time stuck, anyone got a suggestion please?
THanksSince posting this I have managed somehow to get the drive working again.
I think i did it by breaking the link between the SSD and HDD, then used disk utils to repair the problem and join them back. -
Tried to install OSX Mavericks now MBP won't load
Hi all
Last night I tried to install OSX Mavericks on my MBP mid-2010 running Mountain Lion. It downloaded fine and then seemed to install fine. When the message came up saying it was going to restart automatically the spinning wheel hanged, which was the first problem. I switched off the MBP and turned it on again. It now refuses to boot up and stays on the Apple bootup screen with the spinning wheel.
I've tried to restart in recovery mode but this doesn't seem to work. It just goes back to the spinning wheel and there is no progress bar that pops up to indicate the recovery data is being downloaded from the net (I don't have a recovery partition).
I have a backup external hard drive that I can use to restore my MBP and then try upgrading again, but I can't use that until I get into recovery mode.
Is anyone able to help?
ThanksOk so I worked out how to get into recovery mode. Turns out I was doing it wrong! I used an external USB drive to access recovery mode.
I ran disk utility which identified and fixed some errors on the HD. I thought this might solve the problem but when I restarted the same problem occurred. I then restored my time machine backup which thankfully worked.
I tried installing mavericks again! Upon restarting and completing the install, I got the message 'OSX has been installed. Your computer will now restart'. After the countdown had finished I got the beach ball which span eternally again, just like last time. After about 10 mins I did a hard reset and again OSX won't load.

Hi, i have a macbook pro version 10.6.8 with boot camp version 3.0.4. I managed to install windows 7 professional x64 bits but however when i tried to install the drivers using the OSX MAC CD using boot camp, it prompt me boot camp x 64 is unsupported with this computer model. Then i tried the method by right click the bootcamp x64 and managed to install the drivers. However, i still couldnt manage access the internet and it prompts me no networking hardware detected...Any idea how can i solve it?
P.S i tried updating my bootcamp version 3.0.4 in mac os with bootcamp x64 version 3.1 exe but it shows me weird wording..

Trying to install OSX.4 sys stalls when booting from dvd
I've read many of the discussions on this topic. Some are close but none are exactly like the problem I am encountering. I have a Power Mac G4 that was running OS9.2 and I've been trying to install OSX.4. I've tried every possible combination of starting from the dvd but it dones the same thing at the same point everytime. It restarts from the disk, I get the gray screen with the apple logo and the spinning wheel. It will run like this for about a minute or two and then freeze. I can't force quit and I have to restart. I thought it needed a firmware update so I checked the links (I had seen on some of the posts) but it looks like it's a machine that doesn't need one. But I'm not 100% sure how to tell.
I then went back and started with OSX and OSX.2 and they installed fine. I thought it would have to be installed progressively. But I still have the same issue. I am doing an erase and install with each upgrade. The software is a full retail version for each upgrade as well. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Be aware that you can only use an external firewire disk as boot volume since USB is not a bootable interface with MacOS X on PPC-based computers.
The message you receive is o.k. Insert the Install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. This will boot you directly from the CD to the installer application. Once you selected the language, select disk utility from the MENU, select your External drive and format it as "Apple Extended (Journaled)".
Quit disk utility and proceed with the installation. Make sure you select the external drive as destination!
When you have to reboot you will boot to the internal disk again. That's o.k. Open disk utility and repair the external disk and also permissions on the external. Next download and install the Mac OS X Update 10.3.9 (Combo). (you are still booted from the internal hard disk, so you will not be prompted for a restart).
Now restart and hold down the Option-key during boot. In the boot-manager you can select the external disk as boot volume. If your computer booted o.k. you made it! Just remember to Repair permissions before and after an update!

Re-installed osx now iPhone see's iTunes as a "new" computer and wont sync

I had a critical hard drive failure and had not backed up my data.
After a clean install of osx on the same computer with the same hardware, I updated itunes to the latest version. (all fine so far).
before the new install I had sync'd my iPhone and sync'd the iTunes account, music, videos etc to my iPhone.
Now when I try and sync the iPhone I get a message telling me that I can either "cancel" or wipe the iphone and sync from scratch because the "library" is on a new computer !
arrgghh... it's the same box same everything. I even used the same name to re-install osx on my iMac but the iphone and itunes still see's the itunes library as a different computer and wont let me sync without wiping the iphone of all it's data which I cant do. It's all I have left out of about $800 dollars worth of purchased music and stuff. Everything else was lost when I had to wipe the hard drive clean on the iMac!

I just want to be able to sync my iPhone with iTunes so I can a) get some of my music & stuff back and b) update my apple account details and c) start sync'ing my iPhone again without worrying about wiping it out !*it's the same box same everything. It's the same computer but not the same iTunes library, as you've said in your post the original library was erased. Your iPhone was linked to your previous library, it's not linked to the computer. I presume that all your songs etc. were also erased since you haven't mentioned a back-up anywhere.

For everything else (including purchases) there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod Touch or iPhone. Is there any way of installing OSX 10.7 or 10.8 on a reformatted hard drive of a macbook pro 13 inch late 2009 that originally came with Leopard (OSX 10.5). I have just bought a macbook pro i5 and once all the data was transferred to the newer macbook I reformatted the hard drive of the old MBP in the xpectation that I could simply reinstall Lion. The recovery disc starts up ok, but curiously the installer points to mountain lion only and I keep getting a dialogue box informing me that my apple Id has not previously bought Lion (not Mountainlion, Lion). For starters that is untrue, I bought Lion on the app store to upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion on the original macbook and that shows up in the previous purchases screen in the App store application. Annoyingly this whole process does not allow me to re-purchase Lion on the old macbook pro and I am also now unable to restore the system from Timemachine as this now appears to be associated with the newer machine. And yes, you guessed it, I no longer have the original installation CDs, not realizing that I would still need these after upgrading the operating system (twice).
Attempts to start up from the only disc that I do have (snowleopard) results in hopeful crunching of the optical drive followed by a grey screen descending across the monitor followed by the message that I must restart the computer and then this process starts again, so getting nowhere and frustration mounting.
I am now left with a machine that is clinically dead with otherwise perfectly functioning hardware
I would be most grateful for any advice.

(based in UK)Purchase the white Snow Leopard 10.6.3 disks Apple sells on their online store.
Follow these directions, you need to zero erase the ENTIRE drive of the older Mac. (important!)
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
If you don't, the 10.8 RecoveryHD partition will remain and the 10.6 install disk can't repair the 10.8 drive later if there is a issue. There likely also will be a problem installing Lion, as the Recovery HD will be 10.8.
If you install Lion, it will create it's own Recovery HD for it.
Once your up, Software Update until 10.6.8, then you can log into AppStore and install Lion if you have already purchased it, or call Apple and special order it, because AppStore goes to 10.8 from 10.6.8 supposedly now.
You then can reinstall iLife from the 10.5 disks by running the installer or using Paficist from Charlessoft.
Just to let you know, you cannot sell the machine with 10.7 or 10.8 on it because the next owner needs your AppleID to reinstall or update the OS. 10.7 or 10.8.
So if your selling it, just install 10.6.3 and press the power button down, it will reboot to the Welcome Video for the next owner. -
How do I Install OSX to an External Drive Partition?
I have an external FW800 drive that I've made two partitions on. One partition I want to install OSX to, for external booting; the other partition is just for storage. I'm trying to use the SNL install disk but It's not installing, it just stalls out. I must be doing something wrong.

Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but should be used on a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Complete the OS X installation.
Or you can clone your current system to the partition:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
Select the destination volume from the left side list.
Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
Check the box labeled Erase destination.
Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the external drive. Source means the internal startup drive.
