Canvas rotation

Canvas rotation isn't supported by a couple of new CS5 features.
The physically simulated brushes' tilt direction is ignored by canvas rotation.  The cursor displays correctly, but the paint is applied as if the canvas hasn't been rotated.
If I rotate the canvas 90° clockwise, than press down while the back of my stylus is pointed towards me, so the cursor looks like /\ (flat point brush) , the paint goes down like >.
Scrubby Zoom just zooms in and out of the center of a rotated canvas.
On a positive note, a bug was fixed that allowed the canvas to snap its rotation to either 0° or 360°

Not sure what you are describing. Works for me - the brushes are correctly aligned with screen space and thus show the expected behavior even when the canvas is rotated and scrubby zoom also correctly works in screen space, meaning the pivot is the screen center, not the canvas. Of course when the canvas is perfectly centered, they are identical, so you won't see nay difference, but as soon as you move the canvas, you do.

  • How do I get OpenGL? (for canvas rotation)

I've tried using the rotate canvas feature in Photoshop CS5 but I get the message: "Could not complete your request because it only works with OpenGL enabled document windows."  I can't use rotate canvas using my Wacom tablet either, which is weird because I used to be able to do that a few months ago.  I'm assuming something changed with the program- my sister probably updated it or did something.
So, how can I fix this problem?  My guess is I'll have to get this OpenGL thing but I have no idea what it is.

Help > System Info will tell you if you have OpenGL and what version it is. 2.0 is the minimum.
Edit > Preferences > Performance > Graphics Processor should be checked on. If so, look at the Advanced settings and try "Basic" or "Normal."
If not, go to your video card manufacter's website and download the latest drivers for your videocard and see if that works.

  • Why Non fluid canvas rotation (wacom tablet with touch gestures)

    Hello!
I just got photoshop at home, and i am using it with my wacom intuos touch tablet on windows 8.1.
I notice that when i use my fingers to rotate, zoom and pan, i am not getting the behavior that was announced on this video:
Microsoft Surface Pro 3 - Launch Full Event - Tuesday, May. 20 - YouTube
More precisely, the behavior of the 2 fingers tap to reset the view does not happen with my tablet.
Also, the whole thing is really not fluid, especially the rotations.
Though, when i am using the rotate view tool to rotate, it is totally fluid.
Similarly, when i pan with the hand tool, the movement is also fluid.
Why such a difference? What am i missing?
    Thanks in advance!
    Config:
    I7-4770, 3.4 ghz
    16gb Ram
    Nvidia Geforce Gtx 760

Is there a possibility that this feature only works with the touch system of the Microsoft Surface, and not with the touch surface of the wacom tablet?

  • Canvas rotation is not fluid with wacom gestures

When i use the 2 fingers gesture of my wacom tablet in photoshop to rotate and pan, the process is really not fluid
But when i use the rotate tool of photoshop, this one is fast and fluid.
    Why such a difference?
I work on photoshop CC, windows 8.1, intuos pro multitouch
I have one of the latest i7 processor, 16 go of ram and a nvidia gtx 760, working on a little image (no crazy HD)
Everything is by default in photoshop, apart from certain shortcuts
Also, is it not possible to assign some gestures to certain behaviours?
For example i was wanting to have a pinch gestures reseting my rotation to zero and fitting my image to screen, but i don't know how to set this :s
I wish Photoshop would be a tad more intuitive to setup the workspace.
    Thank you in advance =)

  • Rotation of the Canvas?

Which versions of Photoshop Elements does support the Canvas Rotation tool? (If there is no PE that does support the tool, would anyone like to recommend me to another product from Adobe that 'does' support it?) A reason I ask this, is because I am a graphics tablet user and it has come to my attention that most others I know who use other arty programs to design their graphic web comics. Have some form of canvas rotational tool. Which makes things ten times more easier for the traditional artist to do their work no doubt. But another reason I want to know is because I have been sticking with Photoshop Elements 8.0 since... For like... Forever at least. And yet- I feel so compelled that its about time I took what was my PE 8.0. And then leap towards the PE 13 upgrade.

No version of photoshop elements has the Rotate View Tool, which rotates the canvas in a non destructive temporary way.
The current versions of photoshop that adobe has are photoshop cs6 and photoshop cc 2014, both of which have the Rotate View Tool.

  • Make Brush preset doesn't match canvas angle

    Hello!
I'm running a demo version of Photoshop Cs 5 on my brand spanking new Macbook pro 2.3 ghz with 8gb of ramalama.
I work on comics and I create a lot of preset brushes as I go, using an action script.  I'll draw a path, and the script witll fill that path with black, make the path a selection and turn it into a brush preset.
Problem is, when I have the canvas rotated, and I make a brush preset, the new brush is not matching the angle the canvas is CURRENTLY rotated at.
For example, if I've rotated the canvas 45 degress clockwise, and create a brush, the brush will be 45 degress sounter clockwise to what I intended.
This is NOT the way CS 4 worked.
    Any thoughts?

    weird new info:
let me try to calrify again, cuz I know it's odd and difficult to visualize:
lets say im drawing a face and i want to add some feather using a brush pattern:
I create the shape, fill it with black and choose make brush, but it will create the brush canted at the angle in relation to the canvas at zero degress rotation.
Above is my canvas set at zero degrees.  All is well.
Above, I've rotated the canvas and used the lasso tool to draw a shape.
Now Ive filled it with black and makingit a brush  preset.
In the last image, you can see that the created brush preset was generated as if it had been created at 0 degress to the canvas instead of in relation to the screen!  WTF indeed!

  • Regular (not art) brush "ghost" cursor rotation

This feature has actually been requested and discussed elsewhere in the Photoshop forums, but it's worth mentioning again, one, and two, I don't think it's utility has been fully explained.
Chris Cox, who works for Adobe, explained that OS mouse cursor limitations make this feature dififcult to impliment properly. I don't understand the issue well enough to comment, but I can't see why the OPTION shouldn't exist (even if it slows the cursor dramatically).
I frequently use custom brushes for texture and collage work (say, ink splatter brushes or leaves or whatever). You can get a lot more life out of a brush if it can be rotated, so that the textures don't look repetitive.
But here's the key thing -- it's VERY important that you can see the angle of the brush -- a leaf, say, may have a rounded bottom and pointy tips. If you're using it as an eraser to create a jagged edge, for example, you need to know that the pointy tip is facing the correct side. Doing this blind is obviously a chore. What's more, the cursor doesn't need to be especially responsive as I'm basically just stamping with the brush, rather than fluidly painting with it.
I have to imagine that the already existing OpenGL support could help greatly here. I mean, if realtime canvas rotation is possible, rotation a cursor ghost shouldn't be THAT hard, right?
P.S. Corel Painter doesn't exactly do this well either (with custom "capture dabs"), so the feature would be an way for Photoshop to jump further ahead.

Thanks for the response -- I agree that in general responsiveness does matter. What I was saying is that if cursor lag is an insurmountable problem, leaving it as an option would still be helpful as there are many times when even a sluggish (but accurate) cursor ghost would be of immense help.
You could also come up with a hybrid solution. Create a static brush cursor outline (as exists now), but create an option to superimpose an arrow over it that indicates rotation direction. While not perfect, I imagine my brain would grow used to it pretty quickly.
I realize that these features are harder to impliment than they sound, and that Photoshop's primary audience is Photographers, not painters, so I appreciate Adobe's willingness to at least consider the feature.

  • Does rotating an image several times affect the quality?

I'm using a template for a cd sleeve. One half of it is upside down so to work on the other half I have to rotate the image. I will have to rotate the image a hundred times before the project is finished.
Does this affect the quality? If so, any workarounds for me?
    Thank you.

As the previous poster said - use non-destructive transform methods wherever you can. Apart from that, note, that rotating in multiples of 90 degrees does not change the pixels' color and transparency information, as this always coincides with the imaginary rectangular/ square pixel grid and pixels only get re-arranged. Only rotations at different angles will enforce resampling, meaning that in particular edges will be recalculated to keep them visually smooth. Doing this multiple times will result in softening, as the way Photoshop works, it has no knowledge of previous transforms and will apply the full sampling again in a "dumb" manner. Smart objects avoid that limitation, as they concatenate operations, i.e. a rotation of +60 degrees followed by one -20 degrees will be treated as a single 40 degree rotation. Likewise, CS4's canvas rotation, is merely a secondary rotation applied to the screen buffer, not affecting the image itself.

  • How to set settings to do 'right' thing by default, than default to 'wrong things...?

(How vague a title can i come up wth)...
Well it could apply to more than one situation, which is why I left it a bit(!) open...
Specifically, I find one of the reasons my current file has grown from a 60MB file to a 2.5GB file, is my use of gradients and fills in shapes.  By default, when I create a layer,
I press control-N, then draw a shape, bind the vector to the layer, then fill it with a gradient.  Trouble is, they aren't 'gradient layers', they are gradients ON layers...and there
doesn't seem to be any easy way to convert from one to the other...
And why would I care?  ... well my picture is 4.5Kpx^2, if it is a gradient on a layer, then it's a 80MB/layer image of a gradient.  (OUCH), vs. a gradient layer, that is just
a formula with the gradient. (<1K,). Compressed they seem to take around 20MB on disk...so, from that, you can see I've added about 120 of those layers to the file.... each
layer, a small faction of the orignal image, yet taking almost as much as the original!...
So it would be convenient if when I create a layer, it could do the right thing to begin with.  Problem is -- when I hve tried to create a gradient layer, the program doesn't let me create the gradient -- I can only use a predefined gradient.   Which is awkward to say the least!...
So this is related to the same problem I'm trying to find a work-around for (though it would addresss other simlar problems in the various other tools)...
If I had the control when creating the gradient for it to take it's rotation from the line I drew...  As long as I am only drawing gradients, it can copy the formula and direction of each and apply/store them as the layer's 'gradient' forumula...?

    That is what I do.
But I'd want it to create the gradient layer, blank to begin with.  My process wasn't aligned with the requirements...but I usually like to go delete the layer mask 1st, and then I need to make sure the newly created gradient layer is below the old layer so I can pick off the colors from the old layer.   then I can go back into the gradient fill as you show above to create the gradient.
What is very NOT intuitive,  is DIRECTION on the gradient.   On a normal layer, it's pretty accurate, go from point a to point b.
But trying to duplicate that accuracy -- the agle from that tiny little circle, , and then trying to find the 'edge of the graident and where it lines up with the layer you see....
All those are trial and error...
What Horribly threw me off was I was used to working with the canvas rotated for the area I was in....
The rotated canvas isn't integrated into hardly any of the tools -- they all still have their x-y aligned on what is a "skewed sight line" for one looking
    at a rotated canvas.
Ideally, the tool coordinates would be relative to the view (or toggleable between absolute and relative as some might prefer the other...)...
But trying to figure out the gradient directly when your canvas is rotated... isn't exactly *obvious*, nor simple.   Doable, yes, but not very easily...

  • Questions regarding customisation/configuration of PS CS4

    Hello
I have accumulated a list of questions regarding customising certain things in Photoshop. I don't know if these things are doable and if so, how.
Can I make it so that the list of blending options for a layer is by default collapsed when you first apply any options?
Can I make it possible to move the canvas even though I'm not zoomed in enough to only have parts of it visible on my screen?
Is it possible to enable a canvas rotate shortcut, similar to the way you can Alt+RightClick to quickly change brush size?
Is it possible to lock button positions? Sometimes I accidentally drag them around when I meant to click.
Is it possible to lock panel sizes? For example, if I have the Navigator and the Layers panels vertically in the same group, can I lock the height of the navigator so that I don't have to re-adjust it all the time? Many panels have a minimum height so I guess what I am asking for is if it's possible to set a maximum height as well.
Is it possible to disable Photoshop from automatically appending "copy" at the end of layer/folder names when I duplicate them?
These are things I'd really like to change to my liking as they are problems I run into on a daily basis.
I hope someone can provide some nice solutions

    2.  No.  It's a sore spot that got some forum time when Photoshop CS4 was first released, then again with CS5.  It's said that the rules change slightly when using full-screen mode, though I personally haven't tried it.
    3.  Not sure, since I haven't tried it.  However, you may want to explore the Edit - Keyboard Shortcuts... menu, if you haven't already.
    4.  What buttons are you talking about?  Those you are creating in your document?  If so, choose the layer you want to lock in the LAYERS panel, then look at the little buttons just above the listing of the layers:
    5.  There are many, many options for positioning and sizing panels.  Most start with making a panel visible, then dragging it somewhere by its little tab.  One of the important features is that you can save your preferred layout as a named workspace.  Choose the Window - Workspace - New Workspace... to create a new named workspace (or to update one you've already created).  The name of that menu is a little confusing.  Once you have created your workspace, if something gets out of place, choose Window - Workspace - Reset YourNamedWorkspace to bring it back to what was saved.
You'll find that panels like to "stick together", which helps with arranging them outside of the Photoshop main window.
As an example, I use two monitors, and this is my preferred layout:
    6.  No, it's not possible to affect the layer names Photoshop generates, as far as I know.  I have gotten in the habit of immediately naming them per their usage, so that I don't confuse myself (something that's getting easier and easier to do...).
    Hope this helps!

  • CS6 Beta first impressions

Here is a list of things I noticed during a first test drive of the Photoshop CS6 Beta. This is a mixture of feature requests, bug reports and general observations. I just typed this up as I went along. I'm sorry I don't have enough time to file proper bug reports and feature requests, but I though this might still be useful feedback. These things are in no particular order (well, except in the order I noticed them), and I'm sure there are a quite a few grammar/spelling errors, but right now that's all the time I can invest, sorry.
And even though this all sounds really negative (I basically just listed the annoying points since a list of good thigs probably isn't very useful), I am quite happy with the new version, congratulations to the team! I love the cat graphic on the splash screen by the way.
All these things were tested on a MacBook (2008 I think) with OS X Snow Leopard and 8 GB of RAM. So here you go:
Ctrl+Some Key still not available as shortcuts (e.g. Cmd+H Hide Photoshop, Ctrl+H Hide Extras)
The aesthetic merit of the font choice in the about box/splash screen is debatable
Despite all the vector enhancements, Spacebar+drag still doesn't work in the Pen tool like it does in other Adobe applications
Paragraph and Character style definitions apparently cannot be shared with InDesign or Illustrator so far. There is no way to link to external style definition files, and no way to import or export. Since all these applications use the same text engine, this seems like a missed opportunity, requiring a lot of duplicate work on the user's part (not as much as in previous versions, though)
The title bar of the document window uses the system title bar and thus does not match the overall interface skin. If that is set to dark (which is the default), it calls attention to itself.
There is no way to hide the filter bar in the layers panel, making it waste screen space on laptop screens when it is not needed.
The Warp option in Free Transform was updated to add GPU acceleration, which is great. That would have been a perfect opportunity to make the number of subdivisions user-adjustable.
There are lots of new vector features. This would have been a perfect opportunity to integrate After Effects' mask and shape system (including effects like repeaters), resulting in increased compatibility for importing Photoshop files into AE. Besides, all enhancements would pay off double since two applications would benefit from them. That would also have added the option to feather vector shapes for use as soft vector masks (Photoshop's mask feather function seems to perform a blur and thus is significantly slower, plus it applies globally to all paths in the mask). Still, the vector features are very well implemented, even though Fireworks still seems to have a slight edge.
The red "active" indicator on the layers panel filter bar calls attention to itself. The entire application uses grayscale icons. While I can see why this indicator needs to be obvious, I think that is too much.
The "Scripted Pattern" function is not very intuitive to use without any kind of preview. Also, it is not really clear how to create your own scripts, edit the existing ones or even just adjust parameters.
The Fill dialog in general takes too many clicks with that popup menu. Using icons or something similar would save a lot of mouse miles/clicks.
There is still no way to directly load 50% gray as the foreground/background color. In photo retouching etc., this comes up a lot. Adding a little icon to the color picker in the toolbox with the ability to assign a shortcut would help a lot. Waiting for this since version 5 or so...
Curves still doesn't support editing the layer's alpha channel nor LAB mode (at least not without converting the entire document to LAB mode or a smart object).
The "File Info" is still the ugly inefficient Flash monster where everything takes ten times as long to do than it did with the old dialog it replaced a few versions back (mouse wheel doesn't work on tabs, text editing shortcuts are different/don't work, tabs instead of the InDesign-like list of categories and many more). Photomerge is still ugly, but at least it doesn't have such major usability issues. The interface is inconsistent enough already, why do these have to be Flash?!
Shift key during canvas rotation to constrain angles still only works when using the tool but is ignored when using a multitouch pad gesture
The minimum size on the new "Adjustments" panel is larger than necessary
There still seems to be no option to not hide all panels when activating another application, causing that visual jump and slight desorientation every time
That new pen tool cursor is huge
There are still no Lightroom-like info bubbles or indicator icons (like LR's process version upgrade warning) for entering Quick Mask, toggling Softproofing etc. that would alert the user when accidental keystrokes
Photoshop doesn't seem to ask the user to automatically migrate settings and presets from any previous version on first launch. The migrate presets function does nothing (don't know if this is an issue related to the computer I am testing this on).
The "Blend RGB Colors using Gamma" feature in the color management settings still seems to be global and not per document (not 100% sure, though). This results in files being displayed differently on different computers, which is not a good idea.
The line-based warping in "Adaptive Wide Angle" is only available within that filter as far as I can tell. This is a missed opportunity IMO. Being able to specify arbitrary source and destination paths to that algorithm would make for a very powerful warping tool.
I'm not exactly sure what caused it, but I managed to accidentally disable path anti-aliasing and I can't seem to find a way to switch it on again. No combinations in the GPU preferences under "Performance", including switching GPU acceleration off completely, restored it. This is either a bug or a usability problem. Personally, I think the option to antialias paths and guides should be located in the View menu, not hidden in the GPU preferences.
In the settings for a LUT adjustment layer, clicking any of the radio buttons will automatically pop up a file selection dialog, even if my intention was to use one of the presets. That file selection dialog also gives me no clue which file formats are supported (i.e the regular format popup is missing).
Both Cmd+Space and the zoom tool itself now seem to behave identically. There is no more way to drag a box, except to switch off "Scrubby Zoom" altogether. Using both methods in parallel (as I would prefer) is unfortunately no longer possible as far as I can tell.
The brush cursor in Liquify is always dark, making it hard to see on black surfaces for instance. "Advanced Mode" is also off by default. Since the entire thing is in a huge dialog box (a solution like Blur Gallery's interface would seem like a better way to do this by the way), there is no real benefit to hiding these controls since there are no UI elements that would benefit from the additional space. It just requires an additional click.
The Liquify preview flickers as I am typing this in a TextEdit window that is floating above it
Select > Color Range would benefit from buttons with icons for preview mode instead of a dropdown. Same for Curves (tabs would probably be best in that case, but at least we have the shortcuts for now)
The "Sample all Layers" option vanishes when switching the Patch tool from "Content Aware" to "Normal"
That's it for now, thanks for listening.

@Chris Cox: I didn't mean post professionals who probably answered your surveys, but cinematographers and the like who currently simply deliver JPEGs of their desired look as far as I know, not colorists and effects artists using Photoshop to generate their look. But I'm no expert on those workflows, and I completely agree, a third party solution for LUT export is probably the best way to implement such a workflow.
@c.pfaffenbichler: Most professionals are still working predominantly in a semi-destructive way (i.e. using layers). Smart objects are too much hassle for most things (especially not being able to see your changes in context when editing them), so keeping an original layer and re-applying a filter is still very common.
Seeing that Blur Gallery can export a channel, that actually makes it quite useful, contrary to my initial assessment. Even though the interface is currently not optimized for this, it looks like Blur Gallery is a great quick and easy way to generate layer masks for color corrections.
@TLL..: Professionals will always buy their software. And those people who don't won't make that decision dependent on the licensing model. Very few of those who pirate programs are actually lost customers who don't buy software because they found a way can get it for free. It just doesn't work that way even though many companies would like to think it does. Most people simply wouldn't buy the software if piracy was not an option, with price being the deciding factor. The question is simply how spread-out the transition area inbetween is. I don't have Adobe's research data, though, so I can't comment on their specific case (I'd guess Photoshop is one of the most pirated programs, though), but I don't think threatening them with piracy is going to be that effective, they probably have someone who does nothing else all day than figure out smart ways to optimize these kinds of things for maximum profit
Just as a side note, in some cases piracy actually works in a company's favor. Microsoft owed much of its market dominance in their early days to the fact that unlike the competition their software was not copy protected and thus became much more widely used than comparable solutions, leading to much higher sales than copy protection could ever have given them.
Don't get me wrong, I am in no way defending piracy here, of course, I just think it's interesting from a strategic perspective. On the other hand, Photoshop is quite well known and doesn't have any real competition, so that probably defeats my point. Anyway, moving on.
I had a chance to play with the Beta again today for about an hour, and here are a few more things I found (again, a mixture of bugs, features I had hoped for, quirks etc. that I noticed and jotted down as I went along):
The new in-place/on-canvas filters like Blur Gallery use an OK/Cancel button combination to exit the semi-modal state, which is inconsistent with all the existing semi-modal tools like Crop and Free Transform (which continue to use the checkmark system).
Panel groups can no longer be collapsed by double clicking in the free area next to the tabs, only the tabs themselves. Not sure if that is intended behavior or a bug.
Most panels seem to be docked below the Brushes panel by default for some reason so that showing any of these panels will also automatically bring up the much larger Brushes panel.
ExtendScript Toolkit always crashes when switching to the "Fonts and Colors" tab in Preferences. This behavior can be reproduced every time. Unless this is related to a specific configuration, I can't imagine how this could have slipped through during QA/internal testing.
There is currently no documentation for the APIs for the new Deco patterns, at least I was not able to find any, but I guess this is going to change in the release build.
The Displace filter is still stuck in the early nineties (no preview, not accepting channels but using separate map files etc.). Displace is one of the most used filters in photo post production and image compositing.
When placing files, it is never made 100% clear to the user which files/file types are linked to and which ones are embedded. An option to choose and possibly even a links panel like in InDesign and Illustrator would be useful.
For placed videos (which seem to be linked to rather than embedded), the link seems to consist of just an absolute path (heard about this problem somewhere else, didn't have a chance to verify). I'd suggest storing both relative and absolute paths and if one fails to match, try the other before requesting a manual relink.
The properties panel displays an unnecessary vertical scrollbar for Curves adjustment layers that just scrolls down to some empty space below
The Timeline panel flyout menu has lost the "Document Settings" command. There now seems to be no reasonably obvious way to set the overall animation duration. There is also no "Trim Animation to Work Area" command. New layers seem to always use some kind of default duration, not the duration of the current timeline sequence.
The segments in the animation timeline are a very vibrant color (at least on a wide gamut monitor). Ideally, they should at least match the color palette established by the blue selection highlight color, the ok buttons in the options bar and the render progress bar (which I really like). Strongly colored UI elements affect the perception of color in the image. Autodesk Smoke/Flame does a great job of using a non-obtrusive color palette in its interface.
The "Set Current Time" dialog box that pops up when double-clicking the timecode display in the bottom area of the Timeline panel does not support pressing the escape key to cancel if the text field has the focus. Pressing Tab doesn't seem to change the focus either. Pressing down on the OK button, holding and dragging out of it doesn't hide the selection in the text field, but the escape key now works as expected. The return key works as expected in all situations, no matter which control has the focus.
The "Split Clip" button doesn't seem to work well with the undo system. The corresponding menu bar item (Edit > Undo Split Clip) is sometimes grayed out. Switching to another application and back to Photoshop seems to re-enable the menu item in some cases. The grayed-out menu item obviously also blocks out the use of the corresponding hotkey (Cmd+Z in the default configuration).
Dragging transitions to clips sometimes has no effect. I can't give a specific combination of things that cause this behavior, but it seems to be a per-document issue. If it kicks in, transition dragging doesn't work at all, i.e. it is always all segments in a particular timeline that don't accept transitions, not just individual ones. The dragging process happens as expected, but basically, the segments don't highlight under the mouse, nor do they accept the transition.
Keyframe interpolations are limited to "Linear" and "Hold". A minimalistic "Smooth" option would be really useful, and it wouldn't have a noticeable impact on the complexity of the video timeline feature for novice users. I'm no AE expert, but I believe it has a feature called "Easy easy" keyframes, too, giving you smooth interpolation without manually adjusting the bézier animation curves.
The horizontal scroll bar on the Timeline panel always shows some extra empty space, like the Properties panel for Curves. There is also no obvious "Zoom Timeline to Fit All" function (a toggle between 100% and the last zoom position would make sense, I think this is also how Avid implemented it in Media Composer).
3D layer rendering still isn't really a background thread and almost all interactions with the applications cancel the render operation.
Vector shapes unfortunately only support plain vector outline strokes instead of allowing the user to apply any of the brush presets (or even use any of the settings inside the "Stroke Path" command, which would enable things like smearing using vector shapes). In my opinion, that is really the missed opportunity for additional usefulness that vector support in a pixel-based application can offer. I know the vector shapes feature is aimed at designers who don't want to switch between Photoshop and Illustrator for every single vector task, but that would have been a way to make that feature much more relevant for more than just the screen design demographic.
The beta doesn't ship with the Pixel Bender filter, which I hope is going to change with the final build. That filter needs some work compared to CS5 (supporting the AE user control fields, supporting high-resolution images at least in CPU mode, channels as input images, color management issues, etc.) The CS5 release still feels very much like Alpha software (Pixel Bender Toolkit is even worse).
The 3D camera has no on-screen widget to specify depth of field distance settings or even locking them to an object (similar to an aimed camera in compositing programs and 3D software). The sliders are also sometimes quite laggy, ideally all sliders should be completely interactive with only the render lagging behind. A slider that sticks jumps around while the software is rendering can be quite frustrating for a user (Lightroom has had that problem for a long time).
The "Sketch" render presets seem to give incorrect results (i.e. results that have nothing to do with the 3D object, just a bunch of semi-random shapes and rectangles. The render button is also completely disabled. There also seems to be no way to activate the "Sketch" setting except through the presets.
The fact that Content Aware Move allows the user to change the Adaptation setting after the fact is not very discoverable and inconsistent with both the other tools and apparently even the behavior of the Mode setting on the same tool. I'd suggest giving the tool a pseudo-modal state like the crop and free transform tools instead.
The lorem ipsum command is called "Paste Lorem Ipsum". The use of the term "Paste" here is potentially confusing since it has nothing to do with the system clipboard. "Insert" would be a better choice of words in my opinion. Also, the same command inside InDesign is called "Fill with Placeholder Text", so you may want to consider using that for cross-application consistency.
On the 2008 generation MacBook I was able to test this on, Liquify always launches in CPU mode (1 pixel black border around the preview image). Not sure if the GPU in that system is simply not supported. I suggest showing an unobtrusive information note somewhere (maybe below the settings), like "GPU acceleration for this filter is not supported on this hardware configuration". Like the "Efficiency" setting in the document window status bar, this would help users identify potential performance bottlenecks on their systems. The black border is just not very discoverable.
The improvements to text (paragraph/character styles etc.) would make a glyphs panel like in InDesign and Illustrator a logical addition (saves unnecessary copy & paste operations).
It seems that multiple clips in the Animation Timeline cannot be trimmed at the same time, even if they are both selected.
The "Show Asian Text Options" checkbox seems to have disappeared from Preferences. Things like the Warichu option still seems to be Illustrator-only, even though it is incredibly useful for other things beyond what it was intended for (movie poster-style credits are the most popular example, but there are many more). Also, it seems illogical that you would have to choose between either of the text engines available, but I guess this is required by historical engineering decisions.
Panels still can only be docked to the edges of the primary monitor. Docking is not available on secondary monitors. On Windows, docking only works inside the main window, no matter on which screen. I know this is standard behavior, but I never really understood the logic behind that.
    Hope this is useful.

  • Enabling GPU in CS6 slows down brush strokes

Hello, I'm currently using Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended and I am experiencing a performance issue with the brush tool when the GPU option is enabled in the performance preferences.
When the GPU option is disabled I am able to draw lines and marks very quickly with all of the default brush tools available.  Even when options such as scattering and dual brush are turned on simultaneously the brush strokes are rendered so quickly on the canvas it feels instantaneous.  This is great for me because I use Photoshop and other programs for digital drawing and painting.
However with the GPU disabled I am unable to use functions such as canvas rotation, flick panning, scrubby zoom and so on - features that I find incredibly useful.  Also at different zoom levels images become highly pixelated and smooth lines appear very jagged.  This obviously makes images very difficult to work with!
As soon as I turn on the GPU option, even at the most basic setting the brush tool renders much slower across the canvas than when it was turned off.  However other operations such as zooming, flick panning, saving etc appear to be very fast.
This is quite confusing (and disappointing) as the brush tool is by far the most important tool I use in Photoshop.  I spend more time painting marks and drawing lines than anything else.  My understanding is that the brush tool should be just as fast to use (if not faster?) when the graphics processor is enabled as when it is disabled.
Here is the setup I am using:
Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit)
Adobe Photoshop CS6 Extended (64 bit) with latest updates as of 28/11/14
Asus Geforce GTX 560 Direct CU with the latest driver 344.75
    16GB available RAM
Intel i7 Quad Core CPU 3.07 GHz
As my GPU does not appear to be working hard at all when Photoshop is running even with advanced settings turned on, I can only guess that this is a problem with the Nvidia driver or Photoshop itself?  It seems as if the opengl drawing mode is not communicating properly with the Nvidia driver.  That's my guess so far as I'm no tech expert.
I have followed every step of the Photoshop CS6 GPU FAQ multiple times http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/photoshop-cs6-gpu-faq.html
    But the problem always persists.
I have also followed the advice of others by turning brush spacing up to 10% or higher which does help a little bit but this obviously does not solve the problem!
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could help me to solve this problem - perhaps someone from Adobe can test this on a similar hardware and software setup?  I would be very interested to learn what exactly is going on that is causing the slowdown.
I will also notify Nvidia and see if they are aware of the problem.
    Many thanks,
    Calum

Yes, it sounds like something is wrong with your video card driver.
Until Apple releases a fix, you can keep OpenGL drawing disabled.

  • CS4 GPU Acceleration and Intel X3100

    Hello everyone,
I currently own a laptop which I use heavily for image editing. It is powered by a very fast Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz and a power-efficient yet perfectly capable Intel X3100 integrated graphics chip.
My chip supports all of the necessary Shader versions, OpenGL 2.0, etc. ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#GMA_X3100 ). However, when I visit the Preferences menu to enable the OpenGL acceleration, I am presented with a grayed-out option telling me I may need to upgrade my drivers or graphics card.
I have tried new driver versions. Certainly I should not have to purchase another card (impossible in a laptop in fact) seeing as my chip supports all of the requisite features.
    Help? Thanks!
    Steve

    Hi Anne,
Let me clarify. I am not aware of any current compatibility issues with Flash (author or player).
The current Intel graphics drivers do not have the OpenGL features that Photoshop looks for to enable OpenGL acceleration. Intel is in the process of developing and testing an updated driver that will support this, hopefully to be released in early 2009.
    However,
b Photoshop CS4 does currently run reliably
on systems with Intel graphics - it's just that the new OpenGL-accelerated features in CS4 are not available.
I have used an Intel GM45 system with a pre-production driver to test the new Photoshop CS4 OpenGL features like smooth-zoom, birds-eye view, and canvas rotate, and they perform smoothly. The OpenGL performance is noticably slower on older GM965 systems, but it is still almost-smooth and better than not having OpenGL enabled at all. (Note that OpenGL 2.0 will
    i not
be supported on GM945 and earlier chipsets.)
It seems you are aware that the choice of a new notebook system does not only depend on the graphics chip's capabilities, but rather how the performance of the whole system suits your needs. For example, I use Premiere Pro to edit HDV and AVCHD video, and this depends much more on the performance of the CPU than on the graphics, so I would want a system with the best CPU, perhaps even at the cost of some graphics performance.
From what I have seen of Photoshop's new OpenGL features, the GM45 chipset is quite capable of giving most users a nice, smooth experience, and even the GM965 is "ok", with just a little jerkiness. An exception may be users that bring fancy, large 3D models into Photoshop - this should work, but I don't have that type of file to test the performance (anybody want to share some?).
To summarize, the Intel graphics systems will work with Photoshop CS4 now, just without OpenGL features. If these OpenGL features are important to you, and you can wait until Feb-March for the new driver (sorry, still no firm promise on the exact date), then I would still recommend an Intel integrated graphics system with a GM965, GM35, or GM45 chipset (GM45 having the best performance).

  • Resolution problem: downsized photos in sequence A, enlarged in sequence B

I have downsized photos in sequence A (to 25%), this sequence is enlarged (300%) in my final sequence (B).
The exported movie is unsharp/blurry. So apparently in the sequence B it doesn't use the full image resolution, but it uses the downscaled image from sequence A.
    How can I resolve this?

To explain the purpose: Sequence A has a whole bunch of photo's for a stopmotion video. I use this sequence for the right timing of the images. All images are scaled down to fit the window size so I can see what I'm doing, while working in this sequence.
Sequence B is used to zoom in on the right parts of the canvas, rotate the canvas and so on.
And yes, I dragged B into A from the browser.

  • What is wrong with my Photoshop (CS5)?

Photoshop did this to me twice this week... during some actions like eyedrop-picking-up-color-then-apply-it-to-a-keyline... the "canvas" rotated itself (both time to some what a cw13°). There is no way to back up... nothing is recorded in "history".
When it happened the 2nd time, today, I called the support center. After talking to 2 guys I got the third guy who guided me to reset all tools etc. but was not able to bring my screen back to normal.
The guy insisted that this not a bug because he hasn't heard anybody else complained about anything like this. He simply couldn't give me a reason for why and tried to tell me that it could be anything, tool set up changed, preference changed. I only changed the units set from inch to pixel, no special tool setup at all. It felt like 10 some years ago when the office "IT" guy said that the reason that designers' computers freeze so often was because we typed too fast.
Anyway, I found myself back to the old days... saving my file every other min.
Anybody has any idea what this is about?

Thanks for this post.  I kept on seeing that little red "compas" icon flashing on my screen with my new mac and CS5 photoshop.  I thought I was seeing things, then a wayward finger movement tilted my canvas.  "Can a canvas rotate?!?" I was completely confused and this hint here proved to my kids I am not insane nor have I broken the new mac...
    Very helpful post, much appreciated.
