Capture jstl index in html?

Hello!
I need to capture the index in c:foreach for a mapped property name, I tried the below code, can some one tell me what am I doing wrong?
<c:forEach items="${list}" var="currentVal" varStatus="status">
<html:text styleClass="text" property="copyProcess('<c:out value="${status.index}"/>')"/>

am having to do the following (see working code) to get the above code to work, why can't I use jstl to accomplish it?
am not able to get the below code to work, the value of ${status.index} does not explode ends up as a string
<html:text styleClass="text" property="copyProcess(${status.index})"/>working code:
<c:set var="index" scope="session"><c:out value="${status.index}"/></c:set>
<% String x = "copyProcess(" + (String)session.getAttribute("index") + ")"; %>
<html:text styleClass="text" property="<%= x %>"/>
