Capture Text using Terminal

Hi,
I use Terminal to Telnet into my routers. I would like to be able to capture the output text from the routers. Does anybody knows how to accomplish this?
I don't want to use copy and paste.
Thanks for your help.

The standard shell redirect '>' will direct output to the specified file. If the filename doesn't exist it's created. If it does exist, it's overwritten. It's up to you to specify a filename that doesn't conflict with an existing file if you want to keep old ones.
An alternative would be to use '>>' which appends the text to the file. That way you get one file with all the content.
However, I'm not sure either of these are going to work for you since they won't work with interactive commands such as telnet - all output is directed to the file and you won't see anything in your terminal.
You can get a little further by using tee which directs the output to both your terminal window and the file:
telnet your.router.ip | tee /path/to/file.txt
which will both capture the output to the file and let you see it. However, it won't capture any input - any commands you type will not be written to the file. Not sure if that's enough for you.
The last option I can think of is Terminal's Save Text As... command which will let you save the current terminal window in a text file, or Save Selected Text As... which will save the current selection to a file. Both of these are post-processed, though and you'll need to remember to do them before you close the window.

    With Regards,

    Excellent Eitan,
Here is what I am trying to Achieve.
In Create Notification IW21 , They need 5 Long Text in Custom Tab ( Say Tab Name is MBR ).
    TAB1 NOTIFICATION Standard Information , TAB2 REFERENCE OBJ , TAB 3 MalFunction , Breakdown Standard one...... TAB 7 ( Custom Tab ).
In Custom Tab , I added 5 LONG TEXT ( its 5 WHY Concept ).
When the User enters data in 5 Long text , it should store long text along with Notification number when save.
But Notification number will be generated @ the time of SAVE , but before that its just shows as
%0000000001 ( and Number will be generated 1000065479) at Save.
    How to achive this .
    I did this:
Added 5 Custom Container. and In PBO / PAI
      PROCESS BEFORE OUTPUT.
    MODULE STATUS_0100.
    PROCESS AFTER INPUT.
    MODULE USER_COMMAND_0100.
    IN PBO
CREATE OBJECT TEXT_EDITOR1 ,    CREATE OBJECT TEXT_EDITOR2,    CREATE OBJECT TEXT_EDITOR3 like wise 5
CALL METHOD TEXT_EDITOR1->SET_TEXT_AS_R3TABLE ,    CALL METHOD TEXT_EDITOR2->SET_TEXT_AS_R3TABLE .. Like wise 5 , So when the user Click on Custom Tab ( MBR ).
    It give 5 Long text.
When he click tab1 or tab2 or tab3 .. and again tab MBR , still data is available.
How to store this data for future retrival ( IW22 or IW23 ) ?
Its working fine when I enter first time and goes here and there and finall save .
IN SAVE BADI , I imported the Long text and created Standard Text SO10 with Notification Number with LONG1 , LONG2 .. means 1000065479LONG1 as standard text.
But not working when I entered first time and go to tab1 and tab2 and then to MBR tab and added few more lines , its not exporting full lines and in IMPORT ( SAVE BADI ) giving ZERO Lines.
Please help and thanks for your quick response.

  • Using Terminal in Mac OSX to program and test java

I bought a book on java and it says I should not use a JDK like Net Beans when first learning java.
Right or wrong I would like to know how to use terminal to program and compile simple scripts.
    So my question is:
How do you go about setting up the computer to use terminal to write and compile a java program? I know my Mac sees java in terminal because tells me Im running "version 1.5.0_07"
I just need a link to some info on how to get started using Terminal for my command line with java.
I think if I could get a path set up from the command line to my text file and have javac see it I would be in pretty good shape. At least for now.
If I use a text saved plain text file (.java) how do I set up a path to it using javac from the command line?
Where can I find or link to this kind of info?
Macbook Pro Mac OS X (10.4.10)

    Hi,
seems like you have not tried out a few things.
    1. Set up the JAVA_HOME environment variable. (I assume you pretty much know it) the folder where java is installed.
    2. set up the environment variable to point to the bin folder inside the java installation folder.
    3. open up a console (it seems from your post you know it.), type java -version see the java version.
    4. type in javac, press enter: you should get the javac options.
    5. type in java, you should see the java options.
Write your programs in a text editor, save it as somename.java.
open a console, change to the directory containing the java file.
    type: javac somename.java <PRESS ENTER>
you should get the compilation errors if any.
    if not
    type in: java somename.java
    Hope this helps.

AyusmanStep 1 and 2 are generally not needed. Mac OS X comes with Java configured up and running right out of the box.

  • Mass filename changes using terminal? How?

    Hello,
I recently put a Linksys NAS on my network. Unfortunately, the EXT3 format used on the disks does not like filenames with special characters such as "/" or "?". So I cannot copy files from my PowerBook to the NAS with these characters in their names.
A search of my hard drive shows 800+ files with these forbidden characters.
Is there a way to use terminal (or any aspect of OS X) to do a mass change of these characters to a more acceptable character (i.e. changing all instances of "/" to "-")?
    Thanks for the help.

tcsh: Invalid null commandAh, you're using tcsh. Bad news! I'm sure it could be made to work, but I've switched to bash because it is better for this sort of stuff. Gary will tell you to switch to zsh, but for now bash will do. I just tried the command as posted and tcsh complained loudly!
First point: often when you try to copy/paste from a browser window, you get an extra space appended to the line. It often doesn't matter, but it could here (may explain the "tcsh: Invalid null command" message). So copy the commands into a TextEdit document, which you have changed to Plain Text from the Format menu. Then be sure not to include any trailing space.
Second point, we'll scrap the use of sudo since it is only your Home directory that you are interested in.
Third point: as I said, we'll use bash. The prompt will change to a '$' instead of a '%'. When you've finished, you can return to tcsh with a plain exit command.
So, copy and paste the following into the Terminal window, one line at a time, with a return after each line:
    <pre>bash
    find -d ~/Documents \( -name "?" -o -name ":" \) -exec echo 'mv "{}" `echo "{}" |
    sed -e "s^\?^_^g" -e "s^:^-^g" ` ' \; | sh</pre>This should work—it did for me!
    Note:
it returned a > prompt with nothing else on the line.It will do this after the second line above—it is an invitation to complete the command

I think they mean IDE, considering that Java is the JDK. And I agree with that idea, not just for Java, but for any language.
How do you go about setting up the computer to use terminal to write and compile a java program?
There isn't anything to setup. Just run Terminal and type "vi hello.java" or "nano hello.java". To compile, type "javac hello.java".
I know that’s pretty big question. I just need a link to some info on how to get started using terminal and java.
That is not necessarily a big question, just fundamental. Try Google. It becomes second nature after a couple of decades so I don't really know where to tell you to look. People do tend to have a big list of links, hopefully they can contribute some.
If I use a text editor how do I set up a path to it using javac?
It should already be in your path.

Try Google. People like it. You should find many pages similar to this.

  • Using Terminal

I recently found a 3rd party driver for my old scanner that worked perfectly until the scanner was powered off. After the scanner was powered off and turned back on my mac could no longer find it. So I used the 3rd party site's trouble shooting to try to get the mac to see the scanner again using terminal. I entered this line: sudo emacs /usr/local/etc/sane.d/〈name of your backend〉.conf
I didn't realize that I had to name my backend at the time so I left it as is. What did I tell my machine to do? Since I did that every time I boot up, the bluetooth assistant pops up looking for a wireless keyboard (I don't have one) until my keyboard is detected. Could that be related? I've gotten around the window by clicking off the bluetooth assistant at startup option in my system preferences, but I'd like to know what I've done to my baby.
    thanks

First off, I don't think that your scanner troubles have anything to do with the bluetooth keyboard. Your scanner isn't connected with bluetooth, is it?
The sane.d directory is for scanner-only stuff (sane stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy").
It sounds like you have a bluetooth keyboard defined in your bluetooth preferences. If you can find it, delete it from the list.
You didn't say if you got your scanner working again or not. You probably don't need a Terminal-based editor to manage text files. With the Finder, you can open /usr/local/etc/sane.d by selecting Go -> Go to folder and typing the path in. You may have permission issues there, so you'll probably have to enter your admin account password whenever you change anything.

  • Log in/out of finder using terminal

This is a rather odd one:
Is it possible to log out of one account and log in to another in the finder using terminal?

Assuming that you are exchanging passwordless keys in ssh, then the assumption account to account security is not a primary concern. If this is true, then you could use AppleScript to automate the change of user and then launch processes as that user. While crude:
Run this as user1 logged into the Finder:
    tell application "Terminal"
    activate
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "su user2"
tell application "System Events" to key code 36
    delay 1
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "a"
tell application "System Events" to key code 36
    delay 1
tell application "System Events" to keystroke "/Applications/Calculator.app/Contents/MacOS/Calculator &"
tell application "System Events" to key code 36
    end tell
That will activate Terminal, drop the text su user1 into the command prompt, commit the Enter key, wait a second, pass the user's password to stdin, and commit Enter key again. Then the final command is to send the string path to the application executable. That will launch the applications (Calculator shown above - replace with path the QT Broadcaster) and release the shell so you can do additional scripts as the alternate user.
By the way, have you looked into Podcast Producer? It sounds like you are doing more live streams so it may not be for you, but figured I'd ask.
    Hope this helps

  • Can't capture video using iSight camera in QuickTime 7.4 (92)

OK, I see that there are plenty of "bugs" with Quicktime Version 7.4 (92), but I don't see the problem I am having, posted anywhere. Here goes...
I cannot capture video using my [Firewire] iSight camera on my CoreDuo MacMini. I definitely used to be able to do this. When I go to File>New Movie Recording, I get a back/blank Movie Recording window and that's it. I click on the Red/Record button and nothing happens. The timer doesn't even advance. Just sits there. When I try to stop the recording, I get the following message:
*"Recording failed because no data was received.*
*Make sure that the media input source is turned on and playing."*
I can still capture audio, although had some problems and had to "downgrade" to version 7.3.x and subsequently reinstalled 7.4. Now the audio works but still no video.
    A few things:
    1. YES, the iSight camera works - I can use it in iMovie, iChat, Photobooth, etc. - for both video and audio.
    2. As I mentioned, I tried "downgrading" (using "Pacifist") but still no video.
    3. I re-installed Version 7.4 and the audio problems cleared up, but again, still unable to capture video.
    3. All software updates installed.
    Any ideas???
    Thanks!

"As I mentioned, I tried "downgrading" (using "Pacifist") but still no video."
See QuickTimeKirk’s posting in the following thread:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1357579&tstart=0
    Try the following:
    Trash com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
    It's located in your account:
    HD/Library/Preferences/com.apple.LaunchServices.plist
Delete the file, restart (a new .plist will be created) and quicktime hopefully will work again w/o doing an Archive & Install.
+If you want to do an A&I:+
Do an archive and install of your OS from the OS disc. Stop at the QT upgrade you need.
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301270 Scroll down to "Archive and Install”
IMPORTANT: Maker sure you select "preserve user preferences and data" when you performed the A&I?
    Good luck!

  • Creating a long text using ABAP code.. fm SAVE_TEXT

When you create an order via IW31 one of the options is to click on the text button and create a long text. I am basically trying to mimic this action from within my ABAP code.
The text id details are as follows:
Text Name       500000015000046  which is (5000000 + order number)
    Language        EN
Text ID            KOPF         Order header text
    Text Object      AUFK       Order text
If i manually create the text within the transaction i am then able to view and update it via function modules READ_TEXT and SAVE_TEXT. But if the text has not already been created READ_TEXT obviously returns nothing as it does not exist and SAVE_TEXT does not seem to created it!
Anyone know how i would go about creating this text using ABAP code?
Hope this make a bit of sense
    Thanks in advance

I have implemented the code as i think it should be. See below, can any see what is wrong. If i add init_text it makes no difference and adding the commit_text just makes it hang

  • HOW can I enter text using Japanese character sets?

The "Text, Plates, Insets" section of the LOOKOUT(6.01) Help files states:
"Click the » button to the right of the Text field to expand the field for multiple line entries. You can enter text using international character sets such as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese."
Can someone please explain HOW to do this? Note, I have NO problem inputting Hirigana, Katakana, and Kanji into MS WORD; the keyboard emulates the Japanese layout and characters (Romaji is default) and the IME works fine converting Romaji, and I can also select charcters directly from the IME Pad. I have tried several different fonts with success and am currently using MS UI Gothic.ttf as default. Again, everything is normal and working in a predictable manner within Word.
I cannot get these texts into Lookout. I can't cut/paste from HTML pages or from text editors, even though both display properly. Within Lookout with JP selected as language/keyboard, when trying to type directly into the text field, the IME CORRECTLY displays Hirigana until <enter> is pressed, at which point all text reverts to question marks (?? ???? ? ?????). If I use the IME Pad, it does pretty much the same. I managed to get the "Yen" symbol to display, though, if that's relevant. As I said, font selected (in text/plate font options) is MS UI Gothic with Japanese as the selected script. Oddly enough, at this point the "sample" window is showing me the exact Hirigana character I want displayed in Lookout, but it won't. I've also tried staying in English and copying unicode characters from the Windows Character Map. Same results (Yen sign works, Hirigana WON'T).
    Help me!

If I could write a file that had, say, the couple most common settings (9600-8-n-1, 57600-8-n-1, et cetera) that I could simply click on, to open a new Terminal window with those settings, then simply close that, and open a new window (apple+n) in order to get back to a default settings terminal window. All feedback is most appreciated.
    Thanks so much, Jason Sjobeck

Hi, Jason. Welcome to the Discussions.
You wrote: "All feedback is most appreciated."OK.
    1. Have you considered discussing this with Keyspan Support?
    2. Have you read the section "OSX has Terminal.app - why do I need ZTerm?" on the ZTerm Home Page? That seems to explain why one needs an app like ZTerm.
    3. A quick search of Keyspan's FAQ for your product and terminal doesn't yield much more than how to find the serial ports using Terminal.
Likewise, this Google search also yields little, and variants of that search of such weren't particularly help either.
It appears your inquiry seems to be a somewhat esoteric topic.
    4. Apparently, ZTerm X is a bit long in the tooth and there's no Universal Binary for it. It sounds, however, like you've tried it running on your MBP under Rosetta, yes?
    5. In researching alternatives to ZTerm for you, I note the followng:• The comment from "Reverb" on this page suggests C-Kermit or Kermit as a free alternative.
    • This tip on Mac OS X Hints cites Minicom as another option.6. You may want to try your question on the Unix Discussion.
    Good luck!

  • Using terminal to change IP address

One emac has gone odd. It refuses it acknowledge the server and it has locked its IP address off the network. It retains the server prefs and won't let me use the sys prefs to open network. (I work in a school - obviously I lock them 80 ).
Can anyone tell me which file(s) I need to find on the client to change the IP address using terminal please. I've been looking at files in /etc where I think it should be but can't find anything.
