Capturing footage, editing, then reinserting edited footage.

does anyone know if its possible to capture a section of footage using a motion keyframe along a pathway, editing it and then reinserting it back into the motion keyframe pathway of the original footage????

thanks for reading my question and replying so quickly, sorry about the poor terminology.
essentially, what I'm trying to do with fcp is take a sequence of edited footage of different landscapes, add a chroma key sequence of a child "flying on a magic carpet" within the clip; not just edited straight in however....but added in on a motion path (i hope thats the right terminology), so the final product looks like a child on a carpet flying from a distance into the foreground of the shot.
so, i would like to know if it is possible to use the chroma key function at the same time i apply a motion path function, or if it is possible to extract a part of the footage along a motion path, take it out, apply a chroma key filter, then re insert it back into the original clip.......if that makes any sense??
again, thanks for your time and I appologise if I'm not clear with my explanation.

  • Should captured footage and timeline edit be kept on seperate drives?

i'm new to FCP and have my captured footage and the edited project contained on an external drive... but from the get-go i've been having, what seem to be, memory issues-- everything starts well, but during each new editing session, the thumbnail images on clips entered into the project timeline soon fail to appear. not long after this behavior begins, the clips themselves, while present on the timeline (i know because they play back) are invisible each time i drag them down for editing. after i save the project, shut down and restart, everything is present and back to normal... but once i begin editing, the behavior described above begins to reoccur.
i'm wondering if this issue could be resolved by keeping the project on the apple's internal hard drive while maintaining the captured footage on the external scratch drive... or maybe there's something else going wrong here. any thoughts on this would be much appreciated.

The generally accepted principle is to keep the
project file on the system drive and all captured
media and render files on a secondary internal (or
    external) drive.
Personally I keep my thumbnails on the system drive
    as well. They're tiny.
jim, thanks for the response. is there a trick to putting the project and thumbnails on the system drive, keeping them separate from the external scratch drive? or is this easy to figure out? thanks again.

  • Deleted captured footage so i think can no longer edit my movies

Hi, so i deleted the captured video files because they take up a heck of a lot of space. Now, if i go back into final cut, none of the clips on the time line can work because the original files were deleted. I need to do stuff like put a title and credits, and adjust the music. Will i be able to do that since i deleted those original captured files, or am i stuck with the version i burned before deleting the captured footage?

ok so i went into the project with all the files offline, i connected the camera with the right tape, i went to capture, clicked Project when it was all ready and i hit continue, the tape just kept rewinding, little by little to the beginning (the stuff i need is in the middle, and i had it at about the right place). Im looking at the exact stuff i need on my cam, but its just not doing it.... at one point i got it to capture one section of the right stuff, but it just created a new captured clip, i dont know how to reconnect it to the stuff in the timeline... i went to a clip that used part of that, and clicked reconnect media, but when i looked it up and chose it, it wouldnt work

  • Tips for logging previously captured footage

Hi I just wanted to get some tips on how to best log previously captured footage. I was thinking of using extended markers. Any other ideas? Thank you!

I go in and hack up the footage using either Add Edit or Set In/Out>Delete the unwanted stuff (custom hotkeys rule!). Then I rearrange the footage into various Sequences as I need them.
So, if it were a year end Sports Memory video, I'd put all the running shots in a Running Sequence, and all the eating shots in an Eating Sequence, or whatever. If it were a Wedding I'd put all the Ceremony footage in a Ceremony Timeline... etc.
Since the footage is already there, I just start hacking out the stuff I don't want. Of course, I don't know what kind of project this is, and if it's a documentary, this method will probably not work. But, I guess it depends on the documentary too. <smile>

  • HELP!!! Captured footage "garbled"...

I'm in Gr. 12 using premiere to edit a movie project. I've been using premiere for about 6 or 7 years, since my brother introduced me to it. Over that time, I've learned the ins and outs really well. With such little time left to edit, I'm reluctanct to try to learn another editor. Every time I have a new video project, there seems to be a new Premiere out so I just get the new trial. Did this with CS4. Here's my problem:
I have a new camera; a Sony HandyCam HDR-HC3. I understand Adobe doesn't let you capture HDV, unless you pay for the whole thing (which I think is a real shame for poor ameteur editors like me). When I capture the footage in the standard SD, the picture acts all weird and becomes like deinterlaced or something. Audio is fine. I find a work-around about six months ago with CS3 but I don't remember it... . Video plays fine in VLC player. Anyone work-arounds?
Adobe capture the footage as .avi s.'
Update: This is driving me nuts. The videos play in FLV, WMP, and QT. Even adobe media player. WTH is going on?
Update 2: I tried capturing footage from a normal DV tape with this camera and the same damn thing happened. So it wasn't because I just shot it with an HDV tape.
Update 3: Windows FREAKING Movie Maker plays the captured footage fine.
Update 4: I've added an image of Gspot and of the garbled thing its doing.

The academic versions are very, very cheap. I wish that I could qualify for these. Sometimes I think of taking classes in an approved college, just to get these, but then I make $ with them (not forbidden, but certainly outside of the spirit), so I do not feel right doing so. Even when I did take classes, I only used my "discount" for books - never the software.
One bit of advice would be to completely low-level re-format your HDD and totally reinstall everything after using a trial, before reinstalling the full-paid version. I also highly recommend buying the full-paid version and installing it on a clean system. Too many trials and your system is likely filled with all sorts of detritus. Not a good thing at all, and it might take weeks of hunting around to remove it all. If you've had more than one trial installed, you are probably working on a machine that is about ready to systemically crash - this could well be a hard-crash, and nothing but a total rebuild will get it going again. Be very careful and do not commit important Projects to it.
Back to the lack of MPEG support in the trial: Your purpose is exactly why Adobe does not pay the licensing fee to MainConcept for the trials. Too many people abuse the trials, and this would cost Adobe $. Then, Jim, Eddie, I, and others would have to pay more for the software. That would make us all poorer for it. I'm not keen on supporting other folk with my work and efforts, regardless of what the tone in the US might be right now.
To put it bluntly, you're walking on egg shells here, as we all pay full-fare for our software.

  • Re-capturing footage

    Hiya,
I've captured and edited my footage at 59.94 fps (because of various time related and FCP related issues) but at some point the clips may need to be recaptured at 24fps (filmed on Panasonic Varicam DVCPROHD). Will this cause major problems in the edit? I.e. Is the sound all going to go out of sync and are the edit points going to be a few frames out?
Basically I'm wondering if it's worth recapturing, so ultimately my question is if 59.94 fps is a viable and usable frame rate when is comes to the final product (which will be onlined at a post production house and may go onto film)?
Any help wld be massively appreciated, if only because rehiring the deck will cost money and not having to do that would be great. Any help at all...

JoJunior...you need to find out. That is pretty much a basic item to know even BEFORE you start editing. But that is for your future knowledge. That doesn't help you now. I'd ask the telecine house that question, but I am thinking that it might be an issue, as for smooth transfer you want 24fps or 23.98.
Hmmmm...what to do... Because I don't think you can capture the clips at 23.98 once the clip information says that they are 59.94. The only option I can see possibly working on the re-capture end is to export an EDL (this means that you can really only have 1 layer of video) and using Cinema Tools to convert that. I once edited a short telecined to HDCAM then dubbed to DVCAM, and I didn't remove the pulldown so I edited in a 29.97 timebase...what I was told by the post super of the post facility. Then the editor called and wondered why I didn't edit 23.98...gah! I had to send them the project file and a converted EDL. YOu might try that. That might allow you to recapture the clips at 23.98.
Or you can try dropping the entire sequence into a 23.98 sequence and rendering. That works when I have footage shot at 59.94 that I want to incorporate. But I am not sure how that would treat a full show. Do a test for both and see.

  • Need advice ensuring my 25p is captured and edited properly.

Hi all. New to Final Cut and just got a DVX100BEN (PAL) and want to know what I have to setup to capture and edit 25p with Final Cut.
My train of thought here is that I can just use a standard DV PAL setup as the DVX100b stored 25p in a 50i stream. So my questions are:
    1) Can I just use standard, interlaced DV PAL for capture?
    2) Can I just use standard, interlaced DV PAL for the timeline or do I have to set it up as progressive some how?
    3) When rendering, say to DVD can I just render using Compresser to DVD PAL as normal and all is good?
Also, viewer seems to deinterlace it's display so I was wondering if there is a way to get it to just show the rawm image, as it's already progressive from the DVX?
    Cheers
    Aaron Koolen

Well, noone offered me an answer, no matter where I looked, but after some searching I'm pretty certain that you just use the DV PAL template, keep everything interlaced and render out as DV PAL.
I say this because I found a post somewhere by Graeme Natress that pretty much said this.
So, personally, I'm happy with it. Now if you were wanting to render as a true progressive movie then you'd have to do something to tell your renderer to NOT deinterlace the footage.

  • Captured footage is distorted

I captured footage on a DV NTSC ZR30 MC Camcorder in 12 bit rate. Captured footage through firewire using 32 kHz capture rate (equivalent to 12 bit). The captured image is distorted (the digital lines constructing the image are out of sync).
When I first captured the footage and edited it there was no issues. after I rendered, the footage was distorted and after exporting it remained this way. After that the same footage re-captured appears distorted as well.
    Thank you for your time,
    Hazel

Footage from a DVD is already somewhat compressed (MPEG-2), and if you are capturing via S-video, you are playing it out as analog, and then converting it back to DV in FCP (that is, if your capture settings/easy setup is for DV).
What are your capture settings? Did you choose an easy setup before opening a project and capturing? If you do that, the video may look better, but capturing from a DVD never produces great results.
A better way would be to download MPEG StreamClip; this allows you to convert the DVD content (I'm assuming this is not a copyrighted disc) to the DV format that FCP can work with. It still sacrifices some quality, but it's better than trying to capture from the DVD player.
You can get it here, for free: [http://www.squared5.com>

  • Unable to Capture Footage, File Error: Unknown file

Alright, I've been at it for hours trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I have been able to capture footage before but not with this version.
-I have already repaired disk permissions twice, ran disk warrior also.
-I have it on the basic DV NTSC Setting, which worked perfectly on the laptop, but I need to edit this project on the tower.
-Have been through numerous settings and no go.
-I can control the deck/camera but it will not control the camera when trying to capture
Running Final Cut Pro HD 5 completely updated with the most recent software.
Need some help, this project cant be delayed this long.

  • Capturing footage without timecodes

I love editing with Final Cut Express, but capturing footage is a nightmare. The program keeps trying to locate timecode breaks on my Hi8 tape during capture, which results in me losing three to four seconds of footage from the beginning of each scene.
Is there a way to tell FCE to disregard timecodes? When I capture family movies, I'd like the importing to be as seamless as possible -- much like when capturing in iMovie. (I do know that I can capture in iMovie and edit in FCE, but if it's possible, I'd like to do all my work in FCE without relying on iMovie.)
Thanks to anyone who can help!

Thank you both very much for your quick replies! I tried switching my Easy Setup as suggested, and now my capturing seems to be working smoothly. Awesome!
Thanks so much again -- I really appreciate it!

  • Working with Screen Capture Footage in FCP

I purchased Snapz Pro X to record screen capture footage for a project I am doing. After recording the .mov files I imported them into FCP and edited together a sequence along with music and titling. Unfortunately in the output video the footage looks compressed and fuzzy. I have the project resolution set to an HD setting, but I'm still getting a fuzzy looking screen shot.
What is the proper way to import screen captures into FCP and how do I export them without loosing resolution.
Thank you ahead of time to everyone who has any input?

    Hi -
When you saved your SnapZ Pro X movies, a window comes up allowing you to choose the video codec to use when saving the file. What settings did you use?
Also, have you rendered the timeline?
    Thanks

  • Capturing footage from Camera using USB port

Quick question, that I need help with. I have final cut pro and I am trying to capture footage from a Sony Handy Cam. It only has the option to use a use connection to my mac.
In Final Cut pro, I can't figure out how to set it up to capture from the camera. If anyone can help and/or walk me through the process, that would be a great help.
    Thanks.

    Hi:
What kind of camere is it: DVD or hard drive?
If it's a DVD one you can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the MPEG2 files to an editable format like DV.

  • Timecode break while capturing footage

I am having a timecode problem. I have FCP 6, and running it on OS 10.4.11; I have it set so that all of the media is backed up on an
external drive, a GLYPH GT050Q. My camera is a sony dsr-pdx 10. I had no trouble capturing footage on my new laptop, a mac book pro
in my studio, that is running on Leopard. This is the second time I have had a problem transfering from this computer since I upgraded
to FCP, but it only seems to be particular tapes that are having problems. This is a new phenomena, I have never had problems like these
before, and I am spending alot of time trying to fix the problem. I am certain that it isn't the tape, but some kind of match up issue. But I just went over my settings with a friend who edits both on
avid and on fcp, and she didn't find out the problem.
    help.
    EA

Well, I just did a test with my laptop, a power book g4 that runs on tiger, just as my tower does. I fear that if I upgrade my tower and power book g 4 to leopard, they will run more slowly. The new laptop I have is at another location, and it runs leopard.
Also, I learned that there is something about my external Glyph drive (the one that is larger, with more space, hooked to the tower that keeps reading time code breaks, where there are none. Meanwhile, this is not happening on the power book g4, that has another glyph drive hooked up to it.
Now this, I don't understand. Maybe its the way the drive is written.

  • Dvx100 24pa captured and edited at 29.97

    Hi there,
I'm trying to rework an old project where i mistakenly captured and edited 24pa footage from a dvx100b at 29.97.
is it possible to perform a reverse telecine with cinema tools to remove the pulldown from a finished edit on a 29.97 timeline? if so, what settings should i use?
i normally remove pulldown on capture with 24pa footage, and edit in a 23.98 timeline, but this project is from before i knew better, and mistakenly worked in 29.97, and am now suffering from interlacing problems/duplicate frames.
any advice would be appreciated. i am trying to avoid recapturing and re-editing.
thanks for your help in advance

    thanks guys...
these are both possible solutions that i didn't think of.
the situation with this piece is it is one long source clip, chopped down into 100+ short clips, with a lot of precise cuts, but unfortunately no respect for pulldown cadence.
using cinema tools, i have performed reverse telecine which seems to remove the pulldown for clips that have the right timing, and unfortunately, not for those that are off.
i should probally just re-edit, but this is the sort of project you really only want to do once.
i guess i'm hoping for an easy fix, and that probally doesn't exist.
i still have the digitized footage and the sequence (29.97). is it possible to somehow remove the pulldown of the source footage, and rework the timeline accordingly?
    thanks again.

  • Captured footage not sharp

my fresh captured footage is already not sharp looking at it with quicktime, and I have done nothing to it!!
I have been talking with apple and all settings are ok, Got the latest software updates...and still have this problem. After 8 years of editing on an older MAC I sure was not ready for this, can anyone shed some light on this?

my quicktime does look better, but I still have inferior footage seemingly at every stage.
Let me explain. I actually have a few clips I imported from FCP, and a few clips I brought in directly from an older program (2mv files) WHen I look at a preview of the DVD, it is very visible that the "new" clips are far inferior.
I followed the course of Larry, who recommends to export using quicktime...but what I noticed when he showed how to do it, his clip renders in DVDstudio pro, where my new clips remain orange ( a dot) as opposed to green...so I am thinking something has got to be wrong here...
a note the capture quicktime file does seem of normal size for raw dv capture...
If I would not have a customer on my back, I would have time to sort it out...but the clock is ticking....AUCH!!! thanks for answering guys, it is MOST appreciated
