Capturing TAB key within JTabbedPane

I have a custom JComponent that is inside a JTabbedPane and the only way I can receive the keyPressed() event with you press TAB is if I override isManagingFocus() and return true. Otherwise the TAB key causes you to jump upto the tabs. But this is a deprecated API. How do objects like JTextArea capture TAB properly?
Thanks.

Ya, I see that. But I don't want to replace TAB with another key, I want to be able to process ALL keys on the keyboard and these new APIs don't accept null.
Does anyone know how JTextArea does it?

  • Pressing tab key within table not scrolling to next input field

    Hi All,
    I have a table with editable and read only fields. I have more than 20 columns. When the tab Key is pressed it scrolls only to the editable fields that are in the visible screen. It does not scroll the table to the right to the next input field.
    However if I change the screen size so that the scroll bar is required for the browser then it will scroll across moving the browser scroll bar, moving the cursor to the input field that was not visible. Again it does not go further moving the scroll bar within the table to the next editable field to the right.
    The table has been set to scrollable with the scrollable column count set to 8.
    We are using explorer 8 on 7.01
    Is it possible to have the tab key move from input field to input field scrolling the table to the next input field if it is not visible yet?
    Thanks
    Bruce

    What you describe sounds like the correct functionality.  If you set a scrollable column count, only the visble rows are actually rendered on the client side.  When you use the horizontal scroll bar, you are triggering a server side event to retrive the next set of visible columns.  Therefore the browser doesn't actually know anything about non-visible columns and hence the tab can't go to them.
    When you increase the number of visible columns (or don't set anything for visible column) you render al the columns on the client side and use the browser scrolling.  Therefore the tab works.

  • Problem capturing "Enter Key" within 2 paragraph in JSP

    I create a textarea for customer to enter their data. Something the data contain 2 paragraph with Enter Key involve. Then, i store the data into my database. Once i re-display the data back to customer, the data never show in 2 paragraph ?
    who know.... pls pls help..... in JSP how am i going to do, so that the data disply in 2 paragraph.

    Are you displaying the data again in TextArea? If not then you need to take care of '\r\n'. Split the data for '\r\n' and display the data in two paragraphs.
    String wholeData="Your_Paragraph1\r\nYour_Paragraph2";
    StringTokenizer st = new StringTokenizer(wholeData,"\r\n");
    while(st.hasMoreTokens()) our.print(st.nextToken()+"<br>");Hope this helps.

  • How to show list of items when the user pressed tab key in an empty field

    Hi all
    i would like to know if there is a way to open a form with items list which will be shown to the user when he pressed the tab key within a field for instance "item code" field will present a search form with a table filled with item codes and their description.
    i'm currently working in 2004 version. i know how to catch the event.
    i'm creating a form with a matrix object binded to a datasource which is connected to the data base table which contains all the items.
    what would like to know if there is a better way to this. maybe using buisness partner objects. and if so how
    appriciate the help
    Yoav

    You Should use Formatted Search in this case.
    You must create and associate a query for your field.
    click on the field you want items to be listed and press Shift + F2
    catch the keydown event of this field  and check pval.charpressed = 9 (tab key press)
    then execute
    SBO_Application.SendKeys("+")

  • Java Applet problem in Internet Explorer 7 with Tab Key

    Hi
    I am developing some web pages in which iam using a java applet. so far the intended user are supposed to be using Internet Explorer 7. the problem i am facing is that when i press the tab key within the applet. the control get transferred to new tab position in the web page outside the applet and i have to click back to the applet to get control again transferred to the applet.
    i want to restrict the control of tab so that when tab is pressed within the applet the tab should not move to next tab position in the page and remain confined within the applet.
    Can someone please help me how can i achieve this and whether i have to do coding for it in the applet or in the web page...so that within the applet the Internet Explorer tab control should remain disabled..

    Hello all,
    I have the same problem, but I don't found a solution. Could you resolved the problem and who??
    Thank you.

  • Capturing the TAB key event.

    How can I capture the TAB key event?
    I am trying to use it within a JTextField to do a normal text tab operation.
    Thanks,

  • Not able to use the Tab key to Tab indent when within a text edit window...

    Two questions please... First one is above for the tab function. In Safari I just need to press control+option+tab to indent a tab within a text edit box on a website. This function is being used more via cloud and mobile capability.
    Second... I can, in Safari, Copy and paste a site with tables. Works great in Safari. When I try to do this in FF I lose the formatting of the tables and it just give plain text without the tabled fields.
    I would love to use FF because the compatibility if much greater than Safari, but... I need my functionality as well to do my work to the best and quickest ability.
    Thank you

    Help About says I'm on 20.0.1
    Up until last week, I was able to use the tab key when typing emails and other multi-line text boxes.
    Suddenly the behavior of the tab key changed. This isn't the first time. It's been quite a while ago that the function of the tab key changed from indenting to moving around the page, then after some time it changed back to indenting.
    Can we get this fixed and leave it alone, please?
    I may give one of those add-ins a try, but my problem with add-ins is that they break when FF is patched or upgraded, then I'm left with out the solution they provide.
    Can we just fix Firefox, please?
    Thanks,
    Frank
    P.S. Another potential fix I came across suggested starting FF in safe mode to see if the problem goes away. It does not. It seems to be a change to FF that appeared after an update last week. On or just befor 24 Apr.

  • Tab key event not fired in JTabbedPane

    Hello,
    I wanted to add the functionality of moving between tabs when Ctrl+Tab is pressed like Windows tabs.
    But the tab key listener event is not getting fired by pressing Tab. For all the other key pushes it is working good. It this a problem with Java? Any workarounds?
    Here is the sample code:
    import javax.swing.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    public class TestTab extends JFrame
         public void drawGUI()
              //getContentPane().setLayout(new GridLayout(1, 1));
              JTabbedPane lTabbedPane = new JTabbedPane();
              JPanel lFirstPanel = new JPanel();
              lFirstPanel.add(new JLabel("First Panel"));;
              JPanel lSecondPanel = new JPanel();
              lSecondPanel.add(new JLabel("Second Panel"));;
              lTabbedPane.addTab("Tab1", null, lFirstPanel, "Does nothing");
              lTabbedPane.addTab("Tab1", null,lSecondPanel, "Does nothing");
              getContentPane().add(lTabbedPane);
              lTabbedPane.addKeyListener(new KeyAdapter()
                   public void keyPressed(KeyEvent lKeyEvent)
                        System.out.println(lKeyEvent.getKeyText(lKeyEvent.getKeyCode()));
              setDefaultCloseOperation(WindowConstants.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
         public static void main(String[] args)
              TestTab lTestTab = new TestTab();
              lTestTab.drawGUI();
              lTestTab.setSize(200, 200);
              lTestTab.setVisible(true);

    The KeyPressed events for TAB and CTRL-TAB are typically consumed by the KeyboardFocusManager for component traversal. What you have to do is adjust traversal keys and add CTRL-TAB as an action of your JTabbedPane. This is usually done with the InputMap/ActionMap, not a KeyListener:
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.awt.event.*;
    import java.util.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class X {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            Set tabSet = Collections.singleton(KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_TAB, 0));
            KeyStroke ctrlTab = KeyStroke.getKeyStroke(KeyEvent.VK_TAB, InputEvent.CTRL_DOWN_MASK);
            final int FORWARD = KeyboardFocusManager.FORWARD_TRAVERSAL_KEYS;
            final JTabbedPane tp = new JTabbedPane();
            //setFocusTraversalKeys to remove ctrl-tab as a forward gesture
            tp.setFocusTraversalKeys(FORWARD, tabSet);
            for (int i=0; i<6; ++i) {
                JPanel p = new JPanel(new GridLayout(0,1));
                JTextArea area = new JTextArea();
                area.setFocusTraversalKeys(FORWARD, Collections.EMPTY_SET);
                p.add(new JScrollPane(area));
                area = new JTextArea();
                area.setFocusTraversalKeys(FORWARD, Collections.EMPTY_SET);
                p.add(new JScrollPane(area));
                tp.addTab("tab " + i,p);
            //add ctrlTab as an action to move to next tab
            Action nextTab = new AbstractAction("nextTab") {
                public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent evt) {
                    int idx = tp.getSelectedIndex();
                    if (idx != -1) {
                        idx = (idx + 1) % tp.getTabCount();
                        tp.requestFocusInWindow();
                        tp.setSelectedIndex(idx);
            InputMap im = tp.getInputMap(JComponent.WHEN_ANCESTOR_OF_FOCUSED_COMPONENT);
            im.put(ctrlTab, nextTab.getValue(Action.NAME));
            tp.getActionMap().put(nextTab.getValue(Action.NAME), nextTab);
            JFrame f= new JFrame("X");
            f.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            f.getContentPane().add(tp);
            f.setSize(400,300);
            f.setVisible(true);
    [/code[

  • PJC tab-key navigation problem within bean  (FORMS intercepting tab key??)

    Using Forms 10.1.2.3, IE7, JRE 1.6
    When attempting to navigate within the bean area, it appears as if FORMS is suppressing the keyEvent when the tab key is pressed. This means that I cannot use tab or shift-tab to navigate within the PJC's editable fields/buttons. I can click on them, enter data within them, but tab is somehow intercepted. When I place my PJC within a normal (non-forms) Java window, everything works fine.
    Documentation that I've read seems to indicate that tab should navigate perfectly fine within the bean area.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
    This is how I did it. Sorry about the formatting, it was OK when I pasted the code fragment in.
    My class contains this in the variable definitions.
    private AWTEventListener keyListener = new DoKey ();
    private class DoKey implements AWTEventListener {
    public void eventDispatched (AWTEvent e) {
    //System.err.println("eventDispatched " + e.toString());
    //System.err.println("eventDispatched source " + e.getSource().toString());
    if ((e instanceof KeyEvent) && (e.getSource() instanceof Component)) {
    * The event was a key pressed event and it was sourced from a Component.
    KeyEvent evt = (KeyEvent) e;
    if (evt.getID() == evt.KEY_PRESSED) {
    if (evt.getKeyCode() == evt.VK_TAB) {
    if (evt.isShiftDown()) {
    ((Component)e.getSource()).transferFocusBackward();
    else {
    ((Component)e.getSource()).transferFocus();
    The listener is enabled when on initialisation
    Toolkit.getDefaultToolkit().addAWTEventListener (keyListener, AWTEvent.KEY_EVENT_MASK);

  • Tab key for screen capture

    Hi All,
    Cap2 takes a new screen capture when we hit the Tab key. Is
    there a way to disable that?
    Thanks in advance - Vijay

    Hi,
    I can see that the norm for most is to take a new screen grab
    when hitting Tab; however, on a project that we are workign on, we
    are narrating information about a set of fields in an application,
    and prefer to ffill them all in on one slide.

  • How to use TAB key  rolling on the rank of a JTabbedPane ?

    I hope I can use TAB key to switch the different option item , how to do this ?
    Liwei

    You need to use a key listener. Something like:
            static class myKeyListener implements KeyListener
                    //KeyListener reuired methods
                    public void keyPressed(KeyEvent e)
                            int a = e.getKeyCode();
                            //Check if they pressed tab
                            if (a == e.VK_TAB)
                                   //Do whatever
                    public void keyReleased(KeyEvent e)
                    public void keyTyped(KeyEvent e)
            }Then, put "myTabbedPane.add(myInstanceOfMyKeyListener" up where you're creating the pane, replacing "myTabbedPane" and "myInstanceOfMyKeyListener" with whatever variables you're using.

  • Access table cells using tab key with iterators

    Hi,
    I use a tableview with iterator and allow users to mouseclick certain column cells. I capture these user interactions using server event "onCellClick". But I cannot access these cells using tab key instead of mouse click. But tab key is a must for visibly challenged users.      Is there any way to access table cells using tab keys (with iterators)?
    I use icons in those cells to replace  check box and change the icons to differentiate checked/unchecked status.

    Hi Craig,
    Thanks for your effort.
    But I was able to solve my problem. I don't think I gave all the information to simulate my problem in your environment. I used images in certain table cells and was not able to access those cells using tab key or access key. Tag <b><img></b> doesn't have the attributes <b>tabindex</b> and <b>access key</b>.
    I solved the problem by surrounding the <b><img></b> by anchor tag <<b>A>,</b> which has both attributes. I did these changes within the iterator method <b>RENDER_CELL_START</b> using CL_BSP_BEE_TABLE.
    In the event handling, I had to do separate processing for  mouse click event and key press event for those cells.
    For visibly challenged users:
    They can access those cells by tab key or access key and the key press event is used to capture when they hit enter key.
    So this problem is irrelevant to service packages (SP38,..).

  • Why can't I use the tab key to highlight links on a webpage?

    In previous versions of FF and in other browsers, I can use the tab key to navigate through all the links on a webpage - I can't seem to do this with FF5, the tab key will only highlight the address bar, search bar, and any form fields within a webpage.
    Using the tab key to navigate through links on a page is an accessibility feature, and I often use it to show hidden skip links at the top of a webpage for users who prefer to use the keyboard over a mouse and for assistive technologies.
    Is this something that can be turned back on in preferences? Or is there a reason why it was removed from this version?

    It can be fixed in Mac OS X Tiger preferences (Keyboard -> "all controls") or try a ctr-F7

  • How do you navigate dialogue boxes using the tab key in Photoshop CS6 on Mac OS X Mavericks?

    I know that seems really 101 and obvious, but I worked in Photoshop on a PC for many years, and using the tab key to navigate through every field/radial button/dropdown menu/etc. was never an issue. On the Mac OS X however, it only navigates through certain fields within a dialogue box. And before the guaranteed suggestion to change my Mac OS X Keyboard preferences to allow full keyboard access to "All Controls" instead of "Text Boxes and Lists Only", I have already tried this setting which did not resolve my issue.
    Does/has anyone out there worked between both platforms and had this issue as well? I'm a Mac guy through and through, but I must say, this is the one thing that I think PC has a slight edge on. It's incredibly frustrating to have my keyboard workflow interrupted because I can't simply tab over to a certain field that is in a dialogue box which I'm currently working in...
    Here are my details:
    Photoshop CS6 (13.0.6)
    Mac OS X Mavericks (10.9.1)
    Applies to all filetypes as the issue is regarding dialogue boxes and not files themselves.
    No error message.
    Normal use.
    It works on PC, but not on Mac.
    2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor
    8 GB of memory
    719 GB of space available on my main HD
    This has never worked in any version of Photoshop I have used on any version of Mac OS X, but has worked consistently on every version of Photoshop that I have used on every version of Windows I've used (up to Windows 7)
    I hope this provides enough information to get the ball rolling on this. I fear that there is no answer that will resolve the issue, but before I throw in the towel, I figured it was worth trying this forum since my web searches have turned up absolutely nothing of help.
    Thanks in advance for your time and help.
    Best,
    Tim

    Thanks for your input.  Since Safe Mac's Adware Removal tool has done a very good job of cleaning out the junk and
    letting me run better, I'm happy for now.
    However, I appreciate your judgement and I am working on evaluating Safari vs FireFox vs Chrome.  I've had some trouble using FireFox with
    LastPass which works very well under Chrome.  But that is only one data point.  Most of my Ram troub;e os related to the number of windows
    and tabs I open.  I've tried comparing the three browsers for how back each reacts.
    I multiply windows and tabs because as I surf the web, I discover things I want and don't want to lose them.  However, I need a tool more useful
    and structured than bookmarks to be able to record things of interest to make them easy to return to and find later.

  • Tab key and lookup table

    Hi,
    How to use the 'Tab' key to open a lookup table, E.g. BP Code, Name?
    Alternatively, how to use the 'Tab' key to call a formatted search? I hope to follow the standard in SBO and do away the Shift-F2.
    I am using VB and 2004B. Your input will be appreciated.

    I think you can mimic every user action with UIAPI.
    Therefore, e.g. in Sales Order Form you activate the BPCode item (.Click) and hit Tab (.SendKeys(vbTab)).
    You could also try clicking the the iconitem ("67") next to BPCode.
    If you want to assign a Choose From List (CFL) to an item of your choice using UIAPI then you should wait for 2005.
    Shift-F2 is standard in SBO UI for launching FSs, why would you like to disable it?
    If you want to enable tabbing to kick-off an existing  FS, then you should capture the tabbing event (et_KEY_DOWN) in your item and then use SendKeys for sending Shift-F2 to keyboard.
