Java Event Timing / Scheduling Question

Hi everyone,
Looking for some pointers in the right direction. I'm writing a program that controls a hardware device to operate outputs at specific times in a timeline defined by the user. The delays between events are not regular and may vary from 1/10th of a second to several seconds or even minutes apart. I was wondering what the best way to implement the timing / event handling component of my program might be?
I was thinking of storing the timings in an array, and then sequentially looping through that array and passing each time delay to one java.util.Timer object, and then firing the appropriate event for each, and then loading in the next time delay and so-on until all events have been fired.
Is there a better way?
Richard.

The delays will never be less than 1/10th of a
second, and very unlikely to be more than a couple of
minutes. Are there any problems passing very large
delays (say an hour as an extreme example) to
Thread.Sleep()?No, that's not a problem.
>
I could possibly load my timing data and other event
parameters into a result set. (Thinking of storing
each sequence as a series of database records).
To answer your question, the user specifies each
delay individually. Say event one must fire at 0
seconds, the next at 3.7, the next at 6.2 seconds,
and so-on.So that is 3.7 seconds after the start, or is it 3.7 seconds after the previous event was fired?

  • Event Base Scheduling In ODI

    Hi,
    I have two question:-
    1) is there any concept like event based scheduling in odi??
    2)I have two two scenario scheduled at different time.I want if the first scheduling is complete the next scheduleing will start(otherwise not).Is it possible in odi?
    If yes then please reply how??
    Thanks

    1) You can use some tools in your package that wait for the event. Ex : "Odi File Wait" (the event is a file) ; "Odi Wait for Data" (the event is an satisfied SQL Statement ) ; ODI Wait for Child Session (the event is another ODI Session)
    Your ODI scenario will be always in "run state", but it will just wait the event before executing the data flow.
    2) I assume you can do this with LOAD PLAN (available in ODI 11g)

  • Java event model and dialog

    I have a question about Java event handlers. My understanding is that all event handlers are executed by the same event thread, one at a time. How does one then explain the situation where the action for a button press is opening up a dialog pane which has a button of its own (along with an action handler defined for the button) and then wating for the dialog pane to close? It seems like the event thread will have to pause while executing the event handler of the main button, then execute the event handler of the button inside the dialog pane, then resume executing the event handler of the main button. How is that possible?
    JZ

    Interesting..says another event pump will run while the one invoking the dialog is blocked. Two thoughts. First, what "blocks" the first one? Is it that the JDialog code, in the .show() call uses the EventQueue.push() to put its own version of an eventque in place and while that is there, the other one is blocked automatically? Or does it somehow have to put in a loop on the first one while it puts in its own event que, to block the first one? I am a little unsure of how the first one gets blocked.
    Another thought, when a dialog (modal) shows up and puts its own event que in place, if a button in that dialog spawns another modal dialog, does that second modal dialog do the same thing? I would guess it does, seems fitting. Just curious and haven't got the java source handy at the moment.

  • Custom Events and Scheduling more than once

    Hi,
    in BO 4.1, I successfully triggered WebI Report instance generation by a "Custom Event" through scheduling.
    Now, we have the requirement that the report should not be triggered only once but always when the event is triggered.
    At first glance, this looks tricky bc. in order that the report "reacts" to the event, the report itself must be scheduled with the event (it gets an instance "pending" that "wait + reacts" to the event). So it looks like we need schedule the report always manually with "event" before it is ready to react to the event specified in the scheduling.
    Is there any user-friendly trick to make the report react upon every fired event without having to "schedule" the report manually with the event?
    (Similar to schedule daily, just that the event is the trigger, note a daytime...)
    Best Regards

    Hi Florian,
    What is the frequency set under Recurrence option for the report instance?
    Can you give an idea like after how much time the event can be triggered?
    For example, if you are expecting the event to change in an hour, you can schedule the recurrence as hourly or you can specify something like 0 hours and 15 minutes or something like that.
    In that case, once the event is fired, your report instance will be ready to trigger after 15 minutes for the next run.
    Would suggest you to sync with the BO administrator as concurrent triggering of large number of instances can give load on Job Servers.
    Hope it will help in some way.
    Regards,
    Yuvraj

  • Java app is writing question marks instead of extended characters

    People,
    since I've installed an Sun E3000 with Solaris9 I'm having problems with accents (extended characters) in my java application: - it writes question marks instead of accents.
    This machine used to be Solaris 2.6 and we formatted/installed Solaris9 and got the problem since then.
    My application uses a thin driver to connect to Oracle9i database, and via unix I can call sqlplus and insert chr(199) and SELECT it () with no problems, but application writes ? in nohup.out.
    If you can point me in any direction, please let me know.
    Regards, Orlando.

    I'm pretty sure that the default locale "C" corresponds to the 7-bit US-ASCII character set. Again, this is all the methaphorical shot in the dark, but it's the only time that I've seen this happen. Sun's own documentation says to use something other than C or US ASCII if international or special characters will be needed.
    Here is my /etc/default/init for ISO 8859-15.
    TZ=US/Eastern
    CMASK=022
    LC_COLLATE=en_US.ISO8859-15
    LC_CTYPE=en_US.ISO8859-1
    LC_MESSAGES=en_US.ISO8859-1
    LC_MONETARY=en_US.ISO8859-15
    LC_NUMERIC=en_US.ISO8859-15
    LC_TIME=en_US.ISO8859-15
    If the system that you're using can be rebooted, try changing the /etc/default/init file to something like the above, but with the specific for your locale. Obviously, en_US is not your area, but I have no idea what Brazil's would be.

  • Translating Visual Basic Events into Java Events

    I'm in the process of porting a Visual Basic application to Java. Now, most of it is pretty straight forward, since good OO practice is evident in the original VB source. With a good dose of refactoring along the way the Java version is looking pretty good too.
    However, I'm having a problem with events. Here's a snuppet of one of a VB class that generates events and one that uses it:
    (Invoices.cls)
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    Event AddItem(ItemID as String)
    Event RemoveItem(ItemID as String)
    Private m_Items as Collection
    Public Sub Add(ItemID as String)
       m_Items.Add ItemID
       RaiseEvent AddItem(ItemID)
    End Sub
    Public Sub Remove(ItemID as String)
       m_Items.Remove ItemID
       RaiseEvent RemoveItem(ItemID)
    End Sub
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-and
    (OrderBook.cls)
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
    Private WithEvents m_Invoices as Invoices
    Private Sub m_Invoices_AddItem(ItemID as String)
       CalculateTotals
    End Sub
    Private Sub m_Invoices_RemoveItem(ItemID as String)
       CalculateTotals
    End Sub
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-Can anyone give me a few pointers on what the Java equivalent to this VB code is?
    Thanks,
    Vince.

    Hi,
    There are few main things involved in a Java event delivery
    1. The event source
    2. The event listener
    3. The even data
    4. Registration
    5. The event delivery process
    I don't know the VB syntax, but any way it gives a good idea of what you wish to achieve.
    Here the Invoice class is basically the event source. And the OrderBook class is the event listener. To proceed further you will have to specify (define) the event listener first. Secondly you will have to create an event object which contains the data to be delvered via the event.
    1. Specifying the event listener interface
    public Interface ItemOperationListener
    public void itemAdded (ItemOperationEvent ioe);
    public void itemRemoved (ItemOperationEvent ioe);
    2. The event class
    public class ItemOperationEvent extends java.util.EventObject
    String item = null;
    public ItemOperationevent(Object source, String Item)
    super(source);
    this.item = item;
    public String getItem()
    return item;
    3. Creating and firing the event from the event source.
    public class Invoice
    private collection items; // any collection
    // to hold all the event listeners , this way u can define > 1
    // listeners
    javax.swing.event.EventListenerList listenerList = new javax.swing.event.EventListenerList();
    public void addItem(String item)
    items.add(item);
    // update the listeners
    fireItemAdded(item);
    public void removeItem(String item)
    items.add(item);
    // update the listeners
    fireItemRemoved(item);
    public void addItemOperationListener(itemOperationListener ioe)
    listenerList.add(ioe);
    public void removeItemOperationListener(itemOperationListener ioe)
    listenerList.remove(ioe);
    public void fireItemAdded(String item)
    ItemOperationEvent e = null;
    Object[] listeners = listenerList.getListenerList();
    // Process the listeners last to first, notifying
    // those that are interested in this event
    for (int i = listeners.length-2; i>=0; i-=2) {
    if (listeners== ItemOperationListener.class) {
    if (e == null)
    e = new ItemOperationEvent(this,item);
    ((ItemOperationlistener)listeners[i+1]).itemAdded(e);
    public void fireItemRemoved(String item)
    ItemOperationEvent e = null;
    Object[] listeners = listenerList.getListenerList();
    // Process the listeners last to first, notifying
    // those that are interested in this event
    for (int i = listeners.length-2; i>=0; i-=2) {
    if (listeners[i] == ItemOperationListener.class) {
    if (e == null)
    e = new ItemOperationEvent(this,item);
    ((ItemOperationlistener)listeners[i+1]).itemRemoved(e);
    4. The listener and the registration .
    public class OrderBook implements ItemOperationListener
    private Invoice invoice; // invoice instance.
    public OrderBook()
    // register for event updates .
    invoice.additemOperationListener(this);
    public void itemAdded(ItemOperationEvent ioe)
    String tobeAdded = ioe.getItem();
    calculate();
    public void itemRemoved(ItemOperationEvent ioe)
    String tobeRemoved = ioe.getItem();
    calculate();
    public void calculate()
    I hope this gives a picture of the standard method of event delivery in java . However you can even follow the Observer, Observable pattern (see the documentation for java.util.Observer, Observable).
    Hope this helps,
    Manish.

    Hi Linc, thanks for this ... it is weird, we tried this previously, but we only did a restart.
    This morning our Mac was 'off' even though we hadn't turned it off, (maybe a power outage) I restarted and ran the calpatch immediately, and it worked !!
    it is embarrassing, because as a service engineer, I am always telling customers to restart and even power down completely before trying again.

  • Need help with Java, have a few questions about my Applet

    Purpose of the program: To create a mortgage calculator that will allow the user to input the loan principal then select 1 of 3 choices from a combo-box (7 years @ 5.35%, 15 years @ 5.50%, 30 years @ 5.75%).
    Problem: My program was working properly (so I thought). I can get the program to properly compile and run through TextPad. However, I noticed that when the user clicks the calculate more than once (with the same input), it slightly alters the output calculations. So that is my first question, Why is it doing that?  How can I get it only calculate that information once unless the user changes it etc?
    My next question is regarding my exit button. I was told by my instructor (who has already stated he won't help any of us) that my exit button does not work for an applet and only for an application. So, how can I create an exit button that will work with an applet? I thought I did it right but I can't find any resources online for this.
    Next question, why isn't my program properly validating invalid input? My program should only allow numeric input and nothing more.
    And last question, when invalid input is entered and the user clicks calculate, why isn't my JOptionPane window for error messages not displaying?
    I know my code is a little long so I have to post this in two messages. Please don't criticize me for what I am doing, that is why I am learning and have come to this forum for help. Thanks

  • Problem with event based scheduling

    Hi,
    We are having a ETL job running everynight, so i need to have daily
    report as soon as my ETL job is finished. For that we have run some
    script to create a event file after completion of ETL job. And by using
    this event file we have scheduled a report that runs after this event
    file is created. Now the problem is that the scheduled report is
    generated before the ETL job is finished. This seems to be working fine
    till last month, but this month we are facing this issue. my question
    is why the scheduler is triggered before the event file is created
    (event file is created after the completion of ETL job)
    Do anybody faced this iss
    FYI
    We are on BO XI 3.1 with no SP's and FP's and on windows environment.
    Do anybody faced this issue?Any advise is appreciated.
    Thanks,

    Hi,
    We are also on BO XI 3.1 with no SP's and FP's. We create Event files after the ETL jobs are completed. These files are used to create BO Events (File), which are used as scheduling criteria before the Reports can run. These files are deleted daily before the next files are created, something you might want check.

  • Java.nio read/write question

    Hello,
    I just started to learn the java.nio package so I decided to make a simple Echo server. I made a client which reads a line from the keyboard, sends it to the server and the server returns it. It all works except one little detail. Here's little code from the server:
                                 int n = client.read(buffer);
                                 if ( n > 0)
                                     buffer.flip();
                                     client.write(buffer);
                                     Charset charset = Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1");
                                     CharsetDecoder decoder = charset.newDecoder();
                                     charBuffer = decoder.decode(buffer);
                                     System.out.println(charBuffer.toString());
                                     buffer.clear();
                                  }So that works, I send the data and then I receive it back. But only for the client. I also wanted the server to print the line which is the reason for the charset and the decoder. The above code however prints only a blank line. Thus I tried this:
                                 int n = client.read(buffer);
                                 if ( n > 0)
                                     buffer.flip();
                                     Charset charset = Charset.forName("ISO-8859-1");
                                     CharsetDecoder decoder = charset.newDecoder();
                                     charBuffer = decoder.decode(buffer);
                                     System.out.println(charBuffer.toString());
                                     client.write(buffer);
                                     buffer.clear();
                                  }Or in other words I just moved the write() part downwards. So far so good, now the server was actually printing the lines that the client was sending but nothing was sent back to the client.
    The question is how to make both, the send back line and the print line on the server side to work as intended. Also a little explanation why the events described above are happening is going to be more than welcome :)
    Thanks in advance!

  • Skillbuilders Plug In-Schedule Question?

    Hi,
    I have a question regarding the Schedule Plug In. It is a good demo. But I have no clue how to write the SQL to extract the data of Start Date, End date, Duration Seconds and Calendar Summary (From API function). I have tried to use action - compute but the field of schedule concatenate together.
    Schedule: 201303150900|201303151100|7200|FREQ=DAILY;INTERVAL=1;
    The demo suggests us to use that SQL statement but it does not work?
    SELECT NVL(evts.title,'No Title Specified') AS display,
    dts.column_value
    FROM events evts,
    TABLE(sbip_schedule.dates(schedule)) dts
    WHERE evts.id = :P1_EVENT_ID
    Do you have any clue?
    Thanks!

    The point is I do not know what are the specific field names inside the API Plug in schedule? Any idea?
    The link is as follows:

  • How to use Java SDK to schedule a report in business objects

    hi guys i am having a scenario , were the Java SDK will be passing the parameters dynamically to the report in business objects . the Java SDK is kicked by the file based events. this Java SDK will be on the unix server and the business object is also on the unix server. I am having the crystal reports in boe which need to be triggered by the Java SDK . such that the report is scheduled to a particular location on the unix  for every week,when the java passes the parameters to the report in boe
    Edited by: americansalt on Nov 4, 2010 11:30 AM

    You can do this by using the BOE SDK. Here are some samples:

  • Configuring automatic messages/events from scheduler to send email

    Hi ALL,
    I'm looking  for configuring events like the following:
    1. Configure an event to send an email after running the scdeuled report if the report data is empty.
    2. Configure an event to send an email if the scheduled report failed to generate instance to the mailer list.
    Is it possible to configure events like this. Please point some docs if available.
    I'm using BOE XI R2 version.
    Thanks,
    Rams.

    Is it possible to send a consolidated email once all the scheduled reports are run and reports stored in a file location.
    Message could be say:
    ' reporttitle1',
    'reporttitle2'
    etc..
    have been successfully run and stored in the location.
    Please suggest whether it could be done via java api.
    I'm using BUsiness Objects Enterprise XIR2.
    Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Rams.
