Car spinning graphic animation maybe best done in FCE?

My initial concept for a project I am working on that shows an actual photographed car spinning around, was to use the 'bank' of cameras taking stills approach which I could duplicate by shooting the car in the studio with a white cyclic floor and background and simply dolly the camera around the car. I want to use an actual car and not a 3D rendering like this example:
http://www.anistock.com/3d-animation-of-car-spinning-dpi4824.html
My initial concept also supposed that this would be best handled in Flash, but now that I'm becoming more familiar with FCE, I do think FCE could be the software to do the job.
Anyone have experience with this type of animation using photo stills or frames extracted from a movie? All input is appreciated for tutorials or other insights into making this work.
TIA,
Ken

Hi -
This is a very ambitious project to attempt, and I think once you try it you will understand why the effect is done with 3D models of the cars.
Even if you can find a studio with a large enough cyc wall, lay curved dolly track, maintain a perfectly consistent speed throughout the dolly, how do you avoid seeing the camera rig in reflective parts of the car? How do you light so that there is no change in the reflection of lighting in the glass windshield as you dolly around the car?
I would think that even in the most optimum lighting/shooting/stage set ups, you would still need to spend a substantial time doing frame by frame retouch of the shot (extending and making the background uniform, removing the dolly tracks from the shot, etc.)
Even if you do it with a still camera bank, there is substantial retouching involved:
http://vimeo.com/4405211
But I don't mean to discourage you. It is certainly possible. If you simply want to do the spin portion of the demo clip you showed, that would make it easier as you are dealing with fewer source frames. It is just quite a challenge.

• What is the best Mac choice for creating pro-level art/graphics/animation?

I'm an artist who does a lot of work with Adobe Creative Suite CS5, as well as some video editing and lots of animation. I've been using a 2007 model 15-inch Macbook Pro for the last 4 years, and it seems like it's time to upgrade...it runs burning hot all the time, and the battery dies pretty quick when the cord falls out. It seems like the whole thing is running a little slow, which is probably because I have a TON of graphics/animation/video software on there, but I need each and every program.
My question is, what is the best new Mac to purchase to replace this one? I want to make sure it lasts as long as possible, and will be able to handle the programs I use now. My first thought is to get another Macbook Pro, because of the portability, and just add on all the higher RAM, etc to customize it. But my husband suggested looking into the Mac Mini, because it's a lot cheaper, and we're a little strapped for cash at the moment. Would that serve the purpose? Or is a Macbook Pro really the best choice for what I need it to do?
I'd love to hear suggestions from other artists or graphics people. What do you recommend?

For a "cash strapped" person, unless you already
have a monitor, one of the new iMacs may be
a better choice. If you do have a monitor, I would
suggest the dual core i7 equipt MacMini. Since you state
you are using CS5 stuff, most Adobe apps,
Photoshop for example, do not make effective
use of multiple cores. Also, using any of the
Adobe products, regardless of which computer
you decide on, get as much RAM as you can afford.

I accidentally installed the Babylone search engine tool bar while dowloading a program and when I realized that Firefox had been substituded I tried to get back and even ran a restore for the system. Since then, everytime I try to reisnstall Firefox, there is a message that says that Firefox can harm my system and when I ignore it, it says that maybe I don't have permits or licenses for it. • Strictly FC or can it be done in FCE?

I am running FCE, and am wondering if it is possible to replace a background color with something else (green screen effect.) I know it's possible in FC, but not sure if it can be done with FCE.
P.S. - I'm running FCE 2.0.3, but have access to FCE HD

You could try it with a luma key. Black is very difficult to key out because inevitably the subject will have some shadow areas. These will tend to disappear as well. White is easier to to do a luma key. If the background is pure white, much brighter than the subject, it can be luma key.
All these things are described in great detail in the Help menu PDF file that is the FCE user manual. Green screen, keying, all of it is in there, and very easily and quickly searchable.

• Best way to take Flash graphics/animations on web sites to HTML5 to play on all devices?

I have a number of web sites that have different elements I created in Flash. Galleries, menus, animations, etc. I need to make them playable on smart phones...including iPhones, and iPads/tablets. I don't want to go the "publish it as an app" route. Such as PhoneGap. Are there other ways to do it? Or is this the work flow that everyone is going to?
Thanks

This is a very abstract question. Flash CS6 and CC support CreateJS which can convert some types of simple projects to HTML5+JS for you. Download a trial and see how it works for you. Outside this the answer will be on a site to site basis. If the entire site is Flash, you should be rewriting the HTML5 yourself where you don't need Flash, such as basic images, text, backgrounds, etc. But again, the complexity of the project greatly determines how much work you'll need to do. There is no Staples Easy Button on this subject.

• Need suggestion on how to do 3D spinning title animation

Hello all experts,
I need suggestion on how to do 3D rotating title animation. Let me explain what i wanted to do.
The end product is the word WELCOME.
But I want to animate it in such a way that the alphabelt W first appear as nothing from inside the screen to appear in the screen (that means zoom from small to big, is it called zoom out ?). In the process of zooming out, I want the W to have a thickness & it spins very fast along the horizontal X-axis and stops at the screen with the alphbelt W.
Then the whole process repeat with E, and I have WE. It then repeats with L and I have WEL. This whole thing repeats until it forms the word WELCOME.
Any suggestions ? Is there an inbuilt preset for this ?
If not, if I do from scratch, do I need a separate track for each alphabelt ?
Thank you very much.
Cheers.

You would have to build this one from scratch, but it's pretty easy.
Work on the whole word first to get the basic movement, then play with the Timing settings in the Inspector. To have the letters do this one after the other use the Sequence setting. Typically you would set it to the number of letters in your word plus 1 -so your welcome should have a Sequence value of 8. You can of course set it to whatever you think looks best.
Give it a go and let us know how you get on. Don't forget to save your new effect!
Thanks Holmes but where do I find the Sequence settings ?

• Motion Graphics (Animated Graphic) Like a Circle Being Drawn – Addable in PS Video Workflow?

Hi, i create video tutorials in Photoshop CC*, only of screencasts. Sometimes i insert a red circle around important parts of the screen.
I would like to show the circle being drawn bit by bit – not the whole circle slowly fading in, but being drawn around the subject over time. Also interesting might be arrows that build up and bounce a bit. (This NOT like a button being pushed.)
I didn't find online good info how to create an addable circle being drawn or sth like that. I found verbose tutorials about movie title animation in Photoshop, but they don't help to create a circle being drawn.
A circle being drawn around a point of interest - this is easily possible for instance with Camtasia – but i would love to add the animation within Photoshop. It should be possible if the animation is a smart object within a TIFF or PSD file, but i don't know how to create animated files like that.
Are there animated files like that available somewhere? Best would be vector files that could be changed (for instance contour width, contour colour, speed etc.).
Or how could i create them myself with Photoshop? (I have no experience with Premiere or Illustrator.)
Thanks!

Henrik Nerr wrote:
Actually i know of that repeating thing after free transform, but didn't think it up here. I wonder, if you do that with a vector object and the result was turned into one smart object, you could then transform it into an ellipse?
There's no reason why not, but you'd have to animate as a perfect circle, an then distort into a flatter ellipse at the end, which sounds kind of klunky. But as is the way of these things, you have given me another idea. I've never done this, but I can't think of any reason why the layers that make up the animation shouldn't have layer masks. I bet the penny just dropped and you can see where I am going? :-)
It would need some manual input, but you start with your ellipse, and copy it whole as many times as you need frames. The layers will have incrementing names, which we will take advantage of later. Group those layers to keep them tidy.
Now use Transform Again (or Step & Repeat) on a black segment the radius of which will be big enough to completely cover the long side of the ellipse. The resulting layers will also have incrementing names, and they should match the ellipse layer names. Group these to keep them tidy.
So you'll start with this (Note I am using only four frames to keep this demo simple)
After Step and repeat you'll have
Turn off the Mask Group, select layer 'Ellipse 1', Ctrl click one of the mask layers (which I have ballsed up by forgetting to rename), and add a layer mask to Ellipse 1. You'll see where we are going now.
Select the mask layer you just used, and the mask layer next to it, and merge them. Repeat the last step, and continue for all Ellipse layers. You'll end up with something like this (but with heaps more layers)
Note that you end up with just the one Mask layer, because you have been merging them as you go. To produce the animation start with all Ellipse layers off, and as you progress to the next frame, turn on the next Ellipse layer. Unlike with normal animations, we keep all preceding layers switched on because we are building, and not moving.
OK, here's the clever bit. Unlink all the Ellipse layer, layer masks (click on the chain icons.) Make sure the layer content, and not the layer masks are active (double white line around the thumbnail). Select All the Ellipse layers, and Free Transform to fit the next item to be highlighted. If I recall correctly, using FT on multiple layers is a fairly recent thing. Can anyone comment on that? If you are thinking ahead, make sure the Mask layers are big enough to cover the largest item you might need to highlight. These layers are always tuned off for the final animation, so they can be as big as you like.
I'd be inclined to keep master copies of both Ellipse and Mask groups, and work off a new copy for each highlight.
Personally, I'd just use After Effects, but if you can't get use of it, it is at least possible with Photoshop.

• IMac or MacPro for 3D graphics/animation work?

For 3D graphics and animation work, mainly using Bryce, Hexagon and Poser, I'm curious about the practical difference between a high-end iMac, like the quad core model, versus a MacPro. Is the major difference between the two builds just the graphics card being built-in with the iMac, while the graphics card or cards are separate in the MacPro? If so, how does that impact performance, especially for big rendering tasks?
Doesn't the graphics card mainly handle constant-refresh tasks like playing games, rather than large episodic number-crunching jobs like rendering? For my needs it seems like the processor and RAM are the key factors, which would put the iMac on par with a MacPro. Or maybe I'm totally off base with that assessment.
Any thoughts? I'm trying to decide which system I need. Thanks.

rendering has nothing to do with the graphic card. So yes it's processor+ram.
you can expect "similar" results if you are comparing a single processor 2.66 MacPro with the i7 iMac.
However, the Macpro is available in 2-processor configuration, Higher Ram maximum, upgradable video card....
The top-of-the-line Macpro (2x2.93/6GB ram) is about twice as fast as the iMac i7 (1x2.8/4GB) in rendering tests with Strata3D.

• Advices about graphic card choice (best supported in Arch) ?

Hello,
I was running a desktop with Arch and a nVidia 7900GS but recently, my 7900GS died
So I was looking for a new cheap graphic card who could decode 1080p and who have an HDMI port.
Somebody told me that the AMD HD 5450 could be a good choice, or the upcoming nVidia GT 430 could be a nice choice too
But what about the support of theses new hardware in Archlinux ?
Which of theses have the best drivers ? the best performances under Arch ?
Thank you for your support

Not the latest Optimus based cards though, nvidia have just as much as said "we won't support this on Linux in the foreseeable future", leaving purchasers of such laptops with a deadweight which only pulls power. All rendering is done through the Intel card....

• Vector graphics & animation using Flex

Hi,
I want to draw a vector graphics in flex 3 then later on I
need to do some animation on it. But I encounter some problem and I
cannot solve it and I get this error message "1120: Access of
undefined property circle". Thanks... Here is the code:
<mx:Script>

import flash.display.*;
private var circle:Shape = new Shape()
var xPos:Number = 100;
var yPos:Number = 100;
var radius:Number = 50;
circle.graphics.beginFill(0xFF8800);
circle.graphics.drawCircle(xPos, yPos, radius);
addChild(circle);

</mx:Script>

You can declare and initialize variables in a
tag outside a function, but manipulating them must be done in a
function. In this case, having a function for the creationComplete,
or perhaps the initialize events works well.
Also, you can't add shapes by themselves to the app, you must
wrap them in a UIComponent.

<mx:Application xmlns:mx="
http://www.adobe.com/2006/mxml"
creationComplete="init()">
<mx:Script>

import mx.core.UIComponent;
import flash.display.*;
private var circle:Shape = new Shape();
private function init():void{
var xPos:Number = 100;
var yPos:Number = 100;
var radius:Number = 50;
circle.graphics.beginFill(0xFF8800);
circle.graphics.drawCircle(xPos, yPos, radius);
var comp:UIComponent = new UIComponent();
comp.addChild(circle);
addChild(comp);

</mx:Script>

• Animating Bitmaps, best practices?

Im starting to develop apps and i would like to know if theres a best practice to use bitmaps for animations, should i use 1 sprite object and redraw the bitmapdata each time it should change or should i use several sprite objects and use visible = false, what is better and have anybody found a better way to do this?, please share, Thanks!

I've heard of people using both methods with good results. I'm not sure what the best way is, but personally I like to use the one bitmap and redraw its data, rather than have several bitmaps. Maybe it's just me, but I find the latter method a bit messy.

My Nokia N97 was sent back for a repair a number of weeks ago.
I have had numerous problems with the unit, ( multiple faults/repairs) but i won't go into that.
My son was recently adnitted into Hospital, and was in intensive care.
The N97's internal microphone stopped working, and i was unable to hear callers.
I arranged a repair and to Nokia's credit, the unit was picked up the next day.
I was left without a phone, and desperately needed one, as my wife and i were at the hospital for 24hrs, doing 12hrs each.
I contacted Nokia on 17/09/11, and explained my predicament.
I spoke to a gentleman named Damian, who could not have been more helpful.
Suffice to say, not only was i offered an alternative handset, Damian even tried to get the handset, to me the following day!
The handset arrived this morning, and i am so grateful.
This was customer service, way beyond my expectations, and i am so humbled by the kindness shown towards me.
My faith in Nokia has been restored, and this shows what a great compamy they are.
I cannot recommend the Nokia Care service, highly enough.
Thank you.

Yes it is nice to see some positive feedback, I had my N97 replaced a few months ago, but sadly it is still a very problematic bit of kit !! None the less well done Nokia for customer service
