Card reader on thin client

following problem: we are using thin clients in our citrix environment and want to use a cardreader connected to it. the user swipes through an airline boarding pass or a member card and we want to parse the input an display it in a web app (java/tomcat based).
as I cannot install anything on the thin client, I guess the only way to go is an applet.
does anybody know of a good product to do so (either open source or commercial).
thanks,
uwe geercken

You are looking for advice about what brand of card reader to use? That doesn't sound like a Java Programming problem to me.

  • Access to smart card reader on Win 8.1 RDP Host

    Hi,
    I have a customer that has a couple of Windows 8.1 Pro computers, that has a smart card reader in the local keyboard.
    Until a few months ago, they could RDP to the desktop computer from a RDP client such as another Windows PC, a Mac or a mobile device.
    The problem is now that when accessing the desktop computer (with the smart card reader keyboard) from a RDP client, the smart card reader is not available in the RDP session anymore. This prevents them from logging on to an application in the network that
    requires their smart card.
    Can someone perhaps point me in a direction where this can be solved, either with the MS RDP host or with some 3rd party RDP host applications?
    (Teamviewer or similar remote support applications works, but that is not what the customer want...)
    Since it worked like a charm up until 2-3 months ago, there must have been some update to Win 8.1 that prevents this by default?
    Thanks in advance,
    /Mikael Forslund

    Hi Mikael Forslund,
    I am supposing you attempted to use smart card reader connected directly to Remote Desktop terminal. Basically your RDP session should redirected smart card reader to the client side and will not see readers connected to the host side
    because enable Safety equipment such like smart card reader will cause highly insecure and that is not by design.
    We suggest using smart card reader on local RDP client for your issue.
    “The reverse is also true; if you RDP into a session from the start you will never see any local smartcard readers as Winscard will detect it’s running in an RDP session and no calls to Winscard will ever reach the local PC/SC layer –
    everything will be redirected to the connecting client.”

  • Installing Adobe Reader on a Thin Client

    I have 27 Thin clients (HP t5639w) to set up in the next day or two... the problem: right out of the box, I am unable to install Adobe Reader on them. I have made room to install by using a flash drive to increase RAM, and Reader appears to have successfully loaded, but each time I try to open after install I get the following error message: "Font Capture: AcroRd32.exe Application Error.... The exception unknown software. Exception (0xc06d007e) occurred in the application at location 0x7c812afb."
    I've tried to contact HP customer support - unfortunately, they refer me to the HP website and tell me to download the version there. It's the same version I've tried to install - no luck. I have installed other software on the Thin Clients successfully, but I'm only having an issue with Reader.
    Anyone else have a similar issue? Any ideas?

    Here's the process:
    ·         Download Adobe to USB drive
    ·         Remove write filter – reboot
    ·         Create temporary TEMP and TMP folders on C: drive
    ·         Change Windows TEMP variables (both TEMP and TMP) to a folder on the “Hard Disk” – Reboot (Make a note of values before changing).
    ·         Install Adobe Reader – Reboot
    ·         Run Adobe Reader – If runs reboot
    ·         Replace TEMP and TMP variable entries (Usually Z:\TEMP and Z:\TMP respectively) – Reboot
    ·         Delete temporary TEMP and TMP folders – reboot
    ·         Re-enable write filter
    This worked for me!

  • How to create mandatory (read-only) profile for Terminal Services user (HP Thin Client) on Server2003... aaarrgghhh!

    I've been tearing my hair out for a couple of days now...
    I'm trying to create a mandatory profile for users logging in from hp thin clients on a 2003 server at a school.
    I've set up a prototype user, then copied the proto user's NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN and renamed
    NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.DAT_unused.
    At that point, logging in as the prototype user looks ok.  It was my understanding that renaming NTUSER.DAT to NTUSER.MAN would make it a mandatory profile, and the user (in this case the proto user) would be unable to change it.  However, in this
    case the user can still modify the desktop and those modifications are preserved across logins.  The NTUSER.MAN file is being updated, judging by the timestamp changes.
    What am I missing?
    I've tried putting the NTUSER.MAN in the user's dir on the server
     (C:\Documents and Settings\ProtoUser),
    in the DefaultUser, and in AllUsers.
    Right now I'm getting a default, unmodifiable profile which I have no idea where it comes from.
    In case it matters, the original user and directory tree from which the NTUSER.MAN I'm trying to use has been deleted, but I wouldn't think that should matter.
    For example, I have the option to not show the security tab set in the group policy, but it is showing up.
    The Start menu is showing as the classic start menu, and I had it set for the "new" (2 column) one.
    I've got hide network places on the desktop set, but it's showing up.
    Is there a way to tell where a profile is coming from?
    I'm pretty confused at this point; any clarifications / tips would be much appreciated.
    Related questions:
      If both an NTUSER.DAT and an NTUSER.MAN exist, which is used?
      If no profile is found for a user in the normal place, what happens?

    Hi,
    Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
    A mandatory user profile is a special type of pre-configured roaming user profile that administrators can use to specify settings for users. With mandatory user profiles, a user can modify his or her desktop, but the changes are not saved when the user
    logs off. The next time the user logs on, the mandatory user profile created by the administrator is downloaded. There are two types of mandatory profiles: normal mandatory profiles and super-mandatory profiles.
    User profiles become mandatory profiles when the administrator renames the NTuser.dat file (the registry hive) on the server to NTuser.man. The .man extension causes the user profile to be a read-only profile.
    User profiles become super-mandatory when the folder name of the profile path ends in .man; for example, \\server\share\mandatoryprofile.man\.

  • Arch Linux as Thin Client, PXE, LTSP

    Hey there all, been using Arch for about a year now, from Gentoo through Zenwalk, gotta say that Arch is bar none the best so far. I think it's the way that it doesn't try to hide the system internals through abstraction (where every distro has it's own abstraction methodology).
    I'm thinking in the future that I'd like to do a network-wide deployment of "terminals" for a non-profit. I say "terminals" in because unlike a true thin client, the idea was to have PXE booting to NFS and using the local hardware more. I'm fond of the idea of centralizing system management to a single system installation, and using solid-state machines.
    VNC, NX, RDP seem to be out of the question because I need clients to have native multimedia applications like the Flash plugin, and Skype. I could see audio and video redirection becoming a pain. But having the full installation on the client doesn't seem like the right thing to do because then I've got specific machines with specific problems that I'd have to diagnose. Virtualizing an entire OS session for each user would require a powerhouse server, and then we are stuck with a graphical redirection like VNC, NX, RDP. Linux Terminal Server Project really seems to be on track, they've got a great customization method, but again, they're using XDMCP and sending raw X data over the network.
    I envision the clients as being mostly web browser-centric to interface with the necessary applications, and using software like Sun Global Desktop or NoMachine NX to connect to individual Windows applications on a Windows server when needed.
    I'm looking at the Fit-PC2 as a possible thick-client solution. It's an Intel Atom based PC with an AMD Geode graphics solution, 512MB of soldered RAM, really low energy consumption.
    The wiki doesn't seem to address having more than one client using an NFS-mounted root. If you have more than one client writing .pid and other /var files, this doesn't seem like a feasible idea.
    So I suppose that the / has to be mounted in RAM, and only the static dirs like /usr /bin /boot swap are NFS imports?
    At first the network would be homogenous, but if we add computers with differing graphics cards
    So, in summary:
    * Any clues on multiple clients using one NFS root?
    * How to autoconfigure X.org and other differing hardware?
    It sounds like a fun challenge, wondering if anyone else has tried anything like it.
    Last edited by VitaminJ (2009-10-19 00:42:31)

    I don't really know enough about this to offer any real advice, but as far as multiple machines using a single NFS root goes, you could look into mounting it on all your clients read-only, and using a union filesystem (eg aufs2, unionfs), such that you can use another partition (say on a ramdisk) to handle writes...
    Just a thought

  • Using SBO with Wyse Winterm S30 Thin Clients

    I have a customer who is using Microsoft Terminal Services via Wyse Winterm S30 Thin cllents to access SBO over a VPN.  We are experiencing excessive rolling (redisplay) when screens are refreshed. The problem is compounded if a Marketing Document contains multiple Text lines. We have two terminal servers, each with about 12 thin clients connected.
    I would appreciate feedback from anyone with experience of using thin clients, regardless of brand.

    Hi,
    Thin clients normally have a low memory allocation on the video card (8mb to 16MB) so this can be a problem.  Check to see if you can change this in the BIOS on the WYSE.  If not connect at 256 Colours to reduce this.  If you have pictures linked to products then their resolution will not be good but for SAP itself the difference is small.  Also rename the SAPSS.AVI to .old if you have not already done so so that the splash screen does not come up when logging in.
    In my multimedia testing on thin clients, unrelated to SBO, I found that both memory and processor power made a huge difference, which is contrary to thin client manufacturer claims.  As an example I used a 200MHz/64MB TC for a flash application and sound was about 3 seconds behind the image and the image update would skip 3 to 5 frames when updating.  Moving to a 800Mhz/128MB TC The frame refresh rate was almost perfect and the sound was only about 0.5 seconds behind.  I would therefore test on a more powerful thin client to see if it improves performance.
    The S30 is a 400MHz (rated @ 533 on performance by AMD).   Try a 1GHz TC with the maximum Video memory you can find.
    We are currently using VXL Itona 800Mhz/128MB and do not experience too much rolling but we are using 256 colours.
    Hope this helps.

  • Database connection encryption and integrity with ColdFusion and Oracle thin client

    As ColdFusion datasource we are using the Oracle thin client to  connect with the database. So, basically we are using a JDBC URL such as  jdbc:oracle:thin:@... and as Driver Class oracle.jdbc.OracleDriver. This works successfully however we would like to set encryption and  integrity parameters as well. In Java this is done similarly by setting a  Properties object prior to getting a connection as follows:
    Properties prop = new Properties();
    prop.put("oracle.net.encryption_client", "REQUIRED");
    prop.put("oracle.net.encryption_types_client", "( DES40 )");
    prop.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_client", "REQUESTED");
    prop.put("oracle.net.crypto_checksum_types_client", "( MD5 )");
    OracleDataSource ods = new OracleDataSource();
    ods.setProperties(prop);
    ods.setURL("jdbc:oracle:thin:@localhost:1521:main");
    Connection conn = ods.getConnection();
    Is there a way that I can pass these parameters to the ColdFusion  datasource. Ideally, I would love to do this centrally in such way that a  change to all the cfquery or cfstoredproc is not needed.
    I also know that in application servers such as Oracle AS there is an  option when creating a datasource which says "Add Properties". In there  you can add such properties. So, I was thinking of maybe creating a  JNDI DS in the app. server and then magically connecting to it but this  may have some impacts on the app.
    Besides this I was also thinking of communicating with the CF  datasource through the CF admin API (cfide.adminapi.administrator) and  also the option of extending the Oracle driver so that when CF connects  with it these params are already set.
    I would love to have your professional opinion and suggestions on this.

    I believe the thin driver actually needs the IP address (not the DNS name). Also, is "java" the name of the Oracle instance to which you are trying to connect?
    Try the following:String driver = "jdbc:oracle:thin";
    String dbIP = "W2RZ1NXG01's IP address";
    String dbPort = "1530";
    String dbSid = "java";
    String dbUser = "Admin";
    String dbPswd = "apassword";
    String cnctStr = driver + ":@" + dbIP + ":" + port + ":" + dbSid;
    try
        Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
        con = DriverManager.getConnection( cnctStr, dbUser, dbPswd );
        stmt = con.createStatement();
        stmt.executeUpdate(createString);
        stmt.close();
        con.close();
    catch(SQLException ex)
        System.err.println( "The following SQLException occurred: " + ex );
        System.err.println( "Message: " + ex.getMessage() );

  • What files do I need to download iPhone photos to a thin client (HP)? Apple Mobile Support gives 4 dll files to enable the iPhone to be detected and charged but the thin client doesn't see the camera or hard drive.

    The iTunes Installation files include 4 driver dlls that I can install on a Windows thin client to enable the iPhone to be charged.
    The iPhone hard drive or photos are not detected.  I guess I need scanner driver support to cope with the camera.
    Can anyone tell me which files from the iTune installation set are needed.
    It is not practical (or even possible?) to install the whole iTunes package.
    I've seen this question asked by a lot of people but never seen an answer.
    Please, can someone help...

    Thanks for the reply.
    A thin client is used to connect to a Terminal Server, or in my customer's case, a Citrix Server.  I need the thin client to see the iPhone as a camera and pass it to the Citrix Client so the photos can THEN be either stored on a network storage device, or e-mailed.
    Because the thin client doesn't even SEE a camera (i.e. the iPhone) it won't be able to connect to iCloud to do anything useful.
    I think the question I should be asking, is how do I give the thin client Camera Support.
    I've just seen a 2008 forum comment that said the iPhone DOESN'T handle photos through iTunes, but the PC (Scanner support) or MAC (iPhoto) handles them directly.  I should be putting the question to HP.
    This is still a good place for THIS question, because I've seen so many iPhone users asking it...
    If I get a satisfactory answer I'll post it back here.

  • Looking for an app for a credit card reader

    Looking for an app to use a credit card reader such as the square register for the Z10. Or any ohter credit card reader.
    I've been a faithful Blackberry user for over 6 years, I hope that I don't regret buying this new phone last June. Verizon tried to talk me out of buying a Blackberry. So far I have been dis-appointed in this phone.

    Hey guys get ducks in order, I'm a small business owner, I need smooth native apps or built in's that help make money for me, your voice recognition is terrible at best for my Z10, especially when my job relies heavily on making hands free calls to clients, my old 9900 worked well when you had to say numerous commands to adapt to your voice or am I not seeing that this phone does this as well, if so why do I have find it!? As well, I like others are faithful early adapters to BlackBerry, but now, getting impatient as a other devices and OS's are becoming more appealing.
    The new Square Card reader is a very good example that you should be working with them aggressively, this simplifying product is excellent for small businesses who provide mobile services, it will explode into adaptation for this sector, do not suggest an android app for use, otherwise I'll make it simpler and just get the android device instead, this solution benefits blackberry how? And if I am the rare one with this sentiment I apologize, but if I representative of a population that matters take it seriously...what do you do with this information? Remember when you start to get a bitter taste, you tend to never again, does blackberry care, show me, do not tell me!
    PS/ if you get where the future is going most business are going to move to 2 devices for employees and owner operators that have partial integration, and the only thing that keeps you BlackBerry afloat is the "sense" of security is use, the second device will be for social and leisure...think about it.

  • Can anyone recommend a USB CF card reader that will work in my Macbook Pro Retina? My USB card readers for CF cards do not work

    At present, the only way I can load photos from a CF card to my new Macbook Pro Retina is by loading them onto an external hard drive via an old PC that can accept either of my USB card readers, then plugging the external hard drive into my MBP. Neither the USB card reader or the cable that comes with the Canon HDSLR camera will transfer photos directly to my MBP. I find it unbelievable that I have to go to a PC to load photos because I can't do it with my new MBP.
    Has anyone found a reliable USB CF card reader, or one that connects via thunderbolt or HDMI, at any price, that will work directly with the new MBP Retina?

    This is what we need:
    Location photoshoot - we use the Canon EOS 5D  Mk II still camera & the Canon FX100 pro camcorder.
    CF cards are: SanDisk Extreme UDMA & SanDisk Extreme Pro UDMA 6 for video (I think they are both Type II) My Mac recognises them both as FAT 32 format
    My MBPRetina is on the latest version of Mountain Lion OSX 10.83
    the files from the camcorder will transfer to my MacBook Pro Retina directly via the camera's cable but it is quite slow & it means I cannot continue to film while downloading files but this we can live with.
    the files from the still camera Canon EOS 5D  Mk II will not transfer directly via the camera's cable - have yet to get the Canon software to download, but via the camera's cable will not help anyway as we need to have the still camera free to keep shooting.
    We need to be able to take out the CF card from the first part of the shoot & download the still shots while just on the Macbook's battery power, while we insert a fresh CF card back into the still camera to continue with the next part of the shoot simultaneously (while the first card is downloading.)
    The files from the first part of the shoot will be both in RAW (.CR2) & Jpeg format. We just need to quickly transfer the jpegs, then I do a quick sort, batch the best ones as black/white images, & use these in a client slideshow immediately after part 2 of the shoot.
    Obviously we need fast data transfer speeds, & rely on the MBP's battery power while on a location shoot.
    The card readers I have tried are an older specific CF card reader branded as Palm, & a USB 2 multi card reader branded as Travel Flash. With both readers, the lights on the readers flash on & off, & the MBP recognises the card & the files will even appear both in Finder & in i-Photo, so it starts importing, then aborts with an error message saying:
    'The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “” can’t be read or written.
    (Error code -36)'
    & another message saying:
    'the disk was not ejected properly'.
    So it appears the MBP does read the CF cards but the card readers don't stay connected, no matter what angle I put them on or however many times I re-connect them.
    Yes, they are probably cheap & I want to buy a decent one.
    So, in summary:
    the card reader needs to work when the MBPR is only on battery power (I read in some forums that some USB card readers aren't so reliable on the laptop's battery power)
    the card reader needs to be quite fast. I have read the USB 3 readers won't read CF cards at higher than USB 2 speeds. Is this true? Are the firewire connected ones faster, & if so, are they still reliable on the MBP's battery power?
    From research, it appears my problem is associated with my specific model of Mac & platform, being MacBook Retina on Mountain Lion OSX Version 10.83. If any of the recommended card readers have been successful with this, plese let me know.
    Thanks heaps for the suggestions so far.

  • How i upload a web page named index.html generated by NI Web UI Builder in thin client application on world wide Web

    Hello All,
                   I have an example which use simulated signal with its web service generated by LabVIEW. Then an application of this web service was created using NI web UI builder. And application was build and deployed on NI Cloud Portal, a zip file was downloaded of that project  after build and deploying application.
    The downloaded file contain a thin client application like :index.html page, readme file etc.
                  Now problems is this index.html runs easily on http://localhost:8080/appname/index.html or on my computer name like
    http://iaa42:8080/appname/index.html web page runs and shows updated values in indicators and graphs  but when i use ip address of my system like http://192.168.1.6:8080/appname/index.html , index.html runs but the values in indicator and graphs remains 0 (zero) constantly.     how can i get all indicators and graphs updating continously on by using my ip address like same when i use localhost or computer name in url bar.    1st problem is this.
    Now 2nd question.
                 I get a page index.html in a zip file built by NI web UI builder now i want this page to be viewed by every one world wide
    where should i upload that code. Should NI Cloud Portal be my hosting server for that web page ? or i have to purchase a domain other than NI cloud portal?
     Thanks in Advance
    Regards
    Waqas

    Hi Waqas,
    For your first question, my first thoughts turn to your router (which I assume you are using with a 192.168.x.x address). Are you sure you are configuring your ports and firewalls to allow NI services to function? Here is a really good resource on how to check if your ports and firewalls are configured properly:
    http://www.ni.com/white-paper/12402/en/
    For your second question, when you deploy a web service you are hosting it on your local machine. If you wanted to host it elsewhere (i.e. another server or another domain) you would have to be sure that the server hosting your application has the LabVIEW run-time engine installed.
