Career Progress
Hi,
I am a 21-year-old programmer. I must say that I used to enjoy my job but lately I do not like it so much! The reason is that I enjoy programming what comes to my mind, and at work that is not so much possible since in my country we usually work on tailored made programmers!! (Nothing to do with companies like Google :)
This week my company hired a new employee he is around early 50s and this got me more hate my work!
Am I going to still be programming at that age?
Personally when I think of my career I see myself as a programmer only for 2-to-3 years (have been already working for another 2 years now). I hope that after that time I can go up the corporate ladder and get less code to do and more analysis and design!
Lately I also started a B.Sc. course and maybe after that try to get Sun Certified (although from what I hear it seems very hard).
However I do not know what else I would need to do to actually make sure I am good for a promotion! Also I do not know if my expectations are correct!
That is at what age do you think I would be coding less and do analysis and design more? 25? 30? 40?
Also do you think that changing companies help in this? I have just changed my company and went from junior programmer to programmer (next step in this company will be senior programmer with still lots of code, and nearly 2-to-3 years away)
Anyways, thanks for sharing any comments and experience,
Antonio DiLivorno
p.s. I know this is a java forum, I program with Java every day, and this is a very good community where to discuss this in my opinion since here there is a pool of people coming from all over the world and I am sure some of the people here have come across to situations like these!
Hard question, since it is so personal that I wonder whether I should be writing that at all...
All said below is not stated in the way of general principles, it's just my personal opinion.
There are two problems mixed here, so let's separate them:
- You seem not to enjoy your job.
In this you are the only person who can do something (be it change of the company, though this rarely is the real problem). Doing things you enjoy is very good, but in most of the time you do things that other people want and need (you provide a service, after all, that's what you are paid for). You still can do your job in a way that you enjoy it.
I would not bother with the age of the other employees - as long as they do the job they were hired for they are just colleagues, why care whether they are 18 or 55 years old?
- What to do in order to go higher in the hierarchy and what are the expected time frames for this?
Again you are the person who can decide most. Learn, progress, do more than is expected whenever you have the possibility to do it. Remember that you are always learning from experience. Papers from completed courses are a good thing, as it is good to read books, articles, forums. But diplomas alone cannot help you a lot (yes, you can get hired more easily if you have a good CV, but if you have no coverage you can as well get fired). Do your best, never give up, learn while you walk, while you travel, whenever possible stick to colleagues at higher positions when they are discussing topics so you become familiar with the tasks and the level.
The rest depends on the company. You can do nothing if the boss had decided to put his man at a position, but if you are skilled, progressive, conscientious and persistent it is unlikely that you will remain unnoticed. This way even if you change the company you will still be good, wherever you go, whatever you do.
And don't read only about technical stuff. Read about management, people relations (employees and just ordinary community relations), collect some financial knowledge. Broaden your view, accept people's differences, etc.
And be consistent, always. Simply be great without thihking you are.
Mike
Wow, what a pile of BS ;)

Next certification path/career progression.
Hi,
I am software developer with 3 years of exp (plsql developer 2 yrs and j2ee 1 year), I have completed OCA-developer track(plsql). I also have little experience on DBA side.
I had posted a year back asking which track should I opt for(developer/dba) and which version(10g/11g).
Now when I am OCA, I have further few questions. I am not sure about the market value of OCP - developer track.
Would it be really valuable becoming OCP for plsql developer track?
I am out of job currently. So I am not aiming at enhancing my current work skils(as I am out of work).
But I am aiming towards the certification which would improve my resume worth equally balanced by my work experience.
So OCP-developer should be ideal for me or OCA-DBA?
As I plan to give SCWCD too , to boost my j2ee exp, so that I can apply for both plsql devloper/j2ee developer openings,
I afford to choose only one oracle exam as of now.
Also, which oracle technology/product is hot cake right now in market? What would be my ideal career progression?
PLSQL developer and OCA/OCP(3 years of exp) ---> ???
What is OBIEE? what is the starting point of that field if I wish to enter into it?
Reply and help would be sincerely appreciated.

Hi guys,
What path has to be chosen in moving forward with SAP?
I am an ABAPer with an experience of 2.5 yrs. I got opportunities to work on the SAP domains of MM, PM, PS, WM FI. For last 6 months I have been working in the IS-U (Utilities) domain.
I have heard people talking of giving importance in acquiring particular domain knowledge in SAP. As far as ABAP is concerned there is not big difference in the changing domains as the base work for ABAP remains the same across the domains. Only changes are the tables and transactions involved.
I also intend to get into the techno-functional aspect of SAP and then into the functional area. But confused in choosing the domain area. I hear people speaking of IS-U (utilities) or IS-O (oil) as the hot domain currently being worked/serviced by IT industries on SAP. Wanted to know whether IS-U and IS-oil are the latest trend thatu2019s catching up in the SAP and will this take the sheen out of the core R/3 modules of MM, PM and so on. Or is it the world that am seeing at the place I am working in and outside its different.
So confused on which domain to choose for the best.
Please advice with your expert experiences and foresights.
Regards,
StockHey
To tell you frankly any reply we will give will be based upon our experice and our preferences,i work in SAP XI so i will say come in XI,similarly some other person who works in SD will say come in SD,but i don't think that will help you.you need to look from your perspective, every field in SAP requires professional, some are more widely used and some are not.
You can gauge you skills and your interests and the based upon that decide whats most suited for you.
All the best
Thanx

This is regarding the career suggestion between ERP consulting and ERP sales or presales.
Hi Everyone,
Thanks for reading this post as this would not give any knowledge to you but would help for my career progression.
I am presently working as SAP consultant in PP module in an MNC . I always had interest towards sales or pre-sales in the field of SAP.
I do not have idea why i want to shift y career path. But probably due to Monetary concerns.
I now want to know which career path is ore better and fruitful either SAP consulting or SAP sales or Pre-sales.
I have experience of 2 yrs as SAP consultant. I hold B.tech in mechanical and MBA in operations and systems.
It would be very appreciable if some one clarifies my ambiguity in between choosing the above mentioned careers.
Thanks!
Chaitanya.Hi Krishna,
Let me answer your questions:
Interest & ability are not same. Some people might be interested but they have not done anything which actually proves the fact that the person is already established to make the call.
Are you interested in sales or consulting. If you say, you are interested in sales as they will give you more money then the next question you should ask yourself is, have you already enabled yourself to do the Pre sales or sales job.
Prerequisite to do Pre Sales/Sales job:
First: You should have good high level solutioning knowledge.
Second: You should be passionate to work on different industries.
Third: You should have already done 15/20 RFP.
Fourth: You have already worked as SME for some of the high level solutions that's given to client.
Fifth: You have already established yourself as a solution architect.
Sixth: You have more or less have good integration high level exposure.
Seventh: You are ready to travel with very short notices and always readdy with baggage.
You have mentioned that you have 2 years experience as SAP Consultant and with this much experience as consultant is probably not a very wise thought to move your career to presales.
So I would say consider the pre sales or sales option after you have at least 5 years or so and you have quite seen the functional side clearly. Though its not a very hard and first rules but it helps if you think in this way.
Let me know in case you have any other queries or need any clarifications.
Thanks & Regards

Oracle 11.5.5 v3 for MS windows
Please I need help. I decided to go into oracle financial due to career progression. I have just bought the cd pack (oracle applications 11i release 5 cd pack V3 for windows. This has been correctly installed but I could not open the SET OF BOOKS FORM IN THE GL MODULE. After I have created my chart of accounts, functional currency and calender, the DEFINE form of the set book could not open, so I cannot link the GL Set Of Books to the three Cs. When I click the SETUP->FINANCIALS->BOOKS->DEFINE, no response. Please try to help me. I do not have a support license because this a trial version for 30 days. I do not have access to metalink untill when I secure a job. Nothing is wrong with the installations. I knew people having the same problem.
Please you could reply me through [email protected]
ThanksHi Nick!
There was a bug logged on this same issue Bug No. 2163235 from a customer.
Have you tried some of the following troubleshooting techniques:
1. After you've selected the set of books form from the menu, is the Applications processing anything or just no response? Any error message at the bottom of the left hand side corner of the screen at all?
2. Have you tried to regenerate the set of books form (GLXSTBKS.fmx)?
3. Can you open up any other setup form? Like the Journal Categories (Setup->Journals->Categories) or Journal Sources form (Setup->Journals->Sources)?
4. If there are no error messages at all and you are able to open up other forms in GL, and have already set up a calendar and chart of accounts to be used for a set of books, have you recompiled all invalid objects and regenerated the GLXSTBKS form as well as all forms via adadmin?
5. If you go to the directory $GL_TOP/forms/US/, does the file GLXSTBKS.fmx exists and has the correct permission (execute and read)?
6. What if you change to a different GL responsibility, such as General Ledger SuperUser? Does the set of books form come up?
7. Can you try using the Vision Demo database with the GL Super User responsibility? The form function should be assigned to the GL Concurrent Request data group. (From System Administrator Responsibility, open the Define Responsibilities form to see what data group is assigned to the GL responsibility).

Hello All,
I have a small query for all the board members.
1. I am planning to do a SAP CRM certification course.
2. After doing a lot of research of the job market and the job trends, I would like to know which of the following would be a better bet to do a CRM certification - Services or Sales in the UK job market?
3. I would be more interested in exploring the UK job market after doing the certification, so which one would be more apt and quick in terms of getting me a job with a better profile and scope of career progression. The job sites sites that the volume of CRM services jobs are more in nos, but after other related discussions with people in CRM/SAP it has come to a common understanding that Sales is more apt in temrs of the long run benefits and career growth.
Shall be thankful if you could help me with the answers of the above mentioned queries.
Many thanks
Regards,
AmitHi Amit
Having seen your mail today .I have worked on SAP CRM project as SAP Basis Consultants . had the same discussion on project with some the colleagues.
Every one was taking the side of Sales. So sales was a good .
Hope it helps.

MBA after SAP ABAP ??
hi,
My name is kaustubh.
I have done B.E computer in 2013.
I have done SAP ABAP Certification in aug 2013.
As of now I am not getting a job as sap abap consultant. But, currently I am working as SAP ABAP Trainer in a institute with 3.5 p.a package.
I am planning to do MBA distance learning from symbiosis.
Should i continue this job or should i try for companies??
and
Can anyone tell me which field of MBA i should go for??
1.International Business
2.System
3.Marketing
4. HR ????
Help me out.
Abapers dont get job easily(freshers). I got job as a SAP ABAP Trainer( authorised education partner). They have on-site license of SAP.
I am too much confused help me about field of MBA and give your opinion about my job.
I really need expert's help.
Thank you.Kaustubh,
Don't get me wrong, but clearly you lack a sense of direction with regards to your career progression. You have initially chosen SAP ABAP as a career option (presumably because you thought you were good at programming). You intended to work in a consulting environment but ended up being a trainer. Now, that's understandable because the scope for a "fresher" in SAP is very limited and after a while you just take what you get. By being close to technology you can always keep an eye out for consulting opportunities in the corporate world. So far so good.
But I don't understand your need to get an MBA degree. How is it going to enhance your career? And more importantly why would any company hire an ABAP consultant with an MBA degree? How exactly are you selling yourself? What's your USP?
In today's cut-throat competitive world, corporates need people with niche skills or expert-level skills. Gone are the days when Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none are fancy!
You need to concentrate on one line for your career progression. If it is technical stuff that you are good at, either you stick to being a trainer and simultaneously keep an eye for opportunities or you quit your current job (if you can afford to) and go full-throttle. But if you are bored of the technical work and you feel you can excel in Management, then preferably get into one of the IIMs (distance education will do you no good) and give it your best.
Whatever you do, don't be the cat on the wall!

From a CRM training course to do SAP BI life time projects
Hi, My name is Connie. I am currently doing Master's degree in Business Information Systems. I am working as a Software Tester. I did SAP CRM training as well but have no work experience on CRM. I recently got an opportunity to be exposed to real life projects on SAP but unfortunately it is not CRM that I did training for. I am required to do SAP BI. The question that I need advise on is that, is this a right switch? Can I take this opportunity and later divert to CRM? or must I wait for CRM projects that I don't know when will they come? Is BI a good module to go for, for a person of my background?
Your advice's will be highly appreciated. Thank you
ConnieHi Connie,
You can answer your own question (to a great extent) by checking how desperate you are about getting a break in the SAP world.
- If you comfortable(monetarily and mentally) and patient then you can continue to look of a CRM-related job. The future here is bright.
- If you something real quick and you have sufficient training provided in SAP BI/BW and you think you can handle it, then you can go ahead with BI. There's really good scope in BI. Since IT industry is all about expanding your horizon in the software world, you will eventually gather skills in SAP BO, HANA, Big Data etc. That is a good career progression in SAP.
Both have good career prospects. I suggest you read about SAP BI (if you have not already done) and see if that interests you.

Is Workflow a Must-know for ABAP Programmers
Hi guys, do I have to learn workflow to make myself (ABAP programmer) competitive in the job market? How about other skills such as Smartforms and iDocs?
Please kindly give me some comments. Thanks! Here's a rough roadmap of life as an ABAP programmer.
The field of SAP Netweaver programming covers a deep and wide area. You can choose to specialize in one of several different ways. The first way is to go very deep. Select a subspecialty and learn it backwards and forwards, for example, conversions. Conversions are boring but are a very necessary part of EVERY implementation. You will ALWAYS find work in conversions. There is a lot of things that you will learn as you deepen your experience with conversions that will make you more and more valuable as your career progresses. Working with conversions entails a tremendous amount of basic csv file manipulation. There are times when you'll work on the legacy system as well so if you like playing with a wide variety of (mostly archaic) programming environments, conversions can be fun.
Conversions are just one example, though. Other areas that are traditional "deep" specialization targets: EDI, workflow, interfaces (although that blends with EDI and PI these days), dialog programming (user exits/BADIs), report writing with an emphasis these days on Adobe Forms, etc. (The traditional acronym WRICEF -- workflow, reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms should help you remember.)
Second, you could could choose to go "wide", the infamous technofunctional route. This means that you put in the extra effort to learn one of the functional areas, for example Human Resources. This gives you an advantage over other ABAPers trying to do WRICEF in "your" area. There are many intricacies in, for example, HR reporting that a generic abaper is going to trip across if it's his/her first time coding in the HR module. The danger here is that you will sometimes get pulled to do configuration for your functional area and if you really prefer coding to configuration, that can be a drag. (As a side note, deep HR abapers are worth their weight in gold, due to the intricacies of cluster tables. Go deep enough in your functional area and you'll surely carve a lucrative niche for yourself.)
You could choose to supplement your career with non-ABAP coding, such as in java or XML. There are fewer folks who practice in these areas so currently you can get a premium for these supplemental skillsets, but that changes over time.
While we're on that topic, if you are really trying to ask what skillsets are going to be hot in a few years, don't bother. No one has a crystal ball. Fads come and go. For a while everyone predicted the end of the ABAPer in favor of java programming and XML, but SAP has started to turn away from JAVA and XML so, while java and XML coding will continue to be valuable skillsets, they may be less in demand over time.
Lastly, (although, truely I am just scratching the surface) you could go into Project Management. Managing software development is not a skill that every programmer can do well. You have to deal with managing both people and code and change and unrealistic demands and budgets and... and.... and... etc. SAP software project management can be high stress, but it can also be very rewarding if those types of activities get you excited.
In the end, it comes back to doing what you like to do. You're still at the early stages of your career. Try everything. Go back to the things you enjoy the most and at which you excel. The career part will take care of itself.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,

OCP : Any hard-copy-proof of passing single exams(1Z0-001) & not entire OCP
I am a Java/J2EE developer and want to add
general RDBMS & SQL skills to my skill-set.
So want to appear for the test
1Z0-001 Intro to Oracle: SQL and PL/SQL
Due to some career reasons
I am planning to take only 1Z0-001 test for the present.
I understand,I would be getting the certification as
"Oracle PL/SQL and Oracle Forms Developer"
only after I complete the other exams in the series.
But I plan to give the rest of the tests later based
on time and financial conditons.
In the meanwhile, if I pass the
1Z0-001 exam, I would like to show it as a part
of my skill-set in my future career progression including future
job interviews.
Can someone please tell me, if I pass the
1Z0-001 exam, WHETHER I WOULD BE GETTING ANY
HARD-COPY / (Printable-Soft-Copy) PROOF OF HAVING
CLEARED the 1Z0-001 exam which I can use for my future
career progression.
Thanks in advance....Yes you will get a printout from any test centre, will a seal of its autheticity. I had done my exams at a Prometric Testing Centre, and got the same.Did the tests sometime back in 2002 for OCP's.

MBP 13 or 15 first timer....multiple VM's
Hello-
I am planning to purchase a MBP (first one!) and am looking forward to it. I wanted to get some experience on what model will server my purposes.
I plan on running VM fusion with Win 7 (mainly for school stuff), multiple Linux distros, backtrack and other VM's
I am not a developer but am a systems admin with aspirations of learning more linux pen testing applications. I am currently building an RPM as well. In the future as my career progresses I assume I will be doing more comprehensive and power consuming tasks.
In any event I will certainly upgrade to 8gb RAM.
thanksThere's really no comparison. The 15" is a better performing machine. The higher GHz on the 13" is misleading. The 4 real cores on the 15" will give you much better performance... especially with multiple virtual machines. You're also getting a significantly more powerful GPU with the 15" (a dedicated one which is not offered in the 13" machine). Jumping up to the next higher 15" model gives you a bit more graphics horsepower, but you can probably make due with the base. If you're conservative with your VM RAM settings, you can probably get decent performance running two light-resources operating systems (like XP) with a 4GB machine. RAM is relatively inexpensive and easy to replace. You can certainly purchase the system with 4GB and then upgrade to 8 when you have the $$ and/if you feel you need the performance boost.
Having said that...the 15" is a bit heftier... but in terms of performance, there's really no comparison. The extra real estate on the larger 15" display is also nice to have. -
When listening to music with any pair of headphones or earphones plugged in, all of a sudden the volume will get really low for no reason. Example: say the volume is at 15. All of a sudden the volume will drop to like a 4, but the volume slider is still positioned at 15. To fix it, I have to open the music app or control panel, and slide the song progress bar around and then the volume returns to normal.
This is not an issue with the headphones. I tried twisting and jiggling the jack and there were no changes. Not even static. The issue happens with the aux cable in my car as well. It's also not an issue with the songs. These are the same songs I was playing yesterday and they are all perfectly fine.
Right now this is happening on my iPhone 5s with the most recent iOS8 update. I've also had the update for awhile and this has only started less than a day ago.It sounds like dirt in the headphone jack. I would use a vacuum cleaner to "suck" out any dirt that might be in there. You might also want to look carefully and see if anything in lodged in there.

Oracle 12c installation on Windows 7 not progressing
My Oracle 12c Release 1 installation on my Windows 7 Professional 64 bit laptop seems to be stuck or hung or whatever you call it. After downloading file1 and file2 from OTN using wget, I copied the files to c:\oracle12c directory, renamed them so that they are zip files winx64_12c_database_1of2.zip and winx64_12c_database_2of2.zip that Windows can recognize, without the authparams used by wget. I unzipped both, extracting all files, and they are now in the c:\oracle12c\database directory. I double clicked on c:\oracle12c\database\setup.exe and the installer started. My computer overheated and shut down abnormally. I restarted my computer. Then started over with clicking on setup.exe, using dbhome_2, instead of dbhome_1 that was used in the aborted installation. My computer met and passed all of the prerequisites. I followed all of the steps carefully. It finished the Oracle database installation, finished with the Net Configuration Assistant, then started the Oracle Database Configuration Assistant. The task bar has been stuck at 86% for a few hours now. Clicking on details shows:

Recovery in progress may need access to files error
Dear all,
I was shown the below error when trying to drop a tablespace TBS1.
DROP TABLESPACE TBS1 INCLUDING CONTENTS;
DROP TABLESPACE TBS1 INCLUDING CONTENTS
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01156: recovery in progress may need access to files
i donot have any backups for the database, and the database was running in NOARCHIVELOG mode for the past one year.
The datafile associated to this tablespace is offline (actually the original datafile which occupied 33GB of space on the machine UNNECESSARILY was dropped, and this datafile /u01/app/oracle/.../datafile/MASTER_TBS1.dbf is created and associated with TBS1).
When I try to bring it online, the following error message is being shown..
ALTER TABLESPACE TBS1 ONLINE
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-01113: file 8 needs media recovery
ORA-01110: data file 8:
'/u01/app/oracle/.../datafile/MASTER_TBS1.dbf'
Now I need a tablespace with name TBS1 to import objects from some other database. (All those objects were defaulted to tablespace"TBS1" on that database.)
Please help me find a solution.
Thanks,
Aswin.You could do an
ALTER DATABASE DATAFILE <fileid or filename> OFFLINE DROP ;
for each of the datafiles in that tablespace before you attempt to drop the tablespace.
Of course, be very careeful with what fileid/filename you specify -- you wouldn't want to drop datafiles of some other tablespace -- you wouldn't be able to recover them or bring them back online ! -
Quiz progress not displaying as desired
Hi Guys,
I've posted around this issue previously - noting that all questions in a project are considered part of the quiz. Here is the issue - I have a project with several topics in a single captivate file. Each topic contains a few 'practice' questions. The problem occurs when I get to the final assessment - captivate considers previous practice questions as part of the quiz - so any score applied to these questions are counted as part of the final assessment score. I fixed this issue by setting the score to zero for each of these practice questions.
My bigger issue now is the client wants to show progress through the quiz - i.e Show Something like 'Question 1 of 10' throughout the quiz. When I set show quiz progress captivate then cleaverly counts each of the questions (inc the p;ractice questions which are not scored) in the project and then on the first Assessment slide shows progress as 'Question 12 of 22'. (12 including the first 11 practice questions and the first assessment question.)
How do I reset this counter so I can show progress in my assessment starting from Question 1 and not 12??? Any ideas/suggestions would be much appreciated.Hello,
That is OK, and would have been my workaround too (using a dedicated master slide with Text Caption). To initialize the variables would be better(?) by using an advanced action when the Question slides start (on entering the first Question slide), at least if you want to have the correct progress indicator on retaking the Quiz. Perhaps it is my misunderstanding, but from your explanation I conclude that you initialized the user variable when creating it? One of my recommendations when playing with advanced actions + user variables is to be careful about initializing, taking into account all possible situations. Sorry if this really superfluous to you. But you also mentioned that this was the first time you were using advanced actions and variables in Captivate.
Personally I have been writing articles and blogging about advanced actions in Captivate 5 since several months. Here is the link to one of the blog posts that could perhaps give you some inspiration:
