Is Workflow a Must-know for ABAP Programmers

Hi guys, do I have to learn workflow to make myself (ABAP programmer) competitive in the job market? How about other skills such as Smartforms and iDocs?
Please kindly give me some comments. Thanks!

Here's a rough roadmap of life as an ABAP programmer.
The field of SAP Netweaver programming covers a deep and wide area. You can choose to specialize in one of several different ways. The first way is to go very deep. Select a subspecialty and learn it backwards and forwards, for example, conversions. Conversions are boring but are a very necessary part of EVERY implementation. You will ALWAYS find work in conversions. There is a lot of things that you will learn as you deepen your experience with conversions that will make you more and more valuable as your career progresses. Working with conversions entails a tremendous amount of basic csv file manipulation. There are times when you'll work on the legacy system as well so if you like playing with a wide variety of (mostly archaic) programming environments, conversions can be fun.
Conversions are just one example, though. Other areas that are traditional "deep" specialization targets: EDI, workflow, interfaces (although that blends with EDI and PI these days), dialog programming (user exits/BADIs), report writing with an emphasis these days on Adobe Forms, etc. (The traditional acronym WRICEF -- workflow, reports, interfaces, conversions, enhancements, forms should help you remember.)
Second, you could could choose to go "wide", the infamous technofunctional route. This means that you put in the extra effort to learn one of the functional areas, for example Human Resources. This gives you an advantage over other ABAPers trying to do WRICEF in "your" area. There are many intricacies in, for example, HR reporting that a generic abaper is going to trip across if it's his/her first time coding in the HR module. The danger here is that you will sometimes get pulled to do configuration for your functional area and if you really prefer coding to configuration, that can be a drag. (As a side note, deep HR abapers are worth their weight in gold, due to the intricacies of cluster tables. Go deep enough in your functional area and you'll surely carve a lucrative niche for yourself.)
You could choose to supplement your career with non-ABAP coding, such as in java or XML. There are fewer folks who practice in these areas so currently you can get a premium for these supplemental skillsets, but that changes over time.
While we're on that topic, if you are really trying to ask what skillsets are going to be hot in a few years, don't bother. No one has a crystal ball. Fads come and go. For a while everyone predicted the end of the ABAPer in favor of java programming and XML, but SAP has started to turn away from JAVA and XML so, while java and XML coding will continue to be valuable skillsets, they may be less in demand over time.
Lastly, (although, truely I am just scratching the surface) you could go into Project Management. Managing software development is not a skill that every programmer can do well. You have to deal with managing both people and code and change and unrealistic demands and budgets and... and.... and... etc. SAP software project management can be high stress, but it can also be very rewarding if those types of activities get you excited.
In the end, it comes back to doing what you like to do. You're still at the early stages of your career. Try everything. Go back to the things you enjoy the most and at which you excel. The career part will take care of itself.
Hope this helps!
Best regards,

    Hi Friends..
I have a plan to take NXP JCOP Training..
But, in the NXP JCOP Training's requirements states that the person must understand about Global Platform..
I want to know what kind of GP's stuffs that i must know for prepare for NXP JCOP Training?
    Perhaps from Global Platform basics..
Actually, i have download the Global Platform 2.2.1 specification..
but, honestly i must say that i don't too understand about it, because i thought that it contains a lot of term that i don't too understood.. :(
Please anybody could help me how the way for understanding the Global Platform 2.2.1 specification..
sorry, perhaps this question is a little bit silly..
Actually, i have 10 days left for prepare for NXP JCOP Training in Singapore
    Thanks in advance..

I participated in a JCOP training 2 years ago. It was then a two day training, where the first day was an introduction into GlobalPlatform and Java Card. If one took only the second day, the pre-requisite was to know about GlobalPlatform. So if you take the full training, I think NXP should introduce you to GlobalPlatform to make you understand the concepts and what it can be used for.

  • Webdynpro for ABAP  and Workflow

    Hi All,
I have few applications developed in WebDynpro for ABAP. Now I have the following  requirement in one of my application. I am creating some new entries in the custom table based on the user inputs and actions. Before creating a new entry some one needs to approve that. Once the approval is done I have to  create a new entry.
I came to know that this can be achieved using workflow. I have no much idea on workflow. Could someone suggest me how I can achieve that please?
    Thank You,
    Suresh.

    Hello,
Use transaction : SWFVISU  and maintain the task and the corresponding webdynpro application (parameters if any).
Register UWL with workitem handler and configure UWL.For details,
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/45/a7863f445f4617e10000000a114084/frameset.htm
Each task is a activity in simple terms. For details, please refer help.sap.com inorder to create a workflow.
    Hope this helps.

  • Integrating Web Dynpro for ABAP into ABAP Workflow

We have a requirement to create a User Interface via Web Dynpro for ABAP, and use that information to start off a workflow, transferring the data from the Web Dynpro application into the container of the Workflow.
Also later in the workflow, we would like an approval step to invoke a Web Dynpro that displayes the data, and an approve/reject button to be pressed that feeds that data back to the Workflow.
Has anybody done this, or does anybody know how to do this? We do not have the possibilities to use CAF in this project yet.
    Kind Regards,
    Tony.

    Hi,
This is of course possible. Starting the workflow with Web Dynpro or from classic ABAP dynpro doesn't really differ. Just build your web dynpro as you would build a transaction, and from the submitting/execution phase, you just launch the workflow. Launching the workflow can be done with couple of different techniques (=function modules) and it has been discussed many times here.
Also the approval part shouldn't cause any problems. Just build an application which takes as a parameter for example the work item ID (or any other relevant parameter that you can imagine, which you can use to retrieve the needed data that you want to display). Then from the web dynpro application you can call for example a function module, which can complete the work item. Or another option is that you will raise an event (again with a function module), which your approval task is waiting for.
Once again, it isn't really that different from classic dynpro (or any other technique) - the same approaches can be utilized.

    • Integration WebDynpro for ABAP and Business-Workflow
Link, documents and books are welcome!
    Thanks
    mishak

If you have worked on workflows earlier the procedure is very simple. You just need to enter certain parameter values of your application in SWFVISU for the respective task and re-register your system in UWL administration. Thats it! your webdynpro and workflows are integrated. For details on the parameters check the following link,
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/19/bff5c18ba44da4a4ca68cf572dabda/frameset.htm
There are also a couple of blogs on "launching webdynpro from UWL" (Procedure for both Java and webdynpro is almost similar). You can also check these for more details.

The friend who sold it to you needed to clear his Apple ID off the phone before he sold it to you. Of course if it wasn't his phone in the first place then he could not do so. He is your friend but you don't know where he is?
There is nothing that will help you short of getting the password for the Apple ID from your friend. If you cannot obtain that there is no workaround.

  • How to configure Webdynpro for ABAP Launch for Travel Request workflow UWL

    Hello,
We are on SAP ECC 6 EHP4, SAP Netweaver 7.01 SP5, for portal BP1.41. When we are running travel request in this new Webdynpro for ABAP in UWL it will lead from an attachment to PR05 trx. I would think that it would gve another screen where the manager can check a travel request. Is the standard SAP solution leading to this trx. PR05? We have tried to customize the task 20000189 in SWFVISU but it doesn't give us any results.
I would appreciate if you can give me an advice whether SAP standard solution will lead to PR05 or is there any other options what we haven't discovered yet. Otherwise we have to start customize it.

    Hi James,
If you like to use SAP web dispatcher as a solution for load balancing portal application, you no need to create system object under systems..
You have to install web dispatcher as separate instance where you need to configure portal apps into it..
Configure web dispatcher like to hit the admin port, use http://<webdisp-server>:<adminport>/sap/admin
For normal portal access, use http://<friendly URL>/irj/portal
The good news is that the webdispatcher knows that the portal supports SSL
Another advantage of this config, is the webdisp, will just replace the apache redirect server. Users will access mycompany.com, without any port number, since we are redirecting 80 to the backend j2ee. Also, https should work like in the normal world.
    Profile will be like below...
    SAPSYSTEMNAME = WEB
    SAPSYSTEM = 00
    INSTANCE_NAME = W00
    DIR_CT_RUN = $(DIR_EXE_ROOT)/run
    DIR_EXECUTABLE = $(DIR_CT_RUN)
    Accesssability of Message Server
    Message Server Parameters ##########
NOTE: The "ms/http_port" must match the profile on the Central Instance
    rdisp/mshost = <FQDN of portal CI Host>
    ms/http_port = <Ms port of portal>
    SAP Web Dispatcher Ports
    #icm/server_port_0 = PROT=HTTP,PORT=81$$
    icm/server_port_0 = PROT=HTTP,PORT=80, TIMEOUT=3600, EXTBIND=1 (some OS will not allow to bind ports <1024)
    Admin port details
    icm/server_port_1 = PROT=HTTP,PORT=3200
    #, EXTBIND=1
    icm/HTTP/admin_0 =
    PREFIX=/sap/admin,DOCROOT=./admin,PORT=3200,AUTHFILE=/usr/sap/WEB/SYS/global/security/data/icmauth.txt

    icm/HTTP/redirect_0 = PREFIX=/ , TO=http://<friendly URL name>/irj/portal

  • How to create a long text in webdynpro for abap?

    Hi Experts,
I am new to Web Dynpro for ABAP, I have a requirement for Grievance workflow. For this we have developed a Webdynpro application which appears in portal. Here my issue is user wants to enter a long text on the screen and I have to save this text as standard text. Is it possible to create a text box which we can insert number of lines?
If so can anybody please suggest me how to resolve this issue.
    Thank You.
    Ranganadh.

    hi ,
u can use the TEXT EDIT UI element , procced like this :
1 Right click on Root Element UI container , insert elemnt TEXT EDIT
2 create a context attribute of type string or string_table
3 bind value property of ur UI to this attribute
4 u can get the values entered in the text UI by user , by get_attribute method
press CNTRL + F7  , select the radio button read context node/attribute , select the corresponding attribute
The attribute to be bound can be of type STRING or STRING_TABLE. With STRING_TABLE rows from TextEdit are stored as table rows. A line break is always stored as a line feed in a STRING (CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES=>NEWLINE, ASCII decimal 10). The Web Dynpro framework carries out the conversion for the client platform.
Note that a string to be displayed in TextEdit, must only use a line feed as a line break.

  • System copy for ABAP+JAVA system using SAPINST method

    Dear support,
We have recently upgraded to ECC 6.0 system and we have been still doing system copy by using backup and restore method. I know its<b> wrong</b>.
which involves below steps , this old methos works fine for ABAP engine and evreything looks ok.But java engine will not work.
So we need to use SAPINST method as described in note 785848 and system copy guide available on OSS. But i am really not able to understand sequence
for tasks to be carried out in this SAPINST method.
<b>Can anybody list few sequence along with step by step procedure as i mentioned below for old system copy procedure.</b>
Is it really difficult to make that for <b>SAPINST</b>  as everybody says refer to standard guide and note ?
Anybody if possible can make the same way as i did below , i think it would rather be small as far as my understanding after reading those docs.
Simple old system copy procedure works for ABAP is as:
Run the following command on source system.
    a. Login as <sid>adm
    b. svrmgrl
    c. connect internal
    d. alter database backup controlfile to trace;
    e. exit;
    f. Above command will generate a .trc file in /oracle/P01/saptrance/usertrace directory.
    g. Copy the text from CREATE CONTROLFILE until the ( and paste it in to any new .sql or controlfile.sql file.
    h. Copy the controlfile.sql to target system.
    i. Edit the file and replace the entire source SID to target SID.
    j. Edit the reuse database command with the set database command
Copy the aft generated during the backup file from the source system to target system. (/oracle/<SID>/sapbackup)
    a. Change all the source <SID> to target <SID>.
    b. Only don't change the backup volume name it must be target system <SID>.
    c. Copy the above aft file name line from the source back<SID>.log to target<SID>.log file.
    5. Shutdown the target server instance.
    6. From this onwards all the command on the target system only.
    a. Login as <SID>adm
    b. run the SAPDBA
    c. select J (Restore/Recovery)
    d. select B (Full restore and recovery)
    e. select A (Select backup of type)
    f. Select the offline backup which you want to restore.
    g. It will take some time to restore.
    h. Once the database is restored login as <SID>adm and run the
    i. svrmgrl
    j. connect internal;
    k. startup nomount (if the database is already mounted shutdown it using the shutdown command)
    l. run the following command
    m. @controlfile.sql (file name of the control file contains the CREATE CONTROLFILE statement)
    n. After the run the above command it should give the "Statement Processed)
    o. alter database open resetlogs.
I am really looking forward to see anybody take some time out to prepare this kind of step by step procedure.
It would be of greate help for all of us for performing system copy with sapinst method.
    Looking forward for your support.
    Best Regards,
    AjitR

    Hi,
As per the guide you need to do source system Technical Preparations, in that running the export preparation is also one. You need to run this first before you start the export, if and only if export will successful if preparation is successful.
Yes you need to create the export directory to take the export copy of source system, it may be any where in your server. It should be having 6 to 8 GB free space. No need to create the export directory in target system, after export is completed in the source system you copy the export directory to the target system.
    <b>Target system</b>
Yes you need to take the back up file system and delete all the contents of the directory.
Yes it can be considered as fresh system installation but copy of source system.
Yes the process follows after you giving the export directory path .
Next screen you will get the database drop and recreate screen chouse the drop and recreate method
Next J2EE user name and password
    Next DDIC password
Next you have to give kernel and oracle client dvd path
Next Parameter checking screen here if you are selected database drop and recreate you have to revise the oracle database system option
If you are selecting review next screen is database advance option you have to select the advanced option
Next you have to select following option to recreate
    1 Sapdata directory mapping
    2 Database instance file system
    3 Create database parameter
    4 Create tablespace
    Next screen sapdata directory creating
Next screen you can just click next no need to change any setting
    Next table creation
Next screen specify oracle instance directories
Next again parameter checking and last this is last screen
Next will be the execution screen
    Reward points if usefull

  • External web service call from WebDynpro for ABAP

    Hi...
I'm inspecting Web Dynpro For ABAP, and trying to call external web services.
    I'm created Web Service, CAF-AS.
I create the proxy class(se80) and Logical Port(lpconfig), and I take the web service in componentcontoroller of my web dynpro using Web Dynpro Wiserd.
Though I expected the context to be registered by the same type as the service interface,
they are created strange structure as follow.
    <Context>
    CONTEXT
    ---FIND_BY_PARAMS
    IMPORTING
    INPUT
    CONTROLLER
    ORDER_TEXT_BY_PARAMS_REQ
    ---EXPORTING
    OUTPUT
    CONTROLLER
    ORDER_TEXT_BY_PARAMS_RES
The CONTOROLLER is defined by the type PRXCTRLTAB, and
ORDER_TEXT_BY_PARAMS_* has deep structure, as follow.
    ORDER_TEXT_BY_PARAMS_REQ
    ---CONTROLLER    type:PRXCTRLTAB(structure)
    ---QUERY_TABLE  type:ZTABLE_NAME
    ---QUERY_FIELD   type:ZFIELD_NAME
    ---QUERY_OPTIONS  type:ZORDER_TEXT_QUERY_OPTION_TAB
I want to use only service paralmeters,  that is named query_*.
I tried to excute the webService but dump  "OBJECTS_OBJREF_NOT_ASSIGNED" occurs.
I think I must set any value to CONTOROLLER,?but I have no idea What & How I should set value.
please let me know, what is the CONTOROLLER, and how to call external web services.
    Regards,
    Naoya Tsugo,

    I solved problem by myself.
There was carelessmiss in activation of LP.
    Now, I'm closing the topic.

  • How to create Transaction code for ABAP and execution by other user

    Hi All,
Could someone please let me know how to create transaction code in detail for ABAP program. Step by step procedure expected. I would like to know how other user can execute the report using same transaction code which I have created.
    More about authorization.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello,
You can create transaction code from se80 as well.In object navigator, right click on your program name and create->transaction code. You can create transaction and select if it is only a report,a report with selection-screen depending on your requirement. You can run your report directly by entering the transaction code in the command field.
You can authorise the users who can use your transaction:
<b>Authorisation objects</b> are used to restrict certain transactions to users.Critical data must be protected from unauthorised users. For example, the head has access to certain data. But it cannot be accessed by his subordinate. For this we need to define <b>roles</b>.
•Create an authorization object with transaction SU21.
An object usually consists of the ACTVT (activity) field and one other field, which specifies the data type to be protected.By ACTVT, we can decide if the data is accessible for change, display only etc.
•Add authorization fields to the authorization object created.
•Assign the authorization object to the transaction using SE93.
Attach the authorization object to the role using transaction PFCG.
If you want <b>to assign roles</b>,use transaction PFCG.Create a new role.In the AUTHORIZATIONS tab,you can get a self generated profile name and a profile text by clicking on the icon next to it.Then go to the "Change Authorization data" and choose an authorization template. Then you can choose to display/change/create an activity and after the selection, click on the red and white circle. The profile will now be created.
In the user tab,you can give the user details who can use this role.

Go to wwww.google.com ( search flow of SD in SAP ) flow of HR in SAP ) flow of abc module in SAP .
Don’t mind , but it always good to search your self again first . I mean finding in google.com , and SDN .. Most of the time you’ll definitely get answer .
Peoples asked about functional knowledge , because if you know the flows you can understand the business process and write good program and also give input . You can also see different angles of 1 view. I must say its not obligatory for ABAP`er but it always a Plus point
    Thanks and Good luck !!
