Case Sensitivity of MySql Table Names

I am using a MySql 5 db successfully transferred from MsSql
with the MySql migration kit. It works just fine with my CF 8
application, except for having to match the case of table names in
all <cfquery> tags. My online host runs Linux for MySql.
I have installed MySql on my local Windows development
machine but notice that it has no such table name case sensitivity
-- a problem since that means I cannot test locally.
I have tried putting lower_case_table_names=0 in the MySql
my.ini file but it has not effect.
Any suggestions as to how to set up windows/CF 8? Is this
something that the built in CF server can be modified to do?
Thanks.

regarding the lower_case_table_names setting, here's a quote
from
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/identifier-case-sensitivity.html
" If you are using MySQL on only one platform, you don't
normally have
to change the lower_case_table_names variable. However, you
may
encounter difficulties if you want to transfer tables
between platforms
that differ in filesystem case sensitivity. For example, on
Unix, you
can have two different tables named my_table and MY_TABLE,
but on
Windows these two names are considered identical. To avoid
data transfer
problems stemming from lettercase of database or table
names, you have
two options:
* Use lower_case_table_names=1 on all systems. The main
disadvantage with this is that when you use SHOW TABLES or
SHOW
DATABASES, you don't see the names in their original
lettercase.]
* Use lower_case_table_names=0 on Unix and
lower_case_table_names=2
on Windows. This preserves the lettercase of database and
table names.
The disadvantage of this is that you must ensure that your
statements
always refer to your database and table names with the
correct
lettercase on Windows. If you transfer your statements to
Unix, where
lettercase is significant, they do not work if the
lettercase is incorrect.
Exception: If you are using InnoDB tables and you are trying
to
avoid these data transfer problems, you should set
lower_case_table_names to 1 on all platforms to force names
to be
converted to lowercase.
Note that if you plan to set the lower_case_table_names
system variable
to 1 on Unix, you must first convert your old database and
table names
to lowercase before restarting mysqld with the new variable
setting. "

  • RegEX for a valid mysql table name

    Hi all,
    i'm trying to figure out a regular expression for a mysql table so i can check if the string is a valid mysql table name.
    I don't know exactly the valid characters for a mysql table name.
    does any one have an Idea ?
    thnx

    You win the deal i don't know the characters :)
    Now come on. You know what DB you're using. Just google for some dox. Can't be that difficult.
    So what is the exception raised by mysql engine if
    not a valid name ?Depends on your DB and/or the JDBC implementation.
    >
    how can i catch it to prompt the user with a proper
    error message?I suppose by catching any exception risen when calling executeQuery() or the like and outputting its message.

  • MySQL Table name truncated at 21 chars in CR XI

    Post Author: MongoNV
    CA Forum: Data Connectivity and SQL
    I am trying to use CR XI and CR Server XI against a MySQL 5 database with the MySQL 3.51 ODBC driver (latest stable version) and when I pull a list of tables any table name that is over 21 chars is truncated to 21 chars.  I am able to use CR 8.5 with no problems and MS Access sees the names fine, so the ODBC driver is working correctly.  But in CR XI, it is truncating the names which makes the report not be able to connect to the data table.  I tried creating the report in CR 8.5 and then running on the CR Server or XI developer and it still had the problem using the 8.5 report.The table names cannot be changed as they are in a third party application and I cannot change them. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Thanks,Ed

    Hello,

    I am stuck. I have attached the code I have so far. How do I apply

    Well, I told you it was untested. ;-) It was missing a
    semicolon at the
    end of the line preceding the inner foreach. I had also
    neglected to print
    the opening <table> tag. This one is tested and works:
    $result=mysql_query("SHOW TABLES FROM sand2 LIKE '%$find%'")
    or die(mysql_error());
    if(mysql_num_rows($result)>0){
    while($table=mysql_fetch_row($result)){
    print "<p style=\>Table: $table[0]</p>\n";
    $r=mysql_query("SELECT * FROM `$table[0]`");
    print "<table>\n";
    while($row=mysql_fetch_row($r)){
    print "<tr>";
    foreach($row as $field){
    print "<td>$field</td>";
    print "</tr>\n";
    print "</table>\n";
    }else{
    print "None found";

  • Case sensitive column name problem

    I have a strange problem in my application.
    I install the application on several machines with no problem but in one machine I'm getting an exceptions on:
    "Column 'SomeColumnName' does not belong to table"
    the code look like this:
    DataRow newDataRow = myTableFromDatabase.NewRow();
    newDataRow["SomeColumnName"] = dr["SomeColumnName"];
    when I change the code to upper case:
    DataRow newDataRow = myTableFromDatabase.NewRow();
    newDataRow["SOMECOLUMNNAME"] = dr["SOMECOLUMNNAME"];
    it works on the problematic machine.
    - I got the same problem on reading data from OracleDataReader.
    - The property DataTable.CaseSensitive was not changed (default = false).
    I'm not sure this is ODP problem or .net but I can't find any .net issues on that.

    Ok ,
    This is the most bizar bug that I ever saw:
    The problem was that the machine was running in turkey.
    In .NET culture settings the function ToUpper is not work on the letter 'i' when the region is turkey.
    That means that oracle ODP OracleDataReader is case sensitive on the column name - if the column name have the letter 'i'.

  • In ALV Report Filter selection should be case sensitive

    Dear All,
    since one field is case sensitive in database table , i have to fetch that in alv report , but when i am applying  filter on that field its is simply fetching data with case description.  if its in caps it should fetch caps data but in   smaal case report showing no data
    Regards,

    Hi,
    All text datas are case sensitive.
    To make it work perfectly You have to Use the Keyword translate to Upper Case than display
    Now filter can work.
    Without Transalation to Upper Case filter will not work.

  • BUG - FTP with case sensitive server

    My provider uses case sensitive file and directory names. I
    created a directory 'OtherStuff' on the server directly (not from
    remote view). In Dreamweaver's FTP setup I erred by specifying the
    subdirectory of 'otherstuff'. When I created a default html file
    and PUT it, FTP failed to find the directory but continued and put
    the default html file in the root, overwriting my default web file.
    Yes, I erred. However, it would be good if Dreamweaver would
    stop when it encounters a cd failure.

    You can enable case sensitive link checking in the site
    manager.
    However, this is more the issue of the OS, rather then DW.
    Windows -
    which is the OS you use, I assume - is about the only OS
    (that I know
    of) which is case insensitive!
    All Linux/Unix based servers are case sensitive.

  • How to convert case-sensitive to extended journal format

    I have two apple computers (extended journal format) that have been backed up via a time capsule. I have just noticed that the TC is formatted as case-sensitive. I do not know why case-sensitive. In an effort to ensure consistency of file format then I seek to somehow remove case-sensitive formatting. I presume no/minimal underlying case-sensitivity issues within file names as source data is not formatted in case-sensitive manner.
    I have tried SuperDuper to clone the TC to an external HDD but the application cloned the formatting in addition to the data.
    I have attempted use of Disk Utility to copy content from source (TC) to destination (HDD) but this yielded error messages that noted different file format types.
    It there a way to convert/remove case sensitive formatting from TC?
    I appreciate that I could simply reformat TC to extended journal format but this would presumably erase all my backup data.
    Any guidance most welcomed.

    RossM wrote:
    So I guess my choice is to "leave well alone" as Pondini suggests and accept the fact that cloning TC onto HDD has now formatted my new HDD as case-sensititive.
    Actually, you may have two choices, depending on how you're going to be backing-up to the new HD:
    Your best bet, by far, is to back up to it directly, rather than connecting it to the TC.  That's much faster and more reliable.  If so:
    * Leave the TC backups alone.  Reformat the HD as case-ignorant and let Time Machine start fresh on it.  You can always see and restore from the old ones via the Browse... option, per Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #17.
    * Format the HD as case-sensitive and copy the backups from the TC to it. But don't copy the whole sparse bundle; copy the Backups.backupdb folder from the sparse bundle to the top level of the HD.  (Sparse bundles are used only for network backups.)  See #18 in the FAQ; you'll need the 4th procedure (copy network backups to be used locally.
    But if you're going to connect the HD to the TC and back up to it that way, it doesn't matter how you format the HD, since the backups must be in a sparse bundle, that has its own format.  Two choices for that:
    * Leave the TC backups alone. Connect the HD to the TC and select it as the TM destination, and Let Time Machine start fresh on it.  You can always see and restore from the old ones via the Browse... option, as above.   (There is a way to speed up the first backup; see the blue box in #Q2 of Using Time Machine with a Time Capsule.)
    * Copy ("Archive") the TC's internal disk to the external HD, per the green box in #Q6 of the same article.  Then select the external as your Time Machine destination via Time Machine Preferences.
    Is this simply deferring a problem issue to another time (aagh)? Or to somehow try and remove this inconsistency and remove case-sensitive formatting from all tech items, even if this might mean reformatting and losing old backup data?
    No.  There's not really a problem, unless you change the case of file/folder names and try to restore the old ones to the same place via the TM browser, per the link in my earlier post.  That's the only possible downside.
    Does Time Machine require case-sensitive formatting on its destination drive?
    No.  It's the default, but case-ignorant is fine, unless you ever want to add a case-sensitive volume.  Then you're in a pickle.
    Or does Time Capsule only function witih case-sensitive formatting?
    No.  The TC's actual disk is case-ignorant; it's only the Time Machine sparse bundle that's case-sensitive by default.
    The benefit of case-sensitive formatting as Apple default seems rather unclear to me
    It's the default only for Time Machine backups.  Everything else defaults to case-ignorant.
    The advantage is, once you've been backing-up your internal HD for weeks, months, or years, and want to add a case-sensitive external HD to be backed-up, you can.   If the backups are case-ignorant, you can't.

    Currently, I am using attribute kSecLabelItemAttr and providing the subject name to create the attribute list for the API "SecKeychainSearchCreateFromAttributes" which gives the certificate.

  • Bugs due to case sensitivity of objects?!

    Hi,
    When migrating from MSAccess 97 to Oracle

    during the migration due to case sensitivity
    of Oracle objects. Specifically, the usage
    of the double quoted is not always correct
    resulting in JET/DAO 3011 messages. I dont
    know in which part of the chain is the
    problem though (Access, ODBC or Workbench).
    Is it possible, using Workbench wizard to
    create and reference all objects in a non-
    case sensitive manner (tablespace,
    tables ...) to avoid these problems.
    If not, any suggestion will be welcome,

    If you use SSO, then the passwords are case sensitive. If you are not using SSO, then you may need to create table that contains case sensitive passwords and associate them to database passwords.

    Hi all,
    I am new to oracle9iAS. I wolud like to know whether oracle9iAS is case sensitive towards the JSP names accessed. If so, is there any option to make it insensitive.
    Thankx in advance
    kishor

    Right. And for resource names, case sensitivity depends on operating system used. That's why it's better to use case sensitive system like Unix* than insensitive like Windows*. It cannot happen one resource has many different names and thus, your JSP compilations (you mentioned in another topic) will get always the same name.

  • Case sensitive table names and column names in 8i or 9i databases

    Hi everybody,
    I've got a couple of business-side colleagues who insist that Oracle table and column names are case sensitive. That is, there is a setting in the set up of a database that lets you pick if table and column names are case sensitive. For example, this would mean that there could be a table named EMP in a given schema schema plus a table named emp in that same schema.
    Can this be true? I'd be surprised of course, but I've been surprised before.
    Thanks for any direction.
    -- Bill Loggins

    You can do it, but I would avoid it like the plague.
    SQL> create table "a" (b date);
    Table created.
    SQL> create table "A" (b date);
    Table created.
    I think I would refuse to work on a database where this has been used !

  • Case sensitive sql - table and field names

    I have a weird problem.
    I have a client which works with MS SQL SERVER 2000.
    database collation name is: Turkish_CI_AS
    at the beginning I have this sql statement:
    "select value from [OWNER].setting"
    but because this table exists in database as "SETTING", I get java.sql.SQLException -
    [Microsoft][SQLServer 2000 Driver for JDBC][SQLServer]Invalid object name 'setting'.
    while I change the sql statement to:
    "select VALUE from [OWNER].SETTING"
    it works ok.
    I uses also other databases, but it works ok with small letters.
    How can avoid this problem? should I change all the sql statements to
    upper case?
    I will appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

    I am not sure about case sensitivity of tables, but as a convention, I always use table names in UpperCase separated only by _.
    I don't remember this to be a problem with Oracle or Sybase.
