Catalog on Eternal, OK?

Hi!  I got a new Mac and after two weeks of dealing with question marks and exclamation points, multiple catalogs and folders everywhere...moving and consolidating files, etc., I am happy that I've now got everything neatly into folders and everything up and working wonderfully--all 500,000 photos!  (I learned so much about how NOT to do things while cleaning up the mess that I made in the the first place.)
I've put my catalog (Ircat, Irdata) and photos all in one place: On a 4TB external HDD. I've cloned that disk as a backup.
My questions:
1. I've been reading that catalogs cannot be on an external drive. Is this true? I believe that mine are indeed on an external drive.
2. Should catalogs be on the computer itself instead? Are there advantages to this?
IF YES, then:
3. If I have Lightroom "Back up catalog" under "Catalog Settings/General" when I close Lightroom down, could I just use that copy (I suppose I'll have to relink question-marked folders, yes?)  instead of the external catalog?
I'm hoping someone knowledgeable will tell me that having everything nice and neat on an external should be fine.

Yes, that's fine...
Ideally, you should put your catalog on a really fast drive which can be internal or external–it really doesn't matter. The catalog can NOT be put on a network attached drive however (although the images in the catalog can be on NAS).
The catalog backup can also be on any drive and as long as your images in the catalog are not moved, it should not produce a problem if you need to restore your catalog from a backup.

  • Doing catalog work on laptop when away from desktop computer

I just recently moved from doing all my work on a single machine (laptop, MacBook Pro) connected to a 5 bay external hard drive to using 2 machines, a desktop (Mac Pro) hooked up to the 5 bay eternal HD and the laptop.
My set up - Desktop running Snow Leopard, Laptop Leopard. They are networked with an Airport Extreme. I log into the Desktop from the laptop rather than use File Sharing.
I'm still using Lightroom 2.7, single license, so I wouldn't have LR running on both machines at the same time. Catalog is stored on the Desktops internal HD - User/Pictures/Lightroom/Catalog. I use a single catalog, 30,000+ images. Catalog is approx 550MB.
I've got it pretty well figured out how to export a catalog from the laptop to the desktop after returning with images from a shoot, but, while I work a lot at my desk on the desktop, I want to be able to work on my catalog with my laptop. Hoping for some advise on how to do that. I'm looking to only do catalog type work on the laptop - evaluating, rating, deleting, keywording etc. I will not be doing any Developing or working on the actual image files, which are stored on the external 5 bay HD connected to the Desktop.
    2 situations:
    1. When I'm in another part of my space with my laptop and connected to my desktop (wireless), I go to the catalog located on the Desktop, I get a msg that Lightroom catalogs cannot be opened on network volumes. So how do I simply work on my LR catalog, using the laptop, when I'm networked to the Desktop?
    2. When I'm away from my space, traveling etc, so not networked to the desktop. In this case I assume I would want to Export a copy of the catalog onto the laptop or a small portable HD and work on it while I'm away. But when I return, should I then Export the whole catalog back to the Desktop, or is there a Synchronize type function where LR updates the changes only? Is there a safe way to do this that minimizes the risk of introducing errors if the whole master catalog is moved back and forth? Should I break up my single large catalog in to smaller bite sized chunks that would be easier to move back and forth?
Thanks for any advise. If this is easier to accomplish on LR 3, that would be a good reason to upgrade.

My master catalogs are heftier than I want to clone all over the place so I use the following method.
In LR, put the files you want to work on in a subfolder of your Primary catalog
Export Folder As Catalog with previews, but without including the DNG's
At your new location/machine work on that catalog.
Here's the part that's no fun, (obviously have a backup of your catalog before you do this)
In your primary catalog REMOVE that folder from your catalog. (this will remove all references within your catalog, but leave the RAW files alone where they were)
You then FILE-->IMPORT FROM ANOTHER CATALOG, and import your subfolder export back into your Primary catalog.
It'll bring all of your changes and previews back into your Primary catalog but with unlinked RAW files.
Click on the question mark in the corner of the thumbnail that's telling you it doesn't know where the source files are and LOCATE the original file again in your file structure, with the FIND NEARBY MISSING PHOTOS box checked.
Overly complicated for what it is, but it gets the job done.

  • The eternal log in of the spotless iMac

I have an iMac G4, this morning I got a new upgrade on Software Update, so I downloaded it and restarted. Well, I haven't been able to log in since then. I enter my password and it looks like it's going to load my desktop but it just takes me back to the login screen, again and again.
I followed these instructions: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306840. But it didn't work.
I tried the Safe Boot trick but again I end up in the eternal loop of the log in screen.
Do you guys have any idea of what may help? Since I haven't backed up my Mac I'd prefer if the solution wasn't too radical.
    TIA
    A very sad Mac user

Rodney: I tried to follow those instructions, I connected the sick iMac G4 to my MacBook via firewire to delete the .plist files but it didn't work cause the G4 freezes and it doesn't show up on the MacBook.
Barry: I tried the Repair Disk thing but First Aid can't find my HD The Archive and Install doesn't work either cause when the Leopard disc asks me where I want the system installed my HD doesn't show up as an option.
I ran fsck and I get this:
    ** /dev/rdisk0s9
    ** Root file system
** Checking Journaled HFS Plus volume.
    ** Checking Extents Overflow file.
    ** Checking Catalog file.
    disk0s9: I/O error.
    Invalid node structure
    (4, 796)
    ** Rebuilding Catalog B-tree.
    disk0s9: I/O error.
** The volume Brian could not be repaired ***
Supposedly I gotta keep doing it until it tells me that my Mac is ok. I've done it a bunch of times but I keep getting the exact same thing.
    Any ideas?

  • I am trying to restore my catalog having previously done a back up to an external hard drive and subsequently an incremental backup. I am using Photoshop Elements 11 and the only option given in the restore procedure is to open a .tly file.

I have done this but now the restore function is asking for yet another file, which i assume to be the original back up, but that is the only .tly file since the only other relevant file appears to be called catalog.buc but that is just not visible when using the restore function? How do I continue from here with this restoration of my catalog?

    Martin_Had a écrit:
Thank you Andaleeb. I appear to have an old backup of a year ago, and a more recent full back up plus an incremental backup.
Regrettably I don't really understand what is going on because firstly the restore does not complete its cycle so I cannot see what that backup file contains and secondly all I have read would suggest that the .tly file is the full backup and the catalog.buc file is the incremental backup. For the present, the catalog shows the photos for 2014 which makes me think I might have backed from the old back up file.
I am minded to create another catalog and try again.
Any views on what I can do?
A backup (full or incremental) is a folder, not a file. It contains renamed pictures file copies as well a copies of the files and subfolders of the original catalog. The catalog.buc is a renamed copy of the database of your original catalog while the backup.tly. That backup.tly file contains the information to restore the renamed pictures where you decide, the original location or a new custom one. You can't do anything with the backup yourself, only the restore process can do the job if it finds the backup.tly file. In the case of an incremental backup, you have to tell the restore process where to find the incremental backup folder; it finds the backup.tly file in that folder and finds what is to restore there; then it asks you for the previous backup folder (in your case the full backup); you then browse to that full backup folder so that the restore process can find find the backup.tly there; the restore then deals with the rest of the files to restore.

  • How can I organize catalogs in a transparent matter in one place?

Hi, I have around 35'000 image files registered in different catalogs in different directories which I would like to merge and copy on to one external HD, into one new catalog. How would you proceed? copy the photos first with another file management programme (finder on the MAC) and then import them all into the Lightroom library? Thanks for sharing your experiences.
    Kuno

The way I would do it:
Create a new catalog (File > New catalog); alternatively, choose one existing catalog as your main catalog.
From the main catalog, import the photos from all the other catalogs (File > Import from catalog).
In the LR library, move the photos to their final location on the external HD (by dragging and dropping folders in the Folders panel).
That way, you will preserve all the work you've already done in LR, and LR will be able to find all the photos in their new location.

  • How can multiple users share a catalog?

PSE 5 - We have multiple users sign on to the same PC.  The catalog is created on a network drive that all have access to.  Photos added to the catalog by one user are not accessible by another user.  Is the catalog profile-dependant?  Is there some setting I am missing?

The users can open the photos directly in Windows Picture Viewer but, for some users, the catalog looks empty in Photoshop Elements.
    1. Verify that each account is indeed loading the same catalog.  Do Help > System Info within the PSE Organizer to verify the catalog name and location is identical.   Perhaps one or more the accounts is opening another default (empty) catalog.
    2. Ensure the Organizer is showing you all the files:
    a. In View > Media Types, check all the types.
    b. In the Organize pane on the right, check Hidden to see if any of the cataloged photos are marked "hidden".
    c. Do Fine > Clear Date Range.
    d. If Back To All Photos is showing in the upper right, click it.

  • How do I update my old Organizer catalog for a new version of the program?

When you install a new versiobn of the program and start the Organizer, it will usually give you a pop-up asking if you want to convert the catalog from a previous version. However, if that tool doesn't automatically launch, contributor Barb O offers this manual solution:
Go to File menu Catalog command and you will see a button for Convert. Click that convert button to start the catalog conversion process manually.
Note that IF you have more than one catalog, each one converts separately.
BEFORE you start your new program, go to your old Organizer's catalog and select:
    -- Catalog > Repair
-- File > Reconnect > All Missing Files
    -- Catalog > Repair (again)
The logic here is that a "cleaned up" prior version catalog is less likely to have problems during the upgrade process.

I recommend you ask that in the PSE forum. I'm sure there is some import/ export hocuspocus involved...

  • Images once exported (RAW) do not show up in catalog or previous imorts not film strips in library nor develop.  They are in the files to which they were exported

Not sure how to get this going seems rather redundant.
In the last 4 - 5 days I have imported several hundred RAW files, done some minimal post processing and exported these images to various files (I have verified that the images are in the files to which I exported them).  These images to no show up in previous imports nor do they show up in library nor develop film strips.  How or can I get them to show up for additional review and possible manipulation.  I recently did this same operation with largle JPEG files and all went well.
I did initially have some problems with LR recognizing the RAW files but some how was able to overcome that ( perhaps a card  issue they are old card and the JPEGs were on a new card hmmmm!!??)
Any ways I supposed I can reimport them from their current files but that is a redundant pain.  Suggestions would be apprediated

One possibility is that you accidentally opened a new/different catalog.
Look at File->Open Recent and open the catalogs shown there and see if your photos appear

  • More than one catalog and size?

Hello to the Gurus present!<br /><br />I have: PSE 5.0, Windows XP and Vista CPU, lots of disk space.<br /><br />What is the general concensus: One catalog for 20,000 pictures or more with a lot of tags or is it better to have several catalogs?<br /><br />When I look at a picture with Alt-Enter I can see the tags, but not the collections. So, I guess, these are not written to the files. Would it be a good idea then to make "dummy tags" for collections?<br /><br />Also, is there a limit for the file size? My wife adds surely 10,000 to 15,000 pics a year now and I am "supposed" <grin-grin> to keep them in order.<br /><br />Thanks,<br />Alexander

    Colin,
Thanks for coming back quickly to my query with some answers.
    Split/Merge catalogs:
I have never tried to split a catalog (no need up to now), but I managed to combine two catalogs by
    - tagging all pictures in both catalogs
    - writing the tags to the files ( I have only PSD, TIFF and JPG)
    - start a new catalog
    - import the directories where the pictures are
    - seems to have worked, except that I forgot in one small directory at the time of import to tick the import tags
    Collections:
Thanks for info. Will start using them.
    Limit on file size:
I was thinking on catalog size. My guess is that there is in the MS Access DB no real upper limit which a normal mortal would reach. The image size? My largest up to now are around 50MB as I do not work commercially. No problem in this area. My new HP Pavilion has 2 x 300 GB plus a 300 GB "Personal Drive" in an exchange bay and I have external drives to dump and backup.
    DEL Key:
Yup! I agree THE most important tool! LOL! We did manage to reduce the 15,000 plus of 2006 to 8644. If I delete one more the rolling pin might be flying in my direction! :-)

  • SRM Classic - Automatic PO creation in R/3 only for PReqs based on catalogs

    Dear Experts,
in SRM 7.0 Classic Scenario, i am facing the following question w.r.t. automatic PO creation on the R/3 side:
Is it possible to have automatic PO creation in R/3 only for those purchase requisition items, that are based on shopping cart items from a third party punch out catalog?
The idea is, that the requisitioner on the SRM EBP side shops in a catalog. Once the the SC is approved and the purchase requisition is created in the R/3 system, automatically a PO should be created based on that PReq. This would save the time for the buyer, who do not need to pay attention to this document, because the purchase from the catalog guarantees the buyer, that the already pre-agreed conditions are getting applied.
But PReqs that are based on Free Text shopping cart EBP items must not be taken into account for the automatic PO creation.
Is there a way to distinguish between the catalo-based and the non-catalog based PReq positions?
    Thank you.

    Hello Ashutosh,
thank you very much for that idea!
I would have the following question w.r.t. to such configuration:
If i configure that the PO creation for complete SC should happen for a certain purchasing group, would it be somehow possible to arrange that when a Catalog item is put into the shopping cart, that only that certain purchasing group gets defaultet? (the idea behind this is, to leave the free text shopping carts to already known purchasing groups and to keep the purchase requisition as the backend object for this configuration. And additionally to create new purchasing groups, that should be linked to the catalog purchases and to POs as the backend objects).
    Thanks again for the help!

Auto PO transaction ME59N comes with huge selection crieteria. If you can distinguish between catelog vs non catalog requisition then it very easy to set up variant to filter non catalog based requistion. you can also think about ehnacement of polulating text fields like Requisitioner or Requirement tracking number  with unque idetifier  in case of non catalog based PR then you can set variant to filter out those requistions..

  • Free Shipping only on select catalogs

    Hello all!
I have created two new products in a whole different "November Specials" category for my store that offer a free item with purchase of one of two regular products. I did this so I could discount the price of the free item.
I also need to offer free shipping on black friday on all the regular priced items in the main store category.
I DO NOT want the free shipping to include those two new products I created ...
The issue I'm having is the "Apply Discount to Selected Catalogs" is not allowing me to choose the main store category. So, the free shipping option will apply to all catalogs.
Can anyone provide me with any help/insight here?
I'm about to move my client's site from Volusion which is a hot mess, but they've got their stuff together when it comes to creating a wide variety of discount packages and filtering is much easier.
    Thanks!
