Catching an exception within a JSP

Hi all,
I need to catch an exception in a JSP before the errorPage handles it. Have tried with try-catch but it seems like the exception is thrown to the errorPage anyway. Do you know of any technique to handle this.
In other words: I would like to specify program logic for one exception within the JSP itself. Let us say Customer.Authenticate() throws an Exception when the given e-mail is not included in customer-DB. I would like to append logic instead of being redirected to errorPage.
Anyone done this, can it even be done?
,Chr

I would try keeping the error page as it is and still adding the logic in the catch block. If that does not help, then remove the error page and use <jsp:forward> (after your logic) in the catch block to explicitly go to the error page.
or if you want to process that logic anyways in case of an exception, try adding your logic in the finally block.

You can however put any logging or even an if statement into your JSP to display the error or control the flow based on the error.

  • Catch the exception thrown when database is not available in web.xml

    Hi,
    I have an app that uses a mysql database configured in the web.xml configuration file - a javax.servlet.jsp.jstl.sql.dataSource param
    There have been occasions where that server has been down, and this causes the expected error stack trace to be dumped to the jsp page
    Is there anywhere I can catch that exception in the jsp page, so the end user does not see that nasty error?
    Thanks,
    Tom

    You have answered your own question, catch the exception with a try catch block !!
    try
    // doing something stupid
    catch (Exception exception)
    out.println("sorry user, you did something really stupid");
    // it is acceptable to do nothing here if you dont want to handle the
    // error or output a message
    }

    Hi there,
    I'm building my first JSP application. I still don't
    know what happens to an exception thrown inside a
    scrptlet in a JSP page.I believe that any scriptlet exceptions get wrapped into a ServletException. At that time, if you have an errorPage defined for you JSP page, then it will go there. If you don't then the server will try to find the particular exception type in an <error-page> stanza in the web.xml. If it finds a mapping, it will go to that mapping, otherwise it will go to a default error page (container specific).
    A quick glance at your design shows some big problems though that you may or may not hit (depending on how often you hit the page in your testing). The primary one is that in your PCliente class, you are opening up database connections/statements/results sets w/o closing them. You will run out of connections/cursors at some point b/c of this. You need to do your reads from the database and then close those resources (in a finally block to make sure they get closed). Read the data in a lightweight java object that the JSP can use to actually get the data.
    Also, you only need to register the driver manager once. You can do this in static initialization block.

  • Best Practice: JavaFX pattern for "Catching all Exceptions"

    Hi,
    what is on the current JavaFX Standard the best way to catch all Exceptions (centralized) within my JavaFX application...
    I read thread outside this Oracle Forum who recommend following:
    1. Thread.setDefaultUncaughtExceptionHandler(new MyExceptionHandler());
    --> catch all runtime exceptions
    2. http://stackoverflow.com/questions/12318861/javafx-2-catching-all-runtime-exceptions
    --> Implementing some source code who wrap the current GUI thread...
    3. I read something like:
    "JavaFX exception handling is almost identical to that in Java, apart from the fact that checked exceptions are handled in the same way as unchecked exceptions. This is good news for most Java programmers moving to JavaFX because you are no longer obliged to catch and handle exceptions."
    Sounds very good! But where/how can I do this ???

  • Catching an exception in an JSF page

    Hi,
    I have made the following example:
    In my jsf page I have:
    <a4j:commandButton id="save" action="#{settings.save}"
    reRender="attributes" />
    <h:outputLabel value="Save" for="save" />
    <table width="100%" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0">
    <!--
    <tr>
    <td> If exception occurs add extra buttons here for more actions
    </td>
    </tr>
    -->
    <tr>
    <td><ui:include src="/attributes.xhtml">
    <ui:param name="parent" value="#{settings}" />
    </ui:include></td>
    </tr>
    </table>
    In SettingsBean.java
    public void save() throws exception
    try
    doSomething();
    catch(Exception e)
    // catch the exception here and send it back to the jsf page????
    I want to be able to catch the exception when it occurs in my jsf page. If the exception arrises I want to add some extra buttons.
    Any ideas how to resolve this?
    Thanks in advance

    JSF does not work like JSP, even when using JSP with JSF, in that the execution is decoupled from the page being processed. So you cannot catch exceptions in JSF views.
    Assuming I have sufficiently confused you now, let me give you some ideas as to how to handle your situation. The usual way this is handled is to register a message when an exception occurs which are then displayed by <h:messages> or <h:message> components.
    However, this does not appear to be suitable for your purpose as you require specialized output when the exception occurs. So you could store a flag (or even the exception itself) in a backing bean and use the rendered property of all components to conditionally display your buttons. BUT you will need to take care that the dynamic value of the rendered property will be the same on the subsequent request or the actions for the buttons will not be queued.

  • Catching an exception (help)!!!

    Hi everyone, the problem i have is when the user enters a number that is out of bounds (higher or lower than the excepted values it should prompt the program to write to the screen "out of range, try again" or something along those lines.
    However, it instead just prints "error - program terminated" which is the message that should be printed when there is a different problem within the program.
    Can anyone help me get the program to print the correct messages, you can see what i mean from the code:

    I barely know where to begin.
    Start by printing out the stack trace when you catch an exception. That'll give you more information than the message you're printing out. You know the program is terminating - you need to know why.
    You're writing in a VERY procedural style. There's little or nothing object-oriented about what you're doing.
    You've got a bunch of stuff in that constructor that really doesn't belong there. You shouldn't have code to continuously ask a client for a floor and room number in a constructor. That really belongs in an application that drives the object, like the main method that you wrote.
    Your FlatCost can read in a file that contains floor/room/price information, but if I were writing the application I'd read it in and store it in the ArrayList as you've done. Then I'd have a getCost() method that would take floor and room count as parameters and return the total cost.
    Learning how to program is learning how to debug. I'd rewrite things a little bit and put System.out.println() statements into the code to narrow down exactly where the error was occurring and why. It won't take you long to figure it out. You don't even need a fancy debugger or IDE.

  • Problem accessing exception object in jsp error page - Apache Tomcat 5.0.25

    Hi all,
    I'm thoroughly confused and need some help. I've deployed a very simple web application in Apache Tomcat 5.0.25 to test exception handling - errortest.jsp and error.jsp. errortest.jsp throws a divide by zero exception if executed with default values in text fields.
    When I put the directive IsErrorPage="true" in error.jsp i get a HTTP 500 error when error.jsp is accessed. If I remove it error.jsp is displayed but I cant access the exception object - if I try to I get an exception below:
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: Unable to compile class for JSP
    An error occurred at line: 5 in the jsp file: /error.jsp
    Generated servlet error:

    out.print(exception.getMessage());
    ^
    1 error
    Below is the code for the two jsp pages:
    errortest.jsp:
    <%@ page errorPage="error.jsp" %>
    <html>
    <head><title>Error test</title></head>
    <body>
         <form action="errortest.jsp" method="post">
         Enter first number:<input type="text" name="first" value="5"/><br>
         Enter second number:<input type="text" name="second" value="0"/><br>
         <input type="submit"/>
         </form>
         <%
         if (request.getMethod().equals("POST")) {
              int first = Integer.parseInt( request.getParameter( "first" ) );
              int second = Integer.parseInt( request.getParameter( "second" ) );
              int answer = first/second;
         %>
    </body>
    </html>
    NB: I am able to catch and display the exception if I use a try/catch block around the division as shown below.
    try {
    int answer = first/second;
    } catch( Exception e) {
    e.printStackTrace( new PrintWriter(out) );
    error.jsp (first draft)
    NB: HTTP 500 error occurs when directive "isErrorPage" is added:
    <%@ page isErrorPage="true" %>
    <html>
    <head><title>Error Page</title></head>
    <body>
    </body>
    </html>
    error.jsp (second draft)
    NB: directive is removed but exception thrown when implicit exception object is accessed. error.jsp displays if exception object is not accessed:
    <%@ page %>
    <html>
    <head><title>Error Page</title></head>
    <body>
    <%=exception.getMessage()%>
    </body>
    </html>

  • Recommended Practice for Exception handling in JSP portlets

    Hi,
    This may be a redundant question, but hope to get some feedback on the generally used practice of catching exceptions in a JSP based Portal application.
    Is it okay to just make use of the standard JSP errorpage directive in each of the JSP portlets to point to the same errorpage.jsp. If a problem occurs in any of the portlets, the userfriendly message in the errorpage.jsp would be rendered.
    Of course there could be some kind of error logging done in the errorpage.jsp to track the error stack. This also means, that you would not want to catch any exceptions inside each of the portlet JSPs but rather let the errorpage directive, be the catch all?
    regards
    -Ananth

    Mohana,
    Pls ignore the voice mail,it was for something else and I was able to talk to Peter as well about this.
    Regarding the error/exception handling -
    If the errorPage.jsp is used in each of the JSP portlets with the help of the JPS errorPage directive, if a general system failure or major appln. error occurs, you will get the errorPage.jsp containing the user friendly message to show up in each of the half a dozen portlets on the page!!. Is that allright.
    You cannot really redirect the entire page using the code inside the JSP portlet. It will only render inside the same portlet. The only way you can do this is to use Javascript.

  • Exception occurred processing JSP page

    I'm a Java newbie... I'm trying to write a very simple (I think) .jsp file to test the connectivity to our Oracle DB.
    here's my entire .jsp file...
    <%@ page import="java.io.*"%>
    <%@ page import="java.sql.*"%>
    <%@ page import="javax.sql.*"%>
    <%
    String dname;
    String query = "select DNAME from DEPT";
    Connection conn = null;
    ResultSet rs = null;
    Statement stmt = null;
    try {
    Class.forName("oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver");
    // Create a connection to the database
    conn = DriverManager.getConnection("jdbc:oracle:thin:@hostname:1521:SID", "username", "password");
    } catch (ClassNotFoundException e) {
    // Could not find the database driver
    } catch (SQLException e) {
    // Could not connect to the database
    stmt = conn.createStatement();
    rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
    while ( rs.next() ) {
    dname = rs.getString("dname");
    System.out.println("dname: " + dname);
    %>
    I'm getting the following error...
    org.apache.jasper.JasperException: An exception occurred processing JSP page test3.jsp at line 23
    20: // Could not connect to the database
    21: }
    22:
    23: stmt = conn.createStatement();
    24:
    25: rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
    26: while ( rs.next() ) {
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

    You need to move all of this:
    stmt = conn.createStatement();
    rs = stmt.executeQuery(query);
    while ( rs.next() ) {
    dname = rs.getString("dname");
    System.out.println("dname: " + dname);
    }inside your try/catch. if any of them throw an exception, your not catching it.
    Further you should use a finally block to close your connection.

  • Can't catch the exception when transaction rollback ,BPEL/SOA 11G,updated!

    Hi Guys ,
    I have two insert/update invoke actions through dbadpter in my BPEL process .
    When I set the GetActiveUnitOfWork property of those two db adapters to true ,it successfully makes the global transaction work . any of them failed will cause the other rollback.
    But the CatchAll brunch can't catch the exception in that case,
    I can only see exception message from the system output :
    02/11/2009 11:36:46 AM oracle.toplink.transaction.AbstractSynchronizationListener beforeCompletion
    WARNING:
    Local Exception Stack:
    Exception [TOPLINK-4002] (Oracle TopLink - 11g Release 1 (11.1.1.1.0) (Build 090527)): oracle.toplink.exceptions.DatabaseException
    Internal Exception: java.sql.SQLIntegrityConstraintViolationException: ORA-00001: unique constraint (Table1_PK) violated
    from BPEL console , you can't even see the error , the process finished with no exception.
    When I set GetActiveUnitOfWork to false, CatchAll brunch is able to catch the exception , but global rollback is not working .
    I try all the other method like set the transaction property of BPEL to required , using checkpoint() in java embedding . it looks like only way is set GetActiveUnitOfWork to true, but can't catch exception.
    Here are some updated:
    Here is my process
    Main Sequence
    Invoke (dbadapter update)
    Invoke (dbadapter insert)
    Global CatchAll
    Invoke(jmsAdapter sendjms)
    if I disable the CatchAll branch , when insert failed , the insert will rollback as well, even GetActiveUnitOfWork set to false.
    enable CatchAll branch , even doing nothing in this branch , the update won't rollback when insert failed. it looks like when catch the exception , bpel seems not rollback , I try to add throw rollback in catchall branch, no any effect.
    any clue ?

    Hi All,
    We are also facing a similar kind of issue.
    We have a simple BPEL which will makes use of JAva embedding to call an end point to check its availibility.
    The Java code for cheking the enpoint connectivity is below
    try{
    boolean endpointAvailable = false;
    long start = System.currentTimeMillis();
    int endpointTestURL_port = 8445 ;

    When we run the above as a seperate java program it runs fine i.e goes to the catch block and catches the exception.
    But when we run it within the java embedding in BPEL(11G) it gives us the follwoing error.

    We tried the following
    Increase the JTA timeout in the EM console to a larger value like 600 secs.
    The BPEL instance is not getting created.
    Any help would be appreciated

  • Catch the exception

    package com.foo;
    class ABC
    method() throws Exception
    try
    // blah
    }catch(Exception e)
    in JSP
    =======
    <%try{
    ABC a = new ABC();
    a.method()
    }catch(Exception e) %>when method() of the class ABC throws Exception, it did not caught by the try-catch block in the JSP. but i want to catch and show my user an exception....how is that possible ?

    scratching head Data won't throw exceptions? If I
    have to look up data from a database or format a
    Date...nevermind. Aparently catch doesn't work
    anyway. shrug
    If I see you making a DB call from a JSP, I'll make you eat your keyboard. And why would formatting a date object to a String throw an Exception?

  • Not able to catch the exception

    Hi,
    I'm trying to run an ADF page (Test.jspx) . The only page content I have is an embedded BI report.
    I have used a report executable in my page definition.
    A sample code snippet is:
    <executables>
    <biContent id="biExecBinding1" connectionId="TMBIPresentationServerConn" path="/shared/TMSharedFolders/MOT_SalesAccount" type="biReportContent" xmlns="http://xmlns.oracle.com/bi/report/bindings">
    </executables>
    Here TMBIPresentationServerConn is the name of the connection of the BI Server.
    If BI Server is down, on running my page , an exception is being thrown by the framework.
    I want to catch this exception and perform my own logic, but since i am using a binding context for report , i am not able to catch this exception.
    Could you please let me know how can i catch the exception if BI is down?
    Thanks
    Nutan

    (as I suspected from your first post)
    You are using a version of JDeveloper that isn't available to the general public, and are asking about it on a public forum. You should use the internal Oracle forum - I don't know the URL, because I am one of the unwashed general public ;)

  • How to write to a log file within a JSP

    Hello everybody,
    do you know how to write to a log file within a JSP.
    my code is (/space/SP/tlf/ExcepcionJava.jsp):
    <html>
    <body bgColor=#C4E1FF>
    <%@ page import="java.io.*" %>
    <%
         FileWriter salida = new FileWriter(response.encodeURL("log.txt"));
         salida.write(request.getParameter("errorMsg"));
         salida.close();
    %>
    </body>
    </html>.. I run under Solaris, Jrun 2.3.3
    I have also test with getServletContext().getRealPath(), but I get /netsrv/nes/docs/ instead of /space/SP/tlf/

    Hi,
    Give the full path of the log file to the FileWriter. Such as;
    FileWriter salida = new FileWriter(response.encodeURL("/usr/local/tomcat/logs/testlogs/log.txt"));
