Categories in Address Book

I am trying to create categories in Address Book. I found this helpful hint in support:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=AppleScript/2.1/en/as2029.html
When I go to the folder where the plug in is supposed to be it is empty
Library/Address Book Plug-Ins folder. My MacBook is brand new....suggestion?

what exactly are you trying to achieve in ab? the link you have referenced pertains to adding apple scripts to ab. you would first have to find the apple script you would like to use for the purpose you would like to use it - or create it - and then add it so that it works with ab.
do you mean categories as in creating groups in which you would move your contacts, in other words having a work group, a personal group, a family group? if so then launch ab, go to file>new group and add your group, or click on the + sign at the bottom of the left hand side column.
let me know if i misunderstood your query.
hope this helps

  • No Categories in Address Book = none in Palm

Just switched over from Windows - happily - and all my Contacts are now in Apple's AddressBook. I use MissingSync to sync AddressBook to my Treo, but since there's no Category field in AddressBook, I cannot sort by categories in my Palm.
I found that to be a very useful feature. For instance, if I was trying to think of the name of a restaurant, I could just look at the contacts in the Restaurants category. Now, I can't.
Has anyone come up with a workaround for this?

Missing Sync will in fact do this... If you have contacts in Address Book sorted into Groups, the group name will become the category in the Palm. It is admittedly not very elegant: you have to be sure not to have a contact in more than one group. And I hate not being able to see categories easily in Address Book, but at least it works on the Palm....

  • How can I automatically transfer Palm address categories to Address Book?

I've tried vcal export and tab/delimited export and the categorization is lost on the Mac. I also tried setting up the same categories in AB as I have on the Palm. Again, the addresses are NOT imported with the category info.
Is there any way of avoiding having to recategorize all the addresses MANUALLY on the Mac?

if you have never synced conect your iphone and go to the info tab. Select sync contacts with addressbook and hit apply. when prompted select merge and it will merge contacts.

  • Contacts and categories in address book multiple duplicates

Hello; I am not talking about having one duplicate but 200-300 of a single contact or a category. So please do not redirect this on the usual sync+icloud discussions...
I have resetted my AB but today they started multiplying like rabbits again.
I noticed that on my mac and I immediately disconnected iclould: contacts on icloud have not been affected so I guess the problem is on this machine.
I also had added a new category 3 days ago and it did not show un on iCloud, so something is definetively happening here.
Only things I am doing is working on the iCloud control panel, deseletting and reselecting the contact box, deleting all the contacs on this machine and then pulling again the information from icloud.
Any suggestion on how to solve this?
    Best,
    Giuseppe

Try the steps I outline here: After Lion upgrade, my addressbook does not work++
Note that with iCloud (or any other address server) there is a Sources folder with subfolders for each address server source info. Those folders also contain an addressbook-v22.abcddb file that you should delete.
And, as someone recently pointed out, I originally called the file addressbook.abcddb, which it is not.

  • Microsoft Exchange Categories in iCal, Address Book and Mail

I work in a Microsoft environment with my MacBook Pro and would like to use iCal, Address Book and Mail as my default applications rather than Microsoft Oulook 2011, however, there is not support for the Microsoft Exchange Categories to be replicated into the various Apple applications. This results in my address book not to differentiate any longer from my contact categories stored on the Exchange server, nor my calendar. Categories can be created in iCal and other Apple applications but it then requires for the event or contact to be duplication "On my Mac" which makes me loose my synchronization with other systems. Any idea about to fix that?

Same issue here. I would love to migrate to iCal but the lack of support for categories is a limiting factor. Same applies to Contacts.

  • How Do I edit the Categories in Office Address Book?

I have figured how to assign a category to an address in Office Address Book, but I can't edit the categories in order to create the categories I need.
When I open an address book entry, the categories pull-down menu is in the top bar, when I open up the menu, the choice to assign categories is there, right below it, it says "Edit Categories" but it is impossible to select it.
Any thoughts on how to edit the categories?

Ahhhh...Yeah. That should be automatically set up from the day you signed up. For example - if you signed all the digital paperwork with Honeydew Melon Publishing. The seller would then be Honeydew Melon Publishing.
One thing I can say is that although I'm big an Apple user for quite some time they've really dropped the ball on their service to smaller and independent publishers. You can't actually talk to anyone from what I've found, although I'd love to be corrected since I have a pending issue that's over a week old and have no idea what I've done for them to Remove my books from sale. And I had an earlier issue where they didn't respond for nearly 4 weeks.
If I find out something soon I'll let you know and vice versa. I've been racking my brain trying to figure out how to contact someone or to get them to set up a forum, similar to this, for publishers where they can respond to us directly and we can work with each other to find solutions.

  • Address book categories missing

In Palm Desktop by Access, my address book catetories are missing and I can't restore them.
I created new categories and intended to re-designate the catetory for each entry, however in the list view I am not able to change the catetgories at all.  And when I view the entry in a detailed view, the correct catetorie is already choose.  Re-choosing the category from this view does not change the unfiled status of the entry when in the list view.  So in list view, I can sort alphabetically, but I can't view individual catetories.
I have a back up that's about a week old, and I wouldn't loose that much to revert to that version, but I'd rather not if I can help it.  Can anyone offer a suggestion of how to solve this problem?
    Thanks,
    Liz

I answered in your other post but there is no category feature on the Z30 address book.
I don't use categories in my Outlook so I can't verify that one for you.

  • What happened to Address Book categories?

I was just starting to get everything together to send my Christmas cards out and have discovered that there is no way to print labels like I used to do from the Address Book.  I used to just go into the Address Book, select the "Xmas Card" category and print my sheets of labels.  Now, I can still see the categories when I look at the individual contacts, but I don't see a way to print a sheet of labels (i.e., every address in the Xmas category) for the specified category.
Is this function gone?  Is there any other way to do this from the Address Book?
    Thanks for any advice/replies.
    Karin

Never mind--I figured it out.  You just create a group and drag the contacts into it.  Then, you can print the address labels from there.  You can even select a specific template number from within the Print dialog box if you're using Avery labels, which I did.  Easy as can be!

  • Sync nano with Address Book but the categories are gone!!??

I have more than 200 contacts in my Address Book, but when I finished syncing it with my ipod nano, the categories are missing. I have to search the entire list to get to a contact I want. Can anyone tell me if that is normal?? Is there anything I can do about it?

Yes, it's normal. The iPod address book does not support sorting by categories.

  • I upgraded to Snow Leopard, made a change to Address Book that I need to correct, tried to use Time Machine to find the prior version and it keeps pulling up the later ones info. How do I use Time Machine to restore Address Book from a few hours ago?

This morning, I upgraded to Snow Leopard from v10.5.8. Then, I exported 11 contacts from our old Now Contact database, intending to import that info into Address Book. It was an experiment, as we have 1199 contacts in 20+ categories and want to eventually get them into Bento from Address Book. The export automatically created a file called Export.vcf on the desktop, after I highlighted the 11 contacts. I tried to look at the info, but when clicked it opens Address Book, which then simply asked if I wanted to import the 11 contacts to it. I clicked yes. Then in checking Address Book 7, not 11 contacts appeared. I clicked on "All Contacts" and there were 1630. We only have 1199, so where did the extra 400+ come from? Since I had already clicked twice on the Address Book window, I couldn't undo the import. So I thought 'Ok, I'll trash Address Book and go to Time Machine, find Address Book, go to right after the upgrade to SL, hit Restore and bingo. Nope. I keep getting the post-import info, not pre. Con someone direct me to a solution? I want to get rid of the import contacts plus the extra 300 or so ( I already had a hundred or so in several categories)? Then, I need to figure out (1) why ALL the old records were exported from Now Contact, (2) where they were hiding in that .vcf file when Address Book recognized that I only wanted to export 11, (3) why Address Book showed only 7 imports in the "Last Import" group, but showed ALL my contacts in the "All Contact" group, even though they should nearly all have been safely untouched in the Now Contact DBase file. PS, I am not especially computer savvy. Thanks for any enlightenment.

Booting From Snow Leopard Installer Disc
    1. Insert Snow Leopard Installer Disc into the optical drive.
    2. Restart the computer.
    3. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the "C" key.
    4. Release the key when the spinning gear below the dark gray Apple logo appears.
    5. Wait for installer to finish loading.
    Drive Preparation and Installation
    1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
    7. After formatting is complete quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.

  • I have the answer to Importing VCards into Address book

Ok after reading all the forums etc and banging my head against the wall for a couple of hour I have found a two stage solution to Importing VCards from Outlook into Address book.
As I have 978 contacts in about 14 categories I had to find an efficient solution, firstly I downloaded a small program called "Outpod": Backup iPod to PC,copy songs from iPod to computer,iPod to iTunes whilst it is old and talks about iPod it works perfectly on my Outlook 2010 version.
It doesn't actually "install", just run the .exe file from anywhere after you extract it. In Outpod select "Contacts" if you have multiple profiles it will then prompt for which profile to use, expand your Contacts list, and then select "categories" on the top bar.
All contacts are now displayed in their correct category, select all of the contacts in the first category, right click, and select  you want to export from a Category using Outpod, insert a thumbdrive on the PC, right click and select "Save selected items in one file", Outpod will ask you where you wish to save the file and gives you the opportunity to name the file. Just name the file the same name as the category you are exporting to, and repeat for all categories until you have them all on the USB stick.
Now to the Mac. Open Address Book on the Mac, create Groups (not "Smart Groups") to match all your categories. Now insert the thumb drive into the Mac, open it in the Finder until you can see all your files. with both windows open, highlight the Group in Address Book and then double click the corresponding file in the finder window. Shazam! all those contacts will appear in the correct group. repeat for all other Groups.
I find it astonishing that Apple just ignore issues like this, and "Last Import" not clearing it's cache for instance. So now I just have to figure out how to get a movie to auto play on a Keynote slide, another great product dissapointment, anyone?
    Cheers

Thank you thank you. UTF 16 did the trick. What I was trying to do was import/save addresses i found on whitepages.com directly to my address book. I can't seem to find an ideal way tht doesn't involve a few steps of cutting and pasting. anyone?

  • Missing information with Address Book

I've got a Centro, run Mac OS X 10.4.11, and managed to get iSync to play nice with my new Centro (palm os 5.4.9) and transfer over the years of information I have stocked up in iCal and Address Book.app. Everything seemed fine on the surface, but when I went to look at the contacts on the Centro, it only transfered some of the data. Particularly, I'm missing address from every contact that has only 1 address (which happens to be the vast majority). iSync managed to pull over the first address if there is a second one, but it has it mislabeled. For example:
    On the computer
    Contact : Me
    some phone numbers
    Home Address
    Work Address
    On the Centro
    Contact : Me
    some phone numbers
Home Address (which is labeled as Work)
Really quite frustrating. What am I doing wrong? I've done several searches using various keywords and 90% of the time I end up getting directed to buy more software (Missing Sync), on top of the several hundred dollars I've already shelled out on an operating system and palm hardware. Please, tell me there's a better way.
Less important, but equally annoying, are such small things as
-How do I file contact categories en masse from my computer?
-How do sync contact photos from Address Book.app to the Centro?
-How do I get locations to transfer from iCal to the Palm Calendar on the Centro?
-How do I get the Palm Calendar's categories to match with iCal's?
-How do I get the Palm Calendar to accept iCal's categorizations of appointments?
I tried posting this over in the Palm help forums, but got no responses, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
    Daniel

    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You have bumped up against the substantial, long term limitations of the iSync Palm Conduit, and iSync itself, with respect to the issues you point out.
There is no explicit support for contact and calendaring extensions introduced with later versions of the Palm personal information management applications. Categories, for example, are not supported. The conduit still does not, and—I dare say, never will—support the synchronization of any address labeled other than <home>.
Each of the issues you raise is addressed by Mark/Space with the Missing Sync for Palm OS, and that is the only workaround available to you.

  • Address Book sync to iPod Touch problems

First synch seemed ok but following synchs missing whole groups, new entries and changes, whether made on the pod or the Macbook. Set the itunes to overwrite on next synch, result; no addresses at all on the pod.
iTunes is now not showing the list of address book categories at all.
Have reset iSync history, rebuilt permissions and now out of ideas..

There are so many funky things being reported with syncing both Address Book and iCal, probably no one knows. Mine used to sync fine (before which upgrade I don't know), but now I get only the group names and absolutely no addresses! You might try resetting the sync history in iTunes (advanced tab I think); that has been reported to sometimes help. It could make it worse, though. Good luck.
Here's a place to report syncing bugs; maybe if Apple hears from enough of us these synching issues will get higher priority:

  • How can I do a Find & Replace in Address Book?

I asked this question in a different forum & they suggested I post the same question here because someone might have an Apple Script?!
Here is the link:  https://discussions.apple.com/community/feeds/messages?thread=3187576 but to keep things simple, I want to find certain words and phrases in the note section of my address book and update those to something else.  How can I accomplish this?
I have tried exporting and using numbers to make the changes but when I re-import those changes back to address book I get a huge mess of information.  Duplicate contacts and triplicate notes to say the least.  A suggestion was made to export ALL the information in the address book and then re-import it ( I was only exporting the names & notes previously ).  That poses new problems such as how to keep my custom categories in tacked.  Most of my contacts have things such as, 'John's Cell' and 'Susan's Work E-mail'.
    Thanks in Advance!
    R

The basic idea is as follows:
    set keyWords to {"word 1", "word 2", "phrase 3"}
    repeat with thisWord in kewWords
              tell application "Address Book"
set p to (every person whose note contains thisWord)
-- modify the text - depends on what you're trying to do
              end tell
    end repeat
exactly what code you need to modify the text will depend on how you want to modify it, but the basic idea will be something like (using text item delimiters):
              tell application "Address Book"
set q to my tid(p's note, thisWord)
set p's note to my tid(q, replacementText)
              end tell
    on tid(input, delim)
              set {oldTID, my text item delimiters} to {my text item delimiters, delim}
if class of input is list then
set output to input as text
              else
set output to text items of input
              end if
set my text item delimiters to oldTID
              return output
    end tid

  • How To Export from Mac address book to CSV file

In Mac's address book: How do you export a highlighted group of *contacts to a cvs file* (so that I can import in groups by my categories into Google contacts- that way it is easier to sort/designate the contacts one I get the contacts there into Google).
I can sync them all- but then I'd have to put them into their categories one at a time, there are too many...

(I'm used to ms office and pc's)

Okay, *I got this issue worked out;here's how.* (Unfortunately the mac app AB2CSV doesn't open up to the screens it's supposed to in order to choose and convert or save contacts to a csv file and did crash my address book- which was very scary to see my 1533 contacts vanish!! )
Luckily somehow I had made an archive file of them all and got them back into my mac Calendar unscathed -so I lucked out...
Today at my local Apple Store in Nashville *I was shown a better way-and I'm glad to share this with you*:(They also set up my mobile me and my itouch to sync my contacts and emails too-plus got my contacts synced up to my GoogleApps acnt- so now I am in the clouds, backed up, and liberated-in spite of myself!!)
*iWorks Numbers* works similar to msExcel, so you *open up Numbers* ;get on to a *new blank page*;also *open Address Book* and highlight the contacts from your address book and *drag them right on to your Numbers page*; like magic it looks like an excel spread sheet (you can choose the columns/headers you want to use ie name, phone #,street, city, email, etc even the notes); then you go up to *Share in the menu*; *choose csv file*; and *save it*...Thank you Apple store Green Hills!! you saved me today!!
