CD doesn't appear on desktop, can't eject from drive

Hi All,
I just got my new iMac today, love it! But when I inserted a CD into the drive, it won't appear on the desktop, and I can't eject it. I've tried these things:
-Restarting
-Restarting after pulling the power plug for 20 seconds
-Restart while holding down the mouse button
-Restart while pressing down the command-option-F-O keys
-Opening Disk Utility and selecting File > Eject (it's dimmed)
These are suggestions I found from other Discussion posts. Do you have any other suggestions? The last suggestion I read was to take it to the Apple store, I hope I don't have to do that.
From the number of posts I've seen on this problem, it seems to be common!
Thanks,
Lizzy

i need to use an hp 6215 printer with my mac book pro.  the driver installation disk doesn't work.  where can i get a driver that will work?

With the Lion it is essentially unnecessary to resort to external driver disks. What's more, most of those disks are incompatible with the OS and should not be used. The system already carries a wide variety of printer description files (aka PPDs, which is what modern printing systems use as "drivers") for a lot of brands. And there was an HP printer update just two days ago.
Just checked in mine and did indeed find that the HP OfficeJet 6200 Series, with or without Fax, is covered with the latest update.
So just go thru the motions of creating a proper printer instance:
Make sure the Mac "sees" the printer on the network.
System Preferences / Print & Scan
Click on the + button on the left column
Select the appropriate type of printer, will use IP for the rest of this
Select HP Jetdirect - Socket, default for HP network printers
Type the IP address or look it up
Name the printer for easy identification on the print dialog
Let the Mac identify the printer model or manually choose the driver
    Click Add.
Once the instance pops up in the list, can click on Options & Supplies for further config.

  • Can't restore iPod because it doesn't appear on desktop

I connected my ipod to my Mac, it showed up on the desktop but not in iTunes. The ipod window said Do not Disconnect. I waited a few minutes, then chose Eject iPod. I restarted the mac, reconnected iPod using a different FireWire port. The iPod no longer appeared on the desktop, and the Do Not Disconnect warning was still there. I switched to USB connection. No go. I ran Disk Utility Repair Permissions on my HD and restarted.
I've been downloading a lot of podcasts lately, don't know if that's the cause of this problem. I'm using iTunes 7.1.1 and Mac OS 10.4.9.
I found a solution for this problem in Archives, but it's dated 12/05, and I'm wondering if it still applies. Part of the solution says to run disk utility, select the ipod, then select Format. But I don't see Format as a choice on version 10.5.6 of Disk Utility. Maybe what was Format in 2005 is now called something else? Like maybe Partition? Here's the post (by john madson) from 2005:
"i can fix this but you will need a mac let me explain

One more thing: I reset my iPod (toggled Hold, etc.). It appeared in iTunes but not on the desktop, with the message "If your experiencing problems with your iPod, you can restore its original settings by clicking restore." Which I did. Got a window asking if I wanted iTunes to check for a new software update. I said yes. Got an exclamation-point msg "There was a problem downloading iPod software. The requested resource was not found. "

  • I can't move files or folders or delete files without authentication. Also, it doesn't appear that I can change permissions?

I can't seem to move or delete files or folders on my MacBook Air mountain lion system. It doesn't appear that changing permissions works either? Any ideas?

    Back up all data now.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • How to eject a dvd that is stuck and doesn't appear on desktop?

I did insert a dvd a few days ago and now it doesn't appear anywhere and I can not eject it. But when I turn on the computer the disc drive makes strange sounds. How can I eject it?

Disc drive making noises is not good. Even standard media rejection tricks such as holding down the mouse button which restarting the computer might not cause it to eject if the drive is mechanically malfunctioning.  You may have to look into getting the drive replaced and have whoever does it try to rescue to disc.

  • Blank CD-R doesn't appear on desktop/ burning impossible

Whenever I put a CD-R into the drive, iTunes starts, and everything looks ready to burn. However, the blank CD doesn't appear on the desktop. Also, I don't get the "what would you like to do with this CD-R" message. I have never burned many CDs, but I have burned a few in the past without this problem arising. I have tried reseting the computer to no avail. It doesn't just spit the CD out (like other people seem to have trouble with). It just will not burn. This is frustrating... anyone help?

    Hi MagooVU,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
What company makes the CD-R? You may want to look at Knowledge Base Document #88275 on Troubleshooting the slot load disc drive (Portables) and Knowledge Base Document #25402 on Factors that affect writing to or reading from optical media.

  • External HD doesn't appear on desktop sometimes

Sometimes my external HD doesn't appear on my desktop (connected with Firewire).
It spins up, and all I generally have to do is turn it off and turn it back on again for it to appear.
But obviously I wish it would just work the first time.
Using 10.6.1 on a Mac Pro, external drive is OWC Mercury.

Re: the link I think all the cables are fine, like I said all I have to do is turn the drive off and back on again and it will work.
    DU doesn't find any errors.
By reformat by you mean wiping the drive clean and reinstalling the system and then all my data? Sounds like a lot of work for what might just be a smaller problem (hopefully), I'd like to solve this but it's not worth it to me to do that much quite frankly (combined with the fact that I think 10.6.1 has some gremlins in it, so I'm not sure the problem wouldn't come back anyway).

  • Thunderbolt drive doesn't appear on desktop?

I have a G-Raid Thunderbolt drive that I've connected to an iMac and Air. In both cases, the drive doesn't show up in the Finder, or under the Devices sidebar. However, Disk Utility reports the drive is available, fine and is mounted. (Running Verify says the volume is fine)
I see the drive contents in Terminal by browsing /Volumes/
Any ideas why I can't see the drive otherwise?

My one Thunderbolt drive shows up in Finder when I tick the External disks box in Finder Sidebar Prefs. It disappears along with FW Drives when I untick that box. Cannot think why that does not work for you.

  • Airplay option doesn't appear on iPhone; speakers not available from iMac

I have an iMac running Yosemite 10.10.2, an iPhone running 8.1.3, the Bang & Olufsen A8 speakers & iPad dock and Telstra's Netgear Cable Home Network gateway CG3100D–2BPAUS.
When I remove the iPhone from the dock it used to bring the AirPlay icon into view on the screen, but it suddenly stopped appearing.
I would also like to be able to stream directly from online radio via the iMac to the A8, leaving the iPhone free for telephone calls! But it seems that when AirPlay doesn't appear on the iPhone, the A8 also doesn't appear as a speaker output option on the iMac.
I have had a lot of problems with this A8 and find online many users also dissatisfied: seems unpredictable and intermittent. Have had network dropouts also but that is okay since restarting modem, A8, iMac and iPhone all together. Have searched endlessly but can't find instructions on how to enable or troubleshoot AirPlay.

Thanks, degree, I should have mentioned I've checked that page. The only bit I'm not sure of is that the page on recommended settings for routers wants the 2.4GHz channel width set to 20MHz and the 5GHz channel set to both 20 and 40MHz, but my router seems to have only one option: "Bandwidth: 20Mhz" or Bandwidth: 40Mhz". Everything else seems to be compliant.
I moved the speakers/dock into the same room as the router and iMac, in the adjacent corner so shouldn't interfere.

  • Can't eject FW drives - says app is open, yet none are open

This is mildly disturbing:  After only 6 months of use, I just got a "Can't eject drives" and something about data being "used" or an app being open, yet *no* applications are open - everything was quit / closed before I chose to eject the drives.  Just like I've done for 10 years on Macs.
The warning prompt showed an option to "force eject" which I did not do, nor did I chose "try again".  I stopped trying to eject.  Then, even *more* disturbing, I clicked on one of the drives and it showed "0 items" on the drive.
I restarted and now the drives appear normal.
Just prior to this happening, I had an additional self-powered Glyph drive at the end of the daisy-chain.  Disturbingly #3:  while this drive was connected, I received a warning prompt that said "drive wasn't ejected properly" and it disappeared from my desktop.  I had done nothing to cause this, it simply happenend.  I'm guessing this issue is due to the self-powered factor - I probably should have had this closer in-line to the Mac FW800 bus.
Would this daisy-chain scenario cause the non-eject problem?
    Here is my setup:
FW800 out to older Glyph drive via FW400 connection, then daisy-chained to two *brand new* Glyph drives via FW800 connections.  ALL drives were formatted properly when I purchased them.
    OS 10.8.5
I remember this happening on 10.7, 10.6, 10.5 etc...  Hasn't Apple figured this out?
Is there a Disk Utility I should run to make sure all my drives are ok?

I don't think that's the case because the drive successfully ejects upon closure of the QT player. I'm not sure if it is the way they wrote file handling in general in Mountain Lion, or if it is a QT Player 7 issue, but it is definately annoying.
It seems that the Volume becomes locked when a file is opened. When that file is closed, the Volume remains locked until the application that opened the file is closed. This seems to work different than it used to.

  • Can't Eject Firewire drives

I've been using a collection of 500GB firewire G-Drives for pro-audio & time machine backups.
Up until now, they work great with my old 2006 MBP (OS 10.4) , and my late 2008 MBP (OS 10.5.6)
I just got a new 2009 MBP with Leopard 10.5.6 and whenever I mount the drives, I cannot eject them.
Its a mystery. No applications are open. Spotlight is not running. Everytime I try to eject a drive I get a message saying its in use.
My only remedy is to shut down the computer, and turn them off.
    Any ideas?

Means corrupted system files. You should reinstall OS X. You may try this:
How to Perform an Archive and Install
An Archive and Install will NOT erase your hard drive, but you must have sufficient free space for a second OS X installation which could be from 3-9 GBs depending upon the version of OS X and selected installation options. The free space requirement is over and above normal free space requirements which should be at least 6-10 GBs. Read all the linked references carefully before proceeding.
    1. Be sure to use Disk Utility first to repair the disk before performing the Archive and Install.
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
    2. Do not proceed with an Archive and Install if DU reports errors it cannot fix. In that case use Disk Warrior and/or TechTool Pro to repair the hard drive. If neither can repair the drive, then you will have to erase the drive and reinstall from scratch.
    3. Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When you reach the screen to select a destination drive click once on the destination drive then click on the Option button. Select the Archive and Install option. You have an option to preserve users and network preferences. Only select this option if you are sure you have no corrupted files in your user accounts. Otherwise leave this option unchecked. Click on the OK button and continue with the OS X Installation.
    4. Upon completion of the Archive and Install you will have a Previous System Folder in the root directory. You should retain the PSF until you are sure you do not need to manually transfer any items from the PSF to your newly installed system.
    5. After moving any items you want to keep from the PSF you should delete it. You can back it up if you prefer, but you must delete it from the hard drive.
    6. You can now download a Combo Updater directly from Apple's download site to update your new system to the desired version as well as install any security or other updates. You can also do this using Software Update.
