Cd-rom is very flaky

I just got a new 865PE-Neo2 FIS2R mobo two days ago, along with a new 3.0 GHz P4 w/ HT and new 2x256MB of 400MHz 2-3-3-5 dual channel OCZ RAM.  I went to install windows XP from my old (known to work) cdrw drive, and it was being very strange.  It essentially just gives me an error saying it failed to load and that setup failed, hit any key to continue.  It's a different file every time I try.  I've tried with multiple cdroms (CDRW and just normal CD), multiple versions of windows (XP, 2000, 98), and multiple IDE cables.  I've even tried changing which IDE channel I was using (switching between 1 and two).  I'm running a 120GB maxtor HDD, which I know works.  None of this is serialATA, just your normal IDE.  I got it to install once just by trying to install it over and over until it finally made it through, but I don't like the idea of depending on luck in the future.  Any ideas?  Defective board?
Another idea is that I'm running an LED fan along with 6 front LEDs and a light-up thermometer on the case, all with a 250W PSU.  Am I overloading it?
Specs:
P4 3GHz 800FSB w/HT
2x256MB 400MHz OCZ Dual Channel RAM running SPD
120GB ATA133 HDD
48x CDRW/32x CDROM, both standard IDE
865PE-Neo2 FIS2R mobo
250W Power supply
Windows XP Prof. (well, trying to)

The higher voltages cause more heat which will shorten the life of the memory. The manufacturer's publish a range. From various posts, it would seem that installing xp is more stressful than benchmarking. A number of people have only been able to install by using a single stick.
I would set it to 2.65 or 2.7 and if that doesn't work, try with 1 stick and then go to 2.8 if need be. After you get xp installed, plug the second stick back in for dual channel and then set voltage for the lowest of 2.65, 2.7 or 2.8 that gives you stability.
You may want to use this to test the memory - takes 10-12 minutes for 1 cycle.  Memtest86

  • AEBS 802.11n, TC and APXn with 7.3.1 is very flaky indeed - cant connect -

HI Guys I think many of you on these forums have posted because you are having joyless experiences with the new APX 802.11n, the AEBSn and the TC not able to be managed via the AIRPORT UTILITY.app v5.3.2 with firmware 7.3.1 in the former devices. After a search there's many of these posts with people with the same issues.
I have these devices in my place so I have had lost of experience configuring these over the years:
    1 x 802.11n AEBS, 1 x TC, 1 xUFO white AEBS, 2 x APXg's and lastly the problematic 1 x APX802.11n (one subnet and 2 x networks 2.4Ghz and 5 Ghz)
I am at my wits ends trying to get the new APXn regularly responding to the AP utility.app (error reading configuration).
I have tried most of the remedies on these forums but they do not consistently solve the problems of the APX not responding to the AP utility.None of these have consistently worked:
    • trying to factory reset it using the POWER ON+RESET and waiting for the amber flashes then green - butt this procedure NEVER WORKS to factory reset!
    • using the reset button in any form (it doesn't do anything)
    • connection through ethernet (sometimes works ).
    • takes long to power up (than the older 802.11g)
    • rest APXn back to factory defaults through the AP utility then ...
    • downloaded 7.3 firmware - worse and wont work
    • lastly I found that RESET+POWER ON then wait for 20 secs as as it powers up DEPRESS the RESET again and then it becomes readable.
Additionally, I have been unsuccessful in getting PORT FORWARDINg to work at all for the AEBS 802.11n with and without the TC in the mix. I had this working for several years with the White UFO AEBS ... It beats me.
I think the firmware is very very flaky and i have no resolutions for these recent problems.
    Hope for a fix soon.
I will be polling these forums for any clues.

    Hi Guys
REgarding the APXn's (802.11N Airport express) inability to consistently be seen by the Airport Utility.
this just worked finally for me now and have tested this 7 times and all seems ok now..
Simply: when APXN in list, save configs, reset to factordeafuts, downgrade to 7.3, upgrade to 7.3 and reinstate .configs.
UPdate: a probable work instruction that seems to consistently work.
Here is the work instruction i used.
    (1) turn off all other WIFI base stations where you are that you can. (important I believe)
    (2) turn off airport in your mac
    (3) connect troublesome APXN to mac via ETHERNET cable. Set DHCP on your mac or some address in IPV4
    (4) power off and on the APXn  (yes again )
    (5) whilst it is powering up, use a pen of toothpick to RESET the APXn again (i think this causes something to move around inside the magic-ware)
    (6) the light will flash amber (no network to connect to)
    (7) launch /utilities/airport utility.app
    (8) the one and only APXn appears in the list
(8.5) optional: (cross fingers and legs :))
    (9) when profile comes back, use FILE/SAVE a COPY AS to the ~/desktop to save the complete profiles and settings of what you have in there currently.
    (10) select the one and only APXn and perform a airport utility.app/base station/ RESET TO FACTORY DEFAULTS - and wait for 30 secs and then it will restart
    (11) when complete, quit and relaunch the /utilities/airport utility.app
    (12) the APXN will be as when you bought it (pristine and no stuff in it from you)
    (13) connect your mac back to internet via ethernet if possible. (avoid the wireless just to be sure but at this stage you could reinstate all your exiting wireless infrastructure)
    (14) select the one and only APXn AGAIN and perform a airport utility/base station/ UPLOAD FIRMWARE and select version 7.3 (back level) . THe firmware will load into APXn 0%-100% guage and then it will restart.
    (15) when complete, quit and relaunch the /utilities/airport utility.app and it will warn that one of the basestations (the only on the list - the APXN) has later FIRMWARE available for it. [This is 7.3.1].
    (16) reply OK to UPLOAD NEW 7.3.1 firmware. (yes yes I realise ths sounds silly but it works ok ) 7.3.1 Firmware will up load into the APXN as above and restart will take place.. so say 120 seconds.
    (17) quit and relaunch the /utilities/airport utility.app. THE APXN will appear as before as now with 7.3.1.
    (18) just to make sure, (we're not quite finished), remove the ETHERNET cable. If not already done form previous optional step, ENABLE the AIRPORT (WIFI) on your mac.
    (19) power OFF then power ON the APXn.. wait for the usual 70 secs..
    (20) Again, to be sure, QUIT and RESTART the /utilities/airport utility.app, the APX as factory default with amber icon will appear in the list [along wit the rest of your apple airport base stations).
    (21) Select it in the list fo MANUAL and the configuration will be read quickly.
    (22) do this (steps 18-21) 3 or 4 times to see that it is consistent. (I this it 7 before posting this).
    last step...
    • select the APXN (default settings) and IMPORT the save configuration file (~/desktop/nnn.baseconfig) (all it) from the ~/desktop. Ignore any errors (untick them), add a password for the base station and UPDATE!
    • wait for the usual 70 secs.
    • without quitting the /utilities/airport utility.app, the UPDATED APXN with your configuration will be in the list.
NOw try and selectit for manual and it should respond in time without timing out.
Test by powering off and removing from wall socket and moving around too to make sure you can SEE it in the /utilities/airport utility.app and select it for MANUAL CONFIGURATION.
After many days of frustration on weekend and over night, this appears to have worked ok for me.
(now to work out the AEBSn port forwarding issue - it wont work).

  • Very Flaky net speeds

    Hi guys,
For quite a while the "up to 20mb" we are supposed to have here seems to be much worse than when we first signed up with the older 10mb service. Recently its gotten so bad that in the evenings games and dowloading become impossible and browsing websites feels like on a 56k modem (but without the lovely noise it made!).
Furthermore, last night we also had a terrible phone line with crackling cutting out frequently. We have tried resets, moving the hub closer to the master socket, changing wireless frequencies, and making sure we have the correct I-plate (which we did). We are out of ideas at our end
A friend suggested I post here about the problem, so I was hoping any of the gurus could help me.

Next, I read up about the test socket and as reccomended, i connected my hub to it without any other extensions or other PCs. I waited an hour or so then ran the same tests as above (note, the hub did reset itself within that hour meaning it was 13 mins up before i actualy ran the test):

both results seem to have only marginal differences and the noise even increased in the test socket by a tiny amount!
Finally, I tried the quiet line on 17070. I was using a cordless phone (the one on the hub) and whilst i did not hear what people have described as a quiet humming sound, i did pick up faint muffled static, similar to that of TV white noise but very quiet. Its a difficult test because i am not exactly 100% sure what i am listening for ( ooh, i wonder if it is possible in the future for somebody to upload examples of a "normal" sound and a "noisy line" sound)
Finally, I  checked the service status again ( as i have been doing on a regular basis) and it appears that "Essential works and Upgrades" are being done in Staffordshire and west midlands. Since I am in Stafford, I  wonder if this has anything to do with it (or an attempt to fix a problem affecting more than just me), but I am not clear on what the nature of these works or Upgrades are. Last night at roughly midnight the hub did flick to a red light signalling that the connection was down. It was back by the morning.
Sorry for that record breakingly long post, but I hope this information helps out. As of now the hub still restarts every so often several times a day so its still flaky.

  • Mail on Lion with Exchange Server is very flaky

Ever since we update to Lion and the newest Exchange server, all of our emails in our department have been quite flaky while accessing them through the Mail program on Mac OS X. The two main problems are:
It stops receiving mail (but still sends). You have to quit Mail and restart to get it. (A main problem with this is that the user is unaware that it is not functioning.)
When files are deleted they reappear.
    Thoughts?

I am French and my English is not very good. I think the problem presented here is similar to my problems. After several searches, I realized that when two accounts are configured on Exchange Mail, the software created local folders in the address / Users/nameofuser/Library/Mail/V2 /
The files they create are the same for Exchange. I have similar addresses but with different domain names. The file he created is the same: [email protected] (xxxx = [email protected]).
In this case, the software is not able to create a file for the second account and this creates conflict.
It would be nice that Apple updates the software to allow Exchange to create accounts in this situation!

  • The internet coming from my AirPort Extreme, which is extended by an AirPort Express and my Time Capsule, is being very flaky. It is dropping and I have to reconnect every few minutes. Any solutions?

To be more detailed, my AirPort Extreme needs to be extended by an AirPort Express, which then is extended to my personal Time Capsule. The internet drops on my MacBook Pro and other MacBook Pros randomly. We then reconnect with no problem and go on with what we were doing. The internet is fine. Always able to connect. We have Open DNS set up as well. But the flaky internet is annoying. Any ideas how to fix this?

The primary issue that you will need to contend with is the distance between routers. 300' would be at the fringe of the signal coming from the base station located in the house which, most likely, make it too "weak" to extend/repeat with the second base station at the shop.
There is a method to configure a relay base station between them in a Wireless Distribution System (WDS), but a WDS has two major drawbacks: 1) It can only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode, and 2) For every base station participating in the WDS, the overall bandwidth will be cut in half .., so with a total of three (main, relay, & remote), the maximum of 54 Mbps (for 802.11g) would be more like 15-17 Mbps. If you plan on streaming HD video (either 720p or 1080p), your local wireless network may not have enough bandwidth to do so successfully.
You proposal to run the DSL line to the shop does offer another option. Instead of running a DSL line, run an Ethernet cable between the house and the shop. You would connect one end to any of the available LAN ports on the AirPort Extreme to the Ethernet port on the AirPort Express. You can then configure both base stations into a roaming network and not have bandwidth loss of the WDS.

  • Thunderbird/IMAP very flaky this morning

Problems saving sent emails, prompts for New Password, slow to connect to mail servers, messages that there might be a server problem...
Anyone else experiencing this in the last hour or so?

If you have a search around this forum you will see numerous (hundreds?) complaints about bt e-mail. This has been a disaster for BT and continues to be one. I just wish someone at BT would 'fess up and let us all knopw just what is going on. Mods????
And yes my e-mail is at sixes and sevens yet again - just like most other people.

  • Flaky TC Hard Drive Connection

    Hi,
I recently "upgraded" all my computers to Windows 7. Since then, my connection to the hard drive on my 500 Gb time capsule has been very flaky (the physical and internet connection are just fine however). By that, I mean I cannot transfer files for more than 30 seconds without a timeout error. Also, after about 30 mins the drive name turns from the name I called it (Name) to "Time Capsule (\\Name) (Z:)" FAT 32 and I cannot connect to it at all any further. A reboot solves this problem.
Originally, I couldn't connect to the TC at all under Windows 7, but changed my LAN Security Manager Authentication Level to LM/NTLM-NTLM2 if negotiated which seemed to "solve" that problem. I'm not sure if it's causing these new symptoms.
Are there any more settings I need to tweak to get the Time Capsule hard dive to work well with Windows 7?
    Thanks so much!

Hello marcpbcup. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Sorry, but this is a known issue and currently does not have a permanent solution. You will find a number of threads in both this forum and on other sites discussing this. It appears to be related to the Microsoft's implementation of the latest version of SMB (v2.0) with the Windows 7 / Windows Server 2008 OS releases.

  • Flaky Superdrive

My G5 Quad is sweet, but the superdrive with it often seems very flaky. When I put in a brand new Taiyo Yuden DVD-R (I'm told they're the best, and they're the only kind I ever use) it will often kick it out up to a dozen times before it accepts it and starts burning the disk (say, in iDVD or DVD Studio Pro 4). It seems like a mechanical problem -- like the disks kick up into the wrong spot and don't get spooled correctly right away. It seems to help to squeeze the drawer in ever-so-gently rather than just give it a simple push to close it. Is there an adjustment possible to the disk handling mechanism? Once it accepts the disk and starts burning, or when playing, it works just fine.

The Quads shipped with at least two different "Superdrives". Some have the Pioneer DVR-110D (mine did), and others have the LG-Hitachi model, which seems to be the "flakier" one.
Taiyo Yuden is a good brand of disc, so that likely isn't your problem.
I suppose you could talk to AppleCare to see if they'll replace the drive. It shouldn't be behaving this way.

  • T500 Problems and experiences with Lenovo's technical support / EZServ

After some issues and numerous calls to Lenovo's Technical Support, I just thought I would share my experiences here.
First off, I currently own a ThinkPad T500, which was designed to be a replacement for my older ASUS laptop.
While the ASUS laptop is still running okay, I have had a hard time trying to get the company to properly warranty the laptop. (they would make falsified claims that nothing is wrong with the laptop, so that they would not have to replace any parts - and when they do replace parts, they would simply create another problem and totally ignore the described problem.) The experiences were so stressful and disgusting such that I am sick of arguing with the company any further. My decision on the ThinkPad was based on that IBM/Lenovo is designed to serve business class customers and theoretically should have "business-class support". For this very reason, I have added the best warranty service they was offered to me at the time (3yr onsite + accidental). I am just guessing at that time I just wanted to get away from small companies and go to a company that would back their customers' laptops.
As soon as I got my hands on a T500, however, I have noticed that something is wrong with the card reader. Apparently the reader on the machine would not read SDHC cards (it does read SD cards, however.) This is a problem because I only use SDHC cards and the machine was not able to read any of them. As the card reader controller is manufactured by the same manufacturer (Ricoh) and my older ASUS laptop was able to read SDHC cards, I thought something odd was going on with my machine. This was also based on the evidence that other T500 owners were able to read SDHC just fine.
In addition to the card reader, I was also having troubles in which the machine would freeze whenever Nero Burning ROM (a CD/DVD authoring software) is used.
My first support call to Lenovo was not that pleasant, given that I was placed on hold for 20 minutes when the rep was looking up specs for SHDC compatibility. The rep also said that they would not troubleshoot 3rd party software and would not help me on the issue. I was also told that I should also call back during "regular business hours (apparently until 5pm EST, or 2pm PST (my time)" (despite that the technical support hotline is open 24/7) so that a supervisor can handle my case. This makes it very difficult for me to get to someone with any authority as I am usually busy throughout the day until late afternoons (~4pm PST -> 7pm EST).
Nevertheless, my second call to Lenovo was much more pleasant. The rep handled my case in a timely fashion and promptly provided replacement parts indicated by my problem. (Onsite motherboard replacement for the card reader, and a separate shipment for the DVD-RW drive). Turns out that the motherboard replacement did fix the SDHC issue, although the freezing problem was not caused by hardware failures, but rather a faulty driver that was corrected after Lenovo released an update months later on the Intel SATA controller drivers.
Five months later, after having to use a broadband WWAN card for my work, I also started to notice there is something wrong with the broadband WWAN card. The card used is the Ericsson F3507g card (or the AT&T broadband WWAN option). Not only would the connection be very flaky, it would also drop connections fairly frequently. It seems that a SIM card pull to another card would result in a perfect connection and ever since I have been using an addon card instead to use the Internet. When I confronted Lemovo with the problem, the experience was worse than the first one. I have made at least six service calls to Lenovo and everytime the reps will waste my time with basic troubleshooting which I told them repeatedly that I have already done (I have even reinstalled the OS but it seems that it does not matter to the reps). Here are some things that are repeated over and over:
    1) Can you uninstall the Power Manager Driver and the Wireless WAN drivers and reinstall them?
    2) Can you go on to our website and download the WWAN drivers (document ID: MIGR-70000 - I even remembered this number since it was repeated so many times) - and the Power Manager Driver and reinstall it?
    3) Can you go to Device Manager (the rep would go step by step to it even though I told him I already know how to get there), and see if there are any "bangs" (exclamation marks) on any of the devices?
    4) Since you were able to connect to the AT&T network, then from the hardware standpoint there is nothing wrong with your card. This indicates there is a software configuration or a driver problem. (I have been trying to acquire the latest drivers but what I have was already the latest)
    5) Since your card could connect to the network, you should contact your provider for help. (AT&T blames it on the card)
    6) I'm sorry but there is nothing I can do to help you. You should contact your provider about the card (despite that I acquired the card from Lenovo and not from them)
    7) Are you sure that your card is activated properly? It doesn't show in our systems that the card has been activated properly. You will need to call both AT&T and the Lenovo activation hotline (whatever this is) to have your card work properly. (I have never heard of this before)
Despite telling these reps I have an addon card that works perfectly and that I have done all the basic troubleshooting already, none of them are really willing to give me a replacement card. They would either request that I send my computer back to the depot (which I do not want to do since I use this laptop everyday and that's why I have onsite warranty), fail to help me, or transfer me to someone else that makes me do all the troubleshooting all over again. (Every call I made to Lenovo can be said to be composed of at least 20 minutes of basic troubleshootings with the end result of not being able to help)
After having the case escalated to a team leader, I was told that someone would give me a call within a few hours since their team leader is with another customer. Result? No callbacks. Not within a day, nor two.
Called Lenovo again, they apologized, but samething happened - supervisor on the line - promised another callback by a supervisor - but nothing, nada!
Called Lenovo a third time - was again told the same thing, but I am not falling for that anymore - the rep finally agreed to give me a replacement, as well as as to send out a technician that would fix the LCD cover that is starting to get loose on one side.
At that time, I was so frustrated and this reminds me of the pain I have went through with my old ASUS laptop and their grumpy customer service. It just seems to me that it has to be that difficult to have anything resolved or fixed. (What is especially frustrating is that the basic reps do not have any authority to make any decisions, 90% of the time I will need to be transferred to a supervisor of some sort before my case can be handled successfully - which is hard at times given that I only have until 2pm PST to call them)
Received replacement, but did not fix issue. I have noticed that the GPS (which was part of the WWAN card) also has problems getting adequate signals for a 3D Fix. I have once again called Lenovo, this time raising the concerns with the GPS and seeking for help. Along with the basic troubleshooting, here is what Lenovo has to say about the GPS issue which frustrates me even more:
    1) uh, G..P..S? what GPS? (most reps I call say this, shows me that they either don't know what a GPS is or know that there is a dedicated GPS builtin on the Ericsson module. Perhaps they don't even know that ThinkVantage GPS existed)
    2) You will need to have active service in order to use GPS (I do have active service, but nevertheless that statement is false since a 3D fix can be successfully acquired with a dummy card - I guess the rep has no idea what he/she was talking about)
    3) That's a software issue - you need to call AT&T and tell them about the problem (Again, I guess the rep has no idea that the GPS is not linked to AT&T's networks - there is a dedicated GPS on the card that allows the ThinkVantage GPS tool to acquire proper GPS signals) (Also, why would AT&T troubleshoot a tool that Lenovo made called ThinkVantage GPS? - I don't get it)
    4) You need to uninstall, and then reinstall the Power Manager driver and also the latest WWAN drivers. (I did that, did not work - I have told them I even reinstalled the OS from scratch)
    5) You need to go uninstall, and then reinstall the Wireless LAN drivers (although I am talking about wireless WAN, not LAN)
    6) There are two wireless adapters in your laptop? Are you sure about this?
    7) LAN, or WAN? What are you referring to? (I guess some reps are not aware what WWAN means)
After dealing with the numerous reps that have no idea what I was talking about, I have decided that I would just take the machine into depot, which would give me a chance to explain the other issues I have with the machine as well.
Here are some of the issues I am having with my T500 right now (please comment if you have the same issues or perhaps have a possible solution/workaround for it)
    1. The left side of the LCD cover has a pressure point, which causes the cover to dislodge from the rest of the panel slightly when pressure is applied from the back side of the cover. (Could be caused by closing the lid, for example) - IBM technician applied some adhesive to the inside, which helped it from dislodging, although the left side is still a little filmsy compared to the right.
    2. This error randomly pops up at infrequent intervals: "Display driver igfx stopped responding and has successfully recovered."
The latest GFX driver is installed and all updates have been installed. OS has been reinstalled but problems still occurs infrequently.
    3. This error also pops up at infrequent intervals: "Active protection is not functioning as system detected the abnormal sensor status. To diagnose the sensor device, run PC DOCTOR DOS - HDD Active Protection Test and if it still shows, contact Help and Service for repair." The only problem is, my laptop only came installed with PC Doctor 5 for Windows and when I run it"
I ran a sensor check in DOS using the diagnostic CD and the sensor checked out okay. This error seems to happen mostly after I changed a setting in the Active Protection System software. (ex. changing the suspend time, etc)
    4. By default, the internal microphone does not work. In order for the internal microphone to work, the Advanced multi-stream mode must be enabled in the SmartAudio control panel. If both redirection options are enabled, the internal microphones and the speakers would then work normally. However, the hotkey controls on the ThinkPad would not control the right device when headphones are plugged in (since headphones are classified as its own device when the Advanced stream mode is enabled) - Mute and volume controls thus only controls the internal speakers' volume, and have no control whatsoever when headphones are plugged in.
    5. The brightness on the T500 is rather dim. I am not sure if that's how the monitor is, but I can hardly see anything unless the display brightness is close to the max setting. I have the 1680x1050 matte screen.
    6. The WWAN card does not make a stable connection to the network and ThinkVantage GPS does not acquire a 3D Fix even when under direct sky for >20 minutes. What is interesting though is that if I turn off the monitor screen (Fn+F3) or close to lid, the WWAN connection will be very stable and GPS will function normally (acquire fix usually within 2-3 minutes). If the monitor/screen is turned back on after a GPS Fix is acquied, the signals will quickly deteriorate and the updates will either become delayed/inaccurate or a fix will be lost. The brighter the screen, the harder it is to get a fix or a stable connection. (At the max setting it is almost impossible to get a fix while at the lowest brightness a very weak fix can be acquired - this is the case even many sattelites have been detected) Perhaps something with power consumption? Or the LCD drawing too much power?
    7. Although it does not happen very frequently, pressing Fn+F3 to turn off the display might cause the LCD to flicker on and off non-stop.
    8. This used to happen more with the older version of the Lenovo Fingerprint Software - but sometimes the software tends to get stuck at the welcome screen after returning from sleep/suspend/standby mode. The screen will remain at Please Wait forever and a hard restart will be required to get back into Windows.
    9. At frequent intervals the sound from the internal speakers would stop working and only the headphones would work. The sound might, however, come back if I leave the headphones plugged in long enough and unplug them. Restarting the Windows Audio service will temporarily restore audio but the same issue tends to happen again soon after that. Driver issue? (I am not sure if it's relevant, but I tend to put my computer to sleep instead of shutting it down)
I have explained all of these issues on a piece of paper that I have included in my shipment to Flextronics. I have also included in big letters to make sure that they do not send the laptop to the address where they originally sent the "box" to. This is because I am only at that address a few days during the year and I don't plan to be there most days during the year.
On the first day, it seemed that the status changed from "Machine being repaired" to "Hold for customer information".
Apparently I missed a call from a number with an area code of 901 (which is Memphis, TN - I assume this is Lenovo's support center, since this is where the package was sent to). No messages were left on the voicemail. Called the number back, but was however told that I dialed the wrong number and no one has ever called me on this number (the lady on the phone was quite rude too) I then called the 800 EZServ number instead, turns out that they wanted one of my passwords which I gave them.
The evening after I saw that the machine was successfully repaired and that it is being shipped back to me. However, no tracking number was provided. (There still isn't a tracking number on the EZServ status page)
Hoping that my machine was repaired in good condition, I took a day off so I would be able to wait for UPS to deliver my laptop.
Such that I have something to work with, I called the EZServ # and see if they had a tracking number for my shipment. At the same time, I asked what components were replaced and/or what components were installed to the system. To my surprise, they reimaged the whole system and I was not even informed about this at all! (I do understand I checked the Yes box in the problem description page, but I felt that it was important that the repair center let their customers know before their data will be destroyed - luckily I imaged my laptop right before I shipped it out so I have a copy of my data) In addition, it also seemed that they did not read any of the pages I enclosed in the shipment since nothing about the WWAN card was ever mentioned, despite special emphasis placed on this when I called Lenovo to have my computer sent back. It seemed that the rep only recorded one of the problems I listed above, which was unsatisfactory.
The repair process was disappointing, as I have included in my problem description that I have previously tried reinstalling the whole OS from scratch and the problems did not go away. Reimaging the system will also probably have no effect on the problems I have described in the problem description.
What is more surprising to me though was that they totally skipped the notation I put on to have the notebook shipped to an alternate address relative to the box address. To make this impossible to miss, I miss drew a big * and circled it many times so that anyone would see it if they were reading the sheet. I found out shortly after checking on the UPS website that the city the package was being shipped to was that of the wrong address, and not the city of that of the alternate address. I was horrified after knowing that the package would not arrive today but yet I still took a day off work. (How disappointing?!)
Again and again, I called EZServ to see if I can have the package intercepted so it can be delivered to the right address. An intercept was placed on the package, although I received a call 30 minutes later from UPS saying that the intercept failed since the package has already been delivered. UPS also told me there is no way the people living there can simply return it and continue on with the intercept. Not happy with what I am hearing, I called EZServ and see if they can set up a pickup request to have the package delivered to my address. The first rep hanged up on me shortly she answered. The second rep called UPS, placed me on hold for more than 20 minutes, then hanged up on me. The third rep called UPS, and told me that they have esculated the case and that "UPS will handle everything", whatever that means. (she refused to disclose any more details). She told me that I would be receiving a call from her shortly on the details on the upcomings and promised that I would be receiving my laptop back. As with Lenovo, I didn't receive any callbacks. I called EZServ once more, and all they would say is tell me to wait. Sick and tired of waiting and calling and not getting anywhere, I drove 100 miles to where they shipped my laptop and picked it up there. I just don't know whether to trust the EZServ people anymore....
As far as the laptop goes, I didn't have time to open the box or to test it yet. But I will let you all know once I have taken a look at the results.
While the past experiences have been painful, I haven't lost all hope in Lenovo yet - although I really think that the customer service can really improve on certain levels.
Please give me advices on what to do next!
    Thanks for reading this!

  • Update clarisworks, please!

I am a graphic artist, disabled with ataxia now and depending on Clarisworks to replace my pen-on-paper work. It is the artist's delight - AND NO OTHER RECOMMENDED APP CAN TOUCH IT. Apple appears to have abandoned it, leaving it to go very flaky. Click on 'sise' when using Text in 'Draw' and watch total inaction until you go away and come back. Watch your big, intricae and time-consuming file, almost finished, crash. Withi unsaved material.
TRY DOING STUFF LIKE THIS WITH SOME BIG-NAME APPS!

    Paul:
Have you read Roger Wilmut's excellent article, Abandoning Appleworks?
    http://www.wilmut.webspace.virginmedia.com/notes/aw/page1.html
It is not clear to me how much his article will cover your Clarisworks situation.
Hopefully one of these alternative applications posted on this thread will work for you. Otherwise...
    From Wikipedia:
ClarisWorks 1.0 shipped for the Macintosh in 1991 and was subsequently ported to the Windows platform, shipping as ClarisWorks 1.0 for Windows in 1993.[citation needed] When the Claris company was disbanded and absorbed back into Apple, the product was renamed AppleWorks;[7] in fact, version 5 was released shortly before the product's return to Apple and was briefly called ClarisWorks 5.
So then it would appear that Clarisworks is a legacy Classic app and not a PowerPC app; hence Rosetta is not involved here.
It appears that it will not run on your Intel iMac with Snow Leopard (10.6.8) installed, so how are you accessing Clarisworks now?  What version is it?
Legacy Classic apps can run on Intel Macs using the SheepShaver emulator (or its cousin, Chubby Bunny).  Other than purchasing a used legacy Mac (and hoping it continues to work), this may be your only hope to continue with Clarisworks.
Here is a recent post I assembled for a similar question about running a Classic app:
With the newer Intel Macs, you have to run a Classic emulator such as SheepShaver, which requires you to extract the Mac ROMs from your older Classic Mac and then install Mac OS 9.
A related program is Chubby Bunny, which comes bundled with all of that included (google the term "Classic-On-Intel v 4.0.1 chubby bunny").

  • Email on iPhone 4 will not work on wi-fi

iPhone 4 will not use wi-fi for email and I live in a mobile black spot.
My iPad works ok over the same wi-fi network.
Browsing on the iPhone is ok on the same network.
The settings on iPhone and iPad are identical for sending and receiving mail.
If the wind is blowing in the right direction and I set my phone in a south facing window (as soon as I pick it up the signal goes) it works over the 3G but it is very flaky.
    Latest iOS loaded 4.3.3 (8J2)
    Anybody come across this?
Getting a little frustrated...as I mentioned my  iPad works fine. Is this an iPhone 'feature'?

Go to Settings App > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. If that doesn't work try Backing up and restoring the iPhone with iTunes on computer. If it still not working then you may be having a hardware issue ..you then will want to call apple and find out your warranty status

  • New BT Vision Box - Why no Freeview HD?

Why does the new BT vision box not support the DVB-T2 standard required for HD freeview? If BT is serious about competing with Sky and Virgin it needs to have 'live' HD services and better sports content.
I understand that the content issue is being addressed with the ofcom ruling on Sky’s pricing of its sports channels, but the hardware needs to be able to compete too.
I have read elsewhere on the net that the next generation box will support T2, but how long will we have to wait for that? The DVB-T2 standards have been around for a number of years and I think it is quite short sighted of BT to bring a 'new' box to market so close to a freeview HD launch without that capability. They should have waited a few months and included it from the start.
I bet they release a new one with DVB-T2 HD capability 2 weeks before the BBC/BT canvas box comes out and I would wager it won’t support the canvas platform!
I hope BT get this sorted soon, I would love to use my Vbox instead of my Sky box (the HD box is very flaky) but until these issues are sorted I can’t use it for anything else other than a 'bedroom box'
As a BT shareholder and lover of all things tech, these little things worry me. Please sort it BT
    Chris.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

That piece about the software upgrade is not correct... Bt have stated to me on many occasions that a new box is required as the hardware is incompatiable.. the HD you speak off (which confuses their call reps sometimes!) is for Streaming HD only via the internet. The Codec's are there I understand, but the physical chip is not the right one..
The Chipsets Must/are out there as Humax have them in their boxs!
My feelings are, you wont see a new box out of BT until Project Canvas comes to fruition at which point you will see a Freeview HD box from BT with Vision on Demand plus Content streaming over the Internet. At which point you will see a complete relaunch of BT Vision into a much more Internet Centred Product, prehaps offering a TV based Web Browser in addition to the BT Vision Library, Project Canvas Content/functionality etc.. You may start to see Linear Channels appearing via your ADSL service too at this point.. I would imagine this would happen "In time for Christmas 2010"..
You may see a "Projet Canvas capable *with sw upgrade*" HD or SD box appear before the world cup with heavy promotion , but nobody knows!
The only things you will probably see out of BT now will be more "Streamed/Downloadable" HD Content, and possibly Sky Sports as either a Linear or PPV Service.
Fingers crossed and a lot of patience required if you want Freeview HD via BT Vision.. I know Im waiting, Cant see the point of getting it now over Sky..

  • Confused about iTunes and home sharing

My family of 4 has been using iTunes for a number of years with our iPhones (4 iPhones) but this home sharing has me confused and maybe I have been doing things wrong. Right now we have four different PCs, iTunes is installed on each computer. Each computer has it's own library. Each iPhone is synced with a different PC with its own library. Each of us have our own iTunes account with a different email address (so 4 different accounts), the two kids have their own credit card associated with their own accounts (I do not want to pay for their purchases), my wife and I have the same credit card with our two different accounts.
So when I try to set up home sharing it wants me to put my wife's account into the home sharing on my machine and her machine so does that mean you can only share across one account? So she could not see items on my machine but I could access items on her machine? Does that mean the kids cannot share their purchases with both of us via home sharing? Perhaps my wife and I should start sharing the same iTunes account since the money comes from the same credit card.
In the future I may purchase a laptop in addition to my desktop. So I would install iTunes on it and it would start with a different library than my desktop (although I believe I could copy the desktop library to the laptop initially) Does the laptop need a different iTunes account or could it keep the same one that I have on my desktop? How do I easy keep the libraries in sync and can I sync my iPhone with either my desktop or laptop and not get the iPhone or me confused.
    Please help thanks

The iTunes/AppleTV/iOS comms system does seem to get easily confused at times even when it's worked peefectly for months.
I've never felt these services which detect each other automatically are particularly good at re-establishing lost connections without restarting one or several components and as you suggest may be linked to IP addresses changing and devices still looking for each other on old IP addresses which have changes.
Try restarting the Time Capsule - I had issues out of the blue last year, iTunes restart helped temporarily but the fix was a router power down and reboot (it had been on for months).
Recently since 5.3, one of my AppleTV 3's has been very flaky with wifi - drops Home Sharing while loading a film then instantly finds it again once the film has stopped - wifi strength listed as full strength - might be interference but ethernet has fixed it for now.
