Change default USB sound driver.

Due to my laptop crashing everytime I change my usb device, trial and error is taking me forever so I was hoping someone can guide me.
I can't work out how to change the default driver for my external card.
This is my alsa-base.conf
# lists the order of the sound cards
options snd slots=snd_ca0106,snd_hda_intel
options snd_ca0106 index=1
#-2 means that it will never be loaded as the primary card.
options snd_hda_intel index=0
This is my asound.conf
defaults.ctl.card 0
defaults.pcm.card 0
This is my modprobe.conf
options snd-hda-intel index=0
options snd-ca0106 index=1
(Is there more information needed?)
However, the driver that is loaded is snd_usb_audio, I remove it and load ca0106 manually and check lsmod to find that it's not being used by anything. How do I point my card in the right direction?
Or perhaps someone can point me in the right direction for getting this sorted, I know it's something easy.
Cheers!

Thanks for the reply, I'm quite clueless about this.
I'm trying to load the ca0106 driver for my external usb soundcard, a creative soundblaster live 5.1. The speakers were working fine with snd_usb_audio driver but the problem was that the headphone socket wasn't there (mapped in mixer).
After some searching I found out that the ca0106 is the correct driver for the hardware and after seeing this pastebin.com/8hkyJC14 on another post, I noticed there was a mixer setting for 'phones'. Score. I presume I would get all that functionality just by using the ca0106 driver?
I can't get my head around all these configuration files
asound.state - modules.conf - alsa-base.conf - .asoundrc
Here's what I've got so far, from my search and your advice:
I modified .asoundrc:
snd_hda_intel {
type hw
card 0
snd_ca0106 {
type hw
card 2
pcm.ca0106 {
type hw
card 2
ctl.ca0106 {
type hw
card 2
But I don't know what pcm or ctl do. Also, it was advised from somewhere else that I use the 'card' identifier as the name of my hardware, which I found to be 'External'. I decided against it, being aware that there is a lot of outdated information floating around. Wise?
My alsa-base.conf now looks like this:
# lists the order of the sound cards
options snd-ca0106 index=1 vid=041e pid=3040
options snd_hda_intel index=0
Is the vId and pid a good thing to have there? I can change my device to what I want in alsamixer so the order isn't important.
I cam across a little problem and I'm wondering...
in the file /proc/asound/modules
I have
0 snd_hda_intel
I wanted to add the snd_ca0106 but I can't write to the file as it's always in use. Is this another case of duplicate configuration files or is it necessary?
Do I have to set a conf file in modprobe to autoload the ca0106 driver?
I can't find any information on it because I'm probably being a moron not doing something obvious, I hope someone can point it out! So confused.
Cheers

  • Changing external USB hard drive into a FireWire Drive???

    I have been reading in some of the other discussions about how it is possible to change a USB external hard drive into a FireWire external hard drive. Is this true ??? I recently pruchased an external USB hard drive only to now find out that I cannot use it to boot from. Apparently OSX will only boot from a FireWire drive ??? Is there some way to change my current external USB hard drive into a FireWire compatible drive or do I have to purchase a FireWire drive ??? Thanks.

    All I can remember was an internal USB/firewire hub (for PCs, by the way), I haven't seen external adapters like cables; but you may simply ask in your local computer store about.
    Yes, you can boot only from firewire drives. I was told that it is possible the new Intel Macs are able to boot from USB drives, but haven't had the time to verify this so far.
    A possible solution may be to remove the harddisk from the USB enclosure and put it into a firewire case. This should work and you just need to buy the firewire case without the need for another harddisk. Just ensure that the case is able to take your harddrive (2.5" / 3.5" drives, connection interface).

  • Change Default Surround Sound Audio Mapping

    Anyone know if there is a way to change the default surround sound audio mapping in Premiere CS6?
    For example, when working with six mono channels being sent to a 5.1 submix. I manually set where each of the six go (front left, front right, center, lfe, rear left, rear right). Then I route that 5.1 submix to go to a stereo submix so that I can hear the downmixed audio in my laptop speakers. When my project is exported to a video file, I turn off the last step of routing the 5.1 submix to the stereo submix, so the file has all six channels of audio in their proper place. When I change the 5.1 submix to feed the master output, I get the option to re-select where each surround element should end up in the master output. In our production facility, we have surround in the order I mentioned previously. I noticed that Premiere has the front, then rears, and then center and lfe listed. It is annoying to have to re-select my surround preferences everytime I switch between monitoring the stereo downmix and the surround output.
    Any way to change what Premiere sees as the proper order for surround sound channels? I know there's the audio option to change mapping, but when working on a laptop, you only get the left and right speaker, no surround settings there.

    that's tied into our entire facility audio spec, and every video file we have would have to change audio mapping, in addition to re-wiring a lot of air-chain devices.
    In broadcasting, it seems like it's more common to do surround sound the way we're doing it: L, R, C, LFE, Ls, Rs. I understand why some might want to do it another way, which is why it would be nice to be able to change it and leave it a certain way. I know I can submit a feature request, I'm just trying to find out if anyone knows how to do it already.

  • How can I change default audio / sound output or remove the displayport audio option?

    I upgraded from Mavericks to Yosemite and while I don't have any of the number of issues that see to accompany that move, I've discovered a different one that is not necessarily related to it, but is irritating.
    2014 Macbook Pro Retina
    I use a thunderbolt to displayport (AKA just displayport) cable to attach a Dell monitor to my mac at the desk.
    Prior to this update, the mac ignored the display as far as audio was concerned (the Dell does NOT have audio built in).  But now it seems to think it does.
    Moreover, it continually switches back to that Sound output in the preferences whenever I plug or unplug an audio source from the audio jack.  This is Annoying!
    Is there any  way to either
    1) set the default to prefer the internal speakers / headphones instead of the DP?
    2) remove the Sound output for the DisplayPort connection (which is a false connection since the Dell doesn't actually have AUDIO)
    Thanks much

    I found the com.apple.audio.SystemSettings.plist and Com.apple.audio.DeviceSettings.plist, but can't make sense of either enough to feel confident in altering any entries there.  here's the SystemSettings one that seems like it might have something you could change, but...

  • How to change default alarm sound for events

    I remember initially when setting up ical, it gave an option to set a default sound for messages. I want to change the sound, but cannot find the option to do so. currently when creating a nerw event, the message with sound option shows up with the default sound (Basso) that I selected initially. And I have to change it manually every time a new event is created. Is there a way to change the default sound?

    Settings > Sounds > Calendar. Maybe it was inaudible because yoursound was not turned up.

  • Changing default from test drive

    I just got the 2004 Microsoft Word package and my test drive that came with the computer expired but whenever I try to open a downloaded file, say from an email, it attempts to open it with the test drive, saying it's the default. I have the option of using the actual program but it takes more time and is less convenient. How do I change the default so I can get rid of the test drive? Thanks so much.

    Hi barbara,
    you can right click the icon or control click / open with /and choose your choice of your actual application to open.
    or right click / get info / open with, and changed all if you want all to be opened with that default programs.
    Good Luck.

  • Change Default notification sound and email

    I'd like to change the default alert in Calendar sound and also have it send an email. Where is the pref to set this up in Calendar v.8?

    BBN,
    1. What do you have set in iCal>Preferences>General> Add a default alarm to all new events and invitations?
    2. I am not sure why the alarms are resetting, perhaps changing the default alarm preference may help.

  • Clear default usb flash drive selection on mac os x?

    Hey ,
    I'm using a VMWARE program and running Windows 7 on my macbook .
    The first time i connected my usb flashdrive , the windows system was running and i got a pop up asking me if i want to open the new drive using windows 7 or mac os X , i choose the Windows and checked the "always use this choice".
    Now i can only use my flash drive on the Mac OS.
    Any why to clear the default selection and use the flash drive with my Windows 7 system ?
    Thanks !

    You will be able to open it if you make it a .iso
    image. There is software available for both OSes to
    open and browse/modify a .iso image file. I do not
    know how well any of them use passwords for the
    images.
    Maybe it's winiso
    What I would recommend is using Winrar
    (http://www.rarlabs.com/) and just using a compresses
    and encrypted file that both OS's can manipulate.
    With winrar you create an archive and then each time you want to edit a file you have to extract it, modify it and then reinsert it in the archive.
    What I was looking for is something more user friendly.
    Images created with mac, protected with a password, are ok but are not compatible with windows.
    Viceversa, U3 is compatible with windows but not mac ...

  • Broken USB Sound

    Hi all,
    a speaker system with USB sound card worked seemlessly for long time. Suddenly it stopped working. The sound is now blurred (is this the right word).
    Is there any way to re-install the original USB sound driver?
    Any ideas are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,

    If it were me, I'd drop in on a cheap store with easy return policies, like Walmart, and buy a $20 usb microphone/headset. Just about any one should work with the Mini (I use a Logitech model sold for the Playstation on my Mini.)
    Then I'd plug it in and see if you get sound. If so, then a more sophisticated usb sound device will likely work fine, such as the iMic:
    http://www.griffintechnology.com/products/imic
    (And I'd return the cheapo headset to Wally-World.)
    Bottom line: I think you'll only be able to answer this question by trying it out yourself.

  • I've changed the icon of my USB Flash drive and on my Macbook Pro the icon doesn't show, in every other mac it does

    So i have changed the UBS Flash Drive icon of my USB memory stick, when i changed it it shows a default format image preview instead of the icon i chose, (on every other mac and macbook it appears correctly. When i plug the usb on my macbook the icon goes like this:
    When i plug it on other macs and macbook pros, it does this:
    so... on my computer it shows as a preview but in all others it shows correctly. (i have done it in every possible way, i've used programs to make the image, coping it on preview and then pasting it on Show info on the top left corner) My usb is in exFat Format.  do anybody knows why on my macbook pro this happens? thanks.

  • USB sound card crackling when changing nr of channels in ALSA

    Hello! I have read the alsa config and some related posts from brebs (https://bbs.archlinux.org/profile.php?id=10353) and I setup upmixing to 5.1 and dmix with a USB sound card. It works, but the sound is constantly crackling. I have simplified my .asoundrc to find out where did this problem came from and I got this:
    pcm.!default {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "dmix6"
    pcm.dmix6 {
    type asym
    playback.pcm {
    type dmix
    ipc_key 567829
    slave {
    pcm "hw:0,0"
    channels 6
    It strill crackles with this config but when I change the channels to 2 there is no crackling anymore. I messed with buffer_size and period_size but the problem persists. Using surround51 does not fix it either. Thank you!
    Edit: Forgot to mention my sound card, it's a Sweex SC016.

    I can't exactly tell if there are artifacts with that static sound but I think I the sound was clean. The output of lsusb -D /dev/bus/usb/004/002 has a line containing "bcd USB 1.10" and this is the output of "lsmod | grep '^snd' | column -t" (taken from the ALSA wiki):

  • How do I change default sound for alarm on iphone 5c?

    I don't like the default sound for my alarm on my iPhone 5c. How do I go change the default so I won't have to continually change it?

        I know it's important to customize your device naivebelle. I'm sorry to hear that you are not pleased with the alarm tone on your Razr M. If you have already checked the main volume settings, I have attached a link for notification sounds. http://vz.to/1jEbaq4 I'm sorry we don't have specific information on changing the alarm sound specifically. This is likely just a slight change within the new OS itself.

  • USB Sound Card by default

    Hi All,
    Since i've upgraded to snow leopard i've been having an issue with my USB Sound Card. It's a Behringer U-Control UCA-202 that's connected via a Belkin 4 port hub through my Dell 2407WFP monitor to my MBP. Everytime i restart Snow Leopard automatically defaults to the Built-In Soundcard instead of my USB Sound Card by default. It's not a major issue but it's annoying having to go into the sound preference or Audio MIDI to select it. I never had this issue on Leopard and i've tried connecting the USB sound card directly to the MBP but the same thing happens on restart.
    Many Thanks,
    MuraliM

    I'm now on 10.6.1 and I still have the same problem. I select "USB Sound Codec" in Sound preferences and when i restart (with everything still connected) my Mac still reverts to the built-in sound card in my MBP. In Leopard (and even Tiger) my Mac would select the last selected sound card by default on restart and if my USB sound card wasn't connected (i.e when I'm on the move) the Built-In Sound Card would be selected. Is there something I'm doing wrong or is it what I think it is, a problem with Snow Leopard and if it is how can I make Apple aware of this problem? Now that my printer and with this soundcard problem i'm considering just reformatting and restoring my Leopard install.
    Many thanks,
    Murali

  • How do you set a usb sound card as the default sound device for all programs?

    I'm running cmus for a music player and it works fine with the internal speakers on my macbook pro. I'm using a usb sound card for a set of 5.1 surround speakers and cmus won't send it's audio to the usb sound card. I've also tried several other programs for audio and it seems to be hit or miss with being able to use the usb sound card. I'm not sure if I'm overlooking the a setting or if there is a different audio output plugin for cmus that has the functionality I need. Cmus also won't play over any bluetooth audio device while some other sounds will.

    Yes I did and it does not appear there. Only the ringtones I have created myself and the default ones appear in the list.
    In settings>sounds>ringtone however they all appear
