Change MTU on Cat4006

Hi,
I have a Catalyst 4006 with a Sup2 engine, and a 6 port GigE card.
I need to change the default system MTU from 1500 to 1546 to resolve some MPLS over Ethernet issues i am having.
How do i do this?
On an IOS switch, i would use system mtu 1546, but how is this done in CatOS.
Thanks in advance
Darren

Catalyst 4000 Series
You can classify the Catalyst 4000 series switches into two groups in relation to jumbo or baby giant support:
Supervisor I (WS-X4012) and Supervisor 2 (WS-X4013)
Supervisor III (WS-X4014) and Supervisor IV (WS-X4515)
Supervisor I (WS-X4012) and Supervisor 2 (WS-X4013)
This group includes the WS-C2948G, WS-C2980G, and the WS-C4912G fixed-configuration switches also. Due to an ASIC limitation, there is no support for baby giants or jumbo.
Workaround
As a workaround, you can enable a port for trunking in order to support baby giants. When you enable a port for 802.1q trunking, the switch automatically assumes that an extra four bytes of data are appended on, and increment the frame size of the L2 packet. Note that ISL encapsulation is not supported on these platforms.
Hence, for implementations that require exactly one tag to be carried (either 802.1q or MPLS, but not both), you can configure the port as a trunk port to force the switchport to accept an extra four bytes of data. If the port were to carry multiple VLANs for VLAN-ID tagging or 802.1p prioritization, configure the port as a 802.1q trunk. However, even if VLAN tagging is not necessary, but you want the increased four-byte support, you can configure the port as a 802.1q trunk. Change the Native VLAN to be the one desired to carry the traffic. When you do so, you can accommodate an extra four bytes of data.
No jumbo frame support on any Cat4000 based switch (which includes the 400x, switches) due to the limitation of the Cat4000 asic.
regarding the workaround above Up to a max 1522 bytes is supported on ports enabled for .1q. Anything above that will fail.

  • Mid 2010 Macbook Pro - Change MTU size kills internet (Jumbo Frames)

Hi everyone, i'm hoping someone here can enlighten or help me solve my problem I'm having.
I am trying to change my MTU size to enable Jumbo frames on my 13 inch Mid 2010 Macbook Pro. I recently bought a ReadyNAS Ultra and would like to speed up transfers to the unit.
    My setup is as follows:
I have my ReadyNAS Ultra 2 and 2010 Macbook Pro (Core 2 Duo) wired via cat6 ethernet to my 5th Generation Apple Airport Extreme. The Airport Extreme is connected via cat5e to my AT&T Uverse Gateway which is set up to allow my Airport to assign DHCP and NAT (gateway is in bridge mode with wireless off).
Anyways, I have enabled Jumbo frames on my ReadyNAS, when I enable them on my MBP.. it applies fine. It disconnects / reconnects the ethernet like it should, but then my connection drops. I can't see any devices on my LAN and I cannot access any internet websites, but according to the network pane I am still assigned a valid dhcp address. When I manually try to increase my MTU size, the same thing happens (from 9000 to 1600 I tried every size).....
Could it be my MBP just can't suppose the increase of MTU size? It leaves them at 1500 when I set it to automatic... if it doesn't support the increased MTU size, why would it let me custom change the MTU and even give an option to select "Jumbo Frames (9000)"?
I appreciate any help in advance!!

If you did read my post then you would have saw that the option is there, but that is not entirely what my inquiry is about. The option isn't working as intended, and I was wondering if anyone had the same issues as me. Thanks anyways.
    Anyone else?
The way you responded to someone trying to help you probably means others will be hesitant to try.

  • QoS System Class change MTU from 9000 to 9126..?

    Hi,
I want to change the UCS "QoS system Class" MTU for the "Best Effort" class' MTU from 9000 bytes to 9126 as per:
    http://www.cknetworx.net/?tag=ucs-jumbo-frames
         and/or
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/unified_computing/ucs/UCS_CVDs/esxi51_ucsm2_Clusterdeploy.html
Making the change is simple enough, however in planning for the change I was hoping to get some sort of idea as to any potential impact the the network.
    - My expectation is that there will be none as I need to upgrade the "QoS system Class" MTU to 9126 to allow me to then upgrade the MTU to specific vNICs (Templates) that I can then schedule and perform in a controlled manner etc.
    Any questions, comments are appreciated.
    Appreciated, Chris.

    Hi,
please can someone tell me how to change the MTU of a fast reroute tunnel interface ?

You should be able to change the MTU on the interface tunnel itself. Using the "ip MTU xxx" command.

    Any idea guys. Thanks lot

I had this same exact problem on the cat 6500 running SXF10. Where I enabled MPLS and it caused CPU to spike. So to check what is getting forwarded to the MSFC perform the following to see a packet capture of what is hitting the CPU. So you need to run a SNIFFER capture.
Note this is only for the 6500 platform... once you check what's hitting the CPU (eg: fragmentation, icmp type 3 code 4's, etc al)...
Here are the instructions to setup inband span (which monitors traffic sent
    to the MSFC):
Router#monitor session 1 source interface fa 3/3 !--- Use any interface that
    is administratively shut down.
Router#monitor session 1 destination interface fa 3/2 !-- connected to sniffer port
Now, go to the SP console. Here is an example:
    Router#remote login switch
Router-sp#test monitor add 1 rp-inband rx <--- check the syntax as it varies
from one IOS to the next so use ?
    Verify monitor session:
    Router-sp#test monitor show session 1
    Ingress Source Ports: 3/3 15/1
    Egress Source Ports: 3/3
    Ingress Source Vlans:
    Egress Source Vlans:
    Filter Vlans:
    Destination Ports: 3/2
Go back to the RP and verify the monitor session as well:
    Router#show monitor
    Session 1
    Type : Local Session
    Source Ports :
    Both : Fa3/3
    Destination Ports : Fa3/2
    SP console:
    Router-sp#test monitor session 1 show
    Ingress Source Ports: 3/3 15/1
    Egress Source Ports: 3/3
    Ingress Source Vlans:
    Egress Source Vlans:
    Filter Vlans:
    Destination Ports: 3/2
To remove the inband span from sp do test monitor session 1 del and from the rp do no mon sess all
    ===============================
So my exact issue was two parts, CPU spike up 99% when WCCP was enabled with MPLS tag switching at the same time. Rebooting didnt help... I ended up changing from SXF10 to SXF14 IOS just in case but I still had high CPU after upgrade. But the major difference was when I removed the ACL tied to WCCP and removing the ACL completely and re-pasting into the configs for WAAS and then reapplying. But in my sniffer capture I did notice a lot of ip fragmentation hitting the MSFC processor. Now my MTU is 1522 and works fine.

  • Changing MTU in 5800 Xpress Music

Is there any way to change the Maximum Transfer Unit (MTU) on a 5800 Xpress Music phone? My Broadband provider (TalkTalk) requires an MTU of 1432 and from searching the net I believe the 5800 has a default value of 1500.
This is causing my phone to have problems when browsing the internet with some site not loading at all.
Ordinarily this could be changed on the router, but unfortunately my Dynamode R-ADSL-C4-W-G1 does not allow this setting to be changed and on my computer I had to edit the registry value.
The 5800 has the most recent 51.0.006.235.10 firmware.
Thanks in advance for any advice.

What version of Firmware ? Check for any updates thru' the OVI Suite..
If that doesn't solve the issue, you may try the Soft Reset by dialing    *#7370#     followed by 12345 (Default security code) when prompted. If you have set your own code, enter that instead... Note that the Soft Reset will erase all data from the phone, so back-up your data before doing that...

  • Changing MTU for local-zone

I'm getting ready to go to gigabit jumbo frame (MTU 9000) network, but I'm not there yet.
I have some nice Intel NICs, and I set them so they can do a MTU 16128 but fix the MTU at 1500 until I make the change.
But the local-zones interface won't change with the global:
    e1000g1: flags=1001000803<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,IPv4,FIXEDMTU> mtu 1500 index 3
    inet 0.0.0.0 netmask ff000000 broadcast 0.255.255.255
    ether 0:e:c:c4:48:a8
    e1000g1:1: flags=1000803<UP,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,IPv4> mtu 16128 index 3
    zone test-zone
    inet 10.0.0.191 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.0.0.255
I would like the local-zone's virtual interface to have a MTU of 1500 just like it's proud parent.
I've tried a /etc/hostname.e1000g1:1 with 'mtu 1500'. That creates a virtual interface with the proper MTU, but the zone's interface becomes e1000g1:2 still with a MTU of 16128.
How can I set the MTU of the local-zone?
    Thanks.

Its now a few months since i last played with networking in zones, but i don't think you can do that. IIRC there are only a limited set of options which can be set to a shared interface which belongs to a zone.
I think that in order for this to work you would have to dedicate an interface to the zone (i.e. 'exclusive mode'), then you can probably change the MTU from inside the zone.
However this is my guess, i haven't tested or verified it..

  • Permanently Change MTU in Airport - no running scripts all the time?

I was hoping some amazing Mac guru of networking could help me permanently fix my MTU on my Airport extreme - it seems to love a packet size of 1100, anything else in combination with this new Netgear wireless N router and I get HUGE latency. I play World of Warcraft and need to have a solid connection, and don't want to have to type sudo ifconfig en1 1100 into the terminal every time i wake up my computer. i've read some of the other threads and even hacked the library to change the MTU setting on startup, but i don't want to have to restart my computer every time either.... any suggestions on a permanent MTU change? thanks!
alternately, does anyone know of another wireless N adapter besides the Extreme (which is just G) that will work with a mac? i am thinking maybe a new adapter will let me permamnently change its MTU settings or just work best automatically with my netgear router.

Ryan, please don't misunderstand, but there are several people that are all hep't up on the development of the 802.11n technology.
To date, this technology is still in the development stages and has not been implemented. So it is really a waste of time and money until this technology is implemented. The last vote that was taken only produced 47% of the 75% required to implement. So the best you can get to date is 802.11g.
It is sad that many users here about the new developmet and then the manufacture's way in and start working on there product, but until the technology is implemented these routers do absolutely nothing, to increase your signal speed.

  • How to change MTU?

hey all. how i can change the MTU permanantly?

ok, that didnt work. it didnt kill my net this time, but ifconfig says MTU is still at 1500. there is also an error line at bootup. it goes by so fast (arch boots soo FAST i luv it!) that i cant read it all. but i did catch that its refering to the echo line in /etc/rc.local.
heres how i have it entered in rc.local

  • Changing MTU in Airport Extreme

I would like to change the MTU in my airport extreme as I cannot see web pages etc. Unfortunately this cannot be done through the GUI of airport extreme. Is there any thought of this being an option in the next firmware update of airport extreme? Is there any utility today that can help do this as If I cannot do this I will be forced to buy another wireless router so I can get internet.
    Thanks

Maybe this is a dumb question but here goes... I understand why somebody would want to change the MTU on a router but when you say you cannot get internet because it cannot be changed I lose you.
    Could you provide more detail?

  • Change MTU for just one Site-to-Site VPN between ASAs?

            Hi -
I'm setting up a Site-to-Site Cisco VPN between ASAs. I'm being told by the remote site engineer to set the maximum MTU at 1362.
Is it possible to set the MTU for one specific site-to-site VPN on my ASA 5510 Security Plus to MTU 1362? I see my interfeces are all set at 1500.
If not, would you recommend I setup a subinterface on my inside network router and a subinterface on the ASA with an MTU of 1362 to get around this issue? Then use this subinterface for traffic from my inside network to transverse through prior to hitting the VPN.
    Thank you.

I would not worry too much about UDP traffics.  I rather concentrate on TCP traffics because almost all of the issues will be TCP.
Therefore, I would set the MSS value to 1362 or may be like 1300:   sysopt connection tcp-mss 1300
That will solve most of  your issues.

    Hello
    I made a Link Aggregation on a T2000 with e1000g1 & e1000g2 successfully.
Now i want to raise up the mtu size to mtu 9000 for the aggregation.
    I tried /etc/hostname.aggr
    mtu 9000
    unsuccessfully- MTU size still 1500
    /kernel/drv/etc/e1000g.conf
    setting Max Fram Size for 1 2 3 interface to 2(upto 8k)
    also not successfully
    MaxFrameSize=0,2,2,2;
    # 0 is for normal ethernet frames.
    # 1 is for upto 4k size frames.
    # 2 is for upto 8k size frames.
    # 3 is for upto 16k size frames.
    # These are maximum frame limits, not the actual ethernet frame
    # size. Your actual ethernet frame size would be determined by
    # protocol stack configuration (please refer to ndd command man pages)
    # For Jumbo Frame Support (9k ethernet packet)
    # use 3 (upto 16k size frames)
    Has someone an idea?

    Hi gunnar jensen,
We can change the MTU from the command line.
Open the command Prompt window and follow the steps below to change the MTU size:
Type “netsh interface ipv4 show subinterface”.
    Press Enter.
You will see a list of network interfaces.
    Type “netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface `Local Area Connection` mtu=1472 store=persistent”.
You should replace Local Area Connection with the name that appeared in the “Interface” column from steps 1-3.
    Press Enter.
Type “netsh interface ipv4 show subinterface” to check the result.

  • Infiniband Mellanox MTU size change

    Hello to all.
I am new to Solaris and know nothing about its administration tools.
We are willing to test Infiniband and need to change MTU of the adapter (Mellanox) to 4K (which is the default configu for our subnet manager).
Which command should be used to archieve the task ?
Next we need to configure an SRP target. Any specific howto ?
Thanks in advance for your kind reply

Thank you for your reply, Darren.
As per my test, ifconfig will work for the IPoIB (when creating a derivative interface to run IP over infiniband).
Actually the driver is installed, link comes up, fabric negotiates 2048 MTU and no interface is available to configure for IPoIB since I did not create it.
Ifconfig lists only the gigabit eth nic, since no ib0 card is defined (only ib device in /proc).
I am not going to run IP over Infiniband, al least not for storage access, since poses a huge penalty in performance.
To configure the device MTU (not the virtual ethernet over infiniband MTU) I think must be done at driver level, using something related to the low level adapter

I guess it wil be cfgadm, but do not know syntax and parameters.
In vmware, using Mellanox tools, you issue esxcfg-module -s "port_type_default=1 set_4k_mtu=1" mlx4_en, where mlx4_en is the kernel module.
How to achieve this with Solaris ?
As per the SRP question, if Solaris supports COMSTAR it should support SRP target mode, right ?
    Thank for sharing your thoughts.
