Changing Boot Order on Dual Boot Windows 8 and Ubuntu

Hi there,
Recently got a HP Pavilion g6 2213sa which came with Windows 8 (spit!) and this disgusting UEFI BIOS replacement (double spit!).
Anyway, I need to dual boot Ubuntu on my system, so I installed Ubuntu. Normally, on a non UEFI system, a "Grub" bootloader installed by Linux would take over the startup process, and allow you to choose between either Windows 8 or Ubuntu on startup.
However, on this computer, startup is just booting straight to Windows 8 despite the fact that Ubuntu and Grub IS installed.
Now, upon startup, if I press F9, then I get to change the boot-device on a one-time basis. I can either select "OS Boot Manager", which loads Windows 8, or "Ubuntu" which loads the Grub bootloader which allows me to select Windows 8 or Ubuntu.
However, when I press F10 to enter the Bios Setup with the intention of changing the boot order permanently, the Ubuntu option isn't there. Instead it has OS Manager, USB Disk, CD Rom, USB CD Rom and Network Card.
Thanks, HP for, the crappily designed BIOS.
Anyway, can anyone PLEASE provide me a way of changing the boot order so that GRUB is loaded first and NOT this crap Windows 8 rubbish (that I would happily bin if I didn't need it for work).

There is the same problem in HP 2000 laptops (in my case specifically, HP 2000-2D22DX). I did some investigation using trial and error, and this is what I found out:
There is some sort of a "recovery feature" or so that on every boot sets the very first UEFI load option to point to one of the two locations, in this order:
\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi
\EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi
This option is displayed as "OS boot Manager" (for the first path) and something akin to "UEFI partition" for the second path, completely ignoring the actual name given to it (when you look at the EFI variables through efibootmgr, you can see that what is displayed as "OS boot Manager" actually is set to the name "Windows Boot Manager"; why anyone would do such renaming is beyond me). If you try to change the boot order so that this slot isn't the first, the UEFI will overwrite the BootOrder variable on next boot and reset it to point to "OS boot Manager" anyway.
By default, both of the paths above contain the same Microsoft bootloader (if you check the md5sum of both, you'll see they match).
So, until HP releases an updated UEFI that allows turning this "feature" off or rearranging boot options through the F10 UEFI setup, this is what you can do to get dual boot with the least amount of hackiness:
In Windows, mount the UEFI partition (mountvol S: /S mounts it as the S: drive) and copy the file \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi to use some other name (for example, I copied it to "\EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~", but you can change the name to anything else).
In the Windows command prompt, update the Windows UEFI entry to point to the new name: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi~ (adapt to your set name accordingly).
Optionally, change the name of the Windows boot loader so that you would be certain that it points to the new file location: bcdedit /set {bootmgr} description "Fixed Windows path"
Install the other OS. In my case the bootloader was installed into \EFI\opensuse\grubx64.efi.
Delete the two files, \EFI\Microsoft\Boot\bootmgfw.efi and \EFI\Boot\bootx64.efi.
Use efibootmgr to delete the "OS boot Manager" entry: sudo efibootmgr -b 0000 -B
Set the new OS bootloader to be the default bootloader by using efibootmgr with the -o option. In my case, I had an entry called "opensuse" in slot Boot0001 and the updated path Windows entry in slot Boot0002, so I had to do sudo efibootmgr -o 0001,0002
Update GRUB to point the Windows entry to your renamed file (you'll have to create a new file in /etc/grub.d and rerun grub-mkconfig).
And that's it, now the UEFI will boot GRUB by default (it won't regenerate the "OS boot Manager" entry since it won't be able to find either of the two hardcoded paths and will "fall back" to properly reading the BootOrder variable), and the F9 menu will still allow choosing to boot Windows directly.

I cannot change song order on playlists (old or new) with highlight and drag. I have turned off shuffle and highlighted the far left column (up/down arrow) of playlist. My mac pro is running 10.5.8  and am using itunes 10.4. I can't drag and drop "music" to "playlist" but can right click and get the option to "add to playlist." No such option for moving song within playlist, only the up and down arrow which moves song from top to bottom list, so if it is #4 from top it will move to #4 from bottom. Stupid I know. I spent over an hour with Apple support, reinstalled itunes, restarted and rebooted computer. Networked with my laptop which is running 10.6.8 and itunes 10.4 and it can drag and drop. The final Apple support solution was to reinstall my operating system. I would prefer not to. Any other ideas?

After looking at other people's posts, I think it's official: there is a bug. Itunes support said I should not have lost the drag/drop tool and I haven't on the laptop that is running itunes 10.4 and operating system 10.6.8. I chatted with someboby who lost both his drag/drop and side scroll and what we have in common is a wacom tablet for a mouse. My laptop is a wireless mouse. I reinstalled whatever updated driver that wacom has out there, shut the system down for night, hoping for magic, but alas none to be had. So if I want to change song order, I network the laptop and desktop, share the screen on the laptop, drag and drop to my heart's content and curse Apple for making me work this hard to find the tool that was once at my fingertips. Apple also let me know that if I want to share songs in household that the hundreds on songs that were purchased for .99 need to be repurchased for another .30. Maybe Apple is holding my drag/drop tool captive til I pay up the money or Maybe the next update will fix the problem, I for one give up for now.

  • Windows steals boot flag in dual boot

I have installed windows on sda1, boot on sda2, mostly replicating what is suggested in the windows dual boot article.  On arch setup, I flag 2 as bootable and 1 as not bootable.  However, when windows runs, it flags sda1 as bootable and the next time I restart, I go immediately into windows.  Is there a way to stop windows from doing this outside of windows OS?

Like jowilkin said, the bootable flag does not matter as long as Windows can boot its ok to leave it as it is.
When you are dual booting with Windows, its easier to have grub installed to the MBR so that it overwrites Windows' bootloader. Grub can boot to just about anything.

  • When restart in Lion to Boot Camp am offered: Mac, Windows, and Recovery Disk. Recovery Disk is new. What is it and how does it work?

Uaing Lion. When restart with Boot Camp, am now offered 3 options: Mac, windows, and (new) RECOVERY disk choices. Where did Recovery come from and for what?? Thanks for comments.

  • A VERY wierd booting problem: no dual boot nor boot from ide

in reading the title, you're probably thinking that i haven't even booted successfully at all. in fact, my setup is a raptor 74GB (sata), seagate ide 200GB, and a seagate sata 400GB, and a western digital ide 80GB, with the raptor being the primary drive to boot from in the bios. in a normal boot state, my computer boots from the raptor and with absolutely no problems. the problem i'm having is twofold and i think they are related: firstly, if i load the setup for windows xp on the the 80GB (it's for a customer of mine), i set in the bios that it should load from the 80GB before the raptor and then i restart. before any boot happens it says that the boot failed and then attempts to run a few other boot agents, a couple by nvidia and one by intel (swear to god there intel in there, i dont know what it is doing on a amd board). i dont have the exact error written down but i fail to load from the ide. also, i have wanted to run a dual boot windows xp/fedora core 3 x86_64 from 2 different partitions on my raptor. fedora installs fine and when it comes time for a boot loader to ask me whether i want windows xp or fedora, the screen never shows and windows loads. i did install fedora after windows so the issue shouldnt be there. i am not technically disinclined, very much the opposite however it bugs me that i can't do any of this. my bios is the latest 1.40, my motherboard is the k8n neo2 platinum, proc 3500+, ocz plat rev.2, if any of this information is at all relavent.

Changing the boot order in the bios dosn't create a boot sector. All it does is define the order the motherboard will look for boot sectors.
When ever youi install an OS it will create or modify a boot sector. You need to be aware of which disk it is modifying at the time.
When installing for dual booting you have to know if the second OS can recognise the boot sector created by the previous OS. Some do not and delete the previous and create a new one just for that OS.
I knew all that already, what i meant by changing the boot order was to allow the 80GB to be booted before the raptor, but if there's a dual boot on the raptor, clearly the bios wouldn't be able to detect that until it was time to boot. what I want to know is why when a boot sector is made for a dual boot or a boot sector is made for an ide hard drive, it doesnt go to the sata boot sector and in the case of the ide, it fails to boot completely.

  • Messed up boot loader while dual booting

    Hey guys,
I have a y410p with windows 8 on it. I recently installed a debian based linux alongside windows so I can dual boot them.
This required me to also add Grub to the the disk. But grub was in legacy mode and i had problems booting up win8. So, I used boot-repair to try to fix it, but it seems to have gotten worse.
Everything is messed up at this point, the mbr, uefi, grub, everything.
Are there any tools I can use to fix this?
    Any advice?

Any advice? You can try the OKR recovery button and see if you can restore the unit to factory condition. That is power down the unit. Press the Novo button and select System recovery from the presented menu. The select restore to initial condition.

  • Boot loop after dual booting ubuntu 14.04 LTS

I had an original version of windows 8 which worked properly. But after i dual booting with ubuntu windows takes about 10 to 15 mins to start and sometimes it gets stuck at the boot logo with nowhere to go
even ubuntu also shows there is a system problem.
    Please help..

Anything plugged into the ports like an external hard drive?  What AV program are you using?  How about opening task manager and look at the processes once it boots up and see if anything looks strange in there, like a process running heavy.
    Sorry for the late reply.

  • T420 [4236] video drivers lost after booting Win 7 [dual boot]

Never saw this before. Dual boot Win 7 and XP. Neither can see each other so no cross contamination.
Video - NVidia NVS 4200M is what shows under display adapters.
    Reboot XP, no issue.
Boot Win 7, then return to XP, video shows as [returns to] standard vga drivers and have no dual monitor function. If I try to reinstall drivers and point to them, it is not accepted. Only thing that works is to run the original driver download exe [NVidio Optimus - 83de45ww.exe] to uncompress files and then automatically run driver install. If I try to run previously uncompressed files, it does not work. This is the strangest thing I have seen in a long time.
Is this possibly a AHCI thing as I just got this booting in AHCI? Do not remember this happening in compatibility mode but it is possible that it was as I am just setting up this machine.

Do you have auto-detect switchable graphics enabled in BIOS?

  • Printing from MacBook Pro 17" Mid 2010 running 10.8.2 ... persistent inability for Apple MacBook Pro to print to a variety of HP printers (have run Windows and Ubuntu on Parallels and same printers work) ... what is going on with Apple printer support?

What is wrong with Apple's support of printers ... inability for MacBook Pros to connect with HP and other printers. Yet the same printers
work under Mac OS based Parallels (running Windows or Ubuntu) - WHY?  Finger pointing (HP . Apple ... Apple > HP) ... who cares ... FIX IT ... this has gone on for months now. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM?

HP discontinued support (read: stopped updating their OS X printer drivers) for a lot of their printers back when Apple released Snow Leopard and dropped even more when Lion was released.  This is an HP problem, not an Apple problem.
Exacty what  printers are you having problems with?
If any of your printers are on the HPIJS list, try installing the HPIJS drivers (there are 3 files to install, and it won't hurt anything).   This solved the issue for me on Snow Leopard, Lion and Mt. Lion with my older HP printers.

  • 4GB Flash Drive not loading on Mac (but on Windows and Ubuntu)

    Hello,
I have a 4GB flash drive (probably from LG) that I bought about 3 years ago. It was working just fine all this time but now, all of a sudden, it's gone. Not working, showing up neither in Finder nor in Disk Utility. But it works just fine on Windows 7 and Ubuntu. Files are even readable there. I tried re-formatting it on Ubuntu in FAT-32 but it still won't show up on a Mac.
Any other flash drive is showing up on my computer (tested with 2 different ones).
    Any clue?

I don't claim to know the solution to your problem, but in your situation I would try either or both administrator install methods: 1) Right-click the downloaded install file, choose "Run as Administrator" and install the software as usual. 2) Try using a different Windows account that you are positively certain has full administrator rights or the actual Administrator login name, install with that account.
Also, make sure you empty the browser cache before retrying the http pages. What about other browser settings, like security or privacy settings? Any add-ons or antivirus browser helper objects?
Do you only use Internet Explorer, or is this issue the same in Firefox, Opera, Chrome and Safari?
Good luck, hope you get the error fixed.

    Mrpeter1985,
Hmm.. I'm not sure that's how I'd interpret the warranty statement in the EULA.
I don't think it means that your license is void if you get a virus, but rather that the warranty of the performance of the software might be void.  I would also postulate that it's not a permanent void.  Reloading should be fine.
My interpretation is that MS is reasonably saying that if the OS malfunctions because it is infected by a virus that they aren't responsible to fix the code.  I.e. if you escalate a bug as a normal course of action, they would support it under the terms of the warranty, but if the bug were the result of virus corruption, then they aren't on the hook.
In any event - interesting discussion, but in practice... clean the virus or reload, right?
Plenty of good reasons to like Windows or to like Linux.
Different strokes for different folks, right?
