Changing Java startup parameters

Hello all
I am trying to modify a startup parameter from its default value:
-DrootDir=c://GDS//Configurations//
I am doing this using the Config tool. I save the change and then I restart the cluster.
When I check the developer trace of the server from the MMC I see that there is no change in the startup parameters. Of course the same is true within my Java code - System.getProperty(rootDir) still has the default value.
When I restart the Config Tool and view the startup parameters they are as I edited them previously, ie. they are the new values.
What do I have to do to make the change stay in place?

Changing default Java launch parameters

Hi,
I experienced the "unsufficient memory" error several times and found the -X java launch parameters.
The default settings are :
-Xms 1048576 bytes
-Xmx 67108864 bytes
and the minimum size to launch java is 262144 bytes
I tried to change these parameters without specifing them on the command line.
1. at Shell level : Use alias to add the -Xms and -Xmx parameters.
2. at binary level :Search the default values location in the java binary file and change them.....not experienced yet.
Is there a mechanism or a properties File that can be update to change the default parameters ?

Your best bet is by using an alias at the Shell level and use the alias only with those programs that need the extra memory. I don't think there is any config file that you can use to change the default but even if there is, it would be foolish to mess around with it.

JRE 1.4.2 Java Runtime Parameters

Does anyone happen to know where/how these settings are saved on a Windows OS? I'd like to write a program to automatically set this on client machines to make deployment easier as we need to set the -Xmx for each user. I've searched the registry and all files on my machine and turned up nothing. Thanks for any help/suggestions you might have.

The settings are saved in a file named
<windows
folder>\.java\properties<version>e.g.
C:\WINDOWS\.java\properties141_02. The keyname
is javaplugin.jre.params=<runtime params>.You
can see this directly, if you change the runtime
parameters in the Java plugin configuration dialog.
What version of Windows are you running and what JRE
version..only b/c it would be helpful to know if these
settings are saved in different locations depending on
versions. On Win2K Pro & XP Pro w/ JRE 1.4.2 the
settings are in the location I specified in my last

Java runtime parameters

Hi,
Does anyone know how to programmatically set the java-runtime-parameters?
I need to set them to: "-classpath c:\jar\test.jar"
My goal is to access test.jar thru the ActiveX Bridge, and test.jar is not inside the "applet" folder. Note: ActiveX bridge uses the java plug-in which has a default path to the applet folder, I need to programmatically set a java-runtime-parameter "-classpath" to c:\jar\test.jar...
(I know that you can set the java-runtime-parameters thru control panel - java plug-in, but this will not work for what I am doing, I need to do it on the fly programmatically).

After Java VM is launched, I don't think it is possible to change the classpath onfly. If you goal is to load test.jar on fly, you can always rely on classloader to do it. You can make your own classloader and let it to download and define the class you need.

Problem with starting Sun ONE Server after changing Java version

I installed Sun ONE Java Server 6.1 SP6 on Redhat Enterprise 4.0 64bit. This version uses java version "1.4.2_04" which is intalled in /opt/SUNWwbsvr/bin/https/jdk. With this configuration everything works ok. When I changed Java (/usr/java/jdk1.5.0_09) on version "1.5.0_09 (in server.xml) Sun One doesn't start. I have such error:
CORE3170: Configuration initialization failed: Error running init function load-modules: dlopen of /opt/SUNWwbsvr/bin/https/lib/libj2eeplugin.so failed (libjvm.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
I checked file libjvm.so and it is in locations: /opt/SUNWwbsvr/bin/https/lib/ and /usr/java/jdk1.5.0_09/jre/lib/amd64/server.
Does anybody know what is wrong ???

Java Runtime Parameters patch

I currently have a signed applet which uses more than 96MB. To solve this obstacle I want to increase the memory heap. Is there any way, from a signed applet, to alter the Java Runtime Parameters? Ofcourse the user can alter the parameters but I want to take that trouble out of his hands. I am hoping to run a small "patch-applet" which adds the "-Xmx xxx" parameter to the JRE.

Change java parameter dinamically

Hi all!
I've created a java module (JDialog) which is called FROM an external third-part application and my problem is that to execute my java code i need :
-Dswing.noxp=true parameter when I launch java.
but i cannot change java parameters of this external application. Can i change this parameter dinamically from my Java code?

If you are using absolute positioning, and/or forcing the size of the dialog, then the buttons might not show as they would be pushed of the side of the Window.

How can I change java.policy at runtim on client machines using java webst?

I have to change java.policy to launch my application through webstart to provide one RuntimePermission "permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "getClassLoader";"
Its because of a bug in java bug "_http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4809366_"
So, my problem here is, how can I do this dynamically on each client machine's java.policy.
I have spent time on this and found some alternatives
1. Specifying an Additional Policy File at Runtime by launching application "java -Djava.security.manager -Djava.security.policy=someURL SomeApp"

My application downloads a few jars to the client machines using java webstart and then it will get the initial context using the t3 protocal. The jars include wlclient.jar and ojdbc6.jar initially.

The same is working in some other machine which are in different network. So, I have replaced the wlclient.jar with the wlthint3client.jar.
After replacing this jar I was getting the below exception in client logs while requesting a state less session bean.I also checked whether the request is reaching the server (bean) or not, but its not reaching the server.The problem is same at all the machines irrespective of the networks.

I have tried one more thing, I have taken all the required jars to one of the client machines and executed the main class (by setting the required class path) from cmd using java instead of javaws. Surprisingly, its working fine with out any problem using the wlthint3client.jar.
I also tried the same, by placing wlclient.jar using java in the same way(from cmd instead of javaws ), but I was facing the same exception while requesting the second session bean and found the same above exception in client logs.
To resolve this, I come across the java bug that I have given earlier "_http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=4809366_".
In that page, I found a work around for this; suggested by bea to add the Runtime permission "permission java.lang.RuntimePermission "getClassLoader";" to the clients java.policy

I still think your problem is nothing to do with that ancient non-bug and that you should be looking elsewhere. You might be lucky and find someone here who can say "Ah, I know what that is" but I doubt it because since Oracle took over Sun this site has gone down hill big time.

When I turn my computer on, about a dozen programs start up automatically -- which means I have to spend at least a minute closing or minimizing each one. How do I change my startup settings so that the programs only open manually, when I need them?

First go into Users and Groups, under your account, and see what login items you have. Remove any that might be causing the problem.
Second, when you reboot or shut down, make sure that you don't have reopen windows checked - this is likley what's causing your problem.
Third, check the applications that are opening via the Dock and make sure that you don't have Open at Login selected.
Any one of these could cause applications to start when you reboot or start up.

The Apple drivers you install in Windows also puts a Startup Drive icon in the Task Bar. Choose that to change the startup disk back OS X.

I have Mac OS X, using boot camp i installed windows 7. installation was successful but when i try to select to boot back to mac os x via boot camp from Windows 7 control panel, its saying "You may not have privileges to change the startup disk..."

from the boot camp control panel, highlighted "Macintosh HD Mac OS X", click on Restart button or click OK or click Apply buttons gave me "An error occurred while trying to change the startup disk. You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrative privileges and try again."
Im logged in to Windows 7 as admin thou but still giving me the above message.
i rebooted & the option key does not give me option to boot to Mac instead gives me a screen with lock then below is a blank field then a right arrow on the right side, i normally hit the power button from this screen

Documentation for controlling the installation is sadly lacking in detail. This is the best I have seen for the Windows environment:

But, there are numerous other PROPERTY variables that are not discussed. Particularly annoying is the addition of yet another JavaUpdate item with the release of 1.5.0_05. If you can get more information, please post a link to it here.

Hi guyz, since a while i'm facing a random issue when i generate pdf. All the configuration has been done, but when look at in configtool i see a missing parameter:
-Dorg.omg.PortableInterceptor.ORBInitializerClass.com.sap.engine. services.ts.jts.ots.PortableInterceptor.JTSInitializer
Because it's in the recommendation parameter guide i guess it should be in, but someone can tell what those parameter deals about ?

Yes, this service is mandatory if you want to use Adobe document service. It should be set for all server nodes in the config tool. This is Java startup property for Adobe document services. Without this parameter adobe service will not start as a result you will not be able to open adobe documents.
