Character palette easier than keyboard shortcuts?

Am I the only one who hates using the character palette in FM? I find it more time-consuming (unless the character I want is at the top and it just happens to default to my current font) and its hard to read.
Any tips on how to quickly locate what you want in the palette?

I don't quite follow the relationship between thread title and first sentence … but I'll throw in a couple of observations anyway :-}
the only time I ever choose a font in FM is when I'm setting up a (paragraph or character) style
applying styles with F8/F9 is fast and easy
every corporate PC I've ever worked on offers far more fonts than I want to use – where I've been allowed to (or at least, not forbidden to or prevented …) I've moved superfluous fonts to their own directory to make navigating through the ones I do want easier
If you're asking about Format > Font, it appears I can type a single letter to get to the first font with that letter in the name; bonus, I get a sample!

  • Can a keyboard shortcut be applied to a palette button?

Specifically, I would like to be able to be able to highlight some numbers (like 3/8) and use a keyboard shortcut to turn them into a true fraction.  The button is the fractions button in the Open Type palette.  The shortcut could be CONTROL-f, or something that would not change the highlighted text.

That's very promising — I wasn't even familiar with Character Styles.

          Assign Character Style
          Left Arrow
          Delete
          Escape
The reason for this is to clean up a whole number plus a fraction (i.e.    3 3/8 )
I use a dimensioning plug-in (CADTools) and that's how fractional measurements are noted.  I always clean them up manually, but it takes a lot of keystrokes to do it!

  • How to make a keyboard shortcut for this character: ⌘

I am growing very fond of the Character Palette, but there are some characters I like to use allot, and it's becoming a nuisance opening the whole window just to insert a ⌘. I was thinking maybe there is a way to make a keyboard shortcut for this character, just like option-shift-K creates . I opened the keyboard viewer and was thinking maybe I could drag the character into an empty space to create a combo...but it's not letting me. Is there any way to do this?

This is a feature Apple should definitely add customization to on OS X.
You can make custom keyboard layouts that include any characters you want using Ukelele.

I doubt Apple is going to incorporate this into OS X, but you can suggest it here:

  • Extra keypad to make keyboard shortcuts easier?   Shuttle Pro v.2?

    Hi all,
I like the white keyboard that came with my Mac Pro except for the fact the F keys are all squished together. I like how PC keyboards group the F keys in groups of 4. Even with the F keys grouped are not that easy for me to use. I also have a Logitech Internet Navigator keyboard that has media keys along the top. I am visually impaired so I do touch typing and don't look at the keyboard. In fact, I keep the keyboard tray recessed under the desk while I am typing. I am currently using the Mac Pro keyboard with my Mac Pro. I haven't tried using the Logitech keyboard with the Mac Pro.
I'm trying to make it easier to access shortcut keys. I don't really like redefining keyboard keystrokes because I don't know if I am overriding an existing keyboard shutcut. So, a better keyboard shortcut manager would be nice that showed me applications use which shortcut keys. Does such software exist for the mac? Could such programs learn the shortcuts used by newly installed applications?
Also, I think it would be handy to have an external keypad that I can assign shortcuts to. I would want some shortcuts to be global and some to be local to certain apps. Also, I want to be able to use the main keyboard's modifier keys. At least one jog wheel would be nice too. The Shuttle Pro V.2 looks like a possibility but I can find very many articles about it for general use. Most of the articles refer to it being used with pro apps. Anyone care to share their experience with this?
BTW, I use a Logitech TrackMan Marble+ trackball instead of the Mighty Mouse.
I'd appreciate any other suggestions such as keyboards or extra keypads.
    Thanks!
    Steven

I would expect one to be able to add a shortcut to this specific command in FCP X's command editor, but like you I can't seem to find it there.
    I can offer two suggestions:
    1) If you use Save Current Frame more than any other export option, you can easily attach to it the default Cmd-E.
Open Preferences->Destinations, control-click on "Save Current Frame" in the left pane and choose "make default".
    2) You can use the system keyboard shortcuts to assign an appropriate shortcut to "Save Current Frame...".
Open System Preferences->Keyboard->Shortcuts. Click on "App Shortcuts", then click the "+" button to add a new one. Select Final Cut Pro as the application, enter the text of the menu command *exactly* - "Save Current Frame..." without the quotes - then click the box for the shortcut and enter the desired one. I tested this with Cmd-Control-Option-Shift S and it worked immediately (not even needed to quit FCP X).

  • Why have my keyboard shortcuts in Paragraph and Character styles quit working? (indesign cs6)

I can click on the style in the window, but the keyboard shortcut suddenly does nothing.

Hi James. Just a few threads down the list there is this: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1198632?tstart=0
Even the name of the thread is similar to yours.
But first, you should do a bit of housecleaning in your font library. From your description it sound like a big mess.
Do you use any font management tools? Most of the times they do more harm than good (but i am aware that it's a necessary evil for the most part).
The fonts you are trying to use are in the font library or in the indesign document's folder?
While Mac is a lot better than Windows in managing multiple fonts/font versions, it's also a lot more "fragile" if something goes wrong with a font.
Try cleaning the font cache first:
    sudo atsutil databases -remove
    the restart the font server
    sudo atsutil server -shutdown
    sudo atsutil server -ping

  • Keyboard, power, and character palette issues

I have a brand new macbook (about 3 weeks old) that came with leopard pre-installed. I am continually having problems with the laptop not recovering from sleep mode and the keyboard will spontaneously stop working periodically. As well, the special character palette does not work - it doesn't come up at all! I tried resetting my PRAM to resolve the power/keyboard issues to no avail, and I have heard that an os reinstall may resolve the character palette issues, but am wary. Has anyone successfully resolved these issues?

  • More than one keyboard shortcut for an object

Is it possible, with some kind of workaround, to assign more than one keyboard shortcut to an object? The reason that I'd like to do this is because the software that that the project is explaining uses more than one keyboard shortcut.

    Hi again
Okay, what you do is enable the Button option. The Button is then assigned one keyboard shortcut and the TEB a different shortcut. If you don't want to see the button, configure it as invisible with no text and stick it in a corner somewhere.

  • DW CS3 / OS 10.5 - File Palette keyboard shortcuts don't work

Frustrating - on my Dell, I can use the keyboard to
delete/confirm and open files listed in the File Palette. For
example, I can hit backspace/delete and remove a file after
confirming with an Enter. If I want to open a file, I select it and
hit enter - it opens in DW.
The problem lies with my other (preferred) computer. On my
MBPro with OS10.5 and DW CS3, none of my keyboard shortcuts work in
    the same palette.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Pete

When watching videos, I frequently find need to jump forward or backward within the video. I do this using the slider (playhead) on the on screen control.
The problem I have is that if I do that once, from then on, I cannot use the spacebar to play/pause the video. All I get is an annoying beep. Is there a way to reactivate the keyboard controls without having to close Quicktime and restart?
If it makes any difference, I'm running OS X 10.9 on an early 2013 MacBook Pro (15 inch, Retina display). I recently upgraded to Mavericks but the problem predates the upgrade.
What files compression formats and data rates are you using? QT X v10.3 or QT 7 v7.6.6 player? (Assume v10.3 from topic title but wanted to confirm.)
Basically, I am unable to duplicate the stated problem on an iMac using H.264/AAC test files with data rates up to 20+ Mbps in either QT player app. Do have a problem with QT 7 player app being able to "jump" to a new playhead position in high data rate files probably due to a need to read/traverse all of the intervening data. (I.e., can sometimes take several seconds to complete.)
If you feel the problem is a bug connected to your specific platform or the specific type of file you are using while operating under Mavericks, suggest you file a QT Apple Product "Bug" Feedback Report USING THIS FORM.

  • Create keyboard shortcut to flag messages colors other than read

I'm trying to create a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to flag messages in Apple Mail a color other than red. (I've created smart folders associated with different color flags; I want to create a keyboard shortcut that will allow me to quickly flag an item so that it moves to the right smart folder.)
I've gone to system preferences/keyboard/keyboard shortcuts/application shorts and created new shortcuts for Apple Mail. )Control-option-command-o is one.) The 'All Controls' tab is clicked at the bottom. However, the commands don't work.
The instructions above suggest that it should be adding a new command to the menu. I don't see anything new though. Should there be something somwhere?
Thank you in advance for your help with this question. Any suggestions you have would be great appreciated.

    Hello,
When adding a keyboard shortcut for Mail :
    Type in "Menu Title" the menu item exactly as it appears in the application menu, for example "Orange";
In the "Keyboard Shortcut" press the key combination you want to associate.
You'll perhaps have to restart application for the new shortcut to have effect.
    Regards.

  • Shortcuts for the character palette

Is it possible to have a shortcut for the characters in the character palette?

    I recommend this Applescript:
do shell script "open /System/Library/Components/CharacterPalette.component/Contents/SharedSupport/Ch arPaletteServer.app"
Save it as "Application" to launch with a doubleclick. From the Applescript menu it can just be a compiled script.
You can also launch it from Terminal with just the shell command, if you go that way.

  • Keyboard Viewer+ Character Palette = madness

    I am going crazy!!
I turned on the keyboard viewer and the character palette.
Then I closed their windows. I turned them off in System Preferences.
They return every time I wake from sleep or screensaver.
I tried to delete all kinds of preferences. (Any that would change when I enabled
these two windows I would trash.) No good so far.
    Advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    charlie

Update: I was using "Require password when waking from sleep..."
I stopped using that. No more character palette.
    I re-enabled the password thing.
The character palette from H*ll returns.
Weird how it is coupled to the password thing.
Next I am trying logging out, restart etc.

  • I hate it when they change all the keyboard shortcuts. Is there a fix for these?

I don't understand why Adobe thinks that consistency is a bad thing, but it seems that everytime they update they go jerking with my keyboard shortcuts. Last time it was Indesign, this time it Photoshop that has me complaining. Usually I can change things back to the way I like under Edit/ Keyboard Shortcuts... but this time they've really done it.
Probably the 2 sets of shortcuts that I use the most over the last 15 years of using Photoshop, thus have become a natural reflex, when using the program are Toggling between CMYK channels via cmd-1,2,3&4, (sorry using cmd 3,4,5&6 is just completely unnatural) and Fit to Window (cmd-0). I cannot find a menu selection anywhere that would allow me to change these back, and Fit to Window has been completely removed from the view menu altogether! WTF?
I guess I could get used to the new channel key commands if need be, but no Fit to Window? what is this world coming to?
Anyone know of a workaround to this problem.

Heh...found the ad-copy I wrote for AccessPad Pro:
You're a power-user. The applications you work with do your bidding like YoYo Ma's Cello, like Perleman's violin, like Bill Evans' piano.
You've customized the way your applications openall the Tools and Palettes show up right where you like them. You may even have a few custom workspace arrangements for different purposes. You switch between them with a mouse click, and you're ready to go.
You've made brilliant use of Actions, Macros, Scripts and other built-in time- and effort-saving functions.
You know hundreds of keyboard shortcuts, and have spent time reassigning the defaults to more deftly meet your needs. You've assigned F-key shortcuts to some of those functions that don't even have shortcuts.
You're a power-user, but you've run up against a couple things that put a brick wall in front of your ever-increasing efficiency.
Firstyour keyboard is designed for typing actual text. It's been that way since the dawn of the first mechanical typewriters. The way the keys are arranged are meant to make it easy for your fingers to find the keys. Even if you use the arguably better Dvorak arrangement for key assignments. Even if you have one of those split-and-angled "ergonomic keyboards, they're still designed to do one thing well: Let the user type text as efficiently as possible.
Your keyboardwhatever the specieswas never meant to be an efficient, ergonomic way to access the shortcuts you depend on. For your current keyboardnay, ANY keyboardto perform optimally as a shortcut access device, you'd do well to have a third hand, or a freakishly long set of fingers that could bend 360 degrees in any direction.
SecondYour keyboard only allows a finite number of shortcuts. If you find yourself wishing and begging for just one more F-key, so you wouldn't have to get rid of some of your old shortcuts just to add a newly discovered "must-have", you're out of luck. It's about impossible to find one that has any more than 16 F-keys. Even if you could find a keyboard with more user-assignable keys, there's still the matter of the first problem, that is: How to reach them easily and quickly?
Forget all of those hassles, starting now.
The AccessPad Pro, by Phosergistics, is a computer peripheral designed from the ground up to allow youthe kings and queens of all power usersto have access to a virtually unlimited number of shortcuts. It sits on your desk, opposite the hand you use for operating your mouse. You rest your hand on it, in a comfortable relaxed manner. Notice where your thumb naturally falls. Right there, under your thumb, you find that there are buttons that replicated the Command & Option keys found on your keyboard. They can be pressed and activated independently or in tandem.
Under the heel of your hand is a somewhat larger button. Press down slightly, and you'll enable the same behavior as the Shift key on your keyboard.
Using your thumb and the heel of your hand you can enable 6 combinations of modifiers.
Now, look at your fingers. Beneath where they naturally rest on the AccessPad Pro you'll see six gracefully curved rows of buttons, 4 in each row. These buttons are arranged ergonomically, so the slightest curl of your finger can find and press any of the 24 buttons.
Let's do some simple math: 6 combinations of modifier keys, multiplied by 24 easily reachable, user-assignable function buttons...The AccessPad Pro gives you comfortable access to a whopping 144 shortcut assignments, all without moving your hand.
But that's not all. 144 shortcuts isn't enough for you? No problem. You can have a virtually unlimited number of these 144 shortcut sets, user assignable to work system-wide, or on a per-application basis, and you can load any set, any time you want. And because these custom shortcut assignments are written to a preset file using the industry standard XML scripting language, you can save these sets as tiny text files which you can share and trade with users on either the Mac or Windows platform.
You're a power-user. Forget about trying to grow a 3rd hand. Forget about wishing you hand foot-long fingers.
Use your mouse for moving your cursor.
Use your keyboard for typing text.
Use AccessPad Pro to speed up everything else you do on your computer. Try it for a week and you'll wonder how you ever worked without it.

  • Keyboard shortcut to duplicate seq-not intuitive

I find the keyboard shortcut for duplicating seqs in PPro very odd. On a Mac...most apps use the common shortcut of  - cmd-"D". PPro use of  shft-cmd- \ is a bit odd.
Yes I know I can remap but it seems common software global key commands would be the default.  Isn't cmd-"D" true in AE?...not sure.
My last comment while in this mode...I feel keyboard shortcuts should be designed for one hand usage with out tremendous acrobatics. Thus allowing the other hand to be mostly on the mouse.
All Adobe products really should share more of  the same common keyboard shortcuts.

I've already been told by a staffer for one of the other programs that unifying the gui & shorts are considered a worthwhile and not overly daunting part of the process; actually, a necessary set of steps. An iterative part, and yes partly fueled by internal wishes to have a sweet 'suite' and partly by comments from the base. Not a huge must-have-completely-and-forever-finalized by next release, but as part of the ongoing development of the programs. Plural. Manageable workload, and for a perceived worthwhile gain. How & what the changes are ... completely open-ended discussions.
You keep going to the AeFx side of things. That's the program I use the least currently. Which is of course subject to change as my skills and experience and (naturally) needs build. The length of the shorts pdf for that compared to say PrPro is almost laughable. Wow, that's ... a lot of shorts to even think of learning! But then, AeFx is an amazing program. Even for video software. Still, the total number of shorts that would be changed for a "unified set" option isn't that many, really.
For me, your objections are quite similar to say, two people looking at the same building. It's got ... shall we say, "character"? There are pipes hanging across hallways at varying heights, floors that shift up or down an inch or two or four randomly, halls that narrow around wider rooms then open back out, and lights and their accompanying switches placed in a totally random way.
One person says ... leave it as is, ANYONE can just look around and see they need to pay attention to moving around here ... let 'em do so and get on with life.
The other person says ... if we start working on some of this chaos, over time we'll have a building much easier to get around and work in. Fewer knocked noggins on the pipes, less time hunting for light-switches, fewer trips over sudden floor changes.
One chooses which person he/she will be in this scenario. And will probably switch viewpoints depending on the particular issue.
A last comment ... yea, I've noted I've not heard any complaints from any AeFx types other than you. Interesting, eh?
    Neil
