Character set nls_lang

Oracle 9i
nls_lang: AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII
Oracle client 8.x
The above parameters work just fine.
I just installed Oracle client 9.2.0.1.0 for Windows and set nls_lang from 'NA' to 'AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII' and things do not work.
I have a field in the database defined as varchar(16) and stored and encoded values using us7ascii setup. Now when I installed Oracle client 9.2 I cannot decode it even I set nls_lang to 'AMERICAN_AMERICA.US7ASCII'
Any help is appreciated.
Regards,
HD

Can you define "things do not work"? Do you get an error? Or do you see invalid data?
What is the NLS_CHARACTERSET on the database? Are you storing anything other than basic English characters in the database?

  • Std::string NLS_LANG character sets

    I'm an OCI user but not a pure one. Because I use the free available OTL (Oracle Template Library) from S.Kuchin which is a wrapper around OIC I hope this not off topic here.
    The library offers the possibility to read database strings from VARCHAR2 fields to
    a std::string. I know that oracle does character converting at client side controlled
    via NLS_LANG environment variable.
    It's clear to me that reading database strings to std::string is no problem for
    one byte character sets liike ISO-8859-1. But how about when I let point NLS_LANG
    to UTF-8 or chinese character set e.g. ZHT16BIG5 ?
    Is it still safe to read the result to a std::string ?
    For example I have a database with default characterset AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P15. I stored some German umlaut in some
    table. I wrote a small program using OTL and set NLS_LANG to UTF8 on client side.
    I fetched the data from server to client, stored the data in a std::string, pushed them in a file and yes the data were stored as UTF8.
    Is it really so simple or is it dangerous to read the UTF8-converted data to
    std::string ? Wat is the common rule ? When may and when may I not read the data
    to std::string ?

  • Sql developer vs nls_lang/character set

    Hi
    I've been trying to change the character set for sql developer but I can't seem to get it done.
    I've tried:
    <ul>
    <li>regedit: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8
    <li>Windows env: NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8
    <li>dos env: set NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.AL32UTF8
    </ul>
    and still it is not showing in AL32UTF8, while sqlplus and sqlplusw on the same computer do show the correct character set
    What am I missing?
    Geert

    Duh, nobody ever checks out Preferences?
    That trick's for v1.0; NLS Parameters can be found under the Database node since...
    No guarantee that would enable the desired character set in the desired places, but you can try to change the Encoding under Environment too.

  • How to change the Forms and Reports's NLS_LANG character set on OAS

    Hi,
    I'm having problems with the OAS10g's actual character set, when displaying a report made with Reports Builder 10g who has the letter "ñ" it displays "ñ " with a blank space at the final so i need to change this character set for one that suits this requirement.
    which file or files should i change ??
    could this change affect something else, for example another product in my OAS ??
    Regards
    Carlos

    I have this Forms and Reports Application in Brazilian Potuguese. What I do at new installations is:
    1. Open this file: <MiddlewareOracleHome>/forms/server/default.env and add the NLS parameters below the FORMS_PATH definition:
    FORMS_PATH=D:\Oracle\home207middle\forms;D:\MYENV\Exe;D:\MYENV\Imagens
    NLS_LANG=BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE_BRAZIL.WE8MSWIN1252
    NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS=,.2. Open this file: <MiddlewareOracleHome>/reports/conf/<your_report_server_name>.conf and create an "environment" section with the NLS variables:
       <environment id="MYENV">
          <envVariable name="REPORTS_PATH" value="D:\MYENV\Exe;D:\MYENV\Imagens"/>
          <envVariable name="NLS_LANG" value="BRAZILIAN PORTUGUESE_BRAZIL.WE8MSWIN1252"/>
          <envVariable name="NLS_DATE_FORMAT" value="DD/MM/YYYY"/>
          <envVariable name="NLS_NUMERIC_CHARACTERS" value=",."/>
       </environment>For this one to work, the application must set RP2RROREPORTSENV=MYENV before launching the report.

    Dear all
    How can I know about the existing NLS_LANG and Character set setting for Oracle 8 (Unix platform)
    Thank you

    You can see this from the following
    NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS (i think it is how database was created)
    NLS_INSTANCE_PARAMETERS (this instance)
    NLS_SESSION_PARAMETERS (this you can set just for your login session).

  • Oracle XE and character set

    Hello all,
    I installed Oracle XE on RHEL 4 Linux and I found out that database character set is AL32UTF8. Does anyone know why oracle choose this character set? Maybe because of NLS_LANG env variable? Is it possible to change it to EE8ISO8859P2? Since database is still empty I can drop it and crate new database.
    Do you think it is possible to set some env variables and do new oracle xe instalation including database with iso charset?
    I want to have EE8ISO8859P2 charset because of doing exp/imp from another oracle iso db to oracle xe and it is much easier to do this without charset conversion.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    regards,
    Miha

    When you download XE, you have a choice - take the 'western european' character set download, or the 'unicode' download.
    No other choices.

  • Character Set Error in PL/SQL

    Hi,
    While connecting to PL/SQL Developer I am getting this following error.
    Database character set (AL32UTF8) and client character set (WE8MSWIN1252) are different.
    Character set conversion may cause unexpected results.
    Note: you can set the client character set through the NLS_LANG registry key in
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\KEY_XE.
    Please help me avoid this error.
    Thanks.

    That is presumably a PL/SQL Developer error. You may want to contact the vendor of that particular product to understand that warning because it makes no sense to me.
    It is perfectly appropriate, and quite normal, for the client character set to be a subset of the database character set. Setting the client character set to match the database character set can create a host of problems that lead to invalid data being stored in the database. This appears designed to increase the odds that this particular tool will work correctly while decreasing the odds that everything else in your environment will work correctly. That seems like a relatively poor trade-off to me.

  • Character set migration error to UTF8 urgent

    Hi
    when we migrated from ar8iso889p6 to utf8 characterset we are facing one error when i try to compile one package through forms i am getting error program unit pu not found.
    When i running the source code of that procedure direct from database using sqlplus its running wihtout any problem.How can i migrate this forms from ar8iso889p6 to utf8 characterset. We migrated from databas with ar8iso889p6 oracle 81.7 database to oracle 9.2. database with character set UTF8 (windows 2000) export and import done without any error
    I am using oracle 11i inside the calling forms6i and reports 6i
    with regards
    ramya
    1) this is server side program yaa when connecting with forms i am getting error .When i am running this program using direct sql its working when i running compiling i am getting this error.
    3) yes i am using 11 i (11.5.10) inside its calling forms 6i and reports .Why this is giving problem using forms.Is there any setting changing in forms nls_lang
    with regards

    Hi Ramya
    what i understand from your question is that you are trying to compile a procedure from a forms interface at client side?
    if yes you should check the code in the forms that is calling the compilation package.
    does it contains strings that might be affected from the character set change???

  • Changing database character set

    Can anyone help with the way to change the database character set.
    I am runn into problem while exporting with error message exp-00091
    Thanks

    You don't need to change the database character set. You have only to set the correct character set at
    OS level before doing the export. Execute the following at Sql prompt as DBA :
    SQL> select * from v$nls_parameters
      2* where parameter in ('NLS_LANGUAGE', 'NLS_TERRITORY', 'NLS_CHARACTERSET')
    SQL> /
    PARAMETER            VALUE
    NLS_LANGUAGE         AMERICAN
    NLS_TERRITORY        AMERICA
    NLS_CHARACTERSET     WE8ISO8859P15
    SQL>then at OS prompt :
    $ export NLS_LANG=AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P15
    $ exp ..............
    Of course you have to use your values.

  • Changing DB character set for only one schema

    We are interested in changing the characterset of only one user from Western European to AL32UTF8.
    Could you please verify if the following steps will be correct to do the same.
    1. Run CSScan on the one user
    2. Fix any issues
    3. Export that one user (with NLS_LANG set to <your old database character set>)
    4. Create a new database in the AL32UTF8 character set
    5. Import that one user into the new database (with NLS_LANG set to <your old database character set>)

    Actually your title is a little incorrect. You are not changing CS for only one schema in existing DB which is not possible. You are trying to migrate a schema to new CS DB. Which is totally doable and your approach is mostly correct.
    Database Character Set Scanner provide user scan mode
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14225/ch12scanner.htm#i1006013
    Mostly the issue could be data truncation, especially if you have column defined using char or varchar2 vs nchar and nvarchar2
    because char/varchar is defined in bytes, AL32UTF8 is multi-bytes char set, some character of your old data could saved more than 1 bytes in new DB and can't fit into the column size.

    여기서 NLS_CHARACTERSET에 현재 DB의 CHARACTER SET이 들어 있는데
    이 값을 변경하여 DB의 CHARACTER SET을 변경할 수 있다.
    여기서는 US7ASCII에서 KO16KSC5601로 옮기는 경우를 알아보자.
    우선 바꾸고자 하는 CHRACTER SET이 지원되는 지를 다음 명령으로
    확인한다.
    select convert('a','KO16KSC5601','US7ASCII') from dual;
    만약 이 Select 문에서 ORA-01482 에러가 발생하면 지정한 CHARACTER
    SET이 지원되지 않는 경우이며 에러가 발생하지 않으면 CHARACTER
    SET을 변경할 수 있다.
    작업을 하기 전에는 만약을 위해서 DB 전체를 백업 받아두도록 한다.
    CHARACTER SET 을 잘못 변경하면 DB 를 OPEN 할 수가 없기 때문이다.
    1. 다음의 Update문을 실행하여 CHARACTER SET을 변경한다.
    UPDATE sys.props$
    SET value$ = 'KO16KSC5601'
    WHERE name = 'NLS_CHARACTERSET';
    Update 시에 NLS_CHARACTERSET을 지원되지 않는 값으로 잘못 설정하거나
    실수로 콘트롤 문자 같은 것이 들어가게 되면 DB가 Shutdown 된 다음에는
    Startup 이 안되므로 Update 후에 다음 명령으로 확인을 한 다음에
    Commit을 하도록 한다.
    select name, value$
    from sys.props$
    where value$ = 'KO16KSC5601';
    Select가 제대로 출력되면 Commit 하고 Shutdown 했다가 Startup 하게

    하고 UPDATE부터 다시 하도록 한다.
    2. 환경 변수 NLS_LANG 을 변경한다.
    .profile 에서
    NLS_LANG=American_America.KO16KSC5601; export NLS_LANG
    또는 .cshrc 에서.
    setenv NLS_LANG American_America.KO16KSC5601
    *** win95 및 winnt의 client에서는 registry editor에서 NLS_LANG 값을
    맞추어준다.
    주의 !!!
    : 위의 작업을 하기 전에 발생할 가능성이 있는 문제점
    1) update 중 KO16KSC5601 이나 US7ASCII 등에서 철자를 잘못 입력하시면,
    db 재기동 후에, 다음과 같은 에러가 발생합니다.
    ora-12708
    12708, 00000, "error while loading create database NLS parameter %s"
    2) KO16KSC5601과 US7ASCII의 비교
    Character set : KO16KSC5601 인 경우
    ===================================
    : double byte encoding schema 이므로, 한글의 경우 2 bytes 를 크기 1로
    계산하는 함수들이 있습니다.
    그리고, table , column name에 한글을 double quote 없이 사용할 수 있습니다.

    1

    3
    SQL> select lengthb(컬럼1) from 시험1;
    2
    1
    6
    Character set : US7ASCII 인 경우
    =================================
    : single byte 7 bit encoding 을 사용합니다.
    한글로 된 table, column 이름 사용 시 double quote를 반드시 사용해야 한다.
    예)
    SQL> create table "사원"

    SQL> select length("사원이름") from "사원";
    2
    1
    6
    SQL> select lengthb("사원이름") from "사원";
    2
    1
    6
    US7ASCII일 때에는 vsize, lengthb function의 결과가 length 함수와 모두

  • ORA-12709: error while loading create database character set

    I installed Oracle 8.05 on Linux successfully: was able to login
    whith SQLPlus, start and stop the db whith svrmgrl etc.
    During this install I chose WE8ISO8859P9 as the database
    characterset when prompted.
    After that I installed Oracle Application Server 3.02, and now
    I'm getting the
    ORA-12709: error while loading create database character set
    message when I try to start up the database, and the database
    won't mount.
    Platform is RedHat Linux 5.2.
    NLS_LANG set to different settings,
    e.g. AMERICAN_AMERICA.WE8ISO8859P9
    but without success.
    Anyone any clue?
    Thanks!

    You can create the database with WE8DEC character set
    and to use the WE8ISO8859P9 on the client or even on Linux.
    The NLS_LANG setting doesn't effect the database, but the
    interface with the database. The same setting can be used in de
    windows 95/98/NT registry.

  • Ora-12704: character set mismatch

    I'm trying to insert string data into a nvarchar2 column using jdbc and I keep getting the error, ora-12704: character set mismatch. How do I avoid this without using the translate function? I believe my nls variables are all set correctly. Our software will eventually be in Korean.

    Both my database and national character sets are UTF8.
    We are trying to design a system
    that supports internationalization. Majority
    of our customers will be using English but we do have Korean customers. All their data will be in korean. It is my understanding (and I could be wrong) that the korean character set is varying multi-byte. This understanding has lead me to believe I need to define my "character" columns as nchar and nvarchar2. Is this assumption wrong?
    Also, my nls_lang environment variable is AMERICAN_AMERICA.UTF8. I'm currently running Oracle 8.1.6. We have received 8.1.7 but I haven't upgraded yet.
    Thanks in advance!

  • XML data from BLOB to CLOB - character set conversion

    Hi All,
    I'm trying to solve a problem with a character set conversion in PL/SQL in the following scenario:
    1. source is an XML as a BLOB variable.
    2. target is an XML as a CLOB variable.
    3. the problem I have is the following:
    - database character set is set to UTF-8
    - XML character set could be anything (UTF-8, ISO 8859-1, ISO 8859-2, ASCII, ...)
    - I need to write a procedure which converts the source BLOB content into the target CLOB taking into account the XML encoding and converts it into the DB default character set (UTF8).
    I've been able to implement a simple conversion function. However, this function expects static XML encoding ISO-8859-1. The main part of the function looks as follows:
    buffer := UTL_RAW.cast_to_varchar2(
    UTL_RAW.convert(
    DBMS_LOB.SUBSTR(source_blob_variable, 16000, pos)
    , 'American_America.UTF8'
    , 'American_America.we8iso8859p1')
    Does anyone have an idea how to rewrite the code to handle "any" XML encoding in the source BLOB file? In other words, is there a function in Oracle which converts XML character set names into Oracle character set values (ISO-8859-1 to we8iso8859p1, UTF-8 to UTF8, ...)?
    Thanks a lot for any help.
    Julius

    I want to pass a BLOB to some "createXML" procedure and get a proper XMLType in UTF8 character set, properly converted from whatever character set is the input in.As per documentation the generated XML has always the encoding set at the client side depending on NLS_LANG (default UTF-8), regardless of the input encoding, so I don't see a need to parse the PI of the XML:
