Checking a value...String OR int

checking a value...String OR int
how to check a given value whether it is a String OR int
if(jTextField1.getText()...) is a String
     System.out.println("String");
else //if it an int
     System.out.println("int");
How can i check this...
pls,tell.

getText of JTextField ALWAYS returns a String.
You can do this to see if it could be interpreted as an int:
String theText = jTextField1.getText();
try
   int theInt = Integer.parseInt(theText);
   System.out.println("int");
catch (NumberFormatException ex)
   System.out.println("String");
}If it isn't in a form that can be parsed as an int, you will get an exception and the catch block will get executed.

  • How do I know if I can convert a String value to an int value or not?

    Hi,
    I want to know how to make the judgment that if I can convert a String value to an int value or not? Assume that I don't know the String is number or letters

    Again, why?One of the problems (have been dued) in my codelab asks us to write a class as follow
    Write a class definition of a class named 'Value' with the following:
    a constructor accepting a single integer paramter
    a constructor with no parameters
    a method 'setVal' that accepts a single parameter,
    a boolean method, 'wasModified' that returns true if setVal was ever called for the object.
    a method 'getVal' that returns an integer value as follows: if setVal has ever been called, it getVal returns the last value passed to setVal. Otherwise if the "single int parameter" constructor was used to create the object, getVal returns the value passed to that constructor. Otherwise getVal returns 0.
    The setVal(int y) returns nothing, so how do I know whether it has been called or not?
    Thank you

  • Retrieving empty values from multi value string in user profile custom properties

    Hi,
    I created a webpart to save and retrieve data from custom properties. I use the code below to get the stored data:
    for (int i = 0; i < profile[property].Count; i++)
    Item = profile[property][i] == null ? string.Empty : profile[property][i].ToString();
    list.Add(Regex.Split(Item, @"\,\#"));
    Nothinig special about it.
    In my development environment, it works fine. The problem is  in my UAT environment. I'm facing an issue that i hope someone has been through. When the custom property is a multi value string type, it returns a empty string. I tested with HTML and single
    value fields and it works fine.
    Independently of the field type, it saves the data all right.
    Can anyone help me?
    Thanks!!

    Thanks, Chitvan Jain.
    I did as you suggested, but nothing changed. The problem is that profile[propname] comes already blank when using multi value property, even if there is data  to be retrieved.
    One funny thing is that, somehow the code manages to count the number of values there is in the property. Only the data is missing. We can see the exact number of column, cause i check if there's the right number of data, if there isn't, i add up  a empty
    string on the grid cell, but only for viewing. The empty string is not stored in the property.

  • How to force check right value of a JTable cell?

    Hi,
    I have a JTable with a column that must have a value no empty and between 0 and 100. I made a sample with only one column for simplicity.
    The code works fine when the user types some value. However, when the user press ENTER to go to next column, without editing the cell, no checks run.
    I have also other column that the user may type a part of a name and the system must find the full name of a person. In this column, if user uses ENTER without editing the cell, the same problem ocurrs.

    Editing to force the entry of data in a cell is typically done when you press a button to process the data. It doesn't make sense to "edit" the cell when the user presses enter to go to the next cell. What if the user never places focus on a particular cell. Then the cell will never be edited.
    To force a user to enter a valid value once they have started editing you can do something like this:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=57&threadID=575309
    But you can't force a user to visit every cell in the table so you need to handle that as described above.

    You may have working code now, but the code you posted is horrible and I'm going to tell you a much much much better approach for the JDBC part. (You should probably isolate your database code from your user interface code as well, but I'm skipping over that structural problem...)
    Do this instead:
        public void getData(String a){
            PreparedStatement p;
            String strQuery = "select count(*) the_count from customer where id = ?";
            try {
             //create a prepared statement object to execute sql statements, it's better, faster, safer
             p = c.prepareStatement(strQuery);
                // bind the parameter value to the "?"
                p.setInt(1, Integer.parseInt(a) );
                //execute the query
                ResultSet rs = p.executeQuery( );
                // if the query doesn't throw an exception, it will have exactly one row
                rs.next();
                System.out.println("i am testing");
                if (rs.getInt("the_count") > 0 ) {
                // it's there, do what you need to...
             else
                  JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"I could not find the value");
            catch (SQLException e) {
                 // JOptionPane.showMessageDialog(null,"You may enter wrong id");
                 // if you get an exception, something is really wrong, and it's NOT user error
            // always, always, ALWAYS close JDBC resources in a finally block
            finally
                p.close();
        }First, this is simpler and easier to read.
    Second, this retrieves just the needed information, whether or not the id is in the database. Your way will get much much slower as more data goes into the database. My way, if there is an index on the id column, more data doesn;t slow it down very much.
    I've also left some important points in comments.
    No guarantees that there isn't a dumb typo in there; I didn't actually compile it, much less test it. It's at least close though...

  • How to check the value of "The Interrupt Status Flag"?

    Hi, thank you for reading this post!
    Invoking Thread.interrupt() sets the value of the Interrupt Status Flag.
    Just wondering if there is a Java method to check the value of this flag? Or is using isInterrupted() or interrupted() the only way to check?
    http://download.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/essential/concurrency/interrupt.html
    Thank you in advance for your help!
    Eric

    Below is the full code. As soon as the Thread.sleep() is taken out in main(), the interrupt is detected in the child thread. But if the sleep() stays, then the child thread goes into an infinite loop. It's not detected the interrupt.

  • Check input  values are available in Hex

    how to check input values are available between 0x0000000000000001 to
    0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFE
    i am using following code. but error will come
    public boolean hexCheck16(String hex)

    String hex_max = "0xFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFE";

    how to solve?

    Use BigInteger (and lose the "0x").

  • Parsing from string to int

    in my C# project I have an array type of String. the array gets numbers from type int.
    int numCell;
    string[] arr = new string[numCell];
    then i use it in a function like this:
    sum += int.Parse(arr[i]);
    and it works!
    but, when i dothe same thing in WPF it tells me:
    Input string was not in a correct format.
    what shouuld i do?

    Why did you mark your own question as answer? Please unmark it.
    >>if in C# it worked why wouldn't it work in wpf?
    As I have already mentioned, it is because of the actual value of arr[i]. It has nothing to do with Windows Forms or WPF but it is possible that your WPF application has put a different value in the array than your Windows Forms Application did. And if this
    specific value is not a valid number the parsing will always fail. So you should check the values that put into the array and probably use the int.TryParse method to do the parsing:
    int sum;
    if (!int.TryParse(arr[i], out sum))
    //the value of arr[i] was NOT a valid number...
    This will however not change the fact that for example the value "D1" cannot be converted to an int using the int.Parse or int.TryParse method.

  • String to Int and Int to String

    How can I convert a string to Int & and an Int to String ?
    Say I've
    String abc="234"
    and I want the "int" value of "abc", how do I do it ?
    Pl. help.

    String.valueOf(int) takes an int and returns a string.
    Integer.parseInt(str) takes a string, returns an int.
    For all the others long, double, hex etc. RTFM :)

  • Single or multiple check box values displayed in a textbox

    Hi Experts!
    I'm using the following script to display the values of check boxes in a text field.  I would like the word "and" to separate the values if two check boxes are selected. If more than two boxes are selected I want the values to be separated by a comma and then the last value be separated by "and".  Example of two check boxes selected:  A and B.  Example of two or more: A, B, C, and D.  Can this be done?
    form1.page1.page1SF.programs::calculate - (JavaScript, client)
    //displays the values of check boxes named programCB
    var aChkBx = [];
    var vChecks = programCB.all;
    for (var a=0; a<vChecks.length;a++){
    if(!vChecks.item(a).isNull) {
    aChkBx.push(vChecks.item(a).rawValue);
    this.rawValue = aChkBx.join(", ");

    So, the way I see it, you actually have four scenarios. Nothing is checked, one item is checked, two items are checked, and three or more items are checked.
    Here's how I did it.
    I have four checkboxes all with the same name, cb. (You could have many more, and it wouldn't matter as long as they're all named the same thing.) I'm presuming that you will use the captions from the checkboxes as the text you want to enter. I called my text area where I enter the information tfSentence. (It's not a text field, it's just called "Text" in the Object Library.)
    //we need to count how many boxes are checked
    var checked = 0;
    for (i=0; i<=cb.length; i++){
      if (xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"]").rawValue == 1) checked ++;
    //create a string variable to store our sentence
    var str = "";
    //look at the checked variable and choose our case from that
    switch(checked){
      case 0:
        //you may want to do more than just type out a sentence here, like a message box
        tfSentence.rawValue = "Nothing was selected";
        break;
      case 1:
        //you can set text that will appear before your list of items here
        //str = "preliminary text";
        for (i=0; i<=cb.length; i++){
          if (xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"]").rawValue == 1) str += xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"].caption.value.#text").value;
        //you can set text to appear after your list of items here
        //str += "ending text";
        tfSentence.rawValue = str;
        break;
      case 2:
        //str = "preliminary text";
        for (i=0; i<=cb.length; i++){
          if (xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"]").rawValue == 1){
            if (checked == 1) str += " and " + xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"].caption.value.#text").value;
            else str += xfa.resolveNode("cb[+i+"].caption.value.#text").value;
            checked--;
        //str+= "ending text";
        tfSentence.rawValue = str;
        break;
      default:
        //str = "preliminary text";
        for (i=0; i<=cb.length; i++){
          if (xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"]").rawValue == 1){
            if (checked == 1) str += "and " + xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"].caption.value.#text").value;
            else str += xfa.resolveNode("cb["+i+"].caption.value.#text").value + ", ";
            checked--;
        //str += "ending text";
        tfSentence.rawValue = str;

  • How to read a C structure with string and int with a java server using sock

    I ve made a C agent returning some information and I want to get them with my java server. I ve settled communication with connected socket but I m only able to read strings.
    I want to know how can I read strings and int with the same stream because they are sent at the same time:
    C pgm sent structure :
    char* chaine1;
    char* chaine2;
    int nb1;
    int nb2;
    I want to read this with my java stream I know readline methode to get the first two string but after two readline how should I do to get the two int values ?
    Any idea would be a good help...
    thanks.
    Nicolas (France)

    Does the server sent the ints in little endian or big endian format?
    The class java.io.DataInputStream (with the method readInt()) can be used to read ints as binary from the stream - see if you can use it.

  • Value string for GR for normal PO and other

    Hi,
      I want to know whihc value string i sused and which account are updated when we make GR
    1 : For normal PO,  without any account assignment for stovk material
    2: For Subcontract PO
    3: For PO with account assignment
    4: In case of ASSETT
    regards,
      zafar

    FOR Normal PO, BSX Key is hit (i.e Inventory Posting account are hit) where as others are determined from the Accout assignment categories.
    you can check the account assignment Categories from SPRO--> Material Management --> Purchasing --> account assignment --> Maintain account assignment categories.
    select the acccount assignment cat. and click on the details tab. you will find the string in Acc. modification field.
    check this acc. modification key using OBYC Transaction for GBB (Offsetting entry for inventory posting).

    this code basically takes an input of string like " 179 84 48 48 155 " (with spaces)
    then it creates smaller strings in an array like "179","84","48","48","155" without the spaces
    then it creates int values 179,84,48,48,155 and finally after some math functions it prints the corresponding letters.
    the problem is that it is not printing the letter because of some exceptions-->java.lang.NumberFormatException .it comes in the line where i have put stars
    could anybody please help me print the
