Chicago Loop Service-lacking

What is wrong with Verizon in the loop?  Specifically near the Willis Tower?  The spottiness starting about two weeks ago & it's been absolutely TERRIBLE here.  We always had spotty service (at least 3G), but now I cannot receive a text until I'm about two blocks from this location.  And I received a message that I'm at 75% of my data for the month, which is laughable since I haven't been able to use it (stream music on my phone at work).  Is anyone else experiencing these issues & not gotten a response.  I know it's specifically Verizon as my coworkers have AT&T, Sprint, US Cellular & they are all fine.  Not an iphone issue either as Droids are having the same problem.  I don't mind paying as much as I do, but I expect to actually be able to use my phone for what I'm paying for & not receive you're close to your data limit messages as a slap in the face.

Exact same issue here - absolutely zero data service in downtown Chicago.  I just upgraded two new phones (a Moto X and and an iPhone 6) hoping that the serious service issue was related the the actual decide.  Unfortunately this is not the case as I have zero data service (indoors and outdoors) on both devices!  Considering I had a very poor experience upgrading with Verizon to begin with, this is simply unacceptable.  I can't sit/hunt for wifi service just to use my phone at work every day.  I was torn between resigning with Verizon or switching to AT&T... I think I clearly made a mistake and will unfortunately likely need to dump Verizon for both lines.  In taking to social media it looks to be that I am not alone and this remains a serious issue for business people in the loop - not why I pay a premium to be with Verizon, this is ridiculous.

  • Request for Service Updgraade in Chicago Loop

    Where is there a place to request a service upgrade for Chicago's Loop? On 42nd floor and I am unable to make and recieve voice calls, yet receive a weak but usable 4G data signal.

    You are on the 42nd floor of a building in a highly populated downtown area surrounded by buildings of various sizes made with different materials and landscapes. What would possibly make you think the service can be upgraded? Does your office have wifi? Can you forward your cell calls to a desk phone? Can you use verizon messaging on the computer? That's as good as its gonna get.
    Best wishes

  • Poor LTE Chicago loop

    Anyone else experiencing very poor LTE speeds in the loop? Speeds are consistently less than 1mb and anything data related is useless while in multiple outdoor locations. Switching off 4G provides more reliable data service. Voice service is fine. I filed a trouble ticket but no response yet.

    Same problem here. 3+ months ago speeds were consistently in the 10mbps range at my desk at work. Now i get 0.20mbps. At home I get 15 mbps. I have filed 2 trouble tickets with Verizon and they just close them every time saying they are "fixed". They are not fixed, my data service does not work reliable enough to even do a speed test half of the time. My coworkers see the same thing, one has abandoned verizon for a competitor due to this issue.
    Tickets:
    >>ticket numbers removed<<
    Area code 60604.
    Interestingly, after I put in these tickets someone from Verizon called me about upgrading one of my lines where the contract is up. I told them not a chance unless they can fix my data. The person from Verizon said "you're the second person I've talked to today that has a problem with data service in Chicago."

  • Tired of Verizon's customer service & lack of support,misled & being lied too!!!

    Due – April 28th 2012
    Issue:  Overage fees   –     5,310- used
                                                    2,000- allowed usage
                                                    3,310- overage
    I placed a call to Verizon on Monday, April 9th and spoke with a gentleman by the name of James (I think).  He issued the account to be investigated to find out if this was a billing error or a tech issue, ???.  He stated someone will call me back.
    Per the conversation my husband had with a customer service rep later that evening, they informed him that while he is & has been in Mexico, his calls outside of the US from Verizon to Verizon are not free!!!!!  WE WERE NEVER INFORMED OF THIS!!!   She told him that if we make calls to him that it would be free, but he said no it wouldn’t because you’re counting against their (my families) minutes because you show that “I went over” therefore causing my wife and daughter in all of these overage minutes.  We have been very used to free nights & weekends as well as the comfort of Verizon to Verizon calls with no fees and to just now find this out after having the plan changed to the Mexico international plan back in October 2011.  Besides, each and every month we have been told by different customer service reps a different thing each time.  1st I was told that by switching over, it would ONLY be an additional $25.00 a month added to our monthly bill and our coverage would be the same.  Then in December 2011 when we had additional fees, it was because apparently they changed the plan without informing us of the change that the plans unlimited texting did not apply to the Mexico plan????  They issued a credit.  Then in February when I called because of “data” charges (which we do not have a data plan on either of our phones & we have it blocked) they had to issue a credit and in order to avoid text fees was told to only contact each other via voice (calling).  This has been a problem because he drops calls constantly, sometimes it takes 3-4 times for the call to be dialed out before it will go thru to us (are we being charged for those calls (dials) made as minutes???) and the reception is horrible.  He has called the international customer service number for them to check the line or towers and it did help some.  Texting has made it easier for us to communicate with each other.  When I called on Monday, April 9th, I was informed that when he changed the plan for his line that it affected all of our lines (the entire plan).  I was NEVER TOLD THIS in fact I was told that it would apply only to his line!  We have been lied to, misled, misinformed and very unhappy with the service and support we are getting from Verizon.  We have been a very long time customer and in the entire history, we have NEVER experienced a bill this high or issue like this.  If you check the overall average of our monthly usage for each line you will see that this does not make sense and we always still within our monthly plan???  I will admit that in the entire history with Verizon sure we have gone over a few times and I have no problem paying for that difference by $100.00-$200.00 (but this has only happened only a couple times). There is seriously a problem with this bill.  Either the way the plan was set up for my husband’s line has affected the rest of our lines or it apparently has affected our entire plan of which again we were never informed of this.  I mean take a look at our overall monthly averages per line for usage on voice.  My husband’s line always does not have the majority of the minutes used due to his work and travel, however, for myself and my daughter’s line I have never, nor did my daughter use these many minutes.  We have unlimited texting on all of our phone lines and that is how we do the majority of our communication besides our family has Verizon service.  Shouldn’t this be free?!!!! This bill needs to be adjusted ASAP!!
    I called Wednesday, April 11, 2012 and spoke with Lisa to check the status of the investigation and she stated that she is showing no updates at this time.  She advised that if I don’t hear anything by next week to call back.
    Today is Monday, April 16, 2012 and I still have not had a call returned to us regarding this matter!  I am so sick of being lied to time and time again by different customer service reps or for that matter that has not been trained properly on Verizon’s company policy!!  Every single time I speak to someone, each rep tells me something totally different about our plan than the last rep we spoke to!!!  I am tired of not having my phone calls returned.  We have been absolute loyal customers to Verizon for 10 years plus and I am over this kind of unfair, unjust service from this company to the point that we want to switch and I am looking to report them as well as talk to an attorney!

    My experience with Verizon so far (it's been a month) has been awful...  If I can give any advice do not sign up for Verizon if you haven't already... I will be telling everyone I know.  Good LTE coverage does not excuse treating your customers like s***!
    The overall business practices of Verizon are shady and deceptive.  The poor customer service reps get caught in the middle (I'm not blaming them...)
    When I bought my phone, the sales person in the store added an extra $35 fee.  When I called back later to ask what extra fees they charge in the store they said none !?  Now they're looking into it...  Also we had our old phone numbers ported over, so they issued us temporary numbers... Which we ended up being charged for a full month of service on even though we had them for less than 24 hours!  In addition we were charged for a full month on our ported lines  (double charged)
    I think they do this sh** on purpose and hope you won't notice.  Shame on you Verizon.  I will leave as soon as my contract allows and never be your customer again for life!!!  I will also spread this far and wide.  May you fail miserably!

  • Verizon to big?, customer service lacking

    Customer Service run around - Has Verizon gotten too big, to big to handle the customers.  I did a Verizon Edge contract on to lines that were eligible for upgrades.  I received the phones on December 27th and went to the store with the phones. The phones I received were the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus. I asked if I could get both lines with 6 Plus and the rep at the store suggested I send them both back to iPhone 6 and 6 Plus to receive both gray iPhone 6 Plus, due to no restock fees. I called customer service and they sent a return label, I asked how long would it take and the reply as soon as they see the shipping label you can get your phones. Well it has been down hill from there. I sent the phones in on January 5, 2015. I followed the tracking number and the warehouse received them on the January 15, 2015. Now in between time I call customer service and they claim they have no tracking number, go thing I made a copy. I was told I can go into the store and get the new phones. I did and the store told me sorry I am under the Edge contract. I call customer service again and this time I was told I had to wait until the end of my billing cycle. Now which is another 12 days. I did and to no avail, I call customer service, I chatted on line to customer service and I have been on facebook with customer service, and I get it will be 24 hours. I spent the next 5 days on the phone trying to get this corrected and every time I get, it will be 24 hours. I even received a phone call stating it is fixed, which when I longed on line it wasn't fix and I called back to hear, it will be another 24 hours. Today is the 31st and I call once more and explain the whole situation all over again, well sir we will expedite it and it will be 3 to 5 days WHAT???? another 3 to 5 days!!!!!  I have asked to speak to a supervisor and was told "I will e-mail him" - no calls.  Meanwhile my account has been charged additional $190, over my normal bill.  I took the advise of the store clerk and the on-line rep, no problem just send them back and we will get you your iPhone 6 Plus's you have been with Verizon for 6 years you are a good customer. It has been 35 days from the start of the return and I have lost $120 in trade in for both my iPhone 5s and my bill is $391.00 - this has gotten expensive and drawn out.  How do you fix customer service?

    Verizon is by far the worst company I have ever had to deal with and we were customers since before when it was All-tel (a great company btw).  Every time you call with a complaint or a dispute about a bill they make it seem like you are getting your issue resolved and then boom- next bill some new **** charges that don't even make sense.  Furthermore, they got  a family member of mine to accept a tablet under false pretenses.  She understood the deal with her new phone was a free tablet and she thought that meant free!  Well, no there was a $35 registration fee. A $10 activation fee and a one month prorated fee, which once all was said and done and you add in taxes and surcharges, the bill was over $50 higher.  She never even opened the box and when she went to return the device saying she only took it under the false pretenses, they wanted to charge a $70 **** restocking fee!  This company is the worst ever.  I have already pulled 2 of 4 of my phones and can not wait until my contracts are up for the other 2 and be rid of this crap for good!  And I haven't even gotten started on the service in my area!!!!!

  • HP Photsmart 7510 Web Service - lack of

    HP Photsmart 7510 printer  OS-n/a
    error - service connection error - unable to connect to Web Services.
    recently acquired.
    Does anyone have a solution that works?

    Yup, set a static IP address and external DNS for the printer:
    - Print a Network Config Page from the front of the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
    - Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
    - Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
    - On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
    - Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
    - Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
    - Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS. You can choose another external DNS if you wish.
    - Click 'Apply'.
    Now, shut down the router and printer, start the router, wait, then start the printer.
    After this you may need to redo 'Add a Printer' using the new IP address.
    Say thanks by clicking "Kudos" "thumbs up" in the post that helped you.

  • Verizon 4G service lacking in Landisville, PA area

    Why is it that my phone only receives 3G (and mostly 1X) speeds in Landisville, PA?  Of course, it works as 4G everywhere else.  Unfortunately, I work in Landisville and am getting so frustrated with this.  Are there any plans to upgrade the service in this area?

        JulieRae1958, thank you for bringing this concern to our attention. I was able to review the area and I do see that you should be getting stellar 4G services in Landisville. Do you get 3G services just inside your work or even outdoors? What kind of device do you currently have? Please keep us posted.

  • Reconnection, customer service (lack of), incompet...

    I have a restriction on my broadband (late payment) so went to mybt and paid the full amount on 28.08.2013 (before 9pm). Wasn`t back on 24hrs later so phoned bt, listened to the usual automated witch, who said "your outstanding balance is  00.00, until you pay your outstanding balance of NOTHING we cannot reconnect you". Can someone tell me how i pay NOTHING so i can get this joke broadband reconnected?  (I`m not expecting much, as previous encounters with `customer services`=Lmfao, never got anywhere)

    Hi hairpin100,
    Sorry about that, did you manage to get this sorted? If not let me know and I can help.

  • Customer Service - Lack Thereof

    We live in a dead zone and reported it to Verizon Customer Service on Tuesday, July 8th. On the phone with customer support, they acknowledged our request for a neighborhood review, as there is little to no coverage in our area. In addition, nearly all of our neighbors have switched to a carrier who's signal reaches our area, with no penalty for early termination due to no service. Pretty cut and dry right?
    Well, we've now been waiting past the 5-7 days for the review of our neighborhood to happen. Further more, NO ONE will return our calls or our emails to update us on this situation. All the while, we sit in panic and fear that nothing happens to our family and children and that we can't reach emergency help.
    I'm not asking for the world, I'm just asking for a call back. My number has been with Verizon since 1999 and we've been loyal paying customers ever since.

       I worked in financial, billing, and logistics systems for about 40 years. To put this in context: when I started, punch cards and one cycle per day batch processing were the norm. Given the advances in technology that I have witnessed over these last four decades, I consider Verizon's customer site, the billing system (I use that term loosely), and ability to execute as bad as anything I have ever run across.
       A couple of examples -
       Just this morning I looked at three views of my bill and found three different "amounts owed." It appears that Verizon runs its batch updates once per month, and then does not clear the previous numbers. See above.
       My wife tried to get a cell phone and the order was screwed up at least three ways, including a three year old address.
      Speaking of system downtime: Way too much for the 21st century, especially in the middle of a business day.
    On the positive side, the internet works well.

  • [solved] systemd service files don't allow quotes

    Why is it not possible to use quotes in
    ExecStart=
    section of systemd service files?
    For example, I can't use service file like this
    [Unit]
    Description=Pacman mirrorlist update
    [Service]
    Type=oneshot
    ExecStart=wget -O /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.backup "https://www.archlinux.org/mirrorlist/?country=DE&country=NL&country=PL&protocol=http&ip_version=4" && cp /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.backup /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist && reflector --verbose -l 50 -p http --sort rate --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
    because systemd will not run it because of presence of quotes:
    Feb 26 08:48:36 nanoBox systemd[1]: [/etc/systemd/system/reflector.service:7] Executable path is not absolute, ignoring: wget -O /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist.backup "URL=http...
    Feb 26 08:48:36 nanoBox systemd[1]: reflector.service lacks both ExecStart= and ExecStop= setting. Refusing.
    I can remove quotes and then the service will run, but the URL parsed to the command will be cut in half, ie it will stop on the first "&" sign and only DE mirrors will be probed.
    Is there some way around it other than creating a separate executable file and calling it from the service? I don't want to multiply unnecessary files if there's way around it.

    Not "is" but "was". Disappearance of that assumption was precisely the reason of starting this thread.
    I had to read this a few times, but I think you mean it as follows. You assumed you could copy from the shell to the service file and it would work the same way. Then you got an error (about the abolute path) so that assumption "disappeared". So far so good. But you didn't exactly figure out what was different, you formed a new assumption and based your thread on that:
    "systemd service files don't allow quotes" (title)
    "Why is it not possible to use quotes in ExecStart= section of systemd service files"
    "because systemd will not run it because of presence of quotes:"
    Like frank604 says, quotes were never the issue (in fact, they are one of the few things with special meaning for both the shell and systemd), yet you still seem to think they were:
    Lockheed wrote wrote:The actual wrong assumption on my part was that this command would run without quotes as service. It does not.
    It is a shame you only quote the first part of my last reply and ignore the questions in the second part. You did almost the same thing with my reply before that and I suspect you also didn't read the man page I mentioned the first time. You basically give me the impression that you think you have it all figured out (even though you come here looking for help) and my follow-up questions aren't worth your time. That usually makes me "move along" pretty quickly, but I'm trying one last time, because even though "The service now works", I'd like to see that you actually understand why it didn't work before.
    The only thing you really answered was "Changing paths to absolute made no difference.", but that shouldn't be, so when you mentioned empirical evidence, I basically repeated the question asking for some of this evidence (as in exact error messages for one or more modified ExecStart lines).
    When I take your service file and give wget an absolute path, systemd happily executes wget, but then wget complains because it gets "&&" and "cp" and "--save" etc. as arguments. Those errors are what I see in systemctl status/journal, no longer anything about an absolute path. This is because "&&" has no special meaning. You can use semicolons (";") to separate commands instead (explained in the man page section on command lines) or multiple ExecStart lines like frank604 used (which is cleaner IMO).

  • Where can I find a document's or folder's GUID for the FLD_MOVE service?

    We are currently migrating to Webcenter Content 11.1.1.6 using FrameworkFolders. We need to integrate with several other systems to check-in and retrieve files and would like to place our content in a folder-based heirarchy. I have been using the Generic Web Service to perform integration functions.
    I am trying to use the Folders Services to get information about folders and place files into specific folders.
    First of all, if I check in a file using the "CHECKIN_NEW" service, what folder does the file go into? I can search for the file, but it doesn't seem to belong to a folder? As far as I can tell, the only way to retrieve the file is to search for it. Shouldn't it go to some folder by default?
    Second, lets say I want to move that file to a folder. The "FLD_MOVE" service seems to be what one would use to place a file into a folder. The parameter (item1) that is used to identify what you want to move can take either a GUID or a path to the file. I can't use a path since the file doesn't seem to have a path. I have tried using the dID and the dDocName as the GUID parameter, but the service always comes back and says my item does not exist.
    I can't find any other kind of unique identifier for my document. I have searched and searched for what the GUID could be and how to find out what it is. GUID seems to be specific to the Contribution Folders and Folders Service, as none of the other services reference GUID.
    What is a GUID and how can I figure out what a document's GUID is?

    Very good advice on turning on the auditing. I found a link to how to do this in another post. It seems the documentation around the services lacks the information necessary to use them, but the audit logs can reveal what parameters need to be used to perform an action.
    Turn on server-wide tracing for request audit http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/doc.1111/e10792/c03_processes.htm#CSMSP536 and then create the link from GUI (maybe DIS). You will find your answer in the Server Output.
    By turning on the audit logs and using the browser UI to place a document into a folder, I found this in the audit log (cleaned up for readability):
    IdcService=FLD_CREATE_FILE
    fFileType=owner
    fParentGUID=3BCD5A4050F2D10D9C0A0CF3CC8840C1
    dialogCounter=4
    dDocName=USTST-PFARPIM000808
    constructDidCreateLinkDialog=1
    dID=807
    idcToken=1370802991160%3A01FCE7B4B65CB3E48EDC2A1982C62526
    constructDidCreateLinkDialog=1
    IsJson=1
    Calling the web service using the parameters in bold performed the folder assignment of a document using the document's docName value (which is readily available in the GUI).
    Thanks!

  • Why doesn't Verizon do something about their tech support?????

    Verizon Tech Support is definitely outsourced to call centers outside the country.  They are quick to offer an apology to your problem, but they make it very apparent that it is your problem.  If you do not do exactly as they instruct you to do, they will happily close out your ticket, and your problem still remains unsolved.  I have been through the ringer with them on more than one occassion about the same exact issues.  Each time that I call, I have to go through the same song and dance, eventhough it is the exact same issue that I have contacted them about before, and the issue is clearly on their end and not on my system.  On one occassion, I sat and argued with a gentlemen in Mexico that my issue wasn't fixed.  They said it was fixed.  I said it wasn't, and I would loose my DSL connection while I was on the phone with him.  Another instance, they disconnected my DSL because I have dry loop service and my home line did not have a dial tone, so the techs came out and disconnected everything.  Tech support was a joke then as well.  I was on the phone for several hours trying to convince them that it was an issue on thier end and not mine.They claimed that I had to be home for the repairman to come out, but I did not have to be home for them to come out and disconnect it in the first place.   Because I would not go through all their trouble shooting steps, they would close my ticket out and my problem would remain my problem until I would call them again.   It took an act of God for them to come out and get things reconnected again.  I actually feel physically ill now when I have an issue with my DSL because I know what it will entail just to get the trouble ticket set up.  I have had the operators claim that we have a bad connection (after being on the phone with them for over an hour).  They claim that they will need to call you back, but then they never do.  When I call back and check on the status, guess what, my trouble ticket had been closed out.   This past instance, I called and complained about a slow connection.  The same exact issue that I contacted them about over a month ago.  After going through the song and dance again, they claimed that someone would call me back in 24 hours, and no one has.  I have complained to the FCC and the State Corporation Commission on more than one occassion, but it seems as if it just business as usual for Verizon.  {please keep it relevant} I think that is the only way that they will get the message that what they are doing just isn't going to cut it anymore, and they need to make some changes.  I have cut my home phone line with them because of their lack of service.  If I had an alternative to DSL available to me in my neighborhood, I would gladly take it so I could finally severe all ties to that company.  There has to be something better than business as usual.

    {please keep it relevant}  I contacted tech. support on Sunday about my slow internet connection.  I was pulling 52 kbits/s on a 3M service.  This is the second time that I have had this issue.  The last time I contacted tech support about this issue was about  a month ago.  I went through the same song and dance without any resolution.  Somehow the next day, my connection was corrected and I was getting my 3M service again.
    This lasted for a month.  I called Sunday, 10/11/09 about a slow connection again, Same issue, only able to get 52 kbits/s.  Yet, I had to set through the same old song and dance with Verizon tech support.  We did things like clear my internet explorer cache and cookies and run a speed test, when I already told the foreign gentlemen on the other end of the line what my connection speed was.  How is that going to help improve my connection speed?????  At the end of it all, I was told that I would be contacted by a senior tech support specialist from Verizon within 24 hours.  Sure as the sun shines, it is now Tuesday, 10/13/09 and I have yet to hear anything from the senior Verizon tech. support..   The kicker is that I am not at all surprised by this.  This is now the norm for Verizon.  Yet, I still pay my bill.  I am still under my contract.
    I am going to make a prediction.  Next month about this exact same time, I will be contacting Verizon with the exact same complaint, a slow interner connection, and I will have to go through the same old song and dance and have to do things like re-boot my modem and clear my internet explorer cache and cookies and run a speed test, eventhough I have told the foriegn guy from tech support that I have already done all this.  Then, they will promise that someone from the senior tech support from Verizon will give me a call back within 24 hours and I will not hear from anyone.
    {please keep it relevant}

    WS-BPEL Guide
    Last changed on Dec 10, 2004 by Matthieu Riou
    What is this article about ?
    This is an introduction to WS-BPEL that should give you a practical understanding of what you have to do to create a nice WS-BPEL process, dwelling on most important details. After reading this article you probably won't be able to write a WS-BPEL process from top to bottom. But you should have a pretty good notion of what can be done with it, what it involves and be familiar with the main elements of the grammar.
    First things first, here are the answers to the most trivial questions:
    •     What this new and unique acronym means? Web Services Business Process Execution Language.
    •     What is WS-BPEL? It's an XML grammar (a W3C schema) defining and standardizing structures necessary for web services orchestration.
    •     What does WS-BPEL? Well, actually nothing as it's just a grammar. But a WS-BPEL engine can do many things when executing your process. Like reacting to message reception, manipulating the message data, sending messages to web services and evaluating expressions.
    •     Where does it come from? It has been written by IBM, BEA Systems and Microsoft. Siebel and SAP joined these three and the specification has bee donated to OASIS.
    •     Where does WS-BPEL fit? It's a very good candidate to add an orchestration layer to a Service Oriented Architecture. It will make your services collaborate nicely and will encapsulate the cross-service business logic. It will also help you to introduce long-living transactions.
    Now that the introductory questions have been answered and before going any further I would like to clarify one thing about WSDL (I voluntarily wrote WSDL here, it's not a weird typo). WS-BPEL heavily relies on WSDL to describe the web services it is interacting with (we will see that soon) but that doesn't mean that it can only interact with services using XML(SOAP)/HTTP. WSDL introduces bindings which are the declaration of your services underlying communication medium. Bindings can be declared for local Java, JMS, RMI or anything you like (you might want to check Apache WSIF ). So a WS-BPEL engine using the right bindings could very well invoke many different services.
    So let's see how we are going to take a look at WS-BPEL. First, I'm going to give a very simple and classic example, just to give you a taste of what can be done with WS-BPEL. Then I'll introduce briefly its main activities. We'll see how to handle your process data and manipulate it and also how a particular process execution can be identified among all others. Finally we'll talk about how WS-BPEL introduces long-living transactions.
    A very simple yet demonstrative example
    After reading this chapter, most of you will probably think that the example I'm going to use is too simple and not realistic. I agree. But my goal here is just to give you a flavor of how WS-BPEL can be used, a realistic example would take more than all this article by itself.
    Now, you are the owner of a small bank granting loans to some of your customers. You have sales offices creating new customer contracts. You also have a web site and customers can directly ask for a loan online for small amounts. But before accepting a contract, some verifications are necessary. Those verifications are done using a risk assessment system maintained by a third party and by an in-house system that files the most tough requests. Loan specialists are part of your staff and then use this in-house system to take the final decision.
    So here is, step by step, the process that must be followed:
    1.     A loan request is issued, either from your web site of from one of your agencies. This request is made for a customer and for a certain amount.
    2.     A risk assessment system must be contacted to check whether the risk associated with the customer asking for the loan is high or low (probably based on his credit history).
    1.     If the loan amount is lower than $10,000 and the risk associated to the customer is low, the loan is directly approved (which saves time).
    2.     Otherwise, the loan request must be filed in your in-house system.
    1.     A loan specialist checks the request and gives his final decision.
    2.     The in-house system let you know the specialist's decision.
    3.     The response is sent to the customer.
    So how those pieces would be implemented in a "WS-BPEL aware" architecture? Here we go:
    •     One message triggered by your web site or your sales system and targeted at your process web service. It would hold at least the customer's name and the loan amount.
    •     One message triggered by the WS-BPEL engine to the risk assessment system to ask for the risk associated with the customer. If you pay your bills correctly, an answer message from this message should be expected.
    •     If needed, one message from the WS-BPEL engine to your in-house system to fill the loan request.
    •     One message from your in-house system to the process web service to give it the loan specialist's answer.
    •     Finally, one message back to your web site or to your sales system to give the final answer.
    One thing some of you probably already noticed is that when talking about the process I mentioned the "process web service". That's right, every process created inside a WS-BPEL engine is published as a web service with its own endpoint. When you want to send a message to your process, you actually send it to this web service.
    So now that you have a better idea of what it would take to implement this process in WS-BPEL, it's time to step back a bit.
    Private vs. Public Processes
    It's quite important to differentiate private and public processes (they are called executable and abstract in WS-BPEL). It is the same kind of opposition as between orchestration and choreography and it has a great impact on your architecture.
    Private processes manage services inside a given organization. They act as a service themselves and are centralized. As in an orchestra, there is a chief conductor (the process engine). Public processes manage services across several organizations. Each organization knows about it's own part of the process but doesn't know anything about the activities executed by other parties (for obvious confidentiality reasons). It's a peer-to-peer approach where you know the incoming and the outgoing messages, but nothing about what is done before, after or even meanwhile.
    WS-BPEL is quite good to handle private processes but doesn't perform so well for public ones (don't shoot me!). I have a feeling that even the members of the Oasis committee working on WS-BPEL don't know too much what to do with those. But actually, service choreography (public services) is not completely mature yet in terms of standards and market acceptance where as orchestration already has a widely embraced specification (WS-BPEL, in case you didn't realize) and many commercial implementations as well as open source ones (you may want to check Twister ). So good news, what you are going to learn in this article might prove useful.
    After those high-level considerations, we'll now look into WS-BPEL guts to see what's there and what we could use to build our process.
    WS-BPEL Activities
    In WS-BPEL, everything being part of your process body is an activity. There are basic activities (the ones that do something) and structured activities (the ones that organize basic activities without doing anything by themselves, just like your boss).
    Basic activities
    Invoking a web service is as simple as that:
    <invoke partnerLink="riskAssessor" portType="assessor" operation="assess"/>
    Pretty simple isn't it? In our initial example this declaration would be used to invoke the risk assessment system. Well, I'm actually cheating, you'll see later that you usually need a bit more (like input and output data) but this is a valid invocation.
    To wait for an incoming message, you'll write:
    <receive partnerLink="inhouseSystem" portType="inhousePort" operation="registerLoanRequest"/>
    That would be used to wait for the loan specialists' answer after registering the loan request in your in-house system. Now let's say that you want to send an immediate synchronous answer to this "receive". You'd write, after the receive:
    <reply partnerLink="inhouseSystem" portType="inhousePort" operation="registerLoanRequest"/>
    But how exactly does a WS-BPEL engine know, upon reception of a message, if it has to trigger the creation of a new process execution (a process instance)? Well, there's an attribute just for that: "createInstance".
    <receive partnerLink="loanRequester" portType="loanProcess" operation="processLoanRequest" createInstance="true"/>
    These 3 declarations use common attributes: partnerLink, portType and operation. If you know WSDL, you are already familiar with the port types and operations. Partner links have been introduced in WS-BPEL to model a two-way interaction between a process and a partner (a web service or another process). It lets you define the role of each of the two party in the interaction.
    There are two more basic activities that could prove useful (or at least one of the two):
    <wait until="'2002-12-24T18:00+01:00'"/>
    <empty/>
    Structured activities
    To start with, 3 basic ones: sequence, switch and while. If their behavior is not clear yet, here are examples:
    <sequence>
    <receive .../>
    <invoke .../>
    <invoke .../>
    </sequence>
    <switch xmlns:inventory="http://supply-chain.org/inventory" xmlns:FLT="http://example.com/faults">
    <case condition= "bpws:getVariableProperty(stockResult,level) > 100">
    … do something
    </case>
    <case condition="bpws:getVariableProperty(stockResult,level) >= 0">
    … do something else
    </case>
    <otherwise>
    … do the last thing
    </otherwise>
    </switch>
    <while condition="10 < bpws:getVariableData('loopVar', 'main', '/counter')">
    <assign>
    <copy>
    <from expression="bpws:getVariableData('loopVar', 'main', '/counter') + 1"/>
    <to variable="loopVar" part="main" query="/counter"/>
    </copy>
    </assign>
    </while>
    Another structured activity is 'pick'. It's just like several receive activities waiting at the same time with an additional alarm construct to avoid waiting forever the occurrence of a message:
    <pick>
    <onMessage partnerLink="" portType="" operation="">
    … do something
    </onMessage>
    <onMessage partnerLink="" portType="" operation="">
    … do something else
    </onMessage>
    <onAlarm until="2004-12-31T23:59:00">
    … hey, what the hell are you waiting for?
    </onAlarm>
    <pick>
    Like the receive activity, it's possible to declare a 'createInstance' attribute on the pick element to trigger the creation of a new process instance.
    Finally, for those who found all those activities way too structured and were missing a bit of anarchy, WS-BPEL introduced a flow activity. You basically declare all your activities as you like and then create links that take those activities as origin and target. The flow is also the only way to enable the execution of several parallel branches.
    Process Data
    To handle the process execution data, WS-BPEL introduces a new and unique concept: variables… Ok, that was just a bad attempt to keep you interested. Here is the context: your process engine must receive and send messages as defined by web services WSDL descriptions. To be able to do anything useful it must retain those messages and let you manipulate their content to create new messages or influence the process flow in variables. Therefore variables hold the state of a process execution. WS-BPEL variables can either hold a WSDL message or an arbitrary XML structure defined by a schema.
    An example for the declaration of a variable that can hold a WSDL message (the first stanza comes from the WSDL description, the second is a part of the process definition):
    <message name="creditInformationMessage">
    <part name="firstName" type="xsd:string"/>
    <part name="lastName" type="xsd:string"/>
    <part name="amount" type="xsd:integer"/>
    </message>
    <variable name="requestLoan" messageType="creditInformationMessage"/>
    So now, how do I stuff an incoming message into this variable? Here is the stuffing:
    <receive partnerLink="loanRequester" portType="loanProcess" operation="processLoanRequest" variable="requestLoan"/>
    Hey hey! That's our old receive! A variable attribute can be specified for a receive to hold the incoming message. For a reply, there's also a variable attribute to give the content of the message to send. And for an invoke, there's an inputVariable attribute to give the variable to send and an outputVariable to hold the response (for a synchronous invocation).
    We have variables to hold our message and we know how to give them a value upon reception of a message. But how do you initialize a variable when you want to send a message using it? How do you build a variable using parts of other variables? The answer is assignment. There's an additional activity I didn't mention yet (yes, I'm holding information) named assign. It lets you "copy and paste" the whole content of a variable, only a WSDL part in a message or even just an element (using Xpath). Again, examples are better than idle words:
    <assign>
    <copy>
    <from variable="ob1"/>
    <to variable="knob"/>
    </copy>
    <copy>
    <from variable="userInfo" part="homeAddress"/>
    <to variable="address"/>
    </copy>
    <copy>
    <from variable="house" part="bathroom" query="/shower/soap"/>
    <to variable="cleaningAgent"/>
    </copy>
    <copy>
    <from>hey you</from>
    <to variable="song" part="title"/>
    </copy>
    </assign>
    Once your variable has been set correctly, you can simply use it as inputVariable for an invoke.
    There's still one mystery unsolved in the way you can use variables in WS-BPEL: referencing them in expressions. Let's say you have a variable holding a specific value and want to use this value in the condition of a switch case, how do we do that? By using two functions:
    bpws:getVariableProperty ('variableName', 'propertyName')
    bpws:getVariableData ('variableName', 'partName'?, 'locationPath'?)
    The first function accepts the name of your variable and a property (we'll introduce property later but right now you just need to know that a property is a named XPath expression). The second accepts your variable, an optional part and an optional XPath expression relative to the part root.
    It's now time to see your first complete WS-BPEL example. It triggers the execution of a process upon reception of a message and iterates over a value contained in the message until 10. It's a very stupid example and it's probably the last thing you want to do with WS-BPEL (just as a reminder, WS-BPEL is used to orchestrate web services, not iterate over a value) but it illustrates almost everything we talked about in this paragraph.
    <?xml version='1.0' encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <process name="loop"
    targetNamespace="http://www.smartcomps.org/twister/example/loop/process/"
    xmlns="http://schemas.xmlsoap.org/ws/2003/03/business-process/"
    xmlns:def="http://www.smartcomps.org/twister/examples/loop/service/"
    abstractProcess="no">
         <variables>
              <variable name="loopVar" type="loopVarType"/>
         </variables>
         <correlationSets>
              <correlationSet name="counterCorrel" properties="def:counterId"/>
         </correlationSets>
         <sequence>
              <receive partnerLink="loopPartner" portType="loopPort" operation="loopOp"
              variable="loopVar" createInstance="true">
                   <correlations>
                        <correlation set="counterCorrel" initiate="yes"/>
                   </correlations>
              </receive>
              <while condition="10 > bpws:getVariableData('loopVar', 'main', '/counter')">
                   <assign>
                        <copy>
                             <from expression="bpws:getVariableData('loopVar', 'main', '/counter') + 1"/>
                             <to variable="loopVar" part="main" query="/counter"/>
                        </copy>
                   </assign>
              </while>
         </sequence>
    </process>
    As you probably already realized, data manipulation can quickly become a bit verbose. The WS-BPEL Technical Committee is currently working on it to have something easier for WS-BPEL 2.0.
    Correlation
    Correlation is a notion that can be a bit hard to grasp at first but is very important. So hang on and I'll do my best to be even more clear (somehow) than usually. During its execution, a process has to interact with several different services. This interaction is stateless so there is no way to make sure you will be addressed to a particular instance of a service. So let's imagine you own a wine store and have a web site allowing users from all over the world to order cheap and very good French wine. A service provided by your bank does the billing for you and you also use a shipper to send the orders all over the world. When a user places an order online, your web site generates an order id. But your bank doesn't know anything about your order id, it creates its own billing id corresponding to your order and you always must use this billing id when interacting with your bank (to confirm the transaction just after shipment for example). The shipper also creates his own shipment id that will be used when he confirms that the order has been sent.
    You want to use a WS-BPEL engine to handle those tasks automatically and orchestrate all the services (there's probably much more than three services and many steps involved). That's a really good idea!!! But how do you deal with all these different ids ? Yep, you guessed it: correlation. How does it work? A correlation is an unique way to identify the interaction of your process execution with a given party. A correlation is a list of property elements and a property element is a named XPath expression. This XPath expression must select a value in the exchanged messages that will be the value of the correlation for this particular message. So for our previous example we would define the following elements:
    <property name="billId" type="xsd:string"/>
         <propertyAlias propertyName="billId" messageType="createBillMessage" part="billInfo" query="billId"/>
         <propertyAlias propertyName="billId" messageType="confirmTransactionMessage" part="billId"/>
         <property name="shipId" type="xsd:string"/>
         <propertyAlias propertyName="shipId" messageType="shipMessage" part="shipId"/>
         <correlationSets>
              <correlationSet name="bankCorrelation" properties="billId"/>
              <correlationSet name="shipperCorrelation" properties="shipId"/>
         </correlationSets>
    A correlation can be composed of more than one property (separated by spaces). A property can also have several aliases for each type of message the correlation is used for.
    Usually a correlation is declared for each actor your process has to communicate with. The correlation is initiated during the first message exchange between your process execution and a party and is reused anytime your process execution sends a message to this party.
    Compensation
    I'm not going to detail this chapter as much as I did for the previous ones. This article is already far too long (and therefore too boring). Talking about compensation in a detailed manner would require another article like this one. But to whet your appetite, I'll tell you what its is and what it is the problem it has been designed to solve.
    Compensation is related to error handling. WS-BPEL processes are usually long-lasting (there could be days between 2 activities), they use asynchronous messages and interact with several different services. Introducing the concept of ACID transactions in this context is quite tough. Each of the services involved can locally use its own transaction but it's impossible within your process to control them (and you probably don't want to). So what can you do if you have three asynchronous operations, like 3 invoke / receive couples, that must be executed in an "all or nothing" fashion? How to cancel the two first operations that have already been committed if the third fails?
    Compensation is basically a set of activities attempting to cancel operations that have already been completed inside an unit of work. If an activity fails or a fault is thrown inside this unit of work, this set of activities is supposed to roll back everything that has been already completed in the unit of work in a way specific to your business case. You are the only one who really knows what to do if something goes wrong so you have to provide the necessary operations.
    But this system has important drawbacks:
    •     It is your responsibility to execute the right activities to handle the cancellation.
    •     All the services you are interacting with must support a way to rollback a previously committed transaction (most probably requiring some hard coding).
    Conclusion
    WS-BPEL has been a bit criticized principally for its absence of human participant interaction (as in conventional workflows), everything is a service. But whether you like it or not, it's already standard and if you use it for what it is good at, a pretty good one. Besides it's a good step in the right direction to standardize the BPM - SOA - 'call it what you like' space. And you can always rely on good products like Twister to introduce Worklist functionalities (remember, always a bit of marketing in a conclusion).

  • Need help in Understanding synchronization through code

    I read someone that synchronization is suppose to allow only one thread to access a synchronized method or block of code. But then I wrote some code just to test it out.
    import java.util.ArrayList;
    import java.util.Vector;
    public class Testing extends Thread {
         private String someString;
         static Vector<Integer> someVec;
         static ArrayList<Integer> someArrayList;
         public Testing(String value) {
              someString = value;
              someVec = new Vector<Integer>();
              someArrayList = new ArrayList<Integer>();
         public static void main(String args[]) {
              Testing one = new Testing("one");
              Testing two = new Testing("two");
              one.start();
              two.start();
         public void run() {
              if (someString.equals("one")) {
                   for (int i = 0; i < 1000; i++) {
                        try {
                             someVec.add(i);
                        } catch (RuntimeException e) {
                             // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                             e.printStackTrace();
                        System.out.println("adding with " + i);
              } else
                   for (int i = 0; i < someVec.size(); i++)
                        try {
                             System.out.println("getting .. " + someVec.get(i)+ " from "+someVec.size());
                        } catch (RuntimeException e) {
                             // TODO Auto-generated catch block
                             e.printStackTrace();
    }Now my questions
    1. Why the 2nd thread is able to access the someVec ( Vector) when the 1st thread is still adding some values?
    2. When I changed someVec to someArrayList the result is still the same. I wonder why ?
    3. Lastly, Can anyone modify my code so only either a Vector or a Arraylist will make the program run without error ? Because right now I can run them both fine, so I don't see the difference.
    Thank you.
    Regards,
    Mustafa

    1. Why the 2nd thread is able to access the someVec ( Vector) when the 1st thread is still adding some values?You have not added any synchronization around your Vector operations. Vector's individual methods are synchronized, but that only extends to the execution of those methods. There's no way for that syncing to know that you're doing stuff in a for loop. If you want to complete the for loop without anything else affecting that Vector, then you need a sync block around the body of the loop, and anything else that acceses the Vector must also sync on the same object. The Vector itself is a good candidate for the lock here.
    (There may be other problems as well. I haven't read your code closely. Just noticed the for loop and lack of syncing.)
    2. When I changed someVec to someArrayList the result is still the same. I wonder why ?Same reason.
    3. Lastly, Can anyone modify my code so only either a Vector or a Arraylist will make the program run without error ?No.

    Several nights now my new mac mini (Late 2014), 10.10 has crashed and shutdown. It cold boots with power button press. Logs show it might be trouble with sleep, but posting this since long thread on these troubles with Yosemite is for Mac Mini 2012.
