Choose Dock based on OS

Hello all,
I've run into a weird problem at work. We are deploying some new Leopard macs with Office 2008 and we've noticed that any of our employees who log in are getting the ? icon on their dock for any of the office programs. Turns out that the path names we've used in the past no longer work in office 2008; the path has to be very strict. Seeing as we're only deploying about 30 new work stations and we have over 200 already working with office 2004, we don't want to change the current setup to accomodate the new dock.
What I'm wondering is if there is a way to tell the local machine, via workgroup management, that if a person logs into an OS 10.5 machine to load a dock with the proper icons for Office 2008 (assume all 10.5 machines will have 2008 installed on them), and if that same person logs into a 10.4 or lower to load the other (current) dock with the proper paths for office (2004).
I know how I could do this via a script: hook into their login to check the system profiler and then grab the appropriate dock from the server and copy it into the preferences. However, before I go through those lengths I wanted to see if a tool already exists in the OS. A co-worker hinted at it but I wasn't able to find any way to do it. The management server is running 10.4.11.
Thanks!

I had an idea, but I'm not sure if it's possible (my googling has not turned up any results yet...).
Is it possible to do conditionals in a plist? Meaning, can I have an if/then/else in my dock.plist to determine which links to load? I know that they are xml files, but I'm not sure how the os interprets them.

I have Oracle client 10.2.0.1 software with AWM 10.2.0.1 . I want to build a dimension with value-based hierarchy . In AWM I have hierarchy editor with the two radio buttons for choosing type of hierachy : Level Based hierarchy and Value Based hierarchy . But the secod one (Value Based hierarchy) is disabled - I can not choosing this type of hierarchy . Why this?
    Thanks in advance,

    Hi there,
I really would not recommend that you work with the 10.2.0.1 version of AWM. This version is fairly old now and there have been a number of important bug fixes added to more recent releases.
What version of the Oracle database are you running? And on what operating system?
I suggest that you consult the following link and ensure that you are working with the versions of BOTH database and AWM that are recommended by Oracle:

  • MacBook Pro dock and hard drive wont show up

A couple days ago on my 17" 2011 MacBook Pro, the system dock and internal hard drive icon disappeared. I've restarted a few times with no luck. I unhooked all external drives and restarted but still no luck. The baffling part is that it appears to have started up just fine - my personal wallpaper is still there on both monitors, items on the desktop are still there and I can navigate the Finder menus at the top. BUT I cannot access the internal hard drive or any external hard drives. They dont even appear to be mounting. In addition to that, the dock never shows up either.
No idea how to fix this thing or even troubleshoot it. And I really really dont want to be forced into spending time and money at the local "genius" bar.
    All help is much appreciated.
    thanks

    Hello NC_PV,
Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you have a couple of preferences that got switched.
For your Dock, take a look at this article:
Mac OS X: Additional features of the Dock
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2307
    Command-Option-D
Hide or Show the Dock. This is equivalent of choosing Dock from the Apple menu and then Turn Hiding
On or Turn Hiding Off from the submenu.
For the HD icon, look here:
Mac OS X: Blank disc may not appear in the Finder
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3105
To show the HD on the desktop, Click on the Desktop and then from the menu bar at the top, click on Finder>Preferences>General and then select "Hard disks" under "Show these items on the desktop:"

  • PI 7.31 - Component based alerting v/s Alert framework like 7.0

    PI Experts,
We are in the process of upgrading PI from 7.0 to 7.31. In current PI-7.0, We are using Alert framework for notifying us for the failed messages in PI.
PI-7.3 has the the new feature of Component based alerting, while implementation, we have a choice between "Component Based Alerting" and "Alert FrameWork".
    1.     Can someone guiide me on what are the advantages of using  "Component Based Alerting" v/s "Alert Framework" in PI-7.3?
    2.     If we choose "Component Based Alerting" now, then can we switch it back to "Alert Framework"? If yes, how difficult it is? What are the configuration steps for the "Component Based Alerting"?
    3.     If we choose "Alert Framework" now, then can we switch it back to  "Component Based Alerting"? If yes, how difficult it is? We would be able to use our current alert configuration and alert rules?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    >>>>1.     In current AF, we get the alert for the new error if we have confirmed the alert for the same rule in the system otherwise we do not get a alert for the new error. How the alert confirmation works in CBA
depends how you consume alerts - if you do it with SOLMAN for example it's there (for "number of hours" and/or "until" AFAIK)
    >>>>2.     Is there any way we can move the current alert rules of AF to CBA in 7.3?
not sure if with 7.3 but there is some upgrade function in 7.31 as per:
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw73ehp1/helpdata/en/b2/58b14b70744d0db55599230d2c5bce/frameset.htm

but I've never tried it so don't know if/how it works,

  • How to force safari to open a new window when dock icon is clicked

If Safari is already running on my MacBook Yosemite, and I click on the Safari icon in the dock, the Safari window is brought forward.  The behavior  I want is whenever I click the safari icon on the dock, is that a new safari browser window is opened.  I don't see this option in preferences (or any keyboard  mouse combination) that would make the dock icon open a new browser window.    (an option is available for new windows if you click on a hyperlink, but not if you click on the dock icon) .
p.s. And I don't want to first  have to place focus on the current running safari and then click File New...too many steps when all I want is a new browser window
    Thanks in advance

    Hi css,
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!
I understand that you would like to click on Safari in your Dock and have it open a new Safari Window. As you said in your post, clicking on Safari in the Dock brings the Safari window forward. There are a couple of possibilities to help resolve this situation. You can control-click (right click if enabled) on Safari in your Dock which will give you the option to open a new window. You can also click and hold on Safari, otherwise known as Press, to display these same options.

  • Any best practice to apply role based access control?

    Hi,
I am starting to apply the access permissions for new users as being set by admin. I am choosing Role Based Access Control for this task.
Can you please share the best practices or any built-in feature in JSF to achieve my goal?

    Hi,
The macro pattern is my work. I've received a lot of help from forums as this one and from the Java developers community in general and I am very happy to help others and share my work.
Regarding the architect responsibility of defining the pages according to the roles that have access to them : there is the enterprise.software infrastructure.facade
    java package.
Here I implemented the Facade GoF software design pattern in the GroupsAndRolesAccessFacade java class. Thus, this is the only class the developer uses in order to define groups and roles of users and to define their access as per page.
This is according to Java EE 6 tutorial, section VII Security, page 471.
A group, role or user is created with an Identity Management application or by a custom application.
Pages of the application and their sections are defined or modified together with the group, role or user who has access to them.
For this u can use the createActiveGroup and createActiveRole methods of the GroupsAndRolesAccessFacade class.
I've been in situations where end users very strict about the functionality of the application.
If you try to abstract web development, u can think of writing to database, reading from database and modifying the database as actions.
Each of these actions should have suggester, approver and implementor.
Thus u can't call the createActiveGroup method for example, without calling first the requestActiveGroupCreationHelper and then the approveOrDeclineActiveGroupCreationHelper method.
After the pages a group has access to have been defined with the createActiveGroup method, a developer can find out the pages and their sections a group has access to by calling the getMinimumInformationAboutGroup method.
Further more, if the application is very strict, that is if every action which envolves writing to the database must be recorded, this concept of suggester, approver and implementor is available throught the recordActiveGroupAction method.
For example, there is a web shop, its managers can change the prices of the products, but the boss will want to know who had the dared to lower prices.
This action of lowering prices, is an action of modifying the information in the database and u can save in the database who suggested it, who approved it and who implemented it.
Now that I write about the functionality of the macro pattern, I realise that some methods should have more proper names and I haven't had time to write documentation in the API, but this will be a complete when I add the web pages for the architect to use for defining access control and for the end users to view who and what is doing with their application.

  • Repository based development vs non Repository

    hi *,
as in caps 6 it is possible to create projects outside the repository. one BIG question for me is when to choose repo based development and when not to choose repo based development. has anyone some thoughts to share about this topic?
secondary question for me is how long will repo based projects be supported? will 7.0 or 6.5 also be able to import 5.0.5 JCA projects?
    please share
    regards chris

    Hi chris,
JavaCAPS6 isn't released so there isn't any best practices yet available in terms of repos vs non-repos projects.
Sun has a 5-7 yr end of life policy for its software (I can't remember the exact number). That is, after something is announced "end of life" Sun continues to support it for that period of time. JavaCAPS6 hasn't yet been released, let along announced "end of life", so repos projects supported by JavaCAPS6 will be supported for at least that EOL time frame and most likely much longer.

  • Adding HINTS produce a cost based plan ?

I have an SQL with Oracle Hints. If I do an explain plan report on this SQL, there is data under Rows, Bytes and Cost. If I remove the hints from the SQL, the explain plan has no data under rows, bytes, cost and a note: rule based optimization.
If I compute statistics on one of the tables used by the SQL, using ANALYSE TABLE as recommended, then I have a third explain plan, with data under rows, bytes and cost.
So how, in the absence of statistics, can Hints help produce a cost based plan ?

When you provide hints in the SQL statments you typically are controlling the execution path and the nature of join that SQL statment is choosing. This can give you good results or can slow down performance of your query as the time passes and database is subjected to changes.
If on the other hand you choose COST based optimization and collect statistics as recommended by Oracle then you make optimizer think instead of your self which yealds competative performance when you let optimizer engine decide the execution plan. So If i where you would think of performing following tasks.
1)Collect the statistics for all the tables and indexes refrenced in the SQL statment.
2)Set the optimizer goal to choose.
    3) Vary the optimizer sampling size while collecting the statistics using ANALYZE command. In the past I have noticed that optimizer behavior will change as per the sampling so you might have to adjest your stats while using ANALYZE command to fine tune the behavior of SQL statment.
4)This should improve performance of your query.

  • The dock crashes +/-5 minutes after reboot

As of yesterday, the dock simply crashes +/- 5 minutes after reboot.
I've been running SL successfully since the day it came out, without any problems.
I did upgrade an application, DockStar and feel that's the culprit here, although I have been running a demo version of it successfully.
If I go to system preferences and choose Dock it takes a while before the dock pane shows up and with default settings, and it also acts very slowly when changing settings. If I change the settings and then close the system preferences and then reopens it then my settings have disappeared.
And the bigger problem is that the Dock can not be seen (and it is not hidden at any of the monitor edges either).
How I can restore the dock?

Did you try moving the Mail preferences file to the Desktop (when Mail is NOT running), so that a new one gets created (by the Snow Leopard version of Mail.app)? That preference files is here
    <user home folder>/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
I just did it myself, and it did not change anything related to your accounts or what's in your Inbox, but the Mail windows size went to the default size and look. It did says say my "Outbox" has been renamed "Delivered," which is odd because it did not do that before when using Mail in Snow Leopard. If you drag the preference file to the Desktop instead of trashing it, you can put it back if something important is changed in Mail that you want back.
I just tried moving the Mail preferences file to the Desktop (I also got that odd Outbox/Delivered message), and the Dock indeed doesn't crash now.
BUT, I did loose all my accounts, so I had to drag the original preference file back.
Some extra info: The clean generated com.apple.mail.plist is only 8KB, while mine is 45KB.
Another fact: I only started using Mail for the first time after the Snow Leopard upgrade (because I'm an Exchange user), it's not that this has been an upgraded Mail with old accounts or settings in it.

  • SCM230 - Time based Capacity Leveling by decreased storage (Days Supply)

    Hi,
Reading through the SCM230 training course on the subject of Capacity Leveling, the manual describes the following functionality:
If you choose Time-Based Capacity Leveling by decreasing storage (days'
supply), the system levels the order with the largest days' supply first, then
the one with the second largest supply, and so on.
Can anyone explain this functionality in plain English and what / where are the parameters etc to influnce it?
    Thanks for your help
    Mark

    Hi Marius,
I understand forward and combined forward/backward scheduling in capacity leveling using SNP Heuristics/Optimizer method. However, forward leveling or combined forward/backward leveling does not fulfil the requirement because then capacity overloads (aka SNP planned orders) are shifted in future causing shortage in weeks where demand exist. Business needs a way to shift capacity overloads in previous available buckets, if available capacity exists in previous weeks or months. If sufficient available capacity does not exist in previous weeks then the remaining capacity overload should stay in the week/month where that overload occurs due to excess demand. This will provide business an opportunity to meet demand by finding alternate methods of balancing that capacity overload by either adding capacity (running machines overtime, opening up production on a non-workday) or by outsourcing that overload to sub-contractors. However, neither heuristics nor optimizer method of capacity leveling in SNP fulfils this requirement.

  • Anyone have an iPod Nano?

I just got it for my B-day and i was wondering how ppl liked it. Im still trying to get used to it

I got mine the first weekend they came out (as a VERY early Christmas gift from Mom!!! ) and I love it. I carry so much in my purse (cell phone, iPod, digital camera, car stereo faceplate, etc) and the weight was destroying purses faster than I could bear. So, 1.5 ounces is a welcome change. And, since I carry the camera everywhere, it is great to have a way to show favorite shots without eating up the camera battery. I am always ready to catch an impulsive pic, yet am free to show off previous shots (for several hours if I so choose) I am still waiting for more accessories, but that is always a problem with getting new toys first. I was looking forward to the lanyard ear buds, but I need kid-sized buds and I did not get the impression that was going to be an option.
I got one of those stick on covers for now until I find a case I like and I keep it in an old calculator sleeve. So far, no screen damage. (fingers crossed) Of course, with the size being one of my favorite parts, I do not want a bulky case.
I love that the audiobooks and podcasts are automatically separated from the music. And while I have not used it, I like that I COULD slow down or speed up an audiobook.
I am having a little difficulty with syncing my contacts... it seems only some were copied over. I will need to do a little thinking on that problem.
I am thrilled that Kensington is coming out with a dock-based cassette adapter that allows one to control the iPod using the stereo controls. :)))
So, I am giving it a top rating. I love it and am not sad that I did not wait for the video iPod. I will get that once video is more available. (for now, I can show video on my phone, so I can wait)
