CISCO ASA denies certain websites

hi,
I have a user with Vista who is unable to access certain websites, for example http://www.hsbc.co.uk. Most others on the network can access the website however it appears another user can't. Both users can access the site from home but not from the office using the same laptops. I am not sure which settings on the CISCO ASA I should change to resolve this issue.
I wondered if anyone had any ideas?
thanks
Gavin

You may have enabled URL filtering on ASA which will block the websites which you have configured to be blocked by the filter.Check if you have configured URL filtering and if so remove the URLS which you want to be accessed from the filtering configuration.

  • Cisco ASA and Internal Hosted Website

I have a Cisco ASA 8.4. I have an internal website for an application that they use both internal and externally (app.domain.com/app  is 10.0.0.3) The company that hosts their External Website and DNS created a record that points to http://app.domain.com/app to their public ip 1.2.3.4. Externally everything works great I have port forward for 80 working.  The problem is that when the users bring their laptops in to the office they are unable to get to the interanlly hosted website. I think the the firewall is having an issue letting the traffic back in. If i use the internal DNS and create a zone for domain.com with an A record for app.domain.com and point it to 10.0.0.3 the internal address..it works.  Of course when they try to access the external website it does not work. So if create an A record that points to the web hosts address, it kinda of works...parts of the website don't come up. I really think I there is something like a hairpin or u-turn that needs to be done. Oh by the way this is my first real experince with an ASA. The Symantec Gateway they had worked great. I looked in the config and there were no hairpin or crazy rules, just the standard port forward for 80.  Any ideas? I have tried several suggestions i found on the web, but none have worked.
    Thanks
    Nick

    Hi,
The main problem with such setup (from the ASAs perspective) is usually that the NAT for the server is configured from certain source interface towards some destination interface.
You might for example have this configuration
    object network WEB-SERVER
    host 10.0.0.3
    nat (inside,outside) static interface service 80 80
This would enable connectivity from the behind "outside" interface towards which the translation is configured but not from behind "inside".
I am not sure how different vendor firewalls handle this situation if you say that you only had the original Static PAT configuration towards the external interface.
If you wanted to enable connectivity to the public IP address from your LAN you would have to make a NAT towards the "inside" interface from the "inside" interface. And thats not all. You would also have to configure Dynamic PAT for the source hosts on the LAN behind "inside". The reason for this is that the ASA needs to see the whole TCP conversation between the client/server and since we PAT all the users to the ASA "inside" interface IP address that makes sure that ASA sees the whole conversation between the hosts.
So you could try this configuration on the ASA
    object network PUBLIC-IP
    host
    object network WEB-SERVER
    host 10.0.0.3
    object network LAN
    subnet
nat (inside, inside) 1 source dynamic LAN interface destination static PUBLIC-IP WEB-SERVER
The above configuration would essentially look for connections coming from behind "inside" interface from the source address belonging to LAN to the destination IP address of PUBLIC-IP and proceed to UN-NAT the PUBLIC-IP to WEB-SERVER and PAT the source address to "interface" (inside interface IP address)
You would also perhaps needs to add this command
    same-security-traffic permit intra-interface
This enabled the ASA to pass traffic through the same interface that the traffic arrived in. So basically do that Hairpin/U-turn
You can check the current configuration with the command
    show run same-security-traffic
Do notice that there is a similiar command with a different parameter at the end (inter-interface vs. intra-interface). So check that you have the correct one.
    Hope this helps
Let me know how it goes

  • ASA rate limit certain websites

    Hello,
Is there a way with the ASA to rate limit certain websites?  Match using regex but rate limit only those matches?
For example if I wanted to rate limit youtube, could I match youtube in a regex statement and then inspect http and only rate limit youtube and not the rest of the http traffic?
When I set the rate limit it allways seems to rate-limit whatever I am inspecting, eg http in general.
Or should I look at doing this on my router instead?
    Thanks,
    Dan.

    Dan,
OK - I forwarded that particular example as the way I look at it, it tells me:-
    1) How to configrure RegEx
    2) How to configure a specific URL to perform an action (it just happens in this example it's a block action)
    3) Assign it to a class map
Once you have it in a class map, you are almost there - in theory (I have not tried this) but since you will have a class map, you should be able to assign it to a QoS policy map, rate limiting the amount of traffic?
See the below example of a QoS Rate Limit

  • How to configure QOS on certain IP in the Cisco ASA 5510

    Hi,
I am need to configure QOS on certain IP in the Cisco ASA 5510. Assume the IP's are 10.0.1.5 , 10.0.1.6 , 10.0.1.7. Here i have to configure 512 KBPS for 10.0.1.5 and 2 MBPS for 10.0.1.6 and 10.0.1.7
Can this done on a ASA 5510 series? if yes can you help me how ?
    Regards,
    Venkat

Yes you can do it.You can match the ip addresses in an access-list, put in a class-map and the class-map in a policy map that will do policing.
Good examples for what you want to do are here https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-1230
    I hope it helps.

  • Cisco Pix 506 Blocks certain websites in Win 7/Vista but not XP

We have been using a Pix 506E with Websense for many years and it has worked fine.  We recently got rid of Websense, deleted all references to it in our configuration, and now on Win 7/Vista machines, certain websites are not accessible, yet are accessible on XP machines.  When the Win 7 machine is taken off site, the websites are accessible.  How do we correct this?  If I have to post my configuration, what should not be shown?

  • DNS Resolution in Cisco ASA 5525

    Hey all,
I will begin by telling you what my end goal is, I am trying to block specific websites on our cisco ASA 5525 using FDQN. I know that this functionality for DNS resolution was not implemented until a specific version.
    Current Version: Cisco ASA 5525
    ASA Version: 8.6(1)
I can ping external addresses from the ASA however I cannot ping hostnames like "ping google.ca" does not work.
    What I've done.
    dns domain-lookup inside
    dns domain-lookup outside
name-server x.x.x.x (Primary internal dns server)
name-server x.x.x.x (Secondary internal dns server)
name-server 8.8.8.8 (Google external dns server)
name-server 8.8.4.4 (Google external dns server)
    domain-name example.com
With this config I can, however, ping hostnames of internal servers.
This is an example of me pinging an external hostname.
    ciscoasa# ping google.ca
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 2607:f8b0:4009:803::101f, timeout is 2 seconds:
    No route to host 2607:f8b0:4009:803::101f
Success rate is 0 percent (0/1)
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

    officeasa# ping www.google.com
    Type escape sequence to abort.
Sending 5, 100-byte ICMP Echos to 2607:f8b0:4009:802::1012, timeout is 2 seconds:
    No route to host 2607:f8b0:4009:802::1012
Success rate is 0 percent (0/1)
John, due to the sensitive nature displayed within show route output, is there any other information I can tell you, what exactly did you need to see from this information?
(I know without certain information you cannot help but I need to ensure security on my end)
    Thanks for understanding.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 not able to access flash

    Hi All:
I have searched and searched all over the net for an answer to this question and have decided to just post it. I have a 5505 that was given to me by my job to use for working on my CCNA Sec. cert and did the following:
I plugged it in and booted it up just fine. Made config changes as I followed along with the examples in my CCNA Security book. Got to the point in chapter 14 where the initial setup happens to configure it for working with ASDM. I never did a write mem on it and decided to take it back to square one by unplugging it to allow it to lose the changes that I made. This is where things got ugly.
When it booted back up it got stuck in a bootup loop and couldn't find an IOS. After following all kinds of steps to boot to rommon and tftp another IOS and such (several times) I decided to follow another posting that said that the flash could be corrupted and to just delete it and start anew. Did that and through rommon as it would not boot up normally any more. After trying this over and over for the last couple hours I realized that it would boot from tftp so I did that in hopes of fixing the flash issue.
I've tried deleting it, and re-initializing it and formating it. But the thing is that it no longer SEES the disk0: mount point. I've used two different flash cards...the one that came with it and the one that I already had. With the cover off I can see that there is no activity light next to the flash drive when I issue a delete or initialize or format command.
Here is a copy of some of the output file. Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  • Azure multiple site-to-site VPNs (dynamic gateway) with Cisco ASA devices

    Hello
I've been experimenting with moving certain on-premise servers to Azure however they would need a site-to-site VPN link to our many branch sites e.g. monitoring of nodes.
The documentation says I need to configure a dynamic gateway to have multiple site-to-site VPNs. This is not a problem for our typical Cisco ISR's. However three of our key sites use Cisco ASA devices which are listed as 'Not Compatible' with dynamic routing.
    So I am stuck...
What options are available to me? Is there any sort of tweak-configuration to make a Cisco ASA work with Azure and dynamic routing?
I was hoping Azure's VPN solution would be very flexible.
    Thanks

    Hello RTF_Admin,
    1. Which is the Series of CISCO ASA device you are using?
Thank you for your interest in Windows Azure. The Dynamic routing is not supported for the Cisco ASA family of devices.
Unfortunately, a dynamic routing VPN gateway is required for Multi-Site VPN, VNet to VNet, and Point-to-Site.
However, you should be able to setup a site-to-site VPN with Cisco ASA 5505 series security appliance as demonstrated in this blog:
Step-By-Step: Create a Site-to-Site VPN between your network and Azure
    http://blogs.technet.com/b/canitpro/archive/2013/10/09/step-by-step-create-a-site-to-site-vpn-between-your-network-and-azure.aspx
You can refer to this article for Cisco ASA templates for Static routing:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/azure/dn133793.aspx
If your requirement is only for Multi-Site VPN then there is no option but to upgrade the device as Multisite VPN requires dyanmic routing and unfortunately there is no tweak or workaround due to hardware compatibility issue.
I hope that this information is helpful
    Thanks,
    Syed Irfan Hussain

  • How to configure Cisco ASA 5500 to work with the iPhone

We have Cisco ASA 5510 (latest firmware version), and apparently, according to Cisco website it is compatible with new iPhone 3G's IPSec client:
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/vpnclient/cisco_vpnclient/iPhone/2.0/connectivity/guide/iphone.html
We've setup our first iPhone properly. It connects fine to the network, shows VPN connection as active. Gets a private IP address. But does not let any traffic go to the internal network. We thought it might be DNS problem, but it cannot connect to Exchange server even when using IP address instead of DNS. No luck either.
After checking ASA logs, we found that iPhone goes through Phase 1 authentication correctly. But then gives some kind of error, mentioning "Attribute 5".
Has anybody been successful configuring ASA5500 series (in particular 5510) to be used with iPhone?
I noticed that many people are having these problems.
Please do not post to this topic if you have ANY OTHER Cisco device.
Cisco specifies that iPhone is compatible only with Cisco ASA 5500 Security Appliances and PIX Firewalls. Neither Cisco IOS VPN routers nor the VPN 3000 Series Concentrators support the iPhone VPN capabilities.
Let's keep this topic only for users of ASA 5500 series and PIX Firewalls.
It would be extremely helpful for a large number of users if somebody posted a list of settings for ASA5500 or PIX firewall that DO work with iPhone 2.0
    Thank you!
    Oleg R

We found the solution and a bug in Cisco firmware (seems to be a bug).

We tried to set up this config using the wizards, but it would not work.
Later it turned out that wizards by default set this setting:
    "crypto isakmp nat-traversal 20"
equal to zero and there is no way to change it from the GUI.
Only after we changed it (increased the value from 0 to 20) through the command line the connection started working perfectly.
Please let me know how it works out for you.

Here you have all the content security options available on the ASA. I think only the CX doesn't apply to your HW but the other options are available.

  • Cisco ASA Logging

I have been experiencing some problems at a customer site with a Cisco ASA 5510 where a reboot clears the problem. I am setting up a syslog server to capture the events in  the hope that TAC can assist after the reboot using the captured logs.
My issue right now is that setting the logging to debugging or informational generates a large file in a short time. Given the situation what is the best option when selecting a logging trap so that when TAC reviews the file it is useful to them.
    Thanks.

When logging is set to informational or debug the ASA certainly does generate a lot of log messages. Perhaps an option to consider would be to set console logging to informational or debug and then to connect a PC to the console running some terminal emulator that allows you to specify a fairly large buffer for its screen display. (I like SecureCRT because it allows me to do this and probably there are other emulators that allow this also).
Let the logging to the console run until the problem happens. When the problem happens, go to the PC and do a copy paste of the content of the screen buffer to a file and send the file to TAC. I have done this before and it worked pretty well for me.

  • Cisco asa vulnerability

We might be affected by "Cisco ASA UDP Inspection Engine Denial of Service Vulnerability - CSCtq10441" per
    http://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory/cisco-sa-20120314-asa#software
So we want to move to a release in 8.2 code series which has the fix for the above vulnerability. Per above list, fix should be in 8.2(5.5) code, however, I am not able to see this or any later code on cisco website. I see "Release 8.2.5.ED" on cisco site. Is 8.2(5.5) not available for download now, or is 8.2.5.ED is the one which has the fix? I don't see CSCtq10441 mentioned anywhere in the release notes for 8.2.5.ED
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/release/notes/asarn82.html
We dont want to move to 8.3 onwards as there are lots of bugs in it.
    Thanks,
    Kashish

    Hi Kanish,
Please use the latest 8.2.5 available on the website, it should be the most stable release.
    Thanks.

  • Manually start RADIUS, Authentication and groups for Cisco ASAs

    I am testing moving a 10.7 server to 10.8.
We have used RADIUS to authenticate VPN traffic on our Cisco ASAs in the past.  In the past Server Admin allowed for our ASAs to be added manually to the list of devices using the service.  With Server Admin being removed and the limited funtionality of automated addition of Airports to the system I have no GUI method to get our ASAs into the service.  The ability to tell RADIUS which groups are using the service is no longer available in the GUI as well.
I have found the clients file in /etc/raddb and added our ASAs to the clients list.  I believe I have done this correctly in accordance with the instructions on the freeRADIUS website.
    I need help with:
1- I was hoping someone knows how to manually tell RADIUS which groups are permitted to use the service.
2- Can anyone tell me how to turn on RADIUS?  radiusconfig -start appears to only tell the system to keep it on after a restart if i understand the manual page.
    Thanks

With David's suggestion I was able to get RADIUS running.  The following assumes that you are comfortable with Terminal and would be able to back up any files you edit.  Here is what I did to our fresh installation of 10.8 Server:
In Terminal enter "sudo radiusd -Xx" which tries to turn RADIUS on and runs it with full logging of activity in the window.  The last line after this entry should be something similar to "Ready to process records."  In our new installtion there were errors relating to "instantiating" sql and the ready message never came.
In Terminal enter "sudo pico /etc/raddb/radiusd.conf" and authenticate as needed.  Scroll down in the file to the section where there are "instantiate" items.  I commented out the SQL setup, by putting a # before the line that says "sql".  Save the file by pressing Control-O, press return to save in the default location, and press Control-X to get out of the editor.  I redid step number 1 twice and eventually RADIUS was running.  Removing SQL from RADIUS will assure that problems will arise if you plan to use Server.app to add AirPorts to the network in the future.  OS X Server adds its clients in an SQL database according to the programming notes in the .conf files.  I will only be using our Cisco ASAs so SQL is not relevant to our setup.
Testing the running RADIUS server was easy as well.  In Terminal enter "sudo pico /etc/raddb/users" and authenticate as needed.  This file contains details for users if you wanted to add them manually to the RADIUS server.  For testing purposes I removed the # before a line referring to a user "steve."  I had to get RADIUS restarted to take up the new information about Steve.  I killed the process using Activity Monitor and reran step number 1.
In Terminal I opened a new tab and entered "sudo radtest steve testing localhost 0 testing123 -t".  You should get back a positive authentication message.  Switching back to the original tab will show the output of the RADIUS server.
Reverse the entry in step 3 by adding back the # to comment out the line about steve in the users file.
RADIUS is now running and authenticating against its own users file.
Now we need to add our ASAs to the RADIUS server so it knows that it can authenticate for them.  In Terminal enter "sudo pico /etc/raddb/clients.conf".  We added lines for our ASAs, following the samples in the code.  The information in the lines we added included a generic name for each ASA or device needing RADIUS type authentication, its IP address, and the shared secret for device authentication.
Following David's advice from above I created the RADIUS sacl by entering in Terminal "sudo dseditgroup -q -o create -u <admin user> -P <admin password> -n . com.apple.access_radius".  This created the sacl for the service.  Editing of the associated users and groups permitted to use the service was able to be done in Server.  Be sure to select from the View menu "Show system accounts".  Selecting "Groups" from the left margin of the Server window will show all of the SACLs along with any groups you have created.  The RADIUS sacl can then have groups and users added to it.
To ensure that RADIUS is running and stays running enter the following in Terminal.  First, "sudo radiusd.conf" will start RADIUS without logging in the Terminal window.  Then, "sudo radiusconfig -start" to tell the system to keep it running and also run after a reboot.
I made no changes to our ASA settings and found that I was able to authenticate the "Steve" user from the RADIUS test in the ASA.  I was also able to authenticate a user which had been added to the "Users" in Server.  It appears that the ASA will be permitted to authenticate Open Directory users without additional setup.
I now need to set up our user groups to match those we use in our 10.7 server and add them to the RADIUS SACL and we should be set.
Once I have everything running properly, I will add a post here to close this discussion.
If anyone can shorten this procedure please let us know what you suggest.
    -Erich

  • Cisco ASA and DNS

We purchased a bunch of Cisco ASA 5505 for our branch offices. Offices are made up of less than 20 end points. We are using it as a firewall and DHCP server at hte moment but also assumed that it had DNS server capabilities.  Basically use it as a SOHO router.  My research thus far indicates that yes we can use the device as a dns server but it won't resolve locally defined hosts.  So it can relay dns request to an external dns server but won't allow me to configured an a record on the device itself.
Can anyone verify this before I look into purchasing another device just to do local DNS server services?
    Thanks!

    Joe
As far as i know the ASA cannot act as a DNS server nor can it act as a DNS relay. What you can do is -
    1) configure DNS servers on the ASA that can be used in certain situations for allowing the ASA to resolve a name to an IP. For example using the Botnet filter on the ASA, SSL certificates etc. require the ASA to be able to qurey external DNS servers.
But this is for use by the ASA itself ie. it is used to resolve names within the ASA config. It is not used to allow clients to ask the ASA to resolve DNS names for them. So it can neither act as a DNS server itself nor can it pass on clients DNS queries to DNS servers.
    2) if you use the ASA to hand out IPs via DHCP you can add valid DNS servers within the DHCP config just as you can with Windows DHCP.

  • Can Cisco ASA work with spaces in LDAP DN string to authenticate and assign group policies?

I am having the hardest time getting a definitive answer to this;  basically, I have a Cisco ASA firewall that is using AD via LDAP to authenticate  users and assign them a group policy based on certain AD group memberships.
The problem I think I have is that due to how our AD forest is structured, I have spaces in the DN string, as shown below...  I have tried enclosing the entire string in quotes, etc.  - nothing seems to work.  Basically, the string is not matched, and the users are assigned a non-matching default policy.  Cisco TAC thinks it is due to the spaces (highlighted) but I am not sure sure.
    Can some one please advise?
    CN=VPN_SSL_SPLIT,OU=Grps - ACS,OU=Res - Groups,OU=BU - Vesna.Resources,DC=DOM1,DC=US,DC=LOCAL

We can troubleshoot this issue. Please provide me the following outputs:
    show run aaa-server
    show run ldap
Turn on "debug ldap 255" and reproduce the issue. Paste the output here.
