Cisco ISE - multiple AD - trust relationships

Hello,
I have a customer who has multple AD forests and an ISE deployment running 1.1.3.
The customer scenario is as follows - there is an Internal AD forest (internal users) and an External AD forest (external users such as consultants). The objective is to use Cisco ISE to authenticate and authorize the users in both AD forests. CIsco ISE is connected to the Internal AD forest.
We know that multiple AD support is coming in 2014 with versioon 1.3 - other options such as LDAP/EAP-TLS are not a viable option for the customer.
1.       Currently  – the Internal AD forest has an External, Non-transitive – one-way trust with the External Forest
     a.       The objective here is to use a feature called Selective Authentication  in order to filter the outgoing requests from the External Forest to the Internal Forest – this is a selective trust feature that can be used to control access to specific resources in Internal Forest and for authentication between Internal/External Forest via Cisco ISE
     b.      Preliminary testing has shown that a one way trust seems to work for Cisco ISE authentication/authorization
     c.       Further testing is underway to test the Selective Authentication feature (ie restrict access to specific resources etc…)
Question : has any one used this and is this a supported method by Cisco (I know they mention a mutual trust relationship is required)?
2.       We are exploring a second scenario - the Internal AD forest will have an External, Non-transitive – two-way trust with the External Forest
     a.       Same objectives as in  1 – we would attempt to use the Selective Authentication in the following fashion (this is an example)
          i.      External Forest has outgoing filter to allow access to specific resources in Internal Forest, and for authentication
ii.      Internal Forest has incoming filter to deny access to all resources in External Forest
In this case we would filter so it resembles a 1 way trust relationship - anyone try this, anyone know if this would be a supported method by Cisco?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Cisco has published a nice new guide on Active Directory integration with ISE 1.3. As noted there:
"Cisco ISE can connect with multiple Active Directory domains that do not have a two-way trust or have zero trust between them. Active Directory multi-domain join comprises a set of distinct Active Directory domains with their own groups, attributes, and authorization policies for each join."
I've setup one such deployment just recently and found it quite simple to just add the second domain and use it an en external identity source accordingly.

  • Cisco ISE multiple EAP authentication methods question

With Cisco ISE can you have various clients each using different EAP methods, such as PEAP for Windows machines, MD5 for legacy and TLS for others?
My current efforts seem to fail as if a device gets a request from the ISE for an EAP method it doesnt understand it just times out.
    Thanks in advance.

Multiple EAP Methods work fine. If your Clients are being crap you could try forcing then to use a specific set of Allowed Authentication Method by creating more specific Authentication rules.

  • Cisco ISE and forest trusts vs domain trusts

    Hi All,
Is there any issues with forest trusts with Cisco ISE ?
I have a customer that had external trusts and ISE was working ok for PEAP MSChapv2 user auth across domains.
They recently removed external trusts and changed to forest trusts.  Now auth doesn't work.  Initial error was authc ok, authz fail.
I can search and get lists of AD groups ok for the remote domain.
Using the attribute tab, I can't get attributes for users in remote domain.  I'm thinking since I can't see the memberof attribute, none of my authz pollicies will work.
I have done "leave" and "join" domain again.
In my lab, I have forest trusts and it actually works ok.  A previous poster talked about kerberos issues across forest trusts ?
    Cheers
    Peter.

  • Multiple domains authentication on Cisco ISE

    Hi,
Does the current Cisco ISE supports for authenticating on multiple Active Directories ?
I can only set Cisco ISE to join on single active directory and LDAP
Does anyone have set Cisco ISE to support EAP-FAST with WPAD or PAC provisioning ?
    Thanks
    Pongsatorn

    Hi,
We are into a situation where we need to authenticate users of two domains and these two domains are completely independent (no common DNS server). ISE is not able to resolve one of the domain using the DNS server settings and Adding a host entry for the domain name is not sufficient since Kerberos, GC and LDAP SRVs need to be resolvable as well.
From what I know ISE 1.3 should supports disjointed domains and there is no requirement for ISE to have 2 way trust relationship with domains.
Please share your experience if someone has faced similar situation before.

  • Strip multiple @domain used in username on AD Integration with Cisco ISE?

    Hi there ,
How to strip multiple domain suffixes from username through ISE with AD being used as external Identity Source. Username is being used in username@domain format.
Cisco ISE 1.2 patch 4 introduced strip prefix or suffix @domain realm from username through ISE with AD being used as external Identity Source. But the documentation is not updated for this feature. I am able to strip 1 domain suffix successfully but subsequent ones listed in the suffix list fails to get stripped.
    Any thoughts on the same.
    Thanks Kumar

In the ISE Under Administration > Identity Management > External Identity Sources
Choose Active Directory on the Left, Select your AD Server and select Advanced Settings
Under Identity Suffix Strip, Make sure Strip prefixes listed below: is selected (I know, it says prefix).
In the List of Suffixes box, enter your list of domain suffixes to strip.  The separating character is a comma (,).
If this doesn't fix your issue, then I am afraid that a call to TAC may be in order.
    *****UPDATE*****
Spaces are significant characters.  When listing domains, do so as such:
    @domain.com,@domain.local,@testdomain.com

  • Cisco ISE - What does "Multiple Matched Rule Applies" mean?

    Hi,
In Cisco ISE authroiztion policy configuration, what does the option "multiple matched rule applies" mean? I can understand the "first matched rule", but in "multiple matched rule" how is the "permissions picked if multiple rules match? Or, what is the logic involved in picking up the permissions, if multiple rules are matched in authorization policy.
No where in cisco document I see any explaination for this.
Would appreciate if any one can point me to  a document or explain me the login in selecting the persmissions if multiple rules are matched. Also, what would the use-case for this?
    Thanks and Regards,
    Mohan

I agree with tarik & also this might be helpful for you:
An authorization policy can  consist of a single rule or a set of rules that are user-defined. These  rules act to create a specific policy. For example, a standard policy  can include the rule name using an If-Then convention that links a value  entered for identity groups with specific condition(s) or attributes to  produce a specific set of permissions that create a unique  authorization profile. There are two authorization policy options you  can set:
    •First Matched Rules Apply
    •Multiple Matched Rule Applies
These two options direct Cisco ISE  to use either the first matched or the multiple matched rule type  listed in the standard policy table when it matches the user's set of  permissions. These are the two types of authorization policies that you  can configure:
    •Standard
    •Exception
Standard policies are policies  created to remain in effect for long periods of time, to apply to a  larger group of users or devices or groups, and allow access to specific  or all network endpoints. Standard policies are intended to be stable  and apply to a large groups of users, devices, and groups that share a  common set of privileges.
Standard policies can be used as  templates in which you modify the original values to serve the needs of a  specific identity group, using specific conditions or permissions to  create another type of standard policy to meet the needs of new  divisions, or groups of users, devices, or groups in your network.
By contrast, exception policies  are appropriately named because this type of policy acts as an exception  to the standard policies. Exception polices are intended for  authorizing limited access that is based on a variety of factors  (short-term policy duration, specific types of network devices, network  endpoints or groups, or the need to meet special conditions or  permissions or an immediate requirement).
Exception policies are created to  meet an immediate or short-term need such as authorizing a limited  number of users, devices, or groups to access network resources. An  exception policy lets you create a specific set of customized values for  an identity group, condition, or permission that are tailored for one  user or a subset of users. This allows you to create different or  customized policies to meet your corporate, group, or network needs.

  • [SCOM Forest] -- Certificate -- [Gateway Servers Forest] -- Trust Relationship -- [Multiple Forests]

Hello, and sorry for this strange title, i couldn't find a simple way to write my question.
    - I want to use agent monitoring from my SCOM 2012 SP1 management servers
    to servers in multiple forests.
    - I don't want to set two-way trust between my scom forest and the monitored forests.
    - I would prefer not to install 2 gateway servers in each forest.
So would it be possible to create a intermediate forest for my gateway servers, use certificate authentication between management and gateway servers, and use two way trust between this intermediate forest and forests to monitor.

  • Cisco ISE with multiple Network interface

    Hello,
I am deploying Cisco ISE 1.2 in a distributed deployment and the requirement is to use external Radius proxy feature. ISE PSNs are designed to have 2 L3 NIC's, Eth0 for administration and Eth1 as client side facing NIC for Radius requests. I am interested to know would Cisco ISE in version 1.2 use Eth1 interface to send RADIUS  authentication request to external RADIUS Proxy server.
Could not find above information in Cisco SNS-3400 Series Appliance Ports Reference.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/ise/1.2/installation_guide/ise_app_c-ports.html
    Thanks
    Kumar

    Thanks Ahmad for the reply.
Cisco ISE uses standard RADIUS authentication and authorization port to send request to Exteranl RADIUS proxy. As per the interface/port refrence guide of version 1.2 this is listed that is causing a confusion :-
    Eth0
    Eth1
    Eth2
    Eth3
    Policy   Service node
    Session
    •UDP:1645, 1812 (RADIUS Authentication)
    •UDP:1646, 1813 (RADIUS Accounting)
•UDP: 1700 (RADIUS change of authorization Send)
    •UDP: 1700, 3799 (RADIUS change of authorization Listen/Relay)
    External   Identity Stores
    and Resources
    •TCP: 389, 3268, UDP: 389 (LDAP)
    •TCP: 445 (SMB)
    •TCP: 88, UDP: 88 (KDC)
    •TCP: 464 (KPASS)
    •UDP: 123 (NTP)
    •TCP: 53, UDP: 53 (DNS)
(Admin user interface authentication and endpoint authentication)
In external Identity Stores and Resources it says Eth0 is used for (Admin user interface authentication and endpoint authentication), where under sessions it lists that all ports can be used for RADIUS Authentication and Authorization.
I am not sure what I am missing to understand between the two if you can highlight that.
    Thanks

  • Cisco ISE auth policy based on Active Directory domain membership

I am currently testing the Cisco ISE product and I am trying to find a way to assign an authorization policy based on domain membership.  Our company sorts standard users and project team member into different domains so it seemed like the ideal thing to sort with.  Unfortunately, I am no AD expert and there are a mind boggling number of conditions/expressions to choose from.  I figured I would be the first person to try this.  What have other done to solve this problem?
I have tried using the memberOf attribute and matching to .*(domain).*  Basically looking to see if memberOf contains the domain name.  It works for machine authentication, but when I log it the system cannot find my account info for some reason and boots me to the guest vlan.
    Thank you.

Are the two sets of users actually residing on two separate and independent domains? If so then that is probably where your problem is as ISE can only integrate with a single domain. If you have multiple domains then there must be a trust relationship between them. Another solution is to use LDAP integrations as there is not a limit with LDAP integrations.

  • Cisco ise 1.2 install certificates for ise cluster question

hello all i have an ise cluster of 4 devices. 1 primary admin/secondary monitor, 1 secondary admin/primary admin and 2 policy nodes
i need to install public CA certs on them. can I generate 1 CSR on one of the nodes, that includes a SAN with the DNS names of all the nodes?
Therefore get only 1 cert from the CA, and export and import the same cert into all the other nodes?
or do i have to generate 1 CSR for each node and purchase 4 certs? Wild card certs is not an option. tHANKS,

ISE allows you to install a certificate with multiple Subject Alternative Name (SAN) fields. A browser reaching the ISE using any of the listed SAN names will accept the certificate without any error as long as it trusts the CA that signed the certificate.
The CSR for such a certificate cannot be generated from the ISE GUI. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security/identity-services-engine-software/113675-ise-binds-multi-names-00.html
Cisco ISE checks for a matching subject name as follows:
    1. Cisco ISE looks at the subject alternative name (SAN) extension of the certificate. If the SAN contains one or more DNS names, then one of the DNS names must match the FQDN of the Cisco ISE node. If a wildcard certificate is used, then the wildcard domain name must match the domain in the Cisco ISE node's FQDN.
    2. If there are no DNS names in the SAN, or if the SAN is missing entirely, then the Common Name (CN) in the Subject field of the certificate or the wildcard domain in the Subject field of the certificate must match the FQDN of the node.
    3. If no match is found, the certificate is rejected.

  • Cisco ISE 1.2 Patch 6 -- 8 Update failed

    Hi all,
I wanted to know if any bugs was registered for the cumulative patch 8 for Cisco ISE 1.2 and how to mitigate any patch failures.
Important notice : I though that this error could be an unlucky try but i've tested the update two time.
    Indeed, i have three deployment : A Pre-production one, a 4 nodes distributed and a 2 nodes distributed.
The patch works fine on the pre-production one, on the 2 nodes too but fails on the 4 nodes one with a very anormal behaviour.
On the "show nodes status" in Maintenance - Patch manage, i can see that my both PAN are successfully patched and the first PSN too but when the "Patch in progress" appears on the second PSN, the "installed" status is cancelled in the first PSN and become "Patch in progress" so i've two "Patch in progress" in parallel, that is an anormal procedure not discribed by Cisco on the document "Installing a software Patch". (wich discribe a sequential update of all nodes)
The symptoms after this error are :
    - Unable to process EAP-TLS authentications ! (CA are stored on the First PAN and seems to be unavailable from PSN to exchange the handshake)
    - The Application server try to restart but fails indefinitly even if i try to restart the node (on both PSN)
    - GUI Unavailable
    - MAB Auth is working
    - Endpoint and Endpoint Groups menus are missing on the GUI (I push the MAC Address through the ERS API but it is very strange)
    - Logs indicates one first "Patch success" on PAN and a second "Patch failed" still on PAN :(
The task that resolves this issue is to launch the command "patch remove ise 8" on all nodes and everything come back functional.
My big interrogation is that on my two other deployment, the patch was successfull and quick to process.
    Thanks for your help.

This is that i did abviously... but the two PSN stay in status "Node down", the application service won't start correctly with these ADE-OS logs entries :

  • [Cisco ISE 1.2 with 3850 - Trunk AP] Problem with MAB

    Hi everyone,
After reading some documentation about using MAB in a trunk port with the 3850 I would like to know if someone has implemented ISE policies with a 3850 interface in trunk mode. My problem is that when I try using MAB in a trunk port the mac address of the AP it´s no visible in the "show mac address interface" and because of that the AP is not authenticated in ISE. BR,

I know what you mean and I agree with what you are saying :) Nonetheless, at the moment, the official stance from Cisco on this is that 802.1x is not supported on trunk ports. Now one can argue that MAB is different but I think we are just splitting hairs here :)
Like I said, I have gotten stuff to work before but always had some goofy things happening so in general I have stayed away from doing it.
Now in your situation, if your configuration is working fine on the 2960 but not on the 3850, then most likely the issue is with the XE code running on the 3850s. The XE code has been very problematic until recently so you are probably hitting some sort of a defect. As a result, I recommend that you upgrade the switch(es) to 3.3.5 or 3.6.1. Version 3.7.x is also out but it just came out 8 days ago so I would not recommend going to it.

you could create an ISE local user with a GUEST membership and provided you have your ISE password policy set so that it doesn't expire accounts, etc it would be a "permanent" guest account. we do something similiar. sponsors make temporary accounts while long-term or test guest accounts are created in the ise local identity store as guests and are processed the same way. you just have to ensure that the internal user store is part of your guest identity source sequence.

  • Cisco ISE with both internal and External RADIUS Server

    Hi
I have ISE 1.2 , I configured it as management monitor and PSN and it work fine
I would like to know if I can integrate an external radius server and work with both internal and External RADIUS Server simultanously
So some computer (groupe_A in active directory ) will continu to made radius authentication on the ISE internal radius and other computer (groupe_B in active directory) will made radius authentication on an external radius server
I will like to know if it is possible to configure it and how I can do it ?
Thanks in advance for your help
    Regards
    Blaise

Cisco ISE can function both as a RADIUS server and as a RADIUS proxy server. When it acts as a proxy server, Cisco ISE receives authentication and accounting requests from the network access server (NAS) and forwards them to the external RADIUS server. Cisco ISE accepts the results of the requests and returns them to the NAS.
Cisco ISE can simultaneously act as a proxy server to multiple external RADIUS servers. You can use the external RADIUS servers that you configure here in RADIUS server sequences. The External RADIUS Server page lists all the external RADIUS servers that you have defined in Cisco ISE. You can use the filter option to search for specific RADIUS servers based on the name or description, or both. In both simple and rule-based authentication policies, you can use the RADIUS server sequences to proxy the requests to a RADIUS server.
The RADIUS server sequence strips the domain name from the RADIUS-Username attribute for RADIUS authentications. This domain stripping is not applicable for EAP authentications, which use the EAP-Identity attribute. The RADIUS proxy server obtains the username from the RADIUS-Username attribute and strips it from the character that you specify when you configure the RADIUS server sequence. For EAP authentications, the RADIUS proxy server obtains the username from the EAP-Identity attribute. EAP authentications that use the RADIUS server sequence will succeed only if the EAP-Identity and RADIUS-Username values are the same.

  • Cisco ISE (1.3) Posture without Client Provisioning

    Hello readers,
Is it possible to set up Cisco ISE with posture without Client Provisioning?
My customer deploys the NAC Agent via MS SCCM. We prefer a access accept + DACL during the pending state instead of redirecting to client provisioning. But the NAC Agent will only communicate when we redirect to client provisioning.
    Regards,
    Dennis

With ISE you can perform 802.1x first and after that optionally you can perform posture. This is done with Radius, that's why it's really and completely out of band, and there's no such concept of trusted or untrusted port because the traffic is never inline.
Still, with ISE you have another option of "inline Posture", in which there's trusted and untrusted ports. I guess that's for some specific cases in which you can't go out-of-band.
On the other hand, so called "out-of-band" NAC was really always an inline solution, only after the user has authenticated and security policies have been verified then the user goes "out-of-band".
