Clarification ? re saving iTunes movies to DVD

I just want to ask a clarification question about burning a data dvd of movies and tv shows that I have purchased off of iTunes. If I do burn them on a dvd, can I then delete them from my iTunes (as my hard drive is getting full) but still play them in iTunes from the dvd? Obviously I don't want to delete them from the drive if I won't have access to them anymore...or should I just copy them off onto an external firewire drive? (or both?)
I am thinking that it should work since I found in some of the discussion that I should be able to download video content from iTunes to my desktop machine, burn them as a data backup on a dvd and then be able to play them on my laptop which is also authorized for my iTunes account? Are the videos then played directly from the dvd or do I need to have enough hard drive space on the laptop to copy it over before playing?
Please set me straight if this isn't correct! Thanks!

Yes you can do both - burn and transfer to an ext HD. I burn/transfer then drag back when I want to play. I have never tried to play from a data DVD. Burn one and see. I have dragged the file back and it will play on an authorized Mac.
You will have to set your burn to data CD/DVD.

  • ITunes movies to DVD?

I was just wandering if I could put the movies I have purchased on iTunes on a DVD somehow....

You can if what you want is to make a backup, but you can't convert a purchased video to any other format, including burning to a video DVD. The copy protection there at the insistence of the content providers will not allow such conversion. All you can do is back up the video; you can't play it on anything other than your computer, a video iPod, or the just-announced AppleTV.

  • HOW TO BURN ITUNE MOVIES TO DVD

You cannot do this.  You can make a backup copy to data dvd, but you CANNOT burn to a dsik that you can watch in a DVD player.

  • Convert iTunes movies to DVD

I have purchased several movies from iTunes. Since most of the times these movies are played on my APPLETV. However from time to time the children want to watch the movies in their room. I can not find any menu option that will allow me to burn purchased movies to a DVD.
Please explain how to do this?

If I recall, most of the U.S. based companies have been slapped down by the courts.
I purchased the movie, I should be able to burn it to a DVD and watch it on any TV I choose.
No, you didn't. You bought a license for certain types of use of the content. You did not buy a license to burn the movie to DVD. If you had purchased a DVD of the movie, the reverse would be true. You would not have purchased the right to rip the movie to digital format. Some DVDs, which generally cost more, come with an additional license to download the digital content.
I buy music downloads from ITunes, and can burn them, why not movies??
Two entirely different industries. Music went digital quite a while before video and the content providers were caught unawares. It's a pretty safe bet that, if they could, the music producers would prevent you from doing a lot of things.

  • Saving iTunes Movies/TV Shows to an external hard drive

I need to free up space on my dell laptop so I would like to move my iTunes movies/tv shows to an external hard drive while keeping my music on my internal hard drive. So I would like to have two different libraries, one for music on my internal and one for movies/tv shows on my external. What is the simplest way to do this without wiping out my movie collection?

You can create multiple libraries with a shift-start of itunes.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=iTunesWin/8.0/en/15502.html
Press AND HOLD the shift key while starting itunes, and create a new library on your exHD.
Name it something like Movies - don't take the default itunes1 name which will not make sense later.
The new library will be blank. Before you do anything, change the itunes preferences > Advanced tab.
The "Copy to itunes Media Folder" and options needs to be turned ON.
You need to change the itunes media folder location to your exHD.
Now, go to your internal HD to the Movies folder using Win Explorer. Drag that Movie folder and drop it onto iTunes (the source list over on the left, onto the word LIBRARY).
Another way to do it is itunes menu > File > Add folder to library
Repeat for the TV shows folder.
This will copy the files to your exHD, since you already changed the preference to "Copy to itunes Media Folder"
Make sure you can play a few seconds of several movies/TV show to satisfy yourself that it all went well.
Double-check the file locations in iTunes by doing a right-click > show in Windows Explorer.
They should be on your exHD.
The files will still be on your internal drive. You can either delete them using itunes or Win Explorer.
If you use Win Explorer, you'll get ! file not found marks in your original music library.
Things to remember about using multiple libraries:
    1) iTunes always uses the last library it opened. You have to remember to shift-start between libraries.
    2) Every time you do a shift-start, double-check the iTunes preferences advanced to make sure the "itunes media location" and "copy to itunes" is set how you want.
    3) It is easy to forget which library you last had opened, so train yourself to always use a shift-start.

  • Burn itunes movie to dvd

I purchased a few movies and want to burn them to a dvd.  How can I do this?  Apple seems to make this very difficult to do.

The movie studios make it difficult for Apple to allow you.
Basically you cannot burn them to DVD except in the form they are presently for backup purposes or to transfer to another device you can authorize to play them.

  • Itunes Movie to DVD

I have downloaded a movie using i Tunes is it possible to burn it onto a DVD? and if so - can someone twll me how to pleASE?
    THANKS

You can only burn your movie to a Data DVD to create a backup, you can't burn it to a "playable" DVD for use in a regular DVD player or a software program other than iTunes.

"You shall be entitled to export, burn (if applicable) or copy Products solely for personal, noncommercial use. You shall not be entitled to burn Video Products."
That's what the iTunes Store Terms of Service say (chapter 9b).
Most people (including me) read these legal mumbo-jumbo after purchasing, but it's all written down.
The right holders don't like you to burn the videos on DVD.

  • How do i burn iTunes movies to dvd

    Hi,
I purchased several t.v. programs from itunes , would like to make more room on mac desktop, so want to burn programs to dvd's. How do I do that? Thanks, Pamela

You're better off putting the entire iTunes library on an external hard or flash drive. If you want to use DVDs anyway, burn the movie files to a data DVD in the Finder and drag them back when needed.
Content burned to DVD in this way isn't playable outside of a computer, and for DRM protected content, outside of iTunes.

  • Can I burn an iTunes movie to DVD?

I have an older powerbook g4 with dvd burner but can't seem to burn movie from itunes. Anyone have suggestions? Thanks

You can only burn movies to a backup DVD in iTunes; they cannot be burned to a video DVD. If the movie isn't DRM protected, use software such as iMovie and iDVD to create a video DVD of it.

  • ITunes movies, "near-DVD quality"??? too much $$?

Has apple released the actual specs for the "near DVD-quality" besides 640x480? I notice that the movies in iTunes store are 1.3-1.6GB in size. Although the convienence is nice to download movies, Apple is gonna have to reduce the price being that most consumers can buy these titles on DVD at DVD-quality, used or new from $6 to $14.
    Macbook/iMac 20" intel   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I suspect the first method copies the data as a bitmap image, regardless of the fact that the source was a compressed image format. Save the files to your computer and embed them from there.

  • General error saving QuickTime movie for DVD

I have been trying to save my Final Cut Express project into QuickTime Movie so I can put it on a DVD- it gets 30% (about 12 minutes) through the Writing Audio and Video portion when a window pops up that says General Error. I don't know if this is a computer error, FCE error, QT error or what. I tried a bunch of obvious easy fixes that didn't work. It has done it 4 or 5 times over a few days. Suggestions?

...I do have still pics- what is a size that I can use? Will fce change the size or do I have to use another application?...
    Hi(Bonjour)!
    FCE will not resize stills.
So using a large one (say 4000 X 2600 pixels, common for 12 meg still camera) involves a lot of calculation for FCE to fit the size of timeline. If you don't need a such size for some Ken Burn stuff or pan or zooming, stay with smaller size like 720x480 (the size of DV NTSC format) or 1920X1440 for HD.
You can use Photoshop or even preview applications do resize your stills.

  • Burning movies to DVD from iTunes

I have a few dozen movies in my iTunes library that I have acquired from various sources - ripping from disc or copying from an external hard drive. I wish to burn all these movies to DVD to free up space on my computer. I have tried burning the movies with iTunes but my DVD player will not read the disc. It gives me a message saying, "There is no video or audio data." What should I do?

    ErinGillaim wrote:
It may caused by the video codec which are not recognized by your DVD Player.
It's not. iTunes does not burn a regular, playable DVD.
In this case, you can use some third party DVD burning tool to rip iTunes movies to DVD.
Rip means to get eth info off a CD/DVD.
Burn means to create a CD/DVD (because the disc is burned with the laser).
