Class variables outside of method scope?

Hey guys,
I have 3 text fields. 2 are meant for input and 1 for output. I want to take the float values from the 2 input text fields and do some math on them and then output the results in the output text field. Heres the problem, I need to make sure that both the text fields have some value stored in them. Well, that's not the problem, the problem is that the method only seems to be able to check the 'textField' parameter thats passed into the method pasted below. Whenever I try to run checks on the textfield class variables specifically, it doesn't seem to pick up on any of the text field's value changes or anything... Any ideas?
I have the following:
- (void)textFieldDidEndEditing:(UITextField *)textField {
if([heightText.text length] > 0 && [weightText.text length] > 0) {
bmiText.text = @"hi";
else if([textField.text length] > 0) {
bmiText.text = @"atleast this works";
else {
bmiText.text = @"";

Here is the .h file:
@interface BMIViewController : UIViewController {
//...some other variables
UITextField *heightText;
UITextField *weightText;
@property (nonatomic, retain) UITextField *heightText;
@property (nonatomic, retain) UITextField *weightText;
Here is the .m file:
@implementation BMIViewController
@synthesize weightText, heightText;
//...some code...
- (void)textFieldDidEndEditing:(UITextField *)textField {
if([heightText.text length] > 0 && [weightText.text length] > 0) {
bmiText.text = @"hi";
else if([textField.text length] > 0) {
bmiText.text = @"atleast this works";
else {
bmiText.text = @"";

  • Instantiation outside main method

    Why can't you do the following? I get an error message: Java programs\Exp.java:14: non-static variable scan cannot be referenced from a static context
    boxes = scan.nextInt(); I don't understand this message since you can instantiate objects and initialize variables within a class and outside a method with no problem. What's so special about the main method that you cannot do this? By the way, I know how to fix this. I just want to know why you can't do this.
    import java.util.Scanner;
    public class Exp
         Scanner scan = new Scanner(System.in);
         public static void main(String[] args)
              int boxes;
              System.out.println("Enter a number: ");
              boxes = scan.nextInt();
              if(boxes > 5)
                   System.out.println("So what!");
              else
                   System.out.println("Less than!");
                   System.out.println("I don't know.");
    }

    Well, if the objects are instantiated outside the main method then none of them could be used inside that method. You would have to use them outside the main method or any other static method, that is, if I'm getting your point correctly.No. You could still use them within the main method, but first you'd have to instantiate an object of the class.
    Keep in mind that your main method should be pretty lightweight. You should only use it to bootstrap your program (i.e., to start it up at the beginning). So generally you'd instantiate the primary classes of your application, maybe call an initialization or start method on one of them, etc. If your main method is more than 15 or so lines of code it's probably too heavy.
    Or you could just make the field (outside the main class) static, so the (static) main method could use them, but as mentioned already that's generally not the right approach.

  • Outer Class Accessing Inner Classes Variables

    Hi Everyone,
    Should an outer class directly access the private member variables of its inner class? Or should it get their values by calling an appropriate 'getXXX()' method?
    Just wondering.
    Thx.

    If the outer class trys to access the variable that is declared in the inner class with in a class and outside the method, then it can access in the following example
    class outer
         private int x=10;
         class inner
              int y=20;
         public void getOutput()
              inner in=new inner();
              System.out.println("The value of y is" +in.y);
         public static void main(String args[])
              outer out=new outer();
              out.getOutput();
    };

    You can only put assignments or expressions inside methods, constructors or class initializors, or when declaring a variable.
    It has nothing to the with Child extending Parent.
    class Parent {
        int a = 1;
        { a = 1; }
        public Parent() {
            a = 1;
       public void method() {
           a = 1;
    }

  • Method Scope variables controls Multi-Threading !

    Hye there Experts !
    First, let me thank you all for such a brain-stuff sharing around; feel nice to be a part here.
    While browsing through the below article, found something confusing...kindly clarify.
    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-07-2004/jw-0712-threadsafe.html?page=1
    Extract from the above discussion I understand :
    when a variable is moved to method scope instead of instance scope, synchronization is achieved.
    How is this true for servlets ???
    Method scope variables are available only during method call I think...here, since this is a servlet, there will be only one instance and if many (lets say 10) requests hits this servlet object, all these threads will read same counter as all of them enter into this only one method of this object,
    so...this should be still not thread safe I guess.
    I didn't want to execute and see results of this code, but I am trying to understand the key at first.
    Please guide me before brain blows... :-)
    Would also appreciate any references that really says true things about
    'synchronization for enterprize (handle huge requests) web apps - technques for servlets and any other stuff'
    Thanks again guys, have a wonderful time.

    feel nice to be a part here.Welcome to the mad-house ;-)
    Method scope variables are available only during method callWARNING: I'm no guru, so this may be misleading or just plain wrong.. but as I understand it:
    Yep a "local" variable exists only the context of the execution of it's containing method... so a local variable is implicitly bound to the thread that created it (by invoking the method in which the local is declared)... a local variable can't be accessed directly by another thread simply because the other thread has no access-path to the variable (you can't expose a local through getters & setters)... hence locals are thread safe.
    The important bit is that it's the thread which "owns" the local variable... not the declaring method... if the method is executed concurrently by two threads, each thread will have its own private copy of all the local variables.
    One other question though: are locals in static methods still thread safe? I'm not sure.

  • How define a global variable in a class that all the methods will recognize

    hi friends,
    i need to define a global variable in a class that all the methods will recognize it.
    any suggestions?
    thanks,

    Dera Dana,
    In se24, create your own "Z" class.
    Open the Attributes tab.
    Insert your variable in the declaration part.
    EQ:
    Attribute     Level                       Visibility   Typing      Associated Type         Description
    ITAB     Instance Attribute     Public     Type     Structure name     Description
    In the Layout of View page,

  • Defining a variable outside a class.

    Is there anyway I can define a variable outside a class, so that it can be accessable to many different classes. For instance if i have a String:
    homedirectory="c:/home/". How can I make it other classes access the content of this string, without having to define it in every class??
    Cheers.

    Is there anyway I can define a variable outside a
    class,No, all variables must be in a class.
    so that it can be accessable to many different classes.A public static field can be accessed in any class.
    For instance if i have a String: homedirectory="c:/home/". Do you mean like System.getProperty("user.home") ?
    How can I make it other
    classes access the content of this string, without
    having to define it in every class??Use a system property so it can be set on the command line or a public final static field in a class.

  • Instance/Class Variables/Methods

    Can someone please give a CLEAR explanation on what is a Instance Variable, Instance Method, Class Variable, and Class Method? Thanks a lot!

    instance method and variable is one that requires an instance to be created before they can be used.
    Class method and variables don't need an instance. They have the static qualifier.
    For example
    public class Test {
        public String instanceVar;
        static public String classVar;
    }Now to use instanceVar you have to do this
    Test test = new Test();
    test.instanceVar = "";To use classVar
    Test.classVar = "";Another way of looking at it is that each instance of a class (created using new) has its own copy of instance variables.
    Multiple instances of a class however share the same copy of class variables.
    The same pretty much goes for methods.

  • Read variable from other method

    i am coding a method which required a reading from a variable in another method.
    what's the syntax for getting the variable???
    I tried.....
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    public static void main (String[ ]args)
    range_1
    private static double area (int radius, final double pi)
    radius = range_1
    return radius * radius * pi
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    but it doesn't work

    "private static double area (int radius, final double pi)"
    final double pi? as the method parameter? ROFLHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
    That made my day.
    As for your question, make range_1 a global variable, in other words, declare it outside your main method
    Something like
    public class gary{
    int range_1;
    public static void main (String afgfg[]){
    range_1=//something;
    private static double area (int radius)
    radius = range_1
    return radius * radius * 3.14

  • Access to class variables

    Hi everybody
    I wrote a class with following constructor method :
        public Calculator(int pathCode, int year) throws InstantiationException, IllegalAccessException,
                                   ClassNotFoundException,
                                                                 SQLException, Throwable {
            trans.connect();
            double[][] rep= Report (pathCode,year);
            trans.disconnect();
    "how can i use from "rep" variable in my jsp page??

    In this example rep is a method variable, not a class variable. So you cannot access it outside the constructor. Make it a class variable and generate an accessor method for it.

  • Trying to pass and object variable to a method

    I have yet another question. I'm trying to display my output in succession using a next button. The button works and I get what I want using test results, however what I really want to do is pass it a variable instead of using a set number.
    I want to be able to pass the object variables myProduct, myOfficeSupplies, and maxNumber to method actionPerformed so they can be in-turn passed to the displayResults method which is called in the actionPerformed method. Since there is no direct call to actionPerformed because it is called within one of the built in methods, I can't tell it to receive and pass those variables. Is there a way to do it without having to pass them through the built-in methods?

  • Using HttpServletRequest object to share variables between static methods.

    Does anyone know of the overhead/performance implications of using the HttpServletRequest object to share variables between a static method and the calling code?
    First, let me explain why I am doing it.
    I have some pagination code that I would like to share across multiple servlets. So I pulled the pagination code out, and created a static method that these servlets could all use for their pagination.
    public class Pagination {
         public static void setPagination (HttpServletRequest request, Config conf, int totalRows) {
              int page = 0;
              if (request.getParameter("page") != null) {
                   page = new Integer(request.getParameter("page")).intValue();
              int articlesPerPage = conf.getArticlesPerPage();
              int pageBoundary = conf.getPageBoundary();
                int numOfPages = totalRows / articlesPerPage;
                // Checks if the page variable is empty (not set)
                if (page == 0 || (page > numOfPages && (totalRows % articlesPerPage) == 0 && page < numOfPages + 1)) {
                 page = 1;  // If it is empty, we're on page 1
              // Ex: (2 * 25) - 25 = 25 <- data starts at 25
             int startRow = page * articlesPerPage - (articlesPerPage);
             int endRow = startRow + (articlesPerPage);
             // Set array of page numbers.
             int minDisplayPage = page - pageBoundary;
             if (minDisplayPage < 1) {
                  minDisplayPage = 1;
             int maxDisplayPage = page + pageBoundary;
             if (maxDisplayPage > numOfPages) {
                  maxDisplayPage = numOfPages;
             int arraySize = (maxDisplayPage - minDisplayPage) + 1;
             // Check if there is a remainder page (partially filled page).
             if ((totalRows % articlesPerPage) != 0) arraySize++;
             // Set array to correct size.
             int[] pages = new int[arraySize];
             // Fill the array.
             for (int i = 1; i <= pages.length; i++) {
                  pages[i - 1] = i;
             // Set pageNext and pagePrev variables.
             if (page != 1) {
                  int pagePrev = page - 1;
                  request.setAttribute("pagePrev", pagePrev);
             if ((totalRows - (articlesPerPage * page)) > 0) {
                 int pageNext = page + 1;
                 request.setAttribute("pageNext", pageNext);
             // These will be used by calling code for SQL query.
             request.setAttribute("startRow", startRow);
             request.setAttribute("endRow", endRow);
             // These will be used in JSP page.
             request.setAttribute("totalRows", totalRows);
             request.setAttribute("numOfPages", numOfPages);
             request.setAttribute("page", page);
             request.setAttribute("pages", pages);
    }I need two parameters from this method (startrow and endrow) so I can perform my SQL queries. Since this is a multithreaded app, I do not want to use class variables that I will later retrieve through methods.
    So my solution was to just set the two parameters in the request and grab them later with the calling code like this:
    // Set pagination
    Pagination.setPagination(request, conf, tl.getTotalRows());
    // Grab variables set into request by static method
    int startRow = new Integer(request.getAttribute("startRow").toString());
    int endRow = new Integer(request.getAttribute("endRow").toString());
    // Use startRow and endRow for SQL query below...Does anyone see any problem with this from a resource/performance standpoint? Any idea on what the overhead is in using the HttpServletRequest object like this to pass variables around?
    Thanks for any thoughts.

    You could either
    - create instance vars in both controllers and set them accordingly to point to the same object (from the App Delegate) OR
    - create an instance variable on the App Delegate and access it from within the view controllers
    Hope this helps!

  • Reading a variable from one method to another method

    I am pretty new to Java and object code, so please understand if you think I should know the answer to this.
    I wish to pass a variable from one method to another within one servet. I have a doPost method:
    public void doPost(HttpServletRequest request, HttpServletResponse response) throws ServletException, IOException {
              HttpSession session = request.getSession();
             String userID = (String)session.getAttribute("userID");
             String title = request.getParameter("title");
            PrintWriter out = response.getWriter();
            out.println("userID is ..."+userID);
    } and wish to pass the variable userID to:
      public static void writeToDB(String title) {
             try{
                  String connectionURL = "jdbc:mysql://localhost/cms_college";
                  Connection connection=null;
                 Class.forName("com.mysql.jdbc.Driver");
                 connection = DriverManager.getConnection(connectionURL, "root", "");
                 Statement st = connection.createStatement();
                   st.executeUpdate ("INSERT INTO cmsarticles (title, userID) VALUES('"+title+"','"+userID+"')");
             catch(Exception e){
                   System.out.println("Exception is ;"+e);
        }because, at the moment the userID cannot be resolved in the writeToDB method. Thanking you in anticipation.

    Thanks for responding.
    If I replace
    public static void writeToDB(String title)with
    public static void writeToDB(String title, String userID)It throws up an error in the following method
    public void processFileItem(FileItem item) {
              // Can access all sorts of useful info. using FileItem methods
              if (item.isFormField()) {
                   //Map<String, String> formParameters = new LinkedHashMap<String, String>();
                   //String filename = item.getFieldName();
                   //String title = item.getString();
                   //System.out.println("received filename is ... " + filename );
                   //formParameters.put(title, filename);
                   } else {
                      // Is an uploaded file, so get name & store on local filesystem
                      String uploadedFileName = new File(item.getName()).getName();
                      File savedFile = new File("c:/uploads/"+uploadedFileName);
                      long sizeInBytes = item.getSize();
                      System.out.println("uploadedFileName is " + uploadedFileName);
                      String title = uploadedFileName;
                      System.out.println("size in bytes is " + sizeInBytes);
                      writeToDB(title);
                      try {
                        item.write(savedFile);// write uploaded file to local storage
                      } catch (Exception e) {
                        // Problem while writing the file to local storage
              }      saying there are not enough arguments in writeToDB(title);
    and if I put in an extra argumenet writeToDB(title,String userID);
    again it does not recognise userID

  • Force Derived Class to Implement Static Method C#

    So the situation is like, I have few classes, all of which have a standard CRUD methods but static. I want to create a base class which will be inherited so that it can force to implement this CRUD methods. But the problem is, the CRUD methods are static. So
    I'm unable to create virtual methods with static (for obvious reasons). Is there anyway I can implement this without compromising on static.
    Also, the signature of these CRUD methods are similar.
    E.g. ClassA will have CRUD methods with these type of Signatures
    public static List<ClassA> Get()
    public static ClassA Get(int ID)
    public static bool Insert(ClassA objA)
    public static bool Update(int ID)
    public static bool Delete(int ID)
    ClassB will have CRUD signatures like
    public static List<ClassB> Get()
    public static ClassB Get(int ID)
    public static bool Insert(ClassB objB)
    public static bool Update(int ID)
    public static bool Delete(int ID)
    So I want to create a base class with exact similar signature, so that inherited derived methods will implement their own version.
    For E.g. BaseClass will have CRUD methods like
    public virtual static List<BaseClass> Get()
    public virtual static BaseClassGet(int ID)
    public virtual static bool Insert(BaseClass objBase)
    public virtual static bool Update(int ID)
    public virtual static bool Delete(int ID)
    But the problem is I can't use virtual and static due to it's ovbious logic which will fail and have no meaning.
    So is there any way out?
    Also, I have few common variables (constants) which I want to declare in that base class so that I don't need to declare them on each derived class. That's why i can't go with interface also.
    Anything that can be done with Abstract class?

    Hi,
    With static methods, this is absolutely useless.
    Instead, you could use the "Singleton" pattern which restrict a class to have only one instance at a time.
    To implement a class which has the singleton pattern principle, you make a sealed class with a private constructor, and the main instance which is to be accessed is a readonly static member.
    For example :
    sealed class Singleton
    //Some methods
    void Method1() { }
    int Method2() { return 5; }
    //The private constructor
    private Singleton() { }
    //And, most importantly, the only instance to be accessed
    private static readonly _instance = new Singleton();
    //The corresponding property for public access
    public static Instance { get { return _instance; } }
    And then you can access it this way :
    Singleton.Instance.Method1();
    Now, to have a "mold" for this, you could make an interface with the methods you want, and then implement it in a singleton class :
    interface ICRUD<BaseClass>
    List<BaseClass> GetList();
    BaseClass Get(int ID);
    bool Insert(BaseClass objB);
    bool Update(int ID);
    bool Delete(int ID);
    And then an example of singleton class :
    sealed class CRUDClassA : ICRUD<ClassA>
    public List<ClassA> GetList()
    //Make your own impl.
    throw new NotImplementedException();
    public ClassA Get(int ID)
    //Make your own impl.
    throw new NotImplementedException();
    public bool Insert(ClassA objA)
    //Make your own impl.
    throw new NotImplementedException();
    public bool Update(int ID)
    //Make your own impl.
    throw new NotImplementedException();
    public bool Delete(int ID)
    //Make your own impl.
    throw new NotImplementedException();
    private CRUDClassA() { }
    private static readonly _instance = new CRUDClassA();
    public static Instance { get { return _instance; } }
    That should solve your problem, I think...

  • Global variable in BADI methods..

    Hi,
         How can i declare a global variable in BADI  method ,for example " Count type I".Can any one let me know ...
    Regards,
    Veera

    Hi,
    BADI is a just an interface definition that needs to be implemented by the customer. The final implementation of a BADI is always found in a class.
    You can define the variable as attribute and static if you want it to be accessed by all objects.
    I hope this answers your question
